Installation and operation of accessories not
approved by BMW, such as alarms, radios,
amplifiers, radar detectors, wheels, suspension
components, brake dust shields, telephones,
including operation of any mobile phone from
within the vehicle without using an externally
mounted antenna, or transceiver equipment, for
instance, CBs, walkie-talkies, ham radio or sim-
ilar accessories, may ca use extensive damage
to the vehicle, compromise its safety, interfere
with the vehicle's electrical system or affect the
validity of the BMW Limi ted Warranty. See your
BMW center for additional information. <
Maintenance, replacement, or repair of
the emission control devices and sys-
tems may be performed by any automotive
repair establishment or individual using any
certified automotive part. <
California Proposition 65 warning
California law requires us to issue the following

Engine exhaust and a wide variety of
automobile components and parts,
including components foun d in the interior fur-
nishings in a vehicle, contain or emit chemicals
known to the State of California to cause cancer
and birth defects and reproductive harm. In
addition, certain fluids contained in vehicles and
certain products of component wear contain or
emit chemicals known to the State of California
to cause cancer and birth defects or other
reproductive harm.
Battery posts, terminal s and related accesso-
ries contain lead and lead compounds. Wash
your hands after handling.
Used engine oil contains chemicals that have
caused cancer in labora tory animals. Always
protect your skin by washing thoroughly with
soap and water. <

designed to meet the particular operating con-
ditions and registration requirements in your
country and continental region in order to
deliver the full driving pl easure while the vehicle
is operated under those conditions. If you wish
to operate your vehicle in another country or
region, you may be requir ed to adapt your vehi-
cle to meet different prevailing operating condi-
tions and registration re quirements. You should
also be aware of any a pplicable warranty limita-
tions or exclusions for such country or region. In
such case, please contact Customer Relations
for further information.

Windshield washer nozzles
Both windshield washer nozzles are automati-
cally heated with the engine running or the
ignition switched on.
Washer fluid
Washer fluid antifreeze is flammable.
Therefore, keep it away from ignition
sources and only store it in the closed original
container that is kept out of reach of children;
otherwise, there is a risk of personal injury.
Comply with the instructions on the
container. <
United States: the washer fluid mixture ratio is
regulated by the U.S. EPA and many individual
states; do not exceed the allowable washer fluid
dilution ratio limits that apply. Follow the usage
instructions on the washer fluid container. Use
BMW's Windshield Washer Concentrate or the
equivalent.
Washer fluid filler neck
Only add washer fluid after allowing the
engine to cool and close the cover com-
pletely in order to prevent the washer fluid from
contacting hot engine parts. Otherwise, fluid
spills or leaks constitute a fire hazard and a risk
to personal safety. <
All washer nozzles are supplied with washer
fluid by the same reservoir.
The recommended minimu m filling quantity is
0.2 US gal/1 liter. Fill with a mixture of window cleaner concen-
trate, tap water and, if required, with a washer
antifreeze, according to
manufacturer's recom-
mendations.
Do not fill with undiluted window cleaner
concentrate or with pure water since these can
result in damage to the wiper system.
Do not mix window cleaner concentrates from
different manufacturers since this may clog the
washer nozzles.
Cruise control
The concept
Cruise control is availa ble for use at speeds of
approx. 20 mph or 30 km/h. The car then stores
and maintains the speed that you specify using
the lever on the steering column. In order to
maintain the specified speed, the system
brakes the vehicle when the engine braking
effect is insufficient on downhill gradients.
Do not use cruise control when driving at
constant speed is prevented by adverse
conditions, e.g. winding roads, dense traffic or
poor road conditions due to, e.g., snow, rain, ice
or loose surfaces. Otherwise, you could lose
control of the vehicle and cause an accident as a
result.<
Manual transmission
You can shift gears while cruise control is
activated. The system is deactivated when you
drive at very low engine speeds for an extended
period.

Maintenance
Vehicle equipment
In this chapter, all pr oduction, country, and
optional equipment that is offered in the model
range is described. For this reason, descrip-
tions will be given of some equipment that may
not be available in a vehi cle, for example due to
the special options or national-market version
selected. This also app lies to safety related
functions and systems.
BMW Maintenance System
The BMW Maintenance System advises you of
necessary maintenance measures and helps
you maintain the traffic and operating safety of
the vehicle.
Condition Based Service CBS
Sensors and special al gorithms take the
different driving conditions of your BMW into
account. Condition Based Service uses this to
determine the current and future service
requirements. By letting you define a service
and maintenance regimen that reflects your
own individual requirem ents, the system builds
the basis for trouble-free driving.
On the Control Display, you can have the
remaining times or distances for selected main-
tenance tasks and any legally prescribed dates
displayed, refer to page 88: >

Service data in the remote control
Your vehicle continuously stores service-
requirement information in the remote control
while you are driving. Your dealership Service
Advisor can read out this data from the remote
control unit, and propose an optimized mainte-
nance approach. Whenever you take your car in
for servicing you should therefore give your
dealership Service Advisor the remote control
unit that you last used.
Make sure that the date is always set
correctly, refer to page 92; otherwise, the
effectiveness of Condit ion Based Service CBS
is not assured. <
