Lighting
Low-beam headlamps
The low-beam headlamps can be switched
on and off with the exterior lamp switch
using the manual headlamp mode.
Turn the exterior lamp switch to
positionB.
The following lamps switch on:
Low-beam headlamps
Tail and parking lamps
License plate lamps
Side marker lamps
Automatic headlamp mode
The following lamps switch on and off
automatically depending on the brightness
of the ambient light:
Low-beam headlamps
Tail and parking lamps
License plate lamps
Side marker lamps
Turn the exterior lamp switch to
position U.
With the SmartKey in starter switch
position1, the tail and parking lamps,
the license plate lamps, and the side
marker lamps will switch on and off
depending on the brightness of the
ambient light.
When the engine is running, the
low-beam headlamps, the tail and park-
ing lamps, the license plate lamps, and
the side marker lamps will switch on
and off depending on the brightness of
the ambient light.
Warning!
G
If the exterior lamp switch is set toU,
the headlamps will not be automatically
switched on under foggy conditions.
To minimize risk to you and to others,
activate headlamps by turning exterior lamp
switch toB when driving or when traffic
and/or ambient lighting conditions require
you to do so.
In low ambient lighting conditions, only
switch from positionU toB with the
vehicle at a standstill in a safe location.
Switching fromU toB will briefly
switch off the headlamps. Doing so while
driving in low ambient lighting conditions
may result in an accident.
The automatic headlamp feature is only an
aid to the driver. The driver is responsible for
the operation of the vehicle’s lights at all
times.

High-beam headlamps are only available with the
exterior lamp switch in positionB.

In Canada the daytime running lamp mode
is mandatory and therefore in a constant
mode.
In the USA the daytime running lamp mode
is deactivated by default. Activate the day-
time running lamp mode using the control
system, see “Setting daytime running lamp
mode (USA only)” (
page 135).
Turn the exterior lamp switch to
positionM orU.
When the engine is running, the
low-beam headlamps are switched on.
In low ambient light conditions, the
following lamps will switch on
additionally:
Tail and parking lamps
License plate lamps
Side marker lampsCanada only:
When the engine is running, and you shift
from a driving position to neutral
positionN or park positionP with the vehi-
cle at a standstill, the low-beam head-
lamps will switch off with a delay of 3
minutes.
When the engine is running, and you
turn the exterior lamp switch to
positionC, the low-beam head-
lamps, the tail and parking lamps, the
license plate and the side marker
lamps switch on.
turn the exterior lamp switch to
positionB, the manual headlamp
mode has priority over the daytime
running lamp mode. The corresponding
exterior lamps switch on (
page 106).
USA only:
When the engine is running, and you turn
the exterior lamp switch to positionC
orB, the manual headlamp mode has
priority over the daytime running lamp
mode. The corresponding exterior lamps
switch on (
page 106).

With the daytime running lamp mode activat-
ed and the engine running, the low-beam head-
lamps cannot be switched off manually.

With the exterior lamp switch in
positionM or U you cannot switch on the
high-beam headlamps.
The high-beam flasher is available at all times.
For nighttime driving you should turn the exterior
lamp switch to positionB to permit activa-
tion of the high-beam headlamps.

With the daytime running lamp mode
activated and the exterior lamp switch in
positionM, you cannot switch on the
high-beam headlamps.
The high-beam flasher is available at all times.
For nighttime driving you should turn the exterior
lamp switch to positionB or U to permit
activation of the high-beam headlamps.

Locator lighting and night security
illumination
The locator lighting and the night security
illumination are described in the “Control
system” section, see “Setting locator light-
ing” (
page 135) and “Setting night secu-
rity illumination” (

Turn the exterior lamp switch to posi-
tion C orB (
page 106).
Pull out the exterior lamp switch to first
stop.
The front fog lamps switch on.
The green indicator lamp‡ in the
exterior lamp switch comes on
(page 106).
Push in the exterior lamp switch.
The front fog lamps switch off.
The green indicator lamp‡ in the
exterior lamp switch goes out.

In low ambient lighting or foggy conditions,
only switch from positionU toB with
the vehicle at a standstill in a safe location.
Switching fromU toB will briefly
switch off the headlamps. Doing so while
driving in low ambient lighting conditions
may result in an accident.i
Fog lamps will operate with the parking
lamps and/or the low-beam headlamps on. Fog
lamps should only be used in conjunction with
low-beam headlamps. Consult your State or
Province Motor Vehicle Regulations regarding al-
lowable lamp operation.

Fog lamps cannot be switched on manually
with the exterior lamp switch in positionU.
For switching on the fog lamps, turn the exterior
lamp switch to positionB first.

The combination switch is located on the
left of the steering column.

Control system
Settings menu
In the
Settings
menu there are two
functions:
The function
To reset, press reset
button for 3 seconds
with which you
can reset most the settings to those
set at the factory.
A collection of submenus with which
you can make individual settings for
your vehicle.
The following settings and submenus are
available:Resetting to factory settings
You can reset the functions of most of the
submenus to the factory settings.
For safety, the
Light Circuit Headlamp
Mode
submenu in the
Lighting
menu can
be reset with the vehicle at standstill only.
Press button è or ÿ repeatedly
until you see the
Settings
menu in the
multifunction display.
Press the reset button in the instru-
ment cluster (
page 114) for approxi-
mately 3 seconds.
In the right multifunction display you
will see the request to press the reset
button again to confirm.
Press the reset button again.
The functions of most the submenus
will reset to factory settings.

The settings you have changed will not be re-
set unless you confirm the action by pressing the

With the locator lighting feature activated

switch on during darkness when the
vehicle is unlocked with the SmartKey:

Tail lamps
License plate lamps
Side marker lamps
Front fog lamps
The locator lighting switches off when the
driver’s door is opened.
If you do not open a door after unlocking
the vehicle with the SmartKey the lamps
will switch off automatically after approxi-
mately 40 seconds.

This function is not available in countries
where the daytime running lamp mode is manda-
tory and therefore in a constant mode.

For safety reasons, resetting the
Lighting
submenu to factory settings while driving
(
page 129) will not deactivate the daytime
running lamp mode.
You see the following message in the right multi-
function display:

With the delayed shut-off feature activated

positionU before the engine is turned
off, the following lamps will switch on
when the engine is turned off:
Parking lamps
Tail lamps
License plate lamps
Side marker lamps
Front fog lamps
If, after turning off the engine, you do not
open a door or do not close an opened
door, the lamps will automatically switch
off after 60 seconds.

Control system
You can temporarily deactivate the
headlamps delayed switch-off feature:
Before leaving the vehicle turn the
SmartKey in the starter switch to
position0.
Then turn it to position2 and back
to0.
The delayed switch-off feature is deac-
tivated. It will reactivate as soon as you
reinsert the SmartKey in the starter
switch.Setting interior lighting delayed
switch-off
Use this function to set whether you would
like the interior lighting to remain on for
10 seconds during darkness after you have
removed the SmartKey from the starter
switch.
Move the selection marker with button
