=If you are driving at a speed greater than
2.5 mph (4 km/h).
If you have selected the automatic mode in the
multimedia system and you manually extend the
running boards when the doors are closed, the
running boards will remain extended. Even if you open a door and then close it again, the running
boards will remain extended. Automatic mode will
be reactivated only when you are driving at a
speed greater than 2.5 mph (4 km/h).&WARNING Risk of injury when extending
or retracting the running boards
The running boards extend at the side during
extension. During retraction, the running
boards are integrated in the side skirt. Parts of the body could become trapped. There maybe people in the range of movement. There is
a risk of injury.
Always ensure that there are no people
within the range of movement of the run-
ning boards.*NOTE Damage to the running boards dur-
ing extension or retraction
The running boards extend at the side during
extension. During retraction, the running
boards are integrated in the side skirt.
Make sure that there is suPcient space
during extension and retraction.*NOTE Damage to the vehicle body or
underbody due to low ground clearance
The running boards are attached to the vehicle
body via the underbody. This limits the ground
clearance.
Drive over obstacles, such as curbs, par-
ticularly carefully and slowly.
Observe the corresponding display messages in
the instrument cluster (  page 427).

Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. Exhaust
gases can enter the vehicle interior if the tail-

gate is open when the engine is running, espe-
cially if the vehicle is in motion.Always switch oM the engine before
opening the tailgate.Never drive with the tailgate open.*NOTE Damage to the tailgate caused by
obstacles above the vehicle
The tailgate swings rearwards and upwards
when it is opened.
Make sure that there is suPcient space
behind and above the tailgate.If the tailgate is unlocked, pull the tailgate han-
dle and release it again immediately.Vehicles with HANDS-FREE ACCESS: Make a
kicking movement with your foot below the
bumper (  page 83).Pull remote operating switch 1 until the tail-
gate opens.

Notes on closing the tailgate: your vehicle is
equipped with automatic key recognition. If a
SmartKey belonging to the vehicle is detected in
the vehicle, the tailgate will not be locked.
Note that the tailgate will not be locked in the fol- lowing situation:
= You have locked the vehicle and close the tail-
gate while a SmartKey belonging to the vehicleis inside the vehicle.
and
= A second SmartKey belonging to the vehicle is
not detected outside the vehicle.
Automatic SmartKey recognition is only an aid
and is not a substitute for your attentiveness.Before locking, ensure that at least one
SmartKey belonging to the vehicle is outside the vehicle.To close the tailgate: pull the tailgate down-
wards slightly. Release it as soon as it begins
to close.&WARNING Risk of becoming trapped dur-
ing automatic closing of the tailgate
Body parts may become trapped. There may
be people in the closing area.
Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity of the closing area during the closing
process.
Use one of the following options to stop the
closing process:
= Press the

Press closing button 1 on the tailgate.
Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO
Press locking button 2 on the tailgate.
If a SmartKey is detected outside the vehicle,
the tailgate will close and the vehicle will be

HANDS-FREE ACCESS function
With HANDS-FREE ACCESS, you can open, close
or stop the closing process of the tailgate by per- forming a kicking movement under the rearbumper.
The kicking movement triggers the opening or
closing process alternately.
Observe the notes when opening (  page 79)
and closing (  page 80) the tailgate.\bTwo warning tones sound when the tailgate is
opening or closing.&WARNING Risk of burns caused by a hot
exhaust system
The vehicle exhaust system can become very hot. If you use HANDS-FREE ACCESS, you
could burn yourself by touching the exhaust
system.
Always ensure that you only make a kick-
ing movement within the detection range
of the sensors.*NOTE Vehicle damage due to uninten-
tional opening of the tailgate
= When using an automatic car wash
= When using a high pressure cleaner
Deactivate the function of the SmartKey
in these situations.
or
Make sure that the SmartKey is at a min-
imum distance of 10 s (3 m) away from
the vehicle.
When making the kicking movement, make sure
that you are standing Nrmly on the ground. You
could otherwise lose your balance, e.g. on ice.
Observe the following notes: = The key is behind the vehicle.
= Stand at least 12 in (30 cm) away from the
vehicle while performing the kicking move-ment.
= Do not come into contact with the bumper
while making the kicking movement.
= Do not carry out the kicking movement too
slowly.
= The kicking movement must be towards the
vehicle and back again.

1Detection range of the sensors
If several consecutive kicking movements are not
successful, wait ten seconds.
System limits
The system may be impaired or may not function
in the following cases:
= The sensors are dirty, e.g. due to road salt or
snow.
= The kicking movement is made using a pros-
thetic leg.
The tailgate can open or close unintentionally in the following situations:
= A person\bs arms or legs are moving in the sen-
sor detection range, e.g. when polishing the
vehicle or picking up objects.
= Objects are moved or placed behind the vehi-
cle, e.g. the hose of a fuel dispenser, a charg-ing cable or luggage
= Clamping straps, tarp or other coverings are
pulled over the bumper.
= A protective mat with a length reaching over
the trunk sill down into the detection range of the sensors is used.
= The protective mat is not secured correctly.
= Work is being done on the trailer hitch, trailers
or rear bicycle racks.
Deactivate the function of the key (  page 72) or
do not carry the key about your person in such situations.Limiting the tailgate opening angle
Activating the opening angle limiter
You can limit the tailgate opening angle in the top
half of its opening range up to a point shortly
before the end position.
Stop the opening procedure of the tailgate at
the desired position.Press and hold the closing button on the tail-
gate until you hear a short acoustic signal.
The opening angle limiter will be activated. The tailgate will then stop in the stored position
when opened.
To open the tailgate fully, pull the handle on the outside of the tailgate again aser it has stopped
automatically.
Deactivating the opening angle limiter
Press and hold the closing button on the tail-
gate until two short acoustic signals sound.
Releasing the tailgate in an emergency
Requirements: = Only for Mercedes-Maybach vehicles.

Remove cover 1.Pull lever 2 in the direction of the arrow until
the tailgate unlocks.
Unlocking the tailgate with the emergency key
Requirements: = Not for Mercedes-Maybach vehicles.
= The rear seat backrest has been folded
forward.
= The cargo compartment cover has been
removed.Remove the emergency key (  page 73).Insert emergency key 2 into opening 1 in

Side windows
Opening and closing the side windows
&WARNING Risk of entrapment when open-
ing a side window
When opening a side window, parts of the
body could be drawn in or become trapped
between the side window and window frame.
When opening, make sure that nobody is
touching the side window.If someone is trapped, release the but- ton immediately or pull it in order to
close the side window again.&WARNING Risk of becoming trapped when
closing a side window
When closing a side window, body parts could
be trapped in the closing area in the process.
When closing, make sure that no body
parts are in the closing area.If someone is trapped, release the but- ton immediately or press the button in
order to reopen the side window.&WARNING Risk of becoming trapped when
children operate the side windows
Children could become trapped if they operate
the side windows, particularly when unatten- ded.
Activate the child safety lock for the rear
passenger compartment side windows.When leaving the vehicle, always take the SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle.Never leave children unattended in thevehicle.
Requirements: = The power supply or the vehicle has been
switched on.

button beyond the point of resistance or pull

When the vehicle is switched oM, you can con-
tinue to operate the side windows.
This function is available for around four minutes or until a front door is opened.\bVehicles with electric sunblinds on the les
and right rear doors: The buttons for the rear
side windows also open and close the roller
sunblinds (  page 94).
Automatic reversing function of the side windows
If an obstacle impedes a side window during the closing process, the side window will open again automatically. The automatic reversing function is
only an aid and is not a substitute for your atten- tiveness.
During the closing process, make sure that no
body parts are in the closing area.&WARNING Risk of becoming trapped
despite there being reversing protection
on the side window
The reversing function does not react:
= To sos, light and thin objects, e.g. Nngers.
=
During resetting.
The reversing function cannot prevent some-
one from becoming trapped in these situa- tions.During the closing process, make sure
that no body parts are in the closing
area.If someone becomes trapped, press the
b button to open the side window
again.
Convenience opening (ventilating the vehicle
before starting a journey)
&WARNING Risk of entrapment when open-
ing a side window
When opening a side window, parts of the
body could be drawn in or become trapped
between the side window and window frame.
When opening, make sure that nobody is
touching the side window.Release the button immediately if some-
body becomes trapped.
Requirements
= The SmartKey is in the immediate vicinity of
the vehicle.
Press and hold the Ü button on the Smart-
Key.
The following functions will be performed:
= The vehicle will be unlocked.
= The side windows will be opened.
= The sliding sunroof will be opened.
= The panoramic sliding roof will be opened.
= The seat ventilation of the driver\bs seat will
be switched on.\bIf the roller sunblind of the panoramic sliding
sunroof is closed, the roller sunblind will be
opened Nrst.\bIf the roller sunblinds of the rear doors are
closed, the roller sunblinds will be opened

To interrupt convenience opening: release the
Ü button.To continue convenience opening: press and
hold the Ü button again.
Convenience closing (closing the vehicle from out-
side)
&WARNING Risk of entrapment due to not
paying attention during convenience clos-
ing
When the convenience closing feature is oper-
ating, parts of the body could become trapped in the closing area of the side window and thesliding sunroof.
When the convenience closing feature isoperating, monitor the entire closing
process and make sure that no body
parts are in the closing area.
Requirements
= The SmartKey is in the immediate vicinity of
the vehicle.
Press and hold the ß button on the Smart-
Key.
The following functions will be performed:
= The vehicle will be locked.
= The side windows will be closed.
= The sliding sunroof will be closed.
= The panoramic sliding sunroof will be
closed.To interrupt convenience closing: release the
ß button.To continue convenience closing: press and
hold the ß button again.\bConvenience closing also functions with KEY-
LESS-GO (  page 75).Resolving problems with the side windows&WARNING Risk of becoming trapped or
fatally injured if reversing protection is not
activated
If you close a side window again immediately aser it has been blocked, the side window will
close with increased or maximum force. The
reversing function is then not active and body
parts may become trapped.
Make sure that no parts of the body are
in the closing area.To stop the closing process, release the
button or press the button again to
reopen the side window.
One of the side windows cannot be closed and
the cause is not obvious.
Check to see whether any objects are in the
window guide.Adjust the side windows.
