Tumble system
The tumble system is made up of diaphragms commanded according to the characteristic diagram of the engine,
and are used to restrict emissions. The diaphragms are closed (so the valve is disabled) at low speed and low load. There are two operation speeds depending on the water temperature.

cylinder.
The intake manifold diaphragms are opened, releasing the entire section of the duct when power is demanded of
the engine. All diaphragms of a cylinder bank are fastened to a common camshaft.
The position of the intake manifold diaphragms for each cylinder bank is checked by the Hall sensors which, in the
event of incorrect reading, send the information to the ECU that turns on the engine malfunction warning light. This information can be seen using the LaRa-AS .
The intake manifold diaphragms are enabled by a cylinder bank vacuum positioner in the engine for high rotation
speeds. Feedback of the position of the diaphragms is provided in this case as well, through the Hall sensors. In
the case of malfunctioning, they send the information to the ECU. Also in this case the errors can be read using the LaRa-AS .
The system is in stand-by (therefore enabled) with the engine cold, TH2O < 60°C, and with a torque demand
< 40% beneath 2000 rpm.
The system is operating (therefore disabled) with the engine hot, TH2O > 60°C, and with a torque demand < 40%
beneath 3000 rpm. The activation solenoid valve for the vacuum system is underneath the intake manifold: • it is enabled when the intake manifold is closed
• it is disabled when the intake manifold is open
6ROHQRLGYDOYH Tumble rpm Torque TH2O
Off On 0÷2000 rpm < 40% < 60°C
Off On 0÷3000 rpm < 40% > 60°C
On Off over 2000 rpm > 40% < 60°C
On Off over 3000 rpm > 40% > 60°C
Malfunctioning is detected by the LaRa-AS system and can be caused by a lack of vacuum
(therefore, leakage in the circuit) or in the two position detection sensors.

During braking the ABS function allows the modulation of the braking force effectively applied to each wheel, thus preventing one or more wheels from becoming blocked, which would otherwise cause the loss of control of the vehicle.
The control unit carries out the corrections to the braking by reading the relative speed of each wheel, obtained by special sensors (pick-up).
To guarantee a good signal quality, the distance between the pick-up and the phonic wheel must be between 0.9
÷ 1.0 mm. The electro-hydraulic control unit carries out all the corrections on the braking, using 4 ISO valves and 4
DUMP valves. When an ISO valve is closed, the disc brake calliper is isolated from the hydraulic pump.
The DUMP valve, on the other hand, is used to reduce the pressure of the corresponding disc brake calliper that
is present in the hydraulic circuit. If, during normal use of the vehicle, the ABS warning light on the dashboard is
switched on and the buzzer sounds at the same time, it means that the ABS control unit has found a fault in the
system. When the warning light is on the ABS does not work; this means that in the vehicle the braking system works
anyway, but the electronic control on the braking is deactivated. $%6V\VWHPYDFXXPUHFRYHU\SXPS
The electric vacuum recovery pump is positioned in the front bumper area and is controlled by the MASTER engine injection control unit only with the engine running.
Its operation is determined by a pressure sensor that calculates its drop and makes the pump cut in to maintain the vacuum. Its operation can be checked by means of the LaRa-AS engine control unit “01” Basic setting 8 (109000).

Important!
Check that the battery is completely charged (if necessary recharge it with a battery charger) and disconnect all of the car’s loads (radio, lights, A/C, etc.), except for those necessary for engine operation.
• Lift the vehicle on the car lift and connect a voltmeter and a 150A or higher ammeter clamp onto the alternator’s
output cable:
Voltmeter “V” and ammeter clamp “A” connection (Fig.4)
A. Battery
% Junction
C. Starter
• Start the engine and bring it to 2,000 rpm.
• Using the voltmeter, check that the voltage generated by the alternator falls within the values in the chart
( Fig.5 ).
• Using the ammeter clamp, check that the alternator supplies current. This current might initially be very high
(100A at 2,000 rpm) but then gradually decreases as the battery recharges. The current depends on the engine’s speed ( Fig.6).

The electronic control unit governs and activates the various airbag modules and is secured to the car’s tunnel under the console (Fig.1).
The control unit is connected to:• front airbags (driver side airbag module and passenger side airbag module)
• LH and RH side airbags
• LH and RH seatbelt pretensioners
• LH and RH side impact sensors
On the inside, the control unit has: • an electromechanical sensor which discriminates the “activation/deactivation” conditions according to the
vehicle’s longitudinal deceleration;
• an electromagnetic safety sensor operating with the electromechanical sensor; both sensors must enable the
“activation” condition for the system to be deployed;
The electronic control unit analyzes the signals coming from the internal and external sensors (side impact) and,
based on appropriate strategies (which consider the impact’s force and angle), normally activates: • In the case of frontal impact : the driver side airbag module, the passenger side airbag module and the two
seatbelt pretensioners.
• In the case of side impact : the side airbag and the seatbelt pretensioner on the side of the impact.
The control unit has a self-diagnostic feature that checks the entire system’s operation when the ignition key is turned
to “ON”. During the test a red warning light on the dashboard turns on. The warning light turns off approximately four
seconds after the engine is started if the system is working correctly.
