the shift lever
-- push the shift lever all the way into
PARK (P) and release the shift lever button as you
maintain brake application. Then press the shift lever
button and move the shift lever into the gear you wish.
If you ever hold the brake pedal down but still can’t
shift out of PARK (P), try this:
1. Carefully pry the shift lock override cover from the
floor shift console using a fiat-bladed tool.
2. Insert the end of the flat-bladed tool into the
rectangular slot and press down firmly.
3. While maintaining brake application, move the shift lever into the drive gear you want.
4. Have the vehicle fixed as soon as possible.
Parking Your Vehicle (Manual Transaxle)
Before you get out of your vehicle, put your manual
transaxle in
REVERSE (R) (if your vehicle is parked on
a level surface or facing downhill), or put your manual
transaxle in FIRST
(1) (if your vehicle is parked facing
uphill) and firmly apply the parking brake.

Parking Over Things That Burn
Things that can burn cudd touw hot exhaust
parts under your vehicle and ignite. Don’t park
over papers, leaves, dry grass or other things that
can burn.

Engine exhaust can kill. It contains the gas
carbon monoxide
(CO), which you can’t see or
smell.
It can cause unconsciousness and death.
You might have exhaust coming in
if:
Your exhaust system sounds strange
Your vehicle gets rusty underneath.
Your vehicle was damaged in a collision.
Your vehicle was damaged when driving over
high points on the road
or over road debris.
Repairs weren’t done correctly.
Your vehicle or exhaust system had been

Running Your Engine While You’re
Parked (Automatic
Transaxle)
It’s better not to park with the engine running. But if you
ever have to, here are some things to know.
Idling the engine with the climate control
system
off could allow dangerous exhaust into
your vehicle (see the earlier Caution under
“Engine Exhaust”).
Also, idling in a closed-in place can let deadly
carbon monoxide
(CO) into your vehicle even if
the fan switch is at the highest setting. One place
this can happen
is a garage. Exhaust -- with
CO -- can come in easily. NEVER park in a
garage with the engine running.

It can be dangerous to get out of your vehicle if
the shift lever is not fully in PARK (P) with the
parking brake firmly
set. Your vehicle can roll.
Don’t leave your vehicle when the engine is
running unless you have to.
If you’ve left the
engine running, the vehicle can move suddenly.
You or others could be injured.
To be sure your
vehicle won’t move, even when you’re on fairly
level ground, always set your parking brake and
move the shift lever to
PARK (P).
Follow the proper steps to be sure your vehicle won’t
move. See “Shifting Into
PARK (P)” in the Index.

Windows
Manual Windows
Use the window crank to open and close each window. With power
windows, switches on the driver’s door
control each window when the ignition is on.
Push down
the front of the switch to lower a window and lift the
front of the switch to raise
a window.
The AUTO switch for the driver’s window has an
express-down feature. To use express-down, push the
switch down all the way. Release the switch and the
window will lower completely. Pull
up on the switch
lightly and release it to stop
the window partway.

the switch halfway down and releasing it when you want
the window
to stop.
Do not push the switch when the window is in the
express-down mode.
There are individual controls near each window. Push
down the front of the switch to lower a window and lift
the front of the switch to raise a window.
Lock-Out Switch
Press the window lock switch to keep passengers from
using their individual window switches. Press the switch
again to unlock the windows.
Horn
To sound the horn, press anywhere on the horn pad on
your steering wheel.
Tilt Column (Option)
A tilt steering column allows you to adjust the steering
column before you drive.
To tilt the column, pull down on the lever. Move the
steering wheel to a comfortable level, then move the
lever upward
to lock the column in place.

The lever on the left side
of the steering column
includes your:
0 Turn Signal and Lane Change Indicator
0 Headlamp High/Low Beam Changer
Flash-to-Pass
Turn Signal and Lane Change Indicator
The turn signal has two upward (for right) and two
downward (for left) positions. These positions allow
you to signal a turn or a lane change.
To signal a turn, move the lever all the way up or
down. When the turn is finished, the lever will
return automatically. An
arrow on the instrument
panel will flash in the
direction
of the turn or
lane change.
To signal a lane change, just raise
or lower the lever
until the arrow starts to flash. Hold it there until you
complete your lane change. The lever will return by
itself when you release it.
If you signal a turn or a lane change, and notice the
arrow flashing rapidly, a signal bulb may be burned out
and other drivers won’t
see your turn signal.
If a bulb is burned out, have it replaced to help avoid an
accident.
If the arrows don’t go on at all when you
signal a turn, check for burned-out bulbs and then check
the fuse
(see “Fuses and Circuit Breakers” in the Index).

First, you must have the
headlamps on. For high
beams, push the turn signal
lever away from
you. When
the high beams are on, this
light on the instrument
panel also will be
on.
It will go off when you switch to the low beams. To
switch back to low beams, pull the lever toward you.
Flash-to-Pass
With the lever in the low beam position, pull the lever
toward you to momentarily switch to high beams (to
signal that you are going to pass). If you have the
headlamps on when you release the lever, they will
return
to the low beams.
Windshield Wipermasher Lever
The lever on the right side of the steering column
controls the windshield wipers and washer.
Move the lever to the position you want:
OFF: The wipers are off.
INT
This position provides intermittent windshield
wiper operation. In light rain or snow, you might want
to
use this position rather than continuous wiping. You can
change
the time between wipes by turning the INT
TIME band. Turn the band forward or rearward for a
longer or shorter delay intervals.

HI: The wipers will run continuously at high speed.
Be sure to clear
ice and snow from the wiper blades
before using them. If they’re frozen to the windshield,
carefully loosen or thaw them. If your blades do become
damaged, get new blades or blade inserts.
Heavy snow
or ice can overload your wipers. A circuit
breaker will stop them until the motor cools. Clear
away snow or ice to prevent an overload.
Windshield Washer
Pull the end of the lever toward you to spray washer
fluid
on the windshield. The spray will continue until
you release the lever. The wipers will run a few times.
See “Windshield Washer Fluid” in the Index.

A CAU ION:
In freezing weather, don’t use your washer until
the windshield is warmed. Otherwise the washer
fluid can form ice on the windshield, blocking
your vision.

With cruise control, you
can maintain a speed of
about
25 mph (40 kmh) or
more without keeping your
foot
on the accelerator. This
can really help on long
trips. Cruise control does
not
work at speeds below
about
25 mph (40 kmk).

If you leave your cruise control switch on when
you’re not using cruise, you might hit a button
and go into cruise when you don’t want to.
You
could be startled and even lose control. Keep the
cruise control switch
off until you want to use it.

@ Cruise control can be dangerous where you
can’t drive safely at a steady speed.
So,
don’t use your cruise control on winding
roads or in heavy traffic.

in tire traction can cause needless wheel
spinning, and you could lose control. Don’t
use cruise control on sliDpery roads.

Suppose you set your cruise control at a desired speed
and then
you apply the brake. This, of course, shuts off
the cruise control. But you don’t need to reset it.
Unless you’re going about
25 mph (40 km/h) or less or
you slowed down to 10 mph (16 kmh) less than your
preset speed, you can press the lever up to RESIACC
(Resume/Accelerate) for about half
a second.
You’ll go right back up to your chosen speed and
stay there.
If your preset speed cancels out when it shouldn’t,
there may be
a problem with your cruise control.
See your dealer.
Increasing Speed While Using Cruise Control
There are two ways to go to a higher speed:
Use the accelerator pedal to get to the higher speed.
Push
the lever to SETICOAST and hold it for less
than a second. Release the lever and the accelerator
pedal. You’ll now cruise at the higher speed.
Move the cruise lever up to RESIACC. Hold
it there until
you get up to the speed you want, and
then release the lever. (To increase your speed in
very small amounts, move the lever to RESIACC
for less than half a second and then release
it.
Each time you do this, your vehicle will go about
1 mph (1.6 km/h) faster.)
Reducing Speed While Using Cruise Control
There are two ways to reduce your speed while using
cruise control:
Push the lever to SETICOAST until you reach the
lower speed you want,
then release it.
To slow down in very small amounts, push the lever
for less than half a second. Each time
you do this,
you’ll
go 1 mph (1.6 km/h) slower.
Passing Another Vehicle While Using Cruise Control
Use the accelerator pedal to increase your speed. When
you take your foot off the pedal, your vehicle will slow
down to the cruise control speed you set earlier.

How well your cruise control will work on hills depends
upon
your speed, load and the steepness of the hills.
When going up steep hills, you may have
to step on the
accelerator pedal to maintain your speed. When going
downhill, you may have to brake
or shift to a lower gear
to keep your speed down.
Of course, applying the brake
or downshifting to SECOND
(2) or LOW (L) takes you
out of cruise control. Many drivers find this to be too
much trouble and don’t use cruise control on steep hills.
Ending Out of Cruise Control
There are several ways to turn off the cruise control:
Step lightly on the brake pedal or push the clutch
pedal, if you have a manual transaxle.

your cruise control set speed memory is erased.
Exterior Lamps
Headlamps
Turn the outside part of the
lever to control the lamps.
There are three positions for
the lamp switch.
OFF: All lamps, except your Daytime Running Lamps
(DRL), are
off.
CENTER: At the middle position, the parking lamps,
taillamps, license plate lamp and the instrument panel
lights come
on. The headlamps are off and DRL is on.
- Eo - : The headlamps and all other operating lamps
come
on. DRL is off.
