AND ENGINE>
ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS
The engine control module monitors the input/out-
put signals (some signals at all times and the othe rs
under specified conditions) of the engine control
module.
Whenamalfunction has continued for a specified
time or longer since the irregular signal is initia lly
monitored, the engine control module judges that
a malfunction has occurred.
After the ECM first detects a malfunction, a diagno s-
tic trouble code is recorded when the engine is
restarted and the same malfunction is re-detected.
However, for items marked with a
a diagnostic
trouble code is recorded on the first detection of
the malfunction.
There are 45 diagnostic items, and the diagnostic results can be read out with a scan tool.
Moreover, since memorization of the diagnostic
trouble codes is backed up directly by the battery,
the diagnostic results are memorized even if the ignition key is turned off. The diagnostic trouble
codes will, however, be erased when the battery
terminal or the engine control module connector
is disconnected.
In addition, the diagnostic trouble code can also
be erased by turning the ignition switch to ON and
sending the diagnostic trouble code erase signal
from the scan tool to the engine control module.
Caution
If the sensor connector ‘is disconnected wlth
the’ ignition switch turned on, the diagnostic
trouble code is
In send
the diagnostic trouble code erase to the
engine control module in order to erase the
diagnostic memory.
The 45 diagnostic items are as follows,
and if plural items are activated, they are all ind i-
cated sequentially from the smallest code number.
Caution
The diagnostic trouble code of ignition
adjustment signal is output whenever
for ignition timing adjustment Is grounded.
Therefore, it is not a malfunction that the code
is output when adjusting
The ECM records the diagnostic, trouble code and
the engine operating conditions at the time the
malfunction was detected.’ These are called
“freeze frame” data.
This data indicates the engine operafing condition
from when nothing at all is detected to the initial
detection of malfunction.
This data can be read by using the scan tool, and
can then be used in simulation tests trouble-
shooting. Data items are as follows.,,

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE
ENGINE (NON-TURBO)> Troubleshooting
FAIL-SAFE FUNCTION
If a problem which interferes with the continuous safe operation of the transaxle is identified, the TCM
records a diagnostic trouble code in memory, all so lenoids are turned off, and the module is switched
to limp-in mode.
When limp-in mode is started, the transaxle is locked in gear if a drive gear had previously been
selected. Meanwhile, if
or range was selected, operation is as usual.
If the ignition key is turned to OFF and then back to ON again, limp-in mode is
(a record
is retained).

Use the cartridge adapter harness to connect the

to the data link connector.
Read the diagnostic trouble codes.
Repair the malfunction while referring to the INSPE CTION
CHART FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES.
Turn the ignition switch to OFF and then back to ON
again.
Erase the PCM diagnostic trouble code
immediately after erasing the TCM diagnostic troubl e
code.
7.Check that the diagnostic trouble code is normal.
Caution
NOTE
If the transaxle DTC has been set, (excluding cases where
only part of the DTC has been set), the TCM will le t
the PCM know that a DTC has been sent to the PCM
and a problem has occurred. As a result of this, th e PCM
records the DTC for a transaxle problem
After the transaxle has been repaired, the DTC
which has been stored in the PCM will remain
there without being erased, even after the DTC whic h
is store in the TCM has been erased. Therefore the DTC
in the PCM needs to be erased also.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE 3When ignition key is turned to “ON” (engine stopped ),
ABS warning light does not illuminate
[Comment]When power is supplied to the ABS-ECU, the valve relay changes from to ON by the initial check, and thus even if there is a problem with the circuit between
ABS light and ABS-ECU, the light will illuminate once when the valve relay
is OFF.
Accordingly, the cause of the light not illuminatin g is probably an open circuit in the
light power circuit, a blown light bulb, or an open circuit in both the circuit between
the ABS
light and the ABS-ECU and the circuit between the ABS light and the ABS valve relay. When other lights also do not illuminate, the cause is probably a blown fuse.
