Engine exhaust fumes can be ex‐tremely dangerous. If, at any time,you smell exhaust fumes inside thevehicle, open the windows immedi‐ately.•Do not inhale exhaust fumes.Exhaust fumes contain carbonmonoxide, a colorless, odorless gasthat can cause unconsciousnessand death by asphyxiation.
•Be sure the exhaust system doesnot leak.The exhaust system should bechecked whenever the vehicle israised to change the oil or for anyother purpose. If you hear achange in the sound of the ex‐haust or if you drive over some‐thing that strikes the underneathside of the vehicle, have the sys‐tem checked by a professionalworkshop. Kia recommends to visitan authorized Kia dealer/servicepartner.

•Do not run the engine in an en‐closed area.Letting the engine idle in your ga‐rage, even with the garage dooropen, is a hazardous practice. Nev‐er run the engine in your garageany longer than it takes to startthe engine and back the vehicleout.
•Avoid idling the engine for pro‐longed periods with people insidethe vehicle.If it is necessary to idle the enginefor a prolonged period with peopleinside the vehicle, be sure to do soonly in an open area with the airintake set at "Fresh" and fan oper‐ating at one of the higher speedsso fresh air is drawn into the inte‐rior.
If you must drive with the tailgate/trunk open because you are carryingobjects that make this necessary:1.Close all windows.

•The anti-theft steering columnlock (if equipped) is not a substi‐tute for the parking brake. Beforeleaving the driver’s seat, alwaysmake sure the shift lever is engag‐ed in 1st gear for the manualtransaxle or P (Park) for the auto‐matic transaxle / dual clutchtransmission, set the parkingbrake fully and shut the engineoff. Unexpected and sudden vehi‐cle movement may occur if theseprecautions are not taken.
•Never reach for the ignitionswitch, or any other controlsthrough the steering wheel whilethe vehicle is in motion. The pres‐ence of your hand or arm in thisarea could cause a loss of vehiclecontrol, an accident and seriousbodily injury or death.
•Do not place any movable objectsaround the driver’s seat as theymay move while driving, interferewith the driver and lead to an acci‐dent.
Starting the engine
WARNING
•Always wear appropriate shoeswhen operating your vehicle. Un‐suitable shoes (high heels, skiboots, etc.) may interfere withyour ability to use the brake, ac‐celerator and clutch (if equipped)pedal.
•Do not start the vehicle with theaccelerator pedal depressed. Thevehicle can move and lead to anaccident.
•Wait until the engine rpm is nor‐mal. The vehicle may suddenlymove if the brake pedal is releasedwhen the rpm is high.

CAUTION
If the engine stalls while you are inmotion, do not attempt to move theshift lever to the P (Park) position. Iftraffic and road conditions permit,you may put the shift lever in the N(Neutral) position while the vehicle isstill moving and turn the ignitionswitch to the START position in anattempt to restart the engine.
CAUTION
•Do not engage the starter formore than 10 seconds. If the en‐gine stalls or fails to start, wait 5to 10 seconds before re-engagingthe starter. Improper use of thestarter may damage it.
•Do not turn the ignition switch tothe START position with the en‐gine running. It may damage thestarter.
