related wiring.
When the ignition switch is in the “ON\f or “STA\bT\f
position, the S\bS air bag warning light illuminates for
about 7 seconds and then turns off. This indicates that
the S\bS air bag systems are operational.
If any of the following conditions occur, the air bag
and/or pre-tensioner seat belt systems need servicing:
.The S\bS air bag warning light remains on after
approximately 7 seconds.
. The S\bS air bag warning light flashes intermit-
tently.
. The S\bS air bag warning light does not illuminate
at all.
Under these conditions, the air bag and/or pre-
tensioner seat belt systems may not operate properly.
They must be checked and repaired. Contact a

1-30Safety — seats, seat belts and supplemental restraint system
jectiles and cause injury if a supplemental
air bag inflates.
. Immediately after inflation, several supple-
mental air bag system components will be
hot. Do not touch them: you may severely
burn yourself.
. No unauthorized changes should be made
to any components or wiring of the supple-
mental air bag systems. This is to prevent
accidental inflation of the supplemental air
bags or damage to the supplemental air bag
systems.
. Do not make unauthorized changes to your
vehicle’s electrical system, suspension sys-
tem or front end structure. This could affect
proper operation of the supplemental air
bag systems.
. Tampering with the supplemental air bag
systems may result in serious personal
injury. Tampering includes changes to the
steering wheel by placing materials over the
steering wheel pad and above, and by
installing additional trim materials around
the supplemental air bag systems.
. Work around and on the supplemental air
bag systems should be done by a RENAULT
dealer. The SRS wiring should not be
modified or disconnected. Unauthorized
electrical test equipment and probing de-
vices should not be used on the supple-
mental air bag systems.
. The SRS wiring harness connectors are
yellow and/or orange for easy identification.
When the air bags inflate, a fairl\f loud noise \ba\f be
heard, followed b\f the release of s\boke. This s\boke is
not har\bful and does not indicate a fire. Care should be taken not to inhale it, as it \ba\f cause irritation and
choking. Those with a histor\f of a breathing condition
should get fresh air pro\bptl\f.
Supple\bental front-i\bpact air bag s\fste\b
The driver’s supple\bental front-i\bpact air bag is
located at the center of the steering wheel. The
passenger’s supple\bental front-i\bpact air bag (if
equipped) is located at the instru\bent panel above
the glove box.
The supple\bental front-i\bpact air bag s\fste\b is
designed to inflate in higher severit\f frontal collisions,
although it \ba\f inflate if the forces in another t\fpe of
collision are si\bilar to those of a higher severit\f frontal
i\bpact. It \ba\f not inflate in certain frontal collisions.
Vehicle da\bage (or lack of it) is not alwa\fs an
indication of proper supple\bental front-i\bpact air
bag s\fste\b operation.
Front passenger air bag status light (if
equipped):
SSS0909
The front passenger air bag status light is located on
the \beter.
When the ignition switch is placed in the “ON”
position, the front passenger air bag status light
illu\binates for about 7 seconds and then turns off or
re\bains on depending on the front passenger air bag
status.
.
When the ignition switch is placed in the “ON”
position and the front passenger air bag is active,
the front passenger air bag status light will turn off
after approxi\batel\f 7 seconds.
. When the front passenger air bag is turned off
with the front passenger air bag switch, the front
passenger air bag status light will illu\binate and
re\bain on as long as the front passenger air bag
switch is in the “OFF” position.
If the front passenger air bag status light operates in a
wa\f other than described above, the front passenger
air bag \ba\f not function properl\f. Have the s\fste\b
checked, and if necessar\f repaired b\f a RENAULT
dealer pro\bptl\f.
Front passenger air bag switch (if equipped):
SSS1031
The front passenger air bag can be turned off with the
front passenger air bag switch*Alocated inside of
the glove box.
To turn off the front passenger air bag:
1. Place the ignition switch in the “OFF” position.

2. Open the glove box and insert the \fey into thefront passenger air bag swit\bh. For Intelligent Key
equipped models, see “Keys” (P.3-2) for me\bhan-
i\bal \fey usage.
3. Push and turn the \fey to the “OFF” position.
4. Pla\be the ignition swit\bh in the “ON” position. The front passenger air bag status light will illuminate
and remain on.
To turn on the front passenger air bag:
1. Pla\be the ignition swit\bh in the “OFF” position.
2. Open the glove box and insert the \fey into the front passenger air bag swit\bh.
3. Push and turn the \fey to the “ON” position.
4. Pla\be the ignition swit\bh in the “ON” position. The front passenger air bag status light will illuminate
then turn off.
Supplemental side-impa\bt air bag system (if
equipped)
SSS0978
The supplemental side-impa\bt air bag is lo\bated at the
outside of the front seats’ seatba\b\fs.
The supplemental side-impa\bt air bag system is
designed to inflate in higher severity side \bollisions, although it may inflate if the for\bes in another type of
\bollision are similar to those of a higher severity side
impa\bt. It may not inflate in \bertain side \bollisions.
Vehi\ble damage (or la\b\f of it) is not always an
indi\bation of proper supplemental side-impa\bt air bag
system operation.
Supplemental \burtain side-impa\bt air bag
system (if equipped)
The supplemental \burtain side-impa\bt air bag is
lo\bated at the roof rails.
The supplemental \burtain side-impa\bt air bag system is
designed to inflate in higher severity side \bollisions,
although it may inflate if the for\bes in another type of
\bollision are similar to those of a higher severity side
impa\bt. It may not inflate in \bertain side \bollisions.
Vehi\ble damage (or la\b\f of it) is not always an
indi\bation of proper supplemental \burtain side-impa\bt
air bag system operation.
PRE-TENSIONER SEAT BELT SYSTEM (if
equipped)
WARNING:
.
The pre-tensioner seat belt cannot be re-
used after activation. It must be replaced
together with the retractor and buckle as a
unit.
. If the vehicle becomes involved in a collision
but the pre-tensioner is not activated, be
sure to have the pre-tensioner system
checked and, if necessary, replaced by a
RENAULT dealer.
. No unauthorized changes should be made
to any components or wiring of the pre-
tensioner seat belt system. This is to prevent
accidental activation of the pre-tensioner seat belt or damage to the pre-tensioner
seat belt system.
. Work around or on the pre-tensioner seat
belt system should be done by a RENAULT
dealer. The SRS wiring should not be
modified or disconnected. Unauthorized
electrical test equipment and probing de-
vices should not be used on the pre-
tensioner seat belt system.
. If you need to dispose of the pre-tensioner
seat belt system, or scrap the vehicle,
contact a RENAULT dealer. Correct pre-
tensioner disposal procedures are set forth
in the appropriate RENAULT Service Manual.
Incorrect disposal procedures could cause
personal injury.
The pre-tensioner seat belt system may a\btivate with
the supplemental air bag system in \bertain types of
\bollisions.
Wor\fing with the seat belt retra\btor, it helps tighten the
seat belt when the vehi\ble be\bomes involved in \bertain
types of \bollisions, helping to restrain front seat
o\b\bupants.
The pre-tensioner is en\based with the front seat belt’s
retra\btor and an\bhor. These seat belts are used the
same as \bonventional seat belts.
When the pre-tensioner seat belt a\btivates, a fairly loud
noise may be heard, followed by the release of smo\fe.
This smo\fe is not harmful and does not indi\bate a fire.
Care should be ta\fen not to inhale it, as it may \bause
irritation and \bho\fing. Those with a history of a
breathing \bondition should get fresh air promptly.
