AUTOWIPERS
Note:Fully defrost the windshield before youswitch the windshield wipers on.
Note:Make sure you switch the windshieldwipers off before entering a car wash.
Note: If streaks or smears appear on thewindshield, clean the windshield and thewiper blades. If that does not resolve theissue, install new wiper blades.
Note:If you switch autolamps andautowipers on, the headlamps turn on whenthe windshield wipers continuously operate.
Wet or winter driving conditions with ice,snow or salty road mist can causeinconsistent and unexpected wiping orsmearing.
Use the rotary control to adjust the sensitivityof the autowipers. When you select lowsensitivity, the wipers operate when thesensor detects a large amount of water onthe windshield. When you select highsensitivity, the wipers operate when thesensor detects a small amount of water onthe windshield.
Keep the outside of the windshield clean. The rain sensor is very sensitive and thewipers may operate if dirt, mist or insects hitthe windshield.
In these conditions, you can do the following:
•Lower the sensitivity of the autowipersto reduce the amount of smearing on thewindshield.
•Switch to normal or high-speed wipe.
•Switch autowipers off.
WINDSHIELD WASHERS
Note: Do not operate the wipers on a drywindshield. This may scratch the glass,damage the wiper blades or cause the wipermotor to burn out. Always use thewindshield washer before wiping a drywindshield.
Note: Do not operate the washers when thewasher reservoir is empty. This may causethe washer pump to overheat.
•A brief press causes a single wipewithout washer fluid.
•A brief press and hold causes the wipersto swipe three times with washer fluid.
•A long press and hold turns on the wipersand washer fluid for up to 10 seconds.

A wipe occurs a few seconds after washingto clear any remaining washer fluid. You canswitch this feature on or off in the informationdisplay.

Fasten Seatbelt Warning Lamp
It illuminates and a chime soundsuntil you fasten the seatbelts.
Front Fog Lamps
Lights when you switch the frontfog lamps on.
Head Up Display (If Equipped)
A red beam of lights will illuminateon the windshield in certaininstances when using adaptivecruise control and/or the collision warningsystem. It will also illuminate momentarilywhen you start your vehicle to make sure thedisplay works.
High Beam
It will illuminate when you switchthe high beam headlamps on. Itwill flash when you use theheadlamp flasher.
Liftgate Ajar
Illuminates when you do notcompletely close the liftgate.
Low Fuel Level
It will illuminate when the fuel levelis low or the fuel tank is nearlyempty. Refuel as soon as possible.
Low Tire Pressure Warning
It illuminates if the tire pressure inone or more tires is below thecorrect tire pressure.
It also illuminates momentarily when youswitch the ignition on to confirm the lamp isfunctional. If it does not illuminate when youswitch the ignition on, or begins to flash atany time, have the system checked by yourauthorized dealer.
Low Washer Fluid
It will illuminate when thewindshield washer fluid is low.
Parking Lamps
It will illuminate when you switchthe parking lamps on.
Powertrain Malfunction/ReducedPower
Illuminates when a powertrain oran AWD fault has been detected. Contact your authorized dealer assoon as possible.
Service Engine Soon
If it illuminates when the engine isrunning this indicates amalfunction. The On BoardDiagnostics system has detected amalfunction of the vehicle emission controlsystem.
If it flashes, engine misfire may be occurring. Increased exhaust gas temperatures coulddamage the catalytic converter or othervehicle components. Drive in a moderatefashion (avoid heavy acceleration anddeceleration) and have your vehicleimmediately serviced.

ENGINE OIL CHECK
To check the engine oil level consistentlyand accurately, do the following:
1.Make sure the parking brake is on. Makesure the transmission is in park (P) orneutral (N).
2. Run the engine until it reaches normaloperating temperature.
3. Make sure that your vehicle is on levelground.
4.Switch the engine off and wait 15 minutesfor the oil to drain into the oil pan. Checking the engine oil level too soonafter you switch the engine off may resultin an inaccurate reading.
5. Open the hood. See Opening andClosing the Hood (page 282).
6. Remove the dipstick and wipe it with aclean, lint-free cloth. See Under HoodOverview (page 284).
7.Replace the dipstick and remove it againto check the oil level. See Under HoodOverview (page 284).
8. Make sure that the oil level is betweenthe maximum and minimum marks. If theoil level is at the minimum mark, add oilimmediately. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 355).
9. If the oil level is correct, replace thedipstick and make sure it is fully seated.
Note:Do not remove the dipstick when theengine is running.
Note: If the oil level is between themaximum and minimum marks, the oil levelis acceptable. Do not add oil.
Note:The oil consumption of new enginesreaches its normal level after approximately3,000 mi (5,000 km).
Adding Engine Oil
WARNING: Do not remove the fillercap when the engine is running.
Do not use supplemental engine oil additivesbecause they are unnecessary and couldlead to engine damage that may not becovered by the vehicle Warranty.

WARNING: Do not put coolant in thewindshield washer reservoir. If sprayed onthe windshield, coolant could make itdifficult to see through the windshield.
Note: Do not use stop leak pellets, coolingsystem sealants, or non-specified additivesas they can cause damage to the enginecooling or heating systems. Resultingcomponent damage may not be covered bythe vehicle Warranty.
Note: Automotive fluids are notinterchangeable.
It is very important to use prediluted coolantapproved to the correct specification in orderto avoid plugging the small passageways inthe engine cooling system. See Capacitiesand Specifications (page 343). Do not mixdifferent colors or types of coolant in yourvehicle. Mixing of engine coolants or usingan incorrect coolant may harm the engine orcooling system components and may not becovered by the vehicle Warranty.
Note:If prediluted coolant is not available,use the approved concentrated coolantdiluting it to 50/50 with distilled water. SeeCapacities and Specifications (page 343).Using water that has not been deionisedmay contribute to deposit formation,corrosion and plugging of the small coolingsystem passageways.
Note: Coolants marketed for all makes andmodels may not be approved to ourspecifications and may cause damage tothe cooling system. Resulting componentdamage may not be covered by the vehicleWarranty.
If the coolant level is at or below theminimum mark, add prediluted coolantimmediately.
To top up the coolant level do the following:
1. Unscrew the cap slowly. Any pressureescapes as you unscrew the cap.
2. Add prediluted coolant approved to thecorrect specification. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 343).
3.Add enough prediluted coolant to reachthe correct level.
4. Replace the coolant reservoir cap, turnit clockwise until you feel a strongresistance.
5. Check the coolant level in the coolantreservoir the next few times you driveyour vehicle. If necessary, add enoughprediluted engine coolant to bring thecoolant level to the correct level.
If you have to add more than 1.1 qt (1 L) ofengine coolant per month, have your vehiclechecked as soon as possible. Operating anengine with a low level of coolant can resultin engine overheating and possible enginedamage.
Note:During normal vehicle operation, thecoolant may change color from orange topink or light red. As long as the coolant isclear and uncontaminated, this color changedoes not indicate the coolant has degradednor does it require the coolant to be drained,the system to be flushed, or the coolant tobe replaced.
In case of emergency, you can add a largeamount of water without engine coolant inorder to reach a vehicle service location. Inthis instance, qualified personnel:

To avoid fluid contamination, the reservoircap must remain in place and fully tight,unless you are adding fluid.
Only use fluid that meets Ford specifications.See Capacities and Specifications (page343).
POWER STEERING FLUID CHECK
Your vehicle is equipped with an electricpower steering (EPS) system. There is nofluid reservoir to check or fill.
WASHER FLUID CHECK
WARNING: If you operate yourvehicle in temperatures below 41.0°F (5°C),use washer fluid with antifreeze protection.Failure to use washer fluid with antifreezeprotection in cold weather could result inimpaired windshield vision and increasethe risk of injury or accident.
Note:The front and rear washer systemsare supplied from the same reservoir.
Add fluid to fill the reservoir if the level is low.Only use a washer fluid that meets ourspecifications. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 343).
State or local regulations on volatile organiccompounds may restrict the use of methanol,a common windshield washer antifreezeadditive. Washer fluids containingnon-methanol antifreeze agents should beused only if they provide cold weatherprotection without damaging the vehicle’spaint finish, wiper blades or washer system.
CHANGING THE 12V BATTERY
WARNING: Batteries normallyproduce explosive gases which can causepersonal injury. Therefore, do not allowflames, sparks or lighted substances tocome near the battery. When working nearthe battery, always shield your face andprotect your eyes. Always provide correctventilation.

Note:Until you switch the ignition to the onposition, you will receive a message in yourinformation display stating that your vehicleis not in park.
1. Apply the parking brake.
2. Shift into park (P) or neutral (N).
3. Switch off all accessories.
4. Press the brake pedal and start yourvehicle.
5. Run the engine until it reaches normaloperating temperature. While the engineis warming up, complete the following:Reset the clock. See Audio Unit (page366). Reset the power windowsbounce-back feature. See PowerWindows (page 94). Reset the radiostation presets. See Audio Unit (page366).
6. Allow the engine to idle for at least oneminute.
7.Drive the vehicle at least 10 mi (16 km) tocompletely relearn the idle trim and fueltrim strategy.
Note:If you do not allow the engine torelearn the idle and fuel trim strategy, theidle quality of your vehicle may be adverselyaffected until the engine computereventually relearns the idle trim and fuel trimstrategy.
Note:Certain features may not operate ifthe battery monitor system is not reset witha scan tool following a jump start or batteryreplacement. Normal electrical accessoryoperation should resume after your vehicleis left undisturbed for 8 hours.
Make sure that you dispose of old batteriesin an environmentally friendly way. Seekadvice from your local authority aboutrecycling old batteries.
If storing your vehicle for more than 30 dayswithout recharging the battery, werecommend that you disconnect the batterycables to maintain battery charge for quickstarting.
CHECKING THE WIPER BLADES
Run the tip of your fingers over the edge ofthe blade to check for roughness.
Clean the wiper blades with washer fluid orwater applied with a soft sponge or cloth.
CHANGING THE WIPER BLADES
You can improve poor wiper quality bycleaning the wiper blades and thewindshield.
Replace the wiper blades at least annuallyfor optimum performance.
