NANCEMOOPA- -
iiMaintenance and lubrication service recommenda-
tions have been compiled to provide maximum
protection for the vehicle owner’s investment
against all reasonable types of driving conditions.
Since these conditions vary with the individual
vehicle owner’s driving habits, the area in which the
vehicle is operated and the type of driving to which
the vehicle is subjected, it is necessary to prescribe
lubrication and maintenance service on a time
frequency as well as mileage interval basis.
Oils, lubricants and greases are classified and
graded according to standards recommended by the
Society of Automotive Engineers
(SAE), the Amer-
ican Petroleum Institute (API) and the National
Lubricating Grease Institute
(NLGI).MAINTENANCE SCHEDULES
Information for service maintenance is provided
under “SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE TABLE”.
Three schedules are provided; one for “Required
Maintenance”, one for “General Maintenance” and
one for “Severe Usage Service”.
Item numbers in the “SCHEDULED MAINTE-
NANCE TABLE” correspond to the item numbers in
the “MAINTENANCE SERVICE” section.
LSEVERE SERVICE
Vehicles operating under severe service conditions
will require more frequent service.
Component service information is included in
appropriate units for vehicles operating under one or
more of the following conditions:
1. Police, taxi, or commercial type operation
2. Operation of Vehicle
(1) Short-trip operation at freezing temperature
(engine not thoroughly warmed up)
(2) More than 50% operation in heavy city
traffic during hot weather above 32°C
(90°F)(3) Extensive idling
(4) Driving in sandy areas
(5) Driving in salty areas
(6) Driving in dusty conditions
ENGINE OIL
The SAE grade number indicates the viscosity of
engine oils, for example, SAE 30, which is a single
grade oil. Engine oils are also identified by a dual
number, for example, SAE 1 OW-30, which indicates
a multigrade oil.
The API classification system defines oil perform-
ance in terms of engine usage. Only engine oil
idesigned “For Service SG” or “For Service
SGXD”,when available, should be used. These oils contain
sufficient chemical additives to provide maximumengine protection. Both the SAE grade and the API
designation can be found on the container.
Caution
Test results submitted to EPA have shown thatlaboratory animals develop skin cancer after
prolonged contact with used engine oil. Accor-dingly, the potential exists for humans to de-
velop a number of skin disorders, including
cancer, from such exposure to used engine oil.
Care should be taken, therefore, when changing
engine oil, to minimize the amount and length ofexposure time to used engine oil on your skin.
Protective clothing and gloves, that cannot be
penetrated by oil, should be worn. The skin
should be thoroughly washed with soap and
water, or use waterless hand cleaner, to removeany used engine oil. Do not use gasoline,
thinners, or solvents.GEAR
LUEiRlCANTSThe SAE grade number also indicates the viscosity
of Multi-Purpose Gear Lubricants.
The API classification system defines gear lubri-
cants in terms of usage. Typically gear lubricants
conforming to API GL-4 or GL-5 with a viscosity of
SAE
75W-85W are recommended for manual trans-
axle.
LUBRICANTS
- GREASES
Semi-solid lubricants, bear the
NLGI designation and
are further classified as grades 0, 1, 2, 3 etc.
Whenever “Chassis Lubricant” is specified,
Multi-Purpose Grease,
NLGI grade 2, should be used.
FUEL USAGE STATEMENT
Use premium unleaded gasoline having a minimum
octane rating of 91,
(R + M)/2. However, it is also
possible to use unleaded gasoline with an octane
rating of at least 87.
Unleaded gasolines only must be used in vehicles
equipped with catalyst emission control systems.
All vehicles, so equipped, have labels located on the
instrument panel and on the back of fuel filler lid that
state, “UNLEADED GASOLINE ONLY”. These vehi-
cles also have fuel filler tubes especially designed to
accept the smaller diameter unleaded gasoline
dispensing nozzles only.
MATERIALS ADDED TO FUEL
Indiscriminate use of fuel system cleaning agents
should be avoided. Many of these materials in-
tended for gum and varnish removal may contain
highly active solvents or similar ingredients that can
be harmful to gasket and diaphragm materials used
in fuel system component parts.

OPERATION
lThe intake air volume during idling is controlled by opening ‘or closing the servo valve provided in the air
path that bypasses the throttle valve.’
lThe servo valve is opened or closed by operating the stepper motor in the speed control servo in normal or
reverse direction.
lThe battery power is supplied to the stepper motor through the control relay. As the engine control unit
turns on power transistors in the unit one after another, the stepper motor coil is energized and the motor
rotates in normal or reverse direction.
TROUBLESHOOTING HINTSHint 1:If the stepper motor step increases to 100 to 120 steps or decreases to 0 step, faulty stepper motor
or open circuit in the harness is suspected.
Hint 2: If the idle speed control servo harness and individual part checks have resulted normal but the
stepper motor steps are out of specification, the following faults are suspected.
(I) Poorly adjusted reference idle speed
(2) Deposit on the throttle valve
(3) Air leaking into the intake manifold through gasket gap
(4) Loose EGR valve seat
(5)Poor combustion in the cylinder (faulty ignition plug, ignition coil, injector, low compression
pressure, etc.)

Inspect for damage, cracking or deterioration. Replace if faulty.
Caution1. Operation of any type, including idling, should be
avoided if engine misfiring occurs. Under this conditionthe exhaust system will operate at abnormally high
temperature, which may cause damage to the catalystor underbody parts of the vehicle.
2.Alteration or deterioration of ignition or fuel system, or
any type of operating condition which results in enginemisfiring must be corrected to avoid overheating the
catalytic converters.
3.Proper maintenance and tune up according to manufac-turer’s specifications should be made to correct the

instructions.Driver’s air bag information
This vehicle
ha% an air bag which will supple-
ment the driver’s seatbelt in certain frontal
collisions. The air bag is not a substitute for the
driver’s seatbelt in any type of collision. The
driver, and all other occupants, should wear
seatbelts at all times.
WARNING!
If the “SRS” warning light does not come.on
for about 7 seconds when ignition key is turned
to “ON” or engine is started, or if it stays on
while driving, drive the vehicle to your nearest
authorized dealer right away. Also do so if
vehicle’s front end is damaged or if air bag has
deployed.
The air bag system must be inspected by an
authorized dealer ten years after vehicle manu-
facture date shown on certification label lo-
cated on left front door-latch post or door
frame.Read “SRS” section of your owner’s manual
before driving, for important information, about
Dperation, service and disposal of the air bag
svstem.
Do no drop: keep dry.
Failure to follow instructions could render air
bag inoperative and result in driver injury.

electrical test equipment or probes. Refer to
service manual for further instructions, and for
special handling, storage and disposal proce-

able. Contact with acid, water, or heavy metals
may produce harmful and irritating gases or
explosive compounds. Do not dismantle, in-

store at temperatures exceeding

vomiting. For eye contact flush eye with water
for 15 minutes. If gases from acid or water
contact are inhaled, seek fresh air. In every
case, get prompt medical attention.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONSR-12 refrigerant is a chlorofluoro-carbon
(CFC) that
can contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer in
the upper atmosphere.
Ozone filters out harmful radiation from the sun.
To assist in protecting the ozone layer, Mitsubishi
Motor Sales of America recommends that a R-12
refrigerant recycling device that meets SAE stan-
dard
J1991 be used.
Contact an automotive service equipment supplier
for refrigerant recycling equipment that is available
in your area.
The refrigerant used in all air conditioner is R-l 2. It is
transparent and colorless in both the liquid and
vapor state. Since it has a boiling point of
-29.8”C(-21.7”F), at atmospheric pressure, it will be a vapor
at all normal temperatures and pressures. The vapor
is heavier than air, non-flammable, and nonexplo-
sive. It is nonpoisonous except when it is in direct
contact with open flame. It is noncorrosive except
when combined with water. The following precau-
tions must be observed when handling R-12.
CautionWear safety goggles when servicing the refri-
geration system.R-12 evaporates so rapidly at normal atmospheric
pressures and temperatures that it tends to freeze
anything it contacts. For this reason, extreme care
must be taken to prevent any liquid refrigerant from
contacting the skin and especially the eyes. Always
wear safety goggles when servicing the refrigera-
tion part of the air conditioning system. Keep a
bottle of sterile mineral oil handy when working on
the refrigeration system. Should any liquid re-
frigerant get into the eyes, use a few drops of
mineral oil to wash them out. R-12 is rapidly
absorbed by the oil. Next splash the eyes with
plenty of cold water. Call your doctor immediately
even though irritation has ceased after treatment.
CautionDo not heat R-12 above 52°C
(125.6”F).
M55PAAFIn most instances, moderate heat is required to
bring the pressure of the refrigerant in its container
above the pressure of the system when charging or
adding refrigerant. A bucket or large pan of hot
water not over 52°C
(125.6”F) is all the heat required
for this purpose. Do not heat the refrigerant contain-
er with a blow torch or any other means that would
raise temperature and pressure above this tempera-
ture. Do not weld or steam clean on or near the
system components or refrigerant lines.
Caution
Keep R-12 containers upright when charging the
system.When metering R-12 into the refrigeration system,
keep the supply tank or cans in an upright position. If
the refrigerant container is on its side or upside
down, liquid refrigerant will enter the system and
damage the compressor.
CautionAlways work in a well-ventilated room.
Good ventilation is vital in the working area.
Although R-12 vapor is normally nonpoisonous,
contact with an open flame can cause the vapor to
become very poisonous. A poisonous gas is pro-
duced when using the flame-type leak detector.
Avoid inhaling the fumes from the leak detector.
CautionDo not allow liquid refrigerant to touch bright
metal.Refrigerant will tarnish bright metal and chrome
surfaces, and in combination with moisture can
severely corrode all metal surfaces.

/ Refrigerant charge1The refrigerant system must have been evacuated using the
previous procedure before charging.
Charge using only R-12 refrigerant. R-12 is available in bulk
tanks or small cans. Follow the safety precautions for handling
R-12 as listed in this group.
CHARGING THE REFRIGERANTCHARGING WITH SMALL CANS
Wh,en using disposable cans of this type, follow carefully the
can manufacturers instructions.
(1) Start up the vacuum pump.
Caution1. Do not use the compressor for evacuation.
2. Do not operate the compressor in the vacuum
condition; damage may occur.
(2) Evacuate to a vacuum reading of 100
kPa (89.5 psi) or
higher (approx. IO minutes).
(3) Turn back the high pressure side adaptor valve all the way
and close the service valve.
(4) Stop the vacuum pump and allow to stand for 5 minutes.
(5) Check for leaks. (Good if the vacuum is held.)
(6) Tighten the charge valve handle to puncture the service
can.(7) Open the charge valve to charge the system with re-
frigerant.
(8) When the refrigerant is no longer drawn in, turn back the
low pressure side adaptor valve handle all the way and
close the service valve.

Chack for gas leaks using a leak detector.

CautionUse engine oil for this test; stir it well while heating,
and do not heat more than necessary.
