Vehicle Damage Warnings
Also, in this manual you will nd these notices:
Notice:These mean there is something
that could damage your vehicle.
A notice tells about something that can damage
the vehicle. Many times, this damage would not be
covered by your vehicle’s warranty, and it could
be costly. But the notice will tell what to do to help
avoid the damage.
When you read other manuals, you might see
CAUTION and NOTICE warnings in different colors
or in different words.
There are also warning labels on the vehicle. They
use the same words, CAUTION or NOTICE.
Vehicle Symbols
The vehicle has components and labels that use
symbols instead of text. Symbols are shown along
with the text describing the operation or information
relating to a specic component, control, message,
gage, or indicator.
If you need help guring out a specic name of a
component, gage, or indicator, reference the
following topics:
Seats and Restraint Systems in Section 1
Features and Controls in Section 2
Instrument Panel Overview in Section 3
Climate Controls in Section 3
Warning Lights, Gages, and Indicators in
Section 3
Audio System(s) in Section 3
Engine Compartment Overview in Section 5

To start the vehicle using the remote start feature,
do the following:
1. Aim the transmitter at the vehicle.
2. Press and release the transmitter’s lock button,
then immediately press and hold the
transmitter’s remote start button until the turn
signal lights ash. If you can not see the
vehicle’s lights, press and hold the remote start
button for at least four seconds. The vehicle’s
doors will lock. Pressing the remote start button
again after the vehicle has started will turn off
the ignition.
When the vehicle starts, the parking lamps will
turn on and remain on while the vehicle is
running.
3. If it is your rst remote start since last driving,
repeat these steps while the engine is still
running for a 10 minute time extension.
Remote start can be extended one time.
When you enter the vehicle during a remote start,
and the engine is still running, turn the key to
the RUN position to drive the vehicle.
If the vehicle is left running it will automatically
shut off after 10 minutes unless a time extension
has been done.To manually shut off a remote start, do any of the
following:
Aim the remote keyless entry transmitter at
the vehicle and press the remote start
button until the parking lamps turn off.
Turn on the hazards warning ashers.
Turn the ignition switch on and then off.
The vehicle can be remote started two separate
times between driving sequences. The engine will
run for 10 minutes after each remote start.
Or, you can extend the engine run time by another
10 minutes within the rst 10 minute remote
start time frame, and before the engine stops.
For example, if the lock button and then the remote
start buttons are pressed again after the vehicle has
been running for ve minutes, 10 minutes are
added, allowing the engine to run for 15 minutes.
The additional ten minutes are considered a
second remote vehicle start.
Once two remote starts, or a single remote start
with one time extension has been done, the
vehicle must be started with the key.
After the key is removed from the ignition, the
vehicle can be remote started again.

Obstacle Detection Features
If the liftgate encounters an obstacle during a
power open or close cycle, a warning chime will
sound and the liftgate will automatically reverse
direction to the full closed or open position.
After removing the obstruction, the liftgate may be
power opened or closed normally. If the liftgate
encounters multiple obstacles on the same power
cycle, the power function will deactivate, and
the liftgate will switch to manual operation.
The REAR ACCESS OPEN warning message in
the Driver Information Center (DIC) will indicate
that the liftgate is open. After removing the
obstructions, manually open the liftgate to the full
open position or close the liftgate to the fully
closed and latched position. The liftgate will now
resume normal power operation.
Your vehicle has pinch sensors located on the
side edges of the liftgate. If an object is caught
between the liftgate and the body and presses
against this sensor, the liftgate will reverse
direction and open fully. The liftgate will remain
open until it is activated again or closed manually.
Manual Operation of Power Liftgate
To change the liftgate to
manual operation,
toggle the switch on the
overhead console to
the “Disable” position
indicated by a circle.
With the power liftgate disabled and the door
unlocked, the power liftgate can be manually
opened and closed.
To open the liftgate, press the touchpad on the
handle on the outside of the liftgate, and lift
the gate open. To close the liftgate, use the pull
cup or pull strap to lower the liftgate and close.
The liftgate latch will power cinch to closed
position. Always close the liftgate before driving.
If the RKE button or the power close button on the
liftgate is pressed while power operation is
disabled, the lights will ash three times, but the
liftgate will not move.

Indicator lights in the button will come on to show
which setting you are in. The indicator lights
will come on briey when you turn on the ignition
and one will stay on. If the lights do not come
on, you should take your vehicle to your dealer for
service. An indicator light will ash while shifting
the transfer case. It will remain on when the shift is
complete. If for some reason the transfer case
cannot make a requested shift, it will return to the
last chosen setting.
If the SERVICE 4 WHEEL DRIVE message stays
on, you should take your vehicle to your dealer
for service. See “SERVICE 4 WHEEL DRIVE
message” underDIC Warnings and Messages on
page 254.
Shifting Into Four-Wheel Drive High or
AUTO (Automatic Four-Wheel Drive)
Turn the knob to the Four-Wheel High or AUTO
position. This can be done at any speed,
except when shifting from Four-Wheel Drive Low,
and the indicator light will ash while shifting. It
will remain on when the shift is completed.
Shifting Into Two-Wheel Drive High
Turn the knob to the Two-Wheel High position.
This can be done at any speed, except when
shifting from Four-Wheel Drive Low.
Shifting Into Four-Wheel Drive Low
To shift to the Four-Wheel Drive Low position, the
ignition must be in RUN and the vehicle must
be stopped or moving less than 3 mph (5 km/h)
with the transmission in NEUTRAL (N). The
preferred method for shifting into four-wheel low
is to have your vehicle moving 1 to 2 mph
(1.6 to 3.2 km/h). Turn the knob to the Four-Wheel
Drive Low position. You must wait for the
Four-Wheel Drive Low indicator light to stop
ashing and remain on before shifting your
transmission in gear.
Notice:Shifting the transmission into gear
before the Four-Wheel Low indicator light has
stopped ashing could damage the transfer
case. To help avoid damaging your vehicle,
always wait for the Four-Wheel Low indicator
light to stop ashing before shifting the
transmission into gear.

Warning Lights, Gages, and
Indicators
This part describes the warning lights and gages
on your vehicle. The pictures will help you
locate them.
Warning lights and gages can signal that
something is wrong before it becomes serious
enough to cause an expensive repair or
replacement. Paying attention to your warning
lights and gages could also save you or others
from injury.
Warning lights come on when there may be or is
a problem with one of your vehicle’s functions.
As you will see in the details on the next few
pages, some warning lights come on briey when
you start the engine just to let you know they
are working. If you are familiar with this section,
you should not be alarmed when this happens.Gages can indicate when there may be or is a
problem with one of your vehicle’s functions.
Often gages and warning lights work together to
let you know when there is a problem with
your vehicle.
When one of the warning lights comes on and
stays on when you are driving, or when one of the
gages shows there may be a problem, check
the section that tells you what to do about
it. Please follow this manual’s advice. Waiting to
do repairs can be costly – and even dangerous.
So please get to know your warning lights
and gages. They are a big help.
Your vehicle also has a Driver Information Center
(DIC) that works along with warning lights and
gages. SeeDIC Warnings and Messages
on page 254.

If, after several seconds, all status indicator lights
remain on, or if there are no lights at all, there
may be a problem with the lights or the passenger
sensing system. See your dealer for service.
{CAUTION:
If the off indicator and the airbag
readiness light ever come on together, it
means that something may be wrong with
the airbag system. If this ever happens,
have the vehicle serviced promptly,
because an adult-size person sitting in the
right front passenger seat may not have
the protection of the frontal airbag. See
Airbag Readiness Light on page 227.
Charging System Light
The charging system
light will come on briey
when you turn on the
ignition, but the
engine is not running,
as a check to show you
it is working.
It should go out once the engine is running.
If it stays on, or comes on while you are driving,
you may have a problem with the charging system.
It could indicate that you have problems with the
generator, the generator drive belt, or another
electrical problem. Have it checked right away.
Driving while this light is on could drain your
battery.
When this light comes on, the DIC will also display
the SERVICE BATTERY NOT CHARGING
SYSTEM message. SeeDIC Warnings and
Messages on page 254for more information.
If you must drive a short distance with the light on,
be certain to turn off all your accessories, such as
the radio and air conditioner, to reduce the drain on
your battery.

Anti-Lock Brake System Warning
Light
With the anti-lock brake
system, this light will
come on when you start
your engine and may
stay on for several
seconds.
That’s normal. If the light does not come on then,
have it xed so it will be ready to warn you if
there is a problem. If the light stays on, or comes on when you are
driving, your vehicle needs service. You will
also hear a chime sound when the light is on
steady. If the regular brake system warning light is
not on, you still have brakes, but you do not
have anti-lock brakes. If the regular brake system
warning light is also on you do not have anti-lock
brakes and there is a problem with your regular
brakes. In addition to both lights, you will also hear
a chime sound on the rst occurrence of a
problem and each time the vehicle is shut off and
then restarted. SeeBrake System Warning
Light on page 232.
The anti-lock brake system warning light should
come on briey when you turn the ignition
key to RUN. If the light does not come on then,
have it xed so it will be ready to warn you if there
is a problem.
