7OPERATING THE MANUAL TRANSAXLE
OMC035013 NOTE:
o To shift into reverse, rest the lever
in neutral for at least 3 seconds after your car is completelystopped. Then move the lever into the reverse position.
o During cold weather, shifting may be difficult until the transaxle lu-bricant has warmed up. This is normal and not harmful to thetransaxle.
o If you've come to a complete stop
and it's hard to shift into 1 st
or
R(Reverse), put the shift lever in N(Neutral) position and release the clutch. Press the clutch pedalback down, and then shift into 1 st
or R(Reverse) gear position.
o Do not use the shift lever as a handrest during driving, as this can result in premature wear of the transaxle shift forks.
C070A03MC-GAT Your Hyundai's manual transaxle has five forward gears and one reverse gear. This shift pattern is imprinted on the shift knob. The transaxle is fullysynchronized in all forward gears so shifting to either a higher or a lower gear is easily accomplished.When shifting into reverse gear, pull the mis-shift prevention tab and shift into reverse gear position.
CAUTION:
o Do not downshift more than 2 gears or downshift the gear when the engine is running at high speed (5,000 RPM or higher). Such down-shifting may damage the engine.
o When downshifting from fifth gear
to fourth gear, caution should betaken not to inadvertently press the gear lever sideways in such a manner that second gear is en-gaged. Such a drastic downshift may cause the engine speed to increase to the point that the ta- chometer will enter the red-zone. Such over-revving of the enginemay possibly cause engine dam- age.

o Never take the car out of gear andcoast down a hill. This is extremely hazardous. Always leave the car in gear.
o Don't "ride" the brakes. This can cause them to overheat and mal-function. Instead, when you are driv- ing down a long hill, slow down andshift to a lower gear. When you do this, engine braking will help slow the car.
o Slow down before shifting to a lower gear. This will help avoid over-rev-ving the engine, which can causedamage.
o Slow down when you encounter cross
winds. This gives you much bettercontrol of your car.
o Be sure the car is completely stopped
before you attempt to shift into re-verse. The transaxle can be dam- aged if you do not. To shift into reverse, depress the clutch, movethe shift lever to neutral, wait three seconds, then shift to the reverse position.
o Exercise extreme caution when driv- ing on a slippery surface. Be espe-

C070B01A-AAT Using the Clutch The clutch should be pressed all the way to the floor before shifting, thenreleased slowly. The clutch pedal should always be used after fully re- turning to the original position. Do notrest your foot on the clutch pedal while driving. This can cause unnecessary wear. Do not partially engage the clutchto hold the car on an incline. This causes unnecessary wear. Use the parking brake to hold the car on anincline. Do not operate the clutch pedal rapidly and repeatedly.
!WARNING:
If your vehicle has a manual transaxle not equipped with a ignition lock switch, it may move and cause aserious accident when starting the engine without depressing the clutch pedal while the parking brake is re-leased and the shift lever not in the N(Neutral) position.

This means that no shift-up to 3rd gear is performed. However, the shift-up tothird gear is done when the car speed exceeds a certain value to prevent the
engine from over-revving. Manuallymove the selector to "D" returning to normal driving condition.
C090E02A-AAT o D (Drive): Use for normal driving. Bring the car to a complete stop before shifting the selector to "D" position. The transaxlewill automatically shift through a four- gear sequence. Never downshift manu- ally to "2" position or "L" position whenvehicle speed is more than 95 km/h (60 mph).
C090C01A-AAT o R (Reverse): Use for backing up the vehicle. Bring the car to a complete stop before shift-ing the selector lever to "R" position. C090G01A-GAT o L (Low gear): Use for driving up a very steep grade or for engine braking when descendingsteep hills. When downshifting to "L", the transaxle will temporarily remain in second gear until the vehicle hasslowed enough for low gear to engage. Do not exceed 50 km/h (30 mph) in low gear.
C090D02A-AAT o N (Neutral): In the "N" position, the transaxle is in neutral, which means that no gearsare engaged. The engine can be started with the shift lever in "N" position, although this is not recommended ex-cept if the engine stalls while the car is moving.
C090B02A-AAT The Function of Each Position Is As Follows: o P (Park): Use to hold the vehicle in place when parking or while starting the engine. Whenever parking the car, apply the parking brake and shift the selectorlever to the "P" (Park) position.

CAUTION:
Never place the selector lever in the "P" (Park) position unless the ve- hicle is fully stopped. Failure toobserve this caution will cause se- vere damage to the transaxle.

o The brake pedal fully depressed in order to move the shift lever from the "P" (Park) position to any of the other positions.
o It is always possible to shift from
"R", "N", "D", "2", "L" position to"P" position. The vehicle must be fully stopped to avoidtransaxle damage.

o Shift into "R", "D" and "P" posi- tion only when the vehicle has completely stopped.
o Do not accelerate the engine in reverse or any of the forwardpositions with the brakes applied.
o Always apply the footbrake when shifting from "P" or "N", to "R",
"D", "2" or "L" position.
o Do not use the "P" (Park) position in place of the parking brake.Always set the parking brake, shift the transaxle into "P" (Park)position and turn off the ignition when you leave the vehicle, even momentarily.

C090P01A-GAT Overdrive Switch When the overdrive switch is turned on, the transaxle will automatically upshiftto the second, third and overdrive gears. When the overdrive switch is turned off, the transaxle will not upshift to theoverdrive gear. For normal driving, the selector lever should be left in the "D" position and the overdrive switch turnedon. If you need to accelerate rapidly, press the accelerator pedal all the way to thefloor. The transaxle will automatically shift to a lower gear, depending on the vehicle speed and load.
Never leave the vehicle unattendedwhile the engine is running.
o When accelerating from a stop on
a steep hill, the vehicle may havea tendency to roll backwards. Shift- ing the shift lever into 2nd gear will help prevent the vehicle fromrolling backwards.
o Check the automatic transaxle fluid
level regularly, and add fluid asnecessary.
o See the maintenance schedule for
the proper fluid recommendation.
E060103AUN Ignition key interlock system (If Installed) The ignition key cannot be removed unless the shift lever is in the P (Park) position. If the ignition switch is in anyother position, the key cannot be re- moved.

!WARNING:
o Avoid high cornering speeds.
o Do not make quick steering wheel movements, such as sharp lanechanges or fast, sharp turns.
o Exercise extreme caution when driv-
ing on a slippery surface. Be espe-cially careful when braking, acceler- ating or shifting gears. On a slippery surface, an abrupt change in ve-hicle speed can cause the drive wheels to lose traction and the ve- hicle to go out of control.
o Optimum vehicle performance and economy is obtained by smoothlydepressing and releasing the accel-erator pedal.
o Turn the overdrive switch on for good
fuel economy and smooth driving. Ifengine braking is needed in the "D" range or if repeated upshifting and downshifting between 3rd and 4thgear is needed when climbing a gentle slope, it is recommended that the overdrive switch be turned off. Turnthe overdrive switch back on imme- diately afterward.

o Never move the gear selector lever
from "P" or "N" to any other position with the accelerator pedal de- pressed.
o Never move the gear selector lever into "P" when the vehicle is in mo-tion.
o Be sure the car is completely stopped before you attempt to shift into "R" or"D".
o Never take the car out of gear and coast down a hill. This may be ex-tremely hazardous. Always leave the car in gear when moving.
o Do not "ride" the brakes. This can cause them to overheat and mal-function. Instead, when you are driv-ing down a long hill, slow down and shift to a lower gear. When you do this, engine braking will help slowthe car.
o Slow down before shifting to a lower
gear. Otherwise, the lower gear maynot be engaged.
o Always use the parking brake. Do
not depend on placing the transaxlein "P" to keep the car from moving. o Always wear your seat belts.
In a collision crash, an unbeltedperson is significantly more likelyto die than a person wearing a seatbelt.
o The risk of rollover is greatly in- creased if you lose control ofyour vehicle at highway speeds.
o Loss of control often occurs if two or more wheels drop off theroadway and the driver oversteers to reenter the roadway.
o In the event your vehicle leaves the roadway, do not steer sharply.Instead, slow down before pull- ing back into the travel lanes.
o Never exceed posted speed limits.
o If your vehicle becomes stuck in snow, mud, sand, etc., then youmay attempt to rock the vehiclefree by moving it forward and back- ward. Do not attempt this proce- dure if people or objects are any-where near the vehicle. During the rocking operation the vehicle may suddenly move forward of back-ward as it becomes unstuck, caus- ing injury or damage to nearby people or objects.

!WARNING:
ABS (ESP) will not prevent accidents due to improper or dangerous driv- ing maneuvers. Even though vehiclecontrol is improved during emer- gency braking, always maintain a safe distance between you and ob-jects ahead. Vehicle speeds should always be reduced during extreme road conditions. The braking distance for cars equipped with an anti-lock braking system (Electronic Stability Program)may be longer than for those without it in the following road conditions. During these conditions, the ve-hicle should be driven at reduced speeds.
o Rough, gravel or snow-covered roads.
o With tire chains installed.
o On roads where the road surface
is pitted or has different surface height. The safety features of an ABS (ESP) equipped vehicle should not be testedby high speed driving or cornering. This could endanger the safety of yourself or others.
ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM
C120A01FC-GAT (If Installed) The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) is designed to prevent wheel lock-upduring sudden braking or on hazard- ous road surfaces. The ABS control module monitors the wheel speed andcontrols the pressure applied to each brake. Thus, in emergency situations or on slick roads, ABS will increasevehicle control during braking. NOTE:
o A click sound may be heard in the engine compartment when the ve- hicle begins to move after the en- gine is started. These conditionsare normal and indicate that the anti-lock brake system (Electronic Stability Program) is functioningproperly.
o During ABS (ESP) operation, a
slight pulsation may be felt in thebrake pedal when the brakes are applied. Also, a noise may be heard in the engine compartment whilebraking. These conditions are normal and indicate that the anti- lock brake system (Electronic Sta-bility Program) is functioning prop- erly.

CAUTION:
Driving with varying tire or wheel size may cause the ESP system to malfunction. When replacing tires,make sure they are the same size as your original tires.!
ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAM (ESP)
C310A01JM-AAT (If Installed) It is not a substitute for safe driving practices. Factors including speed, roadconditions and driver steering input can all affect whether ESP will be effective in preventing a loss of control. It is stillyour responsibility to drive and corner at reasonable speeds and to leave a sufficient margin of safety.
OMC029101 C310B01JM-AAT ESP ON/OFF Mode When the ESP is operating, the ESP indicator in the instrument cluster willblink. If you turn the system off by pressing the ESP switch, the ESP-OFF indica-tor will come on and stay on. In the ESP-OFF mode, the stability control will be deactivated. Adjust your drivingaccordingly. To turn the system back on, press the switch again. The ESP- OFF indicator should go off. NOTE: The ESP mode will automatically be turned ON after the engine is turnedoff and restarted.
The Electronic Stability Program (ESP)system is designed to stabilize thevehicle during cornering maneuvers. ESP checks where you are steering and where the vehicle is actually going.ESP applies the brakes at individual wheels and intervenes in the engine management system to stabilize thevehicle. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) system is an electronic system de- signed to help the driver maintain ve- hicle control under adverse conditions. WARNING:
Electronic stability program is onlya driving aid; all normal precautionsfor driving in inclement weather and on slippery road surfaces should be observed.

C310D01JM-AAT Indicators and Warning The indicators should illuminate when the ignition key is turned to ON orSTART but should go out after three seconds. If the indicators do not illuminate, or theESP or ESP-OFF indicator does not go out after 3 seconds, have the vehicle checked by an authorized dealer. Should there be any unusual conditions in the device while driving, ESP-OFFindicator illuminates as a warning. If ESP-OFF indicator illuminates, pull your car to a safe place and stop theengine. Then, start the engine again to check if the ESP-OFF indicator goes out. If the indicator remains lit even after the engine has been started, have your carchecked by an authorized Hyundai dealer. Take your vehicle to an authorized HYUNDAI dealer and have the systemchecked. NOTE:
o The VSM does not operate when:
- Driving on bank road such asgradient or incline
- Driving rearward - ESP-OFF indicator light remains
on the instrument cluster
- EPS indicator light remains on
the instrument cluster
o The VSM is designed to function above approximately 15 km/h (9mph) on curves.
o The VSM is designed to function above approximately 30 km/h (18mph) when a vehicle is braking ona split-mu road. The split-mu road is made of surfaces which have different friction forces.
o Your vehicle is designed to acti- vate according to the driver’s in-tention, even with installed VSM.Always follow all the normal pre- cautions for driving - including driving at safe speeds for the con-ditions.VEHICLE STABILITY MAN- AGEMENT (VSM)
(If Installed) This system provides further enhance- ments to vehicle stability and steeringresponses when a vehicle is driving on a slippery road or a vehicle detected changes in coefficient of friction be-tween right wheels and left wheels when braking. VSM ON/OFF mode When the VSM is operating, the ESP indicator light on the instrument clusterwill blink and you can feel a slight pulsation of the steering wheel. If you want to cancel the VSM opera-tion, press the ESP-OFF switch. If you press the ESP-OFF switch, the VSM and ESP function will be deactivatedand ESP OFF indicator light will come on and stay on. To turn the system back on, press theESP-OFF switch again. The ESP-OFF indicator light will go out. The VSM can be deactivated even ifyou don’t cancel the VSM operation by pressing the ESP-OFF switch. It indi- cates that a malfunction has been de-tected somewhere in the EPS (Elec- tronic Power Steering) system or VSM system.

o Don't coast down hills with the car out of gear. This is extremely haz-
ardous. Keep the car in gear at all times, use the brakes to slow down, then shift to a lower gear so thatengine braking will help you main- tain a safe speed.
o Don't "ride" the brake pedal. Rest- ing your foot on the brake pedal
while driving can be dangerous be- cause it can result in the brakesoverheating and losing their effec- tiveness. It also increases the wear of the brake components.
o If a tire goes flat while you are driving, apply the brakes gently andkeep the car pointed straight aheadwhile you slow down. When you are moving slowly enough for it to be safe to do so, pull off the road andstop in a safe place.
o If your car is equipped with an auto-
matic transaxle, don't let your carcreep forward. To avoid creeping forward, keep your foot firmly on the
brake pedal when the car is stopped.
o Use caution when parking on a hill. Engage the parking brake and placethe gear selector lever in "P" (auto-matic transaxle) or in first or reverse gear (manual transaxle). If your caris facing downhill, turn the frontwheels into the curb to help keep the car from rolling. If your car is facing
uphill, turn the front wheels awayfrom the curb to help keep the car from rolling. If there is no curb or if it is requiredby other conditions to keep the car from rolling, block the wheels.
o Under some conditions your park- ing brake can freeze in the engagedposition. This is most likely to hap- pen when there is an accumulationof snow or ice around or near the rear brakes or if the brakes are wet. If there is a risk that the parkingbrake may freeze, apply it only tem- porarily while you put the gear se- lector lever in "P" (automatic) or infirst or reverse gear (manual transaxle) and block the rear wheels so the car cannot roll. Then releasethe parking brake.
o Do not hold the vehicle on the up-
grade with the accelerator pedal.This can cause the transmission to overheat. Always use the brake pedal or parking brake.DRIVING FOR ECONOMY
C140A01A-GAT You can save fuel and get more kilo- meters from your car if you follow these suggestions:
o Drive smoothly. Accelerate at a moderate rate. Don't make "jack- rabbit" starts or full-throttle shiftsand maintain a steady cruising speed. Don't race between stop- lights. Try to adjust your speed tothat of the other traffic so you don't have to change speeds unneces- sarily. Avoid heavy traffic wheneverpossible. Always maintain a safe distance from other vehicles so you can avoidunnecessary braking. This also re- duces brake wear.
o Drive at a moderate speed. The faster you drive, the more fuel yourcar uses. Driving at a moderate speed, especially on the highway, isone of the most effective ways to reduce fuel consumption.

o Don't "lug" or "over-rev" the engine.Lugging is driving too slowly in too high a gear resulting in the engine bucking. If this happens, shift to a lower gear. Over-revving is racingthe engine beyond its safe limit. This can be avoided by shifting at the recommended speeds.
o Use your air conditioning sparingly. The air conditioning system is oper-ated by engine power so your fueleconomy is reduced when you use it.
more frequent maintenance is re- quired (see Section 5 for details).
o Keep your car clean. For maximum service, your Hyundai should bekept clean and free of corrosivematerials. It is especially important that mud, dirt, ice, etc. not be al- lowed to accumulate on the under-side of the car. This extra weight can result in increased fuel con- sumption and also contribute to cor-rosion.
o Travel lightly. Don't carry unneces-
sary weight in your car. Weight re-duces fuel economy.
o Don't let the engine idle longer than
necessary. If you are waiting (andnot in traffic), turn off your engine and restart only when you're ready to go.
o Remember, your Hyundai does not require extended warm-up. As soonas the engine is running smoothly,you can drive away. In very cold weather, however, give your engine a slightly longer warm-up period.
o Don't "ride" the brake or clutch pedal.
This can increase fuel consumptionand also increase wear on these components. In addition, driving with your foot resting on the brake pedalmay cause the brakes to overheat, which reduces their effectiveness and may lead to more serious con-sequences.
o Take care of your tires. Keep them
inflated to the recommended pres-sure. Incorrect inflation, either too much or too little, results in unnec- essary tire wear. Check the tire pres-sures at least once a month.
o Be sure that the wheels are aligned
correctly. Improper alignment canresult from hitting curbs or driving too fast over irregular surfaces. Poor alignment causes faster tire wearand may also result in other prob- lems as well as greater fuel con- sumption.
o Keep your car in good condition. For better fuel economy and reducedmaintenance costs, maintain yourcar in accordance with the mainte- nance schedule in Section 5. If you drive your car in severe conditions,
