symptom no longer exists, test is complete. Go to step 6).
2) If PCM has not been replaced, and TEST VER-2A (DIESEL) is\
being performed after a DTC test, inspect vehicle to ensure all engine
components are connected. Reassemble and reconnect components as
necessary. Using scan tool, erase DTCs, reset all memory values and go
to step 4).
3) If PCM has not been replaced, and TEST VER-2A (DIESEL) is\
being performed after an A/C relay control circuit DTC test, ensure
A/C is on and go to next step.
4) Road test vehicle for at least 5 minutes. Road test
vehicle at a speed of at least 40 MPH at some point during road test.
Stop vehicle. Turn engine off for at least 10 seconds. Start engine
and continue road test. Ensure transmission shifts through all gears.
After road test, turn engine off and go to next step.
5) Using scan tool, read DTCs. If any DTC returns, perform
appropriate test(s). If no DTCs return, test is complete. Go to next
step.
6) Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, erase
DTCs. Turn ignition off. Disconnect scan tool. Test is complete.
TEST VER-5A (EXCEPT DIESEL)
NOTE: If Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is replaced, correct
vehicle mileage and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) must
be programmed into PCM to prevent Diagnostic Trouble Codes
(DTCs) from being set in Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) modul\
e
and Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) module. To program
PCM and clear DTCs from ABS and SRS modules, proceed to
appropriate procedure listed below. On models equipped with a
Smart Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM), if replacing Powertrain
Control Module (PCM), secret key data must also be updated to\
enable engine starting. To update secret key data, proceed to
appropriate procedure listed below.
Procedure For Programming PCM & Clearing DTCs From ABS & SRS
Modules
Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Using scan
tool, enter correct VIN and mileage into PCM. Using scan tool
manufacturer's instructions, clear DTCs from ABS and SRS modules. Go
to step 1)).
Procedure For Updating Secret Key Data
Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Go to ENGINE
and then MISC menus on scan tool. Place SKIM in SECURED ACCESS MODE by
using appropriate Personal Identification Number (PIN) for this
vehicle. PIN may be obtained from owner, vehicle's invoice, or from
manufacturer. Select UPDATE THE SECRET KEY DATA. Data will be
transferred from Smart Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) to PCM. Go to
step 1)).
1) Inspect vehicle to ensure all engine components are
connected. Reassemble and reconnect components as necessary. If any
DTCs have not been diagnosed, return to appropriate test(s). If all
DTCs have been diagnosed and repaired, go to next step.
2) Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) if not
previously done. Ensure fuel tank is at least 1/4 full. Ensure A/C is
off. Go to next step.
3) Proper way to ensure DTC is repaired is to allow
Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to run monitor. Monitor operation may
be observed on scan tool. All specified enabling conditions for
specified DTC must be met before PCM will operate monitor. Go to next
step.

4) Using scan tool, monitor pretest enabling conditions until
all conditions have been met. Once all enabling conditions are met,
observe appropriate monitor for DTC on scan tool. If repaired DTC has
reset or is seen on monitor while on road test, repair is not
complete. Check for related Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) and
return to appropriate test. If no DTCs return, test is complete. Go to
step 6).
5) If another DTC exists, return to appropriate test(s). If
no DTCs return, test is complete. Go to next step.
6) Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, erase
DTCs. Turn ignition off. Disconnect scan tool. Test is complete.
TEST VER-5A (DIESEL)
NOTE: If Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (APPS), battery, Engine
Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has\
been disconnected or replaced, APPS must be reprogrammed and
correct vehicle mileage and Vehicle Identification Number
(VIN) must be programmed into PCM to prevent Diagnostic
Trouble Codes (DTCs) from being set in Anti-Lock Brake System\
(ABS) module and Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) module\
.
To program PCM and clear DTCs from ABS and SRS modules,
proceed to appropriate procedure listed below. On models
equipped with a Smart Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM), if
replacing Powertrain Control Module (PCM), secret key data
must also be updated to enable engine starting. To update
secret key data, proceed to appropriate procedure listed
below.
CAUTION: DO NOT attempt to adjust screws or disassemble APPS. Settings
are preset at factory and are not intended to by changed.
Procedure For Programming APPS
Reassemble all components. Turn ignition switch to ON or RUN
position without starting engine. Slowly press accelerator pedal to
floor once and slowly release. This procedure programs APPS
calibration in ECM. Go to step 1)).
Procedure For Programming PCM & Clearing DTCs From ABS & SRS
Modules
Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Using scan
tool, enter correct VIN and mileage into PCM. Using scan tool
manufacturer's instructions, clear DTCs from ABS and SRS modules. Go
to step 1)).
Procedure For Updating Secret Key Data
Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Go to ENGINE

1) If PCM has not been replaced, inspect vehicle to ensure
all engine components are connected. Reassemble and reconnect
components as necessary. If any DTCs have not been diagnosed, return
to appropriate test(s). If all DTCs have been diagnosed and repaired,
go to next step.
2) Ensure fuel tank is at least 1/4 full. Ensure A/C is off.
Proper way to ensure DTC is repaired is to connect scan tool to Data
Link Connector (DLC) and allow Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to ru\
n
a DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP COUNTER for 2 minutes. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD

outlet port. See Fig. 7. Start engine. Outlet pressure should not be
more 5 psi (0.4 kg/cm) less than inlet pressure. If pressure drop is
more than 5 psi (0.4 kg/cm), replace fuel filter and retest pressure.
If pressure drop is less than 5 psi (0.4 kg/cm), check for fuel
supply restriction.
NOTE: Due to very small vacuum specifications, use a scan tool and
Periphal Expansion Port (PEP) module with 0-15 psi transducer\
to perform following test.
Fuel Supply Restriction Test
Ensure transfer pump pressure is okay. Disconnect fuel supply
line at fuel transfer pump inlet. Remove plastic clip from pump inlet
and install in end of fuel supply line. Install 3/8" Adapter Hose
(6631) between fuel supply line and pump inlet. Install transducer
from PEP module to "T" fitting on adapter. Connect scan tool to
module. Start engine. Check vacuum reading with engine at full
throttle with no load. If vacuum reading is less than 6 in. Hg, check
for fuel supply air leaks. If vacuum reading is 6 in. Hg or more,
check fuel line for damage, dents and kinks. Repair as necessary. If
no problem is found, remove fuel module from fuel tank and check for
obstructions. Repair as necessary.
NOTE: A 3' section of 1/4" I.D. clear tubing and a 1/8" NPT fitting
are required for the following test.
Fuel Supply Air Leak Test
Clean area around filter inlet fitting plug, then remove
plug. See Fig. 7. Install 1/8" NPT fitting with 1/4" nipple fitting in
test port. Attach clear hose with a clamp to fitting. Place other end
of hose in a fuel container. Turn ignition switch to START position,
then release to RUN position without starting engine. Fuel transfer
pump should run for 25 seconds. After hose has been purged, watch for
any air bubbles in hose. If no bubbles exist, system is okay. If
bubbles exist, check fuel line, fittings and fuel module in tank.
Repair as necessary.
OVERFLOW VALVE
1) Fuel transfer pump delivers more fuel to fuel injection
pump than needed. Surplus fuel is routed back to fuel tank by overflow
valve. Overflow valve is used to secure fuel return line to side of
fuel injection pump. See Fig. 1. A sticking check valve in the
overflow valve may result in low power. Pressure release is set at 14
psi. (1.0 kg/cm
). If outlet valve is stuck closed, a FTC may set.
2) Clean area around outlet valve and fuel return line.
Remove valve from pump and fitting. Using regulated air pressure, test
valve by blowing into valve inlet. Valve should open at 14-16 psi. (1.
0-1.1 kg/cm
). If valve does not open, replace valve. Reduce air
pressure to 10 psi. (0.7 kg/cm). Valve should close. If valve does
not close, replace valve. Using NEW gaskets, install valve through
banjo fitting into fuel injection pump. Tighten valve to 24 ft. lbs.
(30 N.m).
FUEL INJECTOR & HIGH-PRESSURE FUEL LINES
WARNING: DO NOT allow diesel fuel to contact hot engine when checking
fuel injector, as high exhaust temperatures could cause fire.
Use care when working around high-pressure fuel lines, as
fuel is under extreme pressure and could penetrate skin,
causing personal injury. Wear safety goggles and protective
clothing when checking fuel injectors.

CAUTION: Always turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to
disconnecting any module connector.
1) Using scan tool, actuate chime. If chime sounds, go to
next step. If chime does not sound, replace Central Timer Module
(CTM). CTM is located under left side of instrument panel.
2) Using scan tool, read Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
DTCs. If no engine coolant temperature related codes exist, go to next
step. If engine coolant temperature related codes exist, see
appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE section.
3) Due to difficult access of coolant temperature sensor, Oil
Pressure Switch (OPS) will be used to verify CCD bus message from PCM.\
Disconnect OPS connector. OPS is located near bottom of distributor.

VEHICLE THEFT/SECURITY SYSTEM
DOOR DISARM SWITCH FAILURE
NOTE: For connector terminal identification and wiring diagrams,
see BODY CONTROL COMPUTER - INTRODUCTION article. Perform
VERIFICATION TEST VER-1A after each repair.
CAUTION: Always turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to
disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
1) Using scan tool, read VTSS inputs/outputs information. If
scan tool displays door disarm switch state OPEN, system is currently
functioning properly. If scan tool does not display door disarm switch
state OPEN, go to next step.
2) Disconnect left door disarm switch. If scan tool displays
door disarm switch state OPEN, replace left door disarm switch. If
scan tool does not display door disarm switch state OPEN, go to next
step.
3) Disconnect right door disarm switch. If scan tool displays
door disarm switch state OPEN, replace left door disarm switch. If
scan tool does not display door disarm switch state OPEN, go to next
step.
4) Access Central Timer Module (CTM). CTM is located under
left side of instrument panel. Disconnect CTM 18-pin connector C2.
Using an external ohmmeter, measure resistance between ground and CTM
18-pin connector C2 terminal No. 10 (Light Green/Orange wire). If
resistance is less than 1000 ohms, repair short to ground in Light
Green/Orange wire. If resistance is 1000 ohms or more, replace CTM.
DOOR LOCK SWITCH FAILURE
NOTE: For connector terminal identification and wiring diagrams,
see BODY CONTROL COMPUTER - INTRODUCTION article. Perform
VERIFICATION TEST VER-1A after each repair.
CAUTION: Always turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to
disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
1) Clear trouble codes as needed. See BODY CONTROL COMPUTER -
INTRODUCTION article. Using scan tool, read I/O's door lock switch
status. If scan tool displays RELEASED, system is currently
functioning properly. If scan tool does not display RELEASED, go to
next step.
2) Disconnect left door lock switch connector. If scan tool
displays RELEASED, replace left door lock switch. If scan tool does
not display RELEASED, go to next step.
3) Disconnect right door lock switch connector. If scan tool
displays RELEASED, replace right door lock switch. If scan tool does
not display RELEASED, go to next step.
4) Locate Central Timer Module (CTM). CTM is located under
left side of instrument panel. Disconnect CTM 18-pin connector C2.
Using an external voltmeter, measure voltage between ground and CTM
18-pin connector C2 terminal No. 13 (Pink/Dark Green wire). If voltage\
is more than 1.5 volts, repair short to voltage in Pink/Dark Green
wire between CTM and door lock switch. If voltage is 1.5 volts or
less, replace CTM.
DOOR UNLOCK SWITCH FAILURE
NOTE: For connector terminal identification and wiring diagrams,
see BODY CONTROL COMPUTER - INTRODUCTION article. Perform

right kick panel. Disconnect CTM 18-pin connector C2. Turn ignition
on. Using an external voltmeter, measure voltage between ground and
CTM 18-pin connector C2 terminal No. 18 (Black/Red wire). If voltage
is more than 9.5 volts, replace CTM. If voltage is 9.5 volts or less,
repair open in Black/Red wire between CTM and horn relay.
6) Remove security relay from Power Distribution Center
(PDC). Turn ignition on. Connect a test light between battery source
and headlight relay connector terminal No. 85 (Red/Dark Blue wire).
Using scan tool, actuate relay. If test light illuminates, replace
security relay. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
7) Using an external voltmeter, measure voltage between
battery voltage and security relay connector terminal No. 86
(Red/Orange wire). If voltage is more than 9.5 volts, go to next step.\
If voltage is 9.5 volts or less, repair open in Red/Orange wire
between battery source and security relay.
8) Reinstall security relay. Locate Central Timer Module
(CTM). CTM is located behind right kick panel. Disconnect CTM 18-pin
connector C2. Using an external voltmeter, measure voltage between
ground and CTM 18-pin connector C2 terminal No. 6 (Red/Dark Blue
wire). If voltage is more than 9.5 volts, replace CTM. If voltage is
9.5 volts or less, repair open in Red/Dark Blue wire between CTM and
security relay.
9) Disconnect overhead console 12-pin connector. Using an
external voltmeter, measure voltage between battery and overhead
console 12-pin connector terminal No. 11 (Black wire). Using scan
tool, actuate VTSS indicator light. If voltage is about 10 volts,
replace overhead console. If voltage is not about 10 volts, go to next
step.
10) Measure voltage between ground and overhead console 12-
pin connector terminal No. 5 (Pink wire). Turn ignition on. If voltage\
is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or
less, repair open Pink wire.
11) Locate Central Timer Module (CTM). CTM is located behind\
right kick panel. Disconnect CTM 18-pin connector C2. Turn ignition
on. Using an external ohmmeter, measure resistance between ground and
CTM 18-pin connector C2 terminal No. 8 (Black wire). If resistance is
5 ohms or more, replace CTM. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair
open Black wire between CTM and VTSS indicator light.
12) Using scan tool, place VTSS in diagnostic mode and follow
directions on screen. If TURN KEY TO ACC POSITION is not displayed, go
to step 24). If NO RESPONSE after turning key to accessory position or
TURN KEY TO ACC POSITION is displayed longer than 15 seconds, go to
next step. If neither response is received, go to step 14).
13) Locate Central Timer Module (CTM). CTM is located behind\
right kick panel. Gain access to CTM 18-pin connector C2. Ensure key
is in accessory position. Using an external voltmeter, measure voltage
between ground and backprobe of CTM 18-pin connector C2 terminal No. 5
(Dark Blue/White wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace CTM.\
If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open Dark Blue/White wire
between CTM and junction block.
14) Remove key from ignition. Wait 2 seconds after performing
each of the following actions. Open, then close both door. Operate
power door lock switch to lock, then unlock position. Rotate key both
directions in both doors. Ensure each operation is successful. If any
operation is unsuccessful, see VTSS SYMPTOM DIRECTORY table for repair
of failed operation. If all operations are successful, go to step 22).

ROTOR
CAUTION: DO NOT allow caliper to hang by brake hose.
Inspection
1) Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheels. On Dakota 4WD,
reinstall and tighten lug nuts to secure rotor. On Dakota 2WD, Ram
Pickup and Ram Van, remove dust cap, and temporarily adjust wheel
bearings to zero end play.
2) On all models, mount dial indicator on steering arm, with
plunger contacting rotor about 1" (25 mm) from edge of rotor. Slowly
rotate rotor, and note lateral runout. Lateral runout on either side
of rotor should not exceed specification. See DISC BRAKE
SPECIFICATIONS.
3) On Dakota, check runout of hub face if runout exceeds
specification. Before removing rotor, make a chalk mark across rotor
and one wheel stud. Make mark on high side of runout.
4) Remove rotor from hub. Install dial indicator on steering
arm, with stem contacting hub face near outer diameter. Place dial
indicator stem outside stud circle but inside chamfer on hub rim. If
runout exceeds specification See DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS. Hub must
be replaced.
5) If hub runout is within specification, install rotor on
hub with chalk marks 180 degrees apart. Install wheel lug nuts, and
recheck rotor runout. If runout is not within specification, resurface
or replace rotor.
6) On all models, measure rotor parallelism. To measure
parallelism, measure rotor thickness with micrometer at 12 equal
points around rotor radius approximately 1" (25 mm) from edge of
rotor. If thickness varies more than parallelism specification,
resurface or replace rotor. See DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS.
Removal (Dakota 2WD, Ram Pickup 2WD (5 Studs), & Ram Van)
Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheels. Remove brake
caliper from adapter. Support caliper aside. Remove grease cap, cotter
pin, nut lock, nut, thrust washer and outer wheel bearing. Pull rotor
assembly off spindle.
Installation
1) Slide rotor assembly into position on spindle. Pack and
install outer wheel bearing, thrust washer and nut. While rotating
rotor and hub assembly, tighten wheel bearing nut to specification.
See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
2) Back off nut to release preload. Retighten nut finger
tight. Install nut lock and cotter pin. Coat inside of cap with
grease, and install cap. To complete installation, reverse removal
procedure.
Removal (Ram Pickup With Tapered Bearings)
1) Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel. Remove brake
caliper and adapter. Support caliper aside. Remove grease cap and
driving hub snap ring. Remove drive hub and spacer.
2) On models with removable adapter hub, remove hub from
rotor. On models with one-piece hub and rotor assembly, remove grease
cap, cotter pin and bearing adjuster nut. Remove thrust washer and
outer wheel bearing. Remove rotor and hub assembly from spindle.
Installation
1) Apply liberal coat of wheel bearing grease to spindle.
Install hub and rotor on spindle. Pack and install outer bearing.
Install thrust washer and bearing adjuster nut. Tighten nut only
enough to remove end play at his time.
2) Install caliper. DO NOT seat caliper pistons and brake

pads at this time. On models with removable hub, install hub on rotor.
Install wheel and tire assembly. Tighten lug nuts so they are snug,
but DO NOT tighten to final torque specifications.
3) While rotating wheel, tighten adjuster nut sufficiently to
seat bearing. Loosen nut and retighten while still rotating wheel.
Back off adjuster nut to completely release bearing preload torque.
Ensure endplay of .001-.003" (.025-.076 mm). Install lock nut and NEW
cotter pin. If necessary, tighten lock nut slightly to align cotter
pin hole. Install grease cap. Tighten caliper bolts and lug nuts to
specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table. To complete
installation, reverse remove procedure.
Removal (Ram Pickup With 8 Studs)
1) Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel. Remove hub
extension, if equipped. Remove brake caliper. Support caliper aside.
2) On models with removable adapter hub, remove hub from
rotor. On models with one-piece hub and rotor assembly, remove cotter
pin from rotor hub nut. Remove nut. Disconnect ABS wheel speed sensor
wire (if equipped), and remove from frame and steering knuckle. Remove\
bolts securing hub to steering knuckle from inboard side of steering
knuckle. Remove rotor and hub assembly.
Installation
1) Apply anti-seize compound to drive shaft splines. Replace
grease seal in steering knuckle, if necessary. Insert 2 rearmost top
and bottom rotor hub bolts in steering knuckle so they extend through
back of knuckle. Install hub spacer, ensuring flat on space is
positioned to rear. Use chassis grease to hold spacer in position, if
necessary.
NOTE: If equipped with wheel speed sensor, brake shield must be
positioned on hub bearing, and sensor wire must be at top of
knuckle.
2) Align rotor hub with drive shaft and install hub assembly.
Align bolt holes in hub flange with bolts previously installed. Start
nuts on flange bolts sufficiently to hold assembly in place. Install
remaining bolts, and tighten all bolts to specification. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS table.
3) Install washer and hub nut. Tighten nut securely. Install
NEW cotter pin. Install grease cap. Install caliper. Tighten caliper
bolts and lug nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
To complete installation, reverse remove procedure.
REAR BRAKE SHOES
WARNING: Use water or brake cleaner to clean brake parts. DO NOT use
compressed air to remove dirt and dust.
Removal (Dakota & Ram Van)
1) Remove wheel and drum. Note how secondary spring overlaps
primary return spring. Using spring remover, remove brake shoe return
springs. Slide automatic adjuster cable off anchor. Disconnect cable
from adjusting lever.
2) Remove cable, cable guide and anchor plate. See Figs. 3,
4, and 5. Disconnect adjusting lever return spring from lever. Remove
lever and return spring from pivot pin. Remove shoe-to-shoe spring.
Spread shoes, and remove adjustment star wheel.
3) Remove shoe retainers, springs and pins. Remove parking
brake lever from secondary shoe. Remove shoes and parking brake strut
with spring.
