Power (ignition) switch
Check that the charging cable is disconnected. (ï‚®P. 1 5 5 )
Check that the parking brake is set.
Firmly depress the brake pedal.
and a message will be dis-
played on the multi-information dis-
play.
When the shift position is N, the
hybrid system cannot start. Shift
the shift position to P when starting
the hybrid system. (ï‚®P. 330)
Press the power switch shortly
and firmly.
When operating the power switch,
one short, firm press is enough. It
is not necessary to press and hold
the switch.
If the “READY” indicator turns on,
the hybrid system will operate nor-
mally.
Continue depressing the brake pedal until the “READY” indicator is illumi-
nated.
The hybrid system can be started from any power switch mode.
Check that the “READY” indicator is illuminated.
If the “READY” indicator changes from a flashing light to a solid light and
the buzzer sounds, the hybrid system is starting normally.
The vehicle will not move when the “READY” indicator is off.
The vehicle can move when the “READY” indicator is on even if the engine
is stopped. (The gasoline engine starts or stops automatically in accor-
dance with the state of the vehicle.)
Performing the following operations when carrying the elec-
tronic key on your person starts the hybrid system or changes
power switch modes.

Driving
Modes can be changed by pressing the power switch with the brake
pedal released. (The mode changes each time the switch is pressed.)
Off
The emergency flashers can be
used.
ACCESSORY mode
Some electrical components such
as the audio system can be used.
“Accessory” is displayed on the
main display.
ON mode
All electrical components can be
used.
“Ignition ON” is displayed on the
main display.
QAuto power off function
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY mode for more than 20 minutes or ON
mode (the hybrid system is not operating) for more than an hour with the shift
position in P, the power switch will automatically turn off. However, this func-
tion cannot entirely prevent the 12-volt battery discharge. Do not leave the
vehicle with the power switch in ACCESSORY or ON mode for long periods
of time when the hybrid system is not operating.

QWhen the ambient temperature is low, such as during winter driving con-
ditions
OWhen starting the hybrid system, the flashing time of the “READY” indicator
may be long. Leave the vehicle as it is until the “READY” indicator is steady
on, as steady means the vehicle is able to move.
OWhen the hybrid battery (traction battery) is extremely cold (below approxi-
mately -30ï‚°C [-22ï‚°F]) under the influence of the outside temperature, it may
not be possible to start the hybrid system. In this case, try to start the hybrid
system again after the temperature of the hybrid battery increases due to
the outside temperature increase etc.

NOTICE
QTo prevent 12-volt battery discharge
O Do not leave the power switch in ACCESSORY or ON mode for long peri-
ods of time without the hybrid system on.
O If “Accessory”, “Ignition ON” or mileage display (ï‚®P. 214) is displayed on
the main display while the hybrid system is not operating, the power switch
is not off. Exit the vehicle after turning the power switch off .
Q When starting the hybrid system
If the hybrid system becomes difficult to start, have your vehi cle checked by
any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, o r any reliable
repairer immediately.
Q Symptoms indicating a malfunction with the power switch

3525-4. Refueling
Prius Plug-in Hybrid_OM_OM47E75E_(EE)
WARNING
QWhen refueling the vehicle
Observe the following precautions while refueling the vehicle. Failure to do
so may result in death or serious injury.
O After exiting the vehicle and before opening the fuel door, touch an
unpainted metal surface to discharge any static electricity. It is important to
discharge static electricity before refueling because sparks re sulting from
static electricity can cause fuel vapors to ignite while refuel ing.
O Always hold the grips on the fuel tank cap and turn it slowly to remove it.
A whooshing sound may be heard when the fuel tank cap is loosen ed.
Wait until the sound cannot be heard before fully removing the cap. In hot
weather, pressurized fuel may spray out of the filler neck and cause injury.
O Do not allow anyone that has not discharged static electricity from their
body to come close to an open fuel tank.
O Do not inhale vaporized fuel.
Fuel contains substances that are harmful if inhaled.
O Do not smoke while refueling the vehicle.
Doing so may cause the fuel to ignite and cause a fire.
O Do not return to the vehicle or touch any person or object that is statically
charged.
This may cause static electricity to build up, resulting in a p ossible ignition
hazard.
Q When refueling
Observe the following precautions to prevent fuel overflowing f rom the fuel
tank:
O Securely insert the fuel nozzle into the fuel filler neck.
O Stop filling the tank after the fuel nozzle automatically clicks off.
O Do not top off the fuel tank.
NOTICE
QRefueling
Do not spill fuel during refueling.
Doing so may damage the vehicle, such as causing the emission c ontrol
system to operate abnormally or damaging fuel system components or the
vehicle’s painted surface.

WARNING
The engine compartment contains many mechanisms and fluids that may
move suddenly, become hot, or become electrically energized. To avoid death
or serious injury, observe the following precautions.
Q When working on the engine compartment
O Make sure that the “Accessory”, “Ignition ON” or mileage display (ï‚®P. 2 1 3 )
on the main display and the “READY” indicator are both off.
O Keep hands, clothing and tools away from the moving fan.
O Be careful not to touch the engine, power control unit, radiator, exhaust
manifold, etc. right after driving as they may be hot. Oil and other fluids
may also be hot.
O Do not leave anything that may burn easily, such as paper and rags, in the
engine compartment.
O Do not smoke, cause sparks or expose an open flame to fuel. Fuel fumes
are flammable.
O Be extremely cautious when working on the 12-volt battery. It contains poi-
sonous and corrosive sulfuric acid.
O Take care because brake fluid can harm your hands or eyes and damage
painted surfaces. If fluid gets on your hands or in your eyes, flush the
affected area with clean water immediately. If you still experi ence discom-
fort, consult a doctor.
Q When working near the electric cooling fans or radiator grille
Be sure the power switch is off.
With the power switch in ON mode, the electric cooling fans may automati-
cally start to run if the air conditioning is on and/or the coo lant temperature
is high. ( ï‚®P. 593)
Q Safety glasses
Wear safety glasses to prevent flying or falling material, flui d spray, etc.
from getting in your eyes.

7068-2. Steps to take in an emergency
Prius Plug-in Hybrid_OM_OM47E75E_(EE)
After stopping the hybrid system and waiting for 5 minutes or
more, start the hybrid system again and check if “Hybrid System
Overheated” is shown on the multi-information display.
If the message does not disappear:
Stop the hybrid system and contact any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repaire r.
If the message is not displayed:
The hybrid system temperature has dropped and the vehicle may
be driven normally.
However, if the message appears again frequently, contact any a utho-
rized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any rel iable
repairer.
WARNING
Q To prevent an accident or injury when inspecting under the hood of
your vehicle
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in serious injury such as burns.
O If steam is seen coming from under the hood, do not open the hood until
the steam has subsided. The engine compartment may be very hot.
O After the hybrid system has been turned off, check that the “Accessory”,
“Ignition ON” or mileage display ( ï‚®P. 213) on the main display and the
“READY” indicator are off.
When the hybrid system is operating, the gasoline engine may au tomati-
cally start, or the cooling fans may suddenly operate even if t he gasoline
engine stops. Do not touch or approach rotating parts such as t he fan,
which may lead to fingers or clothing (especially a tie, a scar f or a muffler)
getting caught, resulting in serious injury.
O Do not loosen the coolant reservoir caps while the hybrid system and radi-
ator are hot.
High temperature steam or coolant could spray out.
