A WARNING
- The power front seats can also be adjusted
when the ignition is switched off. To reduce
the risk of injury, children should never be left unattended in the vehicle for this rea­
son .
- To reduce the risk of an accident, only adjust
the driver 's seat when the vehicle is station­
ary .
- Exercise caution when adjusting the seat
height. Unsupervised or careless seat ad ­
justment can pinch fingers or hands, which increases the risk of injury.
- The front seat backrests must not be re­
clined too far back when driving, because
this impairs the effectiveness of the safety
be lts and airbag system, which increases
the risk of injury.

You can adjust the massage function, lumbar
support and side bolsters using the multifunc­ tion button.

If passengers are s itting in the outer rear seats,
adjust the head restraints so that the upper edge
of the head restraint is as level as possible with
the upper part of their head . If that is not possi­
ble, try to adjust as close to this position as pos­
sible . If your vehicle has a middle seat, adjust
that head restra int all the way up

Installing the head re straints
• Slide the posts on the head restraint down into
the guides until the posts click into place .
• Press the button -arrow-c::> fig. 77 and slide the
head restraint all the way down . You should not
be able to remove the head restraint from the
backrest without pressing the button.
A WARNING
-Always read and follow the applicable warn­
ings~ page 261, Proper adjustment of
head restraints.
-Only remove the head restraints from the
rear seats when it is necessary for installing
a child safety seat

ty. Install the head restraint again immedi­
ately once the ch ild safety seat is removed.
Driving w ith the head restra ints removed or
not in the upright position increases the risk
of serious injury .
Memory function
Description
Applies to: vehicles wit h memo ry funct ion
Using the memory function, you can quick ly and
easily store a persona l seat profile for t he driver
and recall the sett ings later. The memory func­
tion is controlled by the remote control key and
the memory buttons in the driver's door.
The driver's seat prof ile is stored again and as­
s igned to the remote control key each time the
vehicle is locked . When you open the door, the
seat profile is automatically recalled . If two peo­
ple use the vehicle, it is recommended that each
person always uses their
"own" remote control
key.
Two seat profiles can be stored each using the
memory buttons. Once they are stored, these
seat profiles can be selected at any time.

The driver's seat profile can be assigned to the
remote control key when the vehicle is locked .

If you do not wish to have the seat profile for
another driver assigned to the remote control

The 12-volt sockets can be used for electr ical ac­
cessories . The power usage must not exceed
120 watts.
T here is an additiona l 12 volt socket* located on
the side tr im panel in the luggage compartment.
A WARNING
The sockets and the e lectrical accessories con­
nected to them only function when the igni­
tion is switched on. Incorrect usage can lead

Proper seating positions for passengers in
rear seats
Rear seat passengers must sit upright with both
feet on the floor consistent with their physical
size and be properly restrained whenever the ve­
hicle is in use.
To reduce the r isk of injury caused by an incorrect
seating position in the event of a sudden b raking
maneuver or an accident, your passengers on the
rear bench seat must a lways obse rve the follow ­
ing:
• Applies to: adjustable head restraints: If there
are passengers on the outer rear seats, adjust
the head restraints so the upper edge is as even
as possible with the top of your head . If that is
not possible, try to adjust the head restraint so
that it is as close to this position as possible. If
there is a passenger in the center rear seat,
slide the head restraint upward

• Make sure that the seatback is sec urely latched
in the upright position

• Keep both feet flat in the footwell in front of
the rear seat .
• Fasten and wear safety be lts properly

• Make sure that children are always properly re­

for their size and

Passengers who are improperly seated on the
rea r seat can be ser iously injured in a crash.
- Each passenger must always sit on a seat of
their ow n and properly fasten and wear the
safety belt be long ing to that seat.
- Safety belts only offer maximum p rotection
when the seatback is securely latched in the
upr ight position and the safety be lts a re
prope rly positioned on the body. By not sit­
t ing upright, a re ar sea t passenger increases
the risk of personal inj ury from improperly
posit ioned safety be lts !
- Always adjust the head rest raint properly so
that it ca n give max imum protection.

Proper adjustment of head restraints
Correctly adjusted head restraints are an impor­
tant part of your vehicle's occupant restraint sys­
tem and can help to reduce the risk of injuries in
accident situations.

The head rest raints must be correctly adjusted to
achieve the best protection.
• Applies to: adjustable head restraints: Adjust
the head restraints so the upper edge is as even
as possible with the top of your head .
If that is
not possib le, try to adjust the head restraint so
that it is as close to this pos ition as poss ible.
Position* the head restra int as close as possible
to the back of your head .
• If the re is a passenger in the center rear seat,
slide the head restra int upward.

seat is equipped with a convertible locking retrac­
tor that

-Safety belts offer optimum protection only
when the seatback is upright and belts are
properly pos itioned on the body.
-Always make sure that the rear seat back­ rest to wh ich the center rear safety belt is
attached is secure ly latched whenever the
rea r center safety belt is being used.
If the
backrest is not securely latched, the passen­
ger will move forward with the backrest dur ­
ing sudden braking, in a sudden maneuver
and especially in a crash.
-Never attach the safety belt to the buckle
for another seat. Attaching the belt to the
wrong buck le wi ll reduce safety belt effec­
t iveness and can cause serious personal in­
jury.
- A passenger who is not properly restrained
can be seriously injured by the safety belt it­
self when it moves from the stronger parts
of the body into critical areas like the abdo­
men.
- Always lock the convertible locking retractor
when you are secur ing a child safety seat in
the vehicle

mum protection from safety belts.

-The shou lder belt should l ie as close to the
center of the collar bone as possib le and
should fit well on the body . Ho ld the belt
above the latch tongue and pull it evenly
across the chest so that it sits as low as pos­
sible on the pelvis and there is no pressure
on the abdomen. The belt should always fit
snugly

- The lap belt portion of the safety belt must
be positioned as low as possible across pel­
vis and neve r over the abdomen. Make s ure

-A loose-fitting safety belt can cause serious
inj uries by shifting its position on your body
from the stro ng bones to mo re vulnerable,

With the front seats, the height adjustment
of the seat can also be used to adjust the po­
sition of the safety belts.
Improperly worn safety belts
Incorrectly posi tioned safety belts can cause se­
vere injuries.
Wearing safety belts improperly can cause seri­
ous injury or death. Safety belts can only work
when they are correctly positioned on the body.
Improper seating positions reduce the effect ive­
ness of safety belts and will even increase the
risk of injury and death by mov ing the safety belt
to crit ica l areas of the body. Imp roper seating
positions also increase the risk of serio us inj ury
and death when an airbag deploys and str ikes an
oc cupant who is not in the correct seating posi ­
tion . A driver is respons ible for the safety of a ll
vehicle occupants and especia lly for children.
Therefore:

Belt tensioners
How safety belt pretensioners work
Re ver sible safety belt pr etension ers
The following fu nctions a re available when safety
belts w ith reversib le safety belt tensioners are
fastened:
- In certain driving situations, the safety belts may tighten w it h a reversible tensioning func­
tion
¢ page 125.
- The safety belts may also tighten with this re-
versible tens ion ing funct ion in m ino r collisions .
Pyr otechnic s afety belt p reten sioners
Seat belts with pyrotechnic safety be lt preten­
s ioners are tensioned automatically in severe col­
lis ions, depending on the circumstances . This
helps to reduce the forward motion of the occu­
pants .
A WARNING
-It is poss ible for the pretensioners to dep loy
incor rec tly.
- Any wo rk on the tens ioner system or remov­
al and installation of system components
for o ther repairs m ust be performed by a
qualified workshop.
- The pyro technic system can only provide
protection for one collision. If the pyrotech­
n ic pretens ioners deploy, the pretensioning
system must be replaced .
(D Tips
-A fine dus t is re leased when the pyro technic
safety belt pretensioners dep loy. This is nor­
ma l and is not caused by a fire in the veh i­
cle .
- The relevant safety requirements must be
observed when the vehicle or components
of the system are scrapped. A qualified

Important information
Importance of wearing safety belts and
sitting properly
Airbags are only supplemental restraints. For
airbags to do their job, occupants must always
properly wear their safety belts and be in a prop­
er seating position.
For your safety and the safety of your passen­
gers, before driving off, always :
.,. Adjust the driver's seat and steering wheel

In a collision, airbags must inflate within the
blink of an eye and with considerable force. The
supplemental airbags can cause injuries if the
driver or the front seat passenger is not seated
properly. Therefore in order to help the airbag to
do its job, it is important, both as a driver and as
a passenger to sit properly at all times.
By keeping room between your body and the
steering wheel and the front of the passenger
compartment, the airbag can inflate fully and
completely and provide supplemental protection in certain frontal collisions
¢ page 259, Correct
passenger seating positions .
For details on the

It 's especially important that children are proper­
ly
restrained ¢ page 302.
There is a lot that the driver and the passengers
can and must do to help the individual safety fea­
tures installed in your Audi work together as a
system.
Proper seating position is important so that the
front airbag on the driver side can do its job. If
you have a physical impairment or condition that prevents you from sitting properly on the driver
seat with the safety belt properly fastened and

reaching the pedals, or if you have concerns with
regard to the function or operation of the Ad­
vanced Airbag System, please contact your au­
thori zed Audi dealer or qualified workshop, or
call Audi Customer Relations at 1-800-822-2834
for possible modifications to your vehicle.
When the airbag system deploys, a gas generator
will fill the airbags, break open the padded cov­ ers, and inflate between the steering wheel and
the driver and between the instrument panel and
the front passenger. The airbags will deflate im­
mediately after deployment so that the front oc­
cupants can see through the windshield again
without interruption.
All of this takes place in the blink of an eye, so
fast that many people don't even realize that the airbags have deployed. The airbags also inflate
with a great deal of force and nothing should be
in their way when they deploy. Front airbags in
combination with properly worn safety belts slow
down and limit the occupant's forward move­
ment . Together they help to prevent the driver
and front seat passenger from hitting parts of
the inside of the vehicle while reducing the forces
acting on the occupant during the crash . In this
way they help to reduce the risk of injury to the
head and upper body in the crash. Airbags do not
protect the arms or the lower parts of the body.
Both front airbags will not inflate in all frontal
collisions . The triggering of the airbag system de­
pends on the vehicle deceleration rate caused by
the collision and registered by the electronic con­
trol unit . If this rate is below the reference value
programmed into the control unit, the airbags
will not be triggered, even though the car may be badly damaged as a result of the collision. Vehi­
cle damage, repair costs or even the lack of vehi­
cle damage is not necessarily an indication of
whether an airbag should inflate or not.
Since the circumstances will vary considerably between one collision and another, it is not possi­
ble to define a range of vehicle speeds that will
cover every possible kind and angle of impact
that will always trigger the airbags . Important
factors include, for example, the nature (hard or
soft) of the object which the car hits, the angle of
impact, vehicle speed , etc. The front airbags will

Child ren on the front seat of any car even w ith
Advanced Airbags can be seriously injured or
even killed when an airbag inflates. A child in
a rearward-facing child safety seat installed
on the front passenger seat will be seriously
injured and can be killed if the front airbag in­
flates.
- The inflating airbag will hit the child safety
seat or infant carrier with great force and
will smash the ch ild safety seat and child
against the backrest, center armrest, or
door.
- Always install rear-facing child safety seats
on the rear seat.
- If you must install a rearward fac ing ch ild
safety seat on the front passenger seat in
exceptiona l circumstances and the

on and stay on, immediately install the rear­
facing child safety seat in a rear seating po­ sition and have the airbag system inspected
immediately by your Audi dealer.
A WARNING
- Forward-facing chi ld seats installed on the
front passenger seat may interfere with the deployment of the a irbag and cause serious
personal injury to the child.
- If except ional circumstances require the use
of a forward-facing child restraint on the
front passenger's seat, the child's safety and well-being require the following special
precautions to be taken:
- Always make sure that the fo rward-facing
seat has been designed and certified by its manufacturer for use on a front passenger
seat with a front and s ide a irbag.
- Always carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions provided with the child seat
or infant carrier.
- Never install a chi ld restraint without a
properly attached top tether strap if the
child restraint manufacturer's instructions require the top tether strap to be used.
Ch ild safety
-Never put the forward-facing child re­
straint up against or very near the instru­
ment panel.
- Applies to: vehicles with safety be lt height
adjustment: Always set the safety belt up­
per anchorage to the adjustment pos ition
that permits proper installation in accord­
ance with the child restraint manufactur­
er's instructions.
- Always move the front passenger seat to the h ighest position in the up and down
adjustment range and move it back to the
rearmos t position in the seat's fore and
a ft ad justment range, as far away from
the a irbag as poss ible, before installing
the forward-facing child restraint .
- Always make sure that the safety belt up­
per anchorage is behind the chi ld restraint
and not next to or in front of the child re­
straint so that the safety belt will be prop­
erly pos it ioned.
- Always make sure that nothing prevents
the front passenger's seat from being
moved to the rearmost position in its fore
and aft adjustment range.
- Never place objects on the seat (such as a
laptop, CO player, electronic games de­
vice, power inverter or seat heater fo r
ch ild seats) . These may influence the elec­
trical capacitance measu red by the capac i­
tive passenger detec tion system and can
also fly around in an acc iden t and c ause
serious personal injury .
- Never place or use any ele ct rical devi ce
(such as a laptop, CO player, electroni c
games device, powe r inverter or seat heat ­
er for child seats) on the front passenger
seat if the device is connected to the
12-
vo lt socket or the cigarette lighter socket.
- If a seat heater has been retrofitted or
otherw ise added to the front passenger
seat, never insta ll any child restraint sys­
tem on this seat.
- Make su re that there are no wet objects
(such as a wet towe l) and no water or oth­
er liquids on the front passenger seat
cush ion.

against the backrest, center armrest, door
o r roof.
- Always install rear-facing child safety seats
o r infant carriers on the rear seat.
- Make sure there is enough space in front of
the ch ild in the child seat. If necessary, ad­
just the ang le and posit ion of the seat in
front of the child sea t.
- Forward-fac ing ch ild safety seats installed
on the front passenger's seat can inte rfe re
with the airbag when it inflates and cause
serious injury to the child . Always insta ll for­
ward-facing child safety seats on
the rear
seat.
- If exceptional circumstances require the use
of a forward-facing child restraint on the
front passenger's seat, the child's safety and well-being require that the following
special precautions be taken:
- Make sure the forward-fa cing seat h as
been designed and certif ied by its manu­
facturer for use on a front seat with a pas­
senger front and side airbag.
- Always care fully follow the manufacturer's
instr uctions provided with the child safety
seat or carrier.
- Always move the front passenger seat to the highest position in the up and down
ad justment range and move it back to the
rearmost posit ion in the seat's fore and
aft adjustment range, as far away from
the airbag as possible, before installing
the forward-fac ing ch ild restraint.
- Always make sure that the safety be lt up­
per anchorage is behind the child restra int
and not next to or in front of the child

the front passenger's seat from being moved to the rearmost position in its fore

games device, power inverter or seat heat­
er for child seats) on the front passenger
seat if the device is connected to the

vo lt socket or the cigarette lighter soc ket.
- If a seat heater has been retrofitted or othe rw ise added to t he fron t passenger
seat, neve r insta ll any child rest raint sys­
tem on this seat.
- Make su re that there a re no wet objects
(such as a wet towe l) and no water or oth­
er liquids on the front passenger sea t
cush ion .
- Neve r place objects o n the sea t (such as a
laptop, CD player, e lect ronic games de ­
vice, power inverter or seat heater for
child seats). These may inf luence the elec­
trical capacitance meas ured by t he capaci­
tive passenger detection system and can also fly around in an acc ident and cause
serious personal injury.
- Always buckle the child safety seat firmly in
p lace even if a ch ild is not sitt ing in it. A
loose child safety seat can fly around dur ing
