ICmJ REAR I Switching rear window heater
on /off
The rear w indow heater only operates when
the engine is running . It switches off auto­
matica lly after a few minutes, depending on
the outside temperature.
To prevent the rear w indow heater from
switch ing off automatically, press and hold
the ~ button for more than 2 seconds. This
remains stored unti l the ignition is switched
off.
~ Ad justing s eat h eat ing
Press ing the button switches the seat heat ing
on at the highest setting ( leve l 3) . T he LEDs
indicate the temperature leve l. To reduce the
temperature, press the button again. To
switch the seat heating off, press the button
repeatedly unt il the LED turns off.
After 10 minutes, the seat heating automati ­
cally switches from leve l 3 to level 2.
The seat heating for both outer rear seats* is
ad justed using the buttons in the center con­
sole.
Air vents
You can open or close the center and outer
vents in the cockpit and the vents in the rear center console using the ridged thumbwhee ls.
The levers adj ust the direction of the airflow
from the vents.
T he air temperature in the rear can be ad just­
ed so that it is warmer or co lder by turning
the knob to the red or blue area.
A WARNING
- Do not use th is sett ing for extended peri­
ods of time. The w indows could fog up
since no fresh air can enter the vehicle. If
the wi ndows fog up, press the air rec ircu­
lation button again immed iate ly to
sw itch off the air recircu lation function
or select defrost.
- I ndividuals w ith reduced sensitivity to
pa in or temperature cou ld deve lop burns
when using the seat heating fu nction. To
red uce the risk of injury, these indiv idu­
a ls shou ld not use seat heating.

To avoid damage to the heat ing elements
i n the seats, do not kneel o n the sea ts or
place heavy loads on a sma ll area of the
seat.

Operation

We recommend pressing the IAUTOI button and setting the temperature to 72 °F (22 °C).

Press the buttons to turn the functions on or
off. Use the dials to adjust the temperature,
the blower speed and the air distribution. The
LED in a button will light up when the func­
tion is switched on. The settings are shown in
the climate control display and are also shown in the MMI display for a few seconds . The driv­
er and front passenger settings can be adjust·
ing separately.

IOFFl Switching the climate control
system on/off
The IOFFI button switches the climate control
system on or off .
It also switches on when you
turn the dial or press any button. Airf low from outside is blocked when the
climate control
system is switched off.
You can activate the residual heat funct ion
when the ignition is off by pressing and hold­
ing the ~ button. The residual heat from the
coolant is used to heat the vehicle interior.
The residua l heat function switches off auto­
matically after about 30 minutes.
IACI Switching cooling mode on /off
T he air is not coo led and humidity is not re­
moved when cooling mode is switched off.
This can cause fog on the windows. Cooling
mode switches off automatically when the
outside temperature is below zero.
1-1 Switching recirculation mode on/off
In recircu lation mode, the air inside the vehi ­
cle is circ ulated and filtered. This prevents the
unfiltered air outside the vehicle from enter­
ing the vehicle interior. We recommend
switching recirculation mode on when driving
through a tunnel or when sitting in traffic

The !AUTO ! button or~ button switches recir-

IAUTO I Switching automatic mode on
Automatic mode m ainta ins a constant tem­
perat ure inside the vehi cle. Air tempera ture,
airflow and air d istribution a re controlled a u­
tomatically.
Adjusting the temperature
T empe ratu res between 60 °F (+16 °C) and
84 °F ( +28 ° C) c an be se t. O uts ide of this
range,
lo or hi w ill appear in the climate con ­
trol system disp lay. At both of these settings,
the cl imate control system r uns continuously
at max imum cooling or heat ing power. There
is no temperature regu lation.
~ Adjusting the airflow
You can a djust the airf low manually to s uit
your needs . To have the airf low reg ulated a u­
tomatically, press the
! AUTO ! button.
~ Adjusting the air distribution
You can manu ally se lect the ve nts w here the
a ir will flow. To have the air d istribu tion reg u­
l ated automatically, press the
IAUTOI bu tton.
~ I~ * Adjusting seat heating/
ventilat ion*
Pr ess ing the button swi tches the sea t heat­
ing/ventilation on at the highest sett ing ( leve l
3). The LEDs indicate the heating/venti lat ion
leve l. To reduce the heating/vent ilation, press
the butto n aga in. To switch the seat heat ing/
ve nti lation off, press the button repeatedly
u ntil the LED turns off.
After 10 minutes, the seat heating automati­
cally switches from leve l 3 to level 2.

ISYNC I Synchronization*
When synchronization is switched on, the
same settings are applied to bot h the dr iver
and fr ont passenger, except for the seat heat­
i ng/venti lation *. The rear zo ne is also
synchronized. Synchronization switches off
whe n the se ttings for the front passenge r side
o r r ear are ad justed.
You can also switch synchronizati on o n by
pressing and holding a dial. For example, if
you press and hold t he di al on the front pas­
senger si de, the setti ngs for that s ide a re
t ran sfer red to t he d rive r si de. The same ap ­
plies to the re ar.
Air vents
You can open o r close the center and ou ter
vents i n the cockpit and the vents in the rear
c ente r console and doo r pillars us ing t he
ridged t humbwheels. The levers adjust the d i­
r ect ion o f the airfl ow from the vents.
A WARNING

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

Your veh icle is equipped with an electrome ­
chan ical parking brake . The parking brake is
designed to prevent the vehicle from rolling unintent ionally and replaces the hand brake.
In addition to the normal functions of a tradi­
tional hand brake, the electromechan ical
parking brake provides various convenience
and safety functions.
When starting from rest
-The integral starting assist helps you when
dr iv ing by automatically releasing the park ­
ing brake

- When sta rting on inclines, the starting as­
s ist prevents the vehicle from unintentional­
ly rolling back . The brak ing force of the
parking brake is not released until sufficient
dr iv ing force has been built up at the
wheels .
Emergency brake function

can be slowed down even if the
normal brakes

time - even with the ign ition sw itched
off . The ignition must be on in order to
release the parking brake.
- Occasional noises when the parking
brake is applied and released are normal
and are not a cause for concern .
- When the vehicle is parked, the parking
brake goes through a self-test cycle at
regu lar intervals. Any associated noises
are normal.

Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake sys­
tem fails or locks .
.,. In an emergency, pull the switch(®) and
continue to pull it to slow your vehicle down
with the parking brake .
... As soon as you release the sw itch <®> or ac-
cele rate , the braking process stops.
If you pull the switch <®> and hold it above a
speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergen­
cy braking function is in itiated . The vehicle is
b raked at all four wheels by activating the hy­
dra ulic bra ke system. The b ra ke performance
i s simi lar to making an emergency stop ¢
A.
In order not to activate the emergency brak­
ing by mistake, an audible wa rning tone (b uz­
z e r) sounds when the switch<®> is pulled. As
soon as the switch(®) is released, or the accel­
erator pedal is depressed , emergency braking
stops .
&_ WARNING
Emergency braking shou ld only be used in
an emergency, when the normal foot brake
has failed or the brake pedal is obstructed.
Using the parking brake to perform emer­
gency braking will slow you r vehicle down
as if you had made a fu ll brake application.
The laws of physics cannot be s uspended
even w ith ESP and its associated compo ­
nents (ABS, ASR, ED L). In corners and
when road or weather conditions are bad,
a full b rake application can cause the vehi­
cle to skid or the rear end to break away -
r isking an accident.
Speed warning system
Introduction
The speed warning system helps you to stay
under a specified maximum speed.
The speed warning system warns you if you
are exceeding the max imum speed that you
have set . You w ill hear a warn ing tone when
your speed exceeds the stored va lue by ap- proximate
ly 3 mph (3 km/h) . An ind icator
light . (USA
models) ;a (Canada models) in
the instr ument cluster d isp lay also turns on at
the same time. The indicator light./.
turns off when the speed decreases be low the
stored maximum speed .
Setting a threshold is recommended if you
would like to be rem inded when you reach a
certain maximum speed. S ituations where you
may wa nt to do so include driv ing in a country
with a general speed limit or if there is a
specified maximum speed for winter tires .
(D Tips
Even though your vehicle is equipped w ith
a speed warn ing system, you should still
watch the speedometer to ma ke sure you
a re not dr iv ing faster than the speed limit.
Setting the threshold
You can set, change and delete the threshold
in the MMI.

ing .
You can set any threshold between 20 mph
(30 km/h) and 150 mph (240 km/h) . Sett ings
can each be adjusted in increments of 5 mph
(10 km/h).

The adaptive cruise control system regulates
the speed and distance to the moving vehicle

Driving in stop-and-go traffic

The adaptive cruise control system also as­ sists you in stop-and-go traffic. If a previous
detected vehicle ahead stops, your vehicle will
brake to a stop, within the limits of the sys­
tem.

In the normal mode D , the transmission auto­
matica lly selects the best gear ratio. It de­
pends on eng ine load, veh icle speed and the
dynamic control program (DRP).
Select the
sport mode S for sporty driving .
The vehicle makes full use of the engine's
power. Shifting is more not iceable when accel ­
erating.
When the vehicle is stationary or at speeds
be low 3 mph (5 km/h), you must always apply
the foot brake before and while mov ing the
lever to
D/S out of N.
In certain circumstances it may be advanta­
geous to temporarily switch to the manual
shift program to manually se lect gear ratios
to match specific driving conditions

Automatic selector lever lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N po­
s iti ons when the ig nition is turned on. To
move the lever from these positions the driver
must depress the brake peda l. As a reminder
to the driver, the following warning appears in
the instrument cluster disp lay when the selec­
tor is in
P and N :
When stationary apply footbrake while se­
lecting gear
A time delay element prevents the selector
lever from locking when it is moved through
the
N position (going from R to D/S ). The
locking element will lock the se lector lever if
the lever is left in N (Neutral) for more than
approximately 1 second, without the brake
pedal being pressed .
At speeds above about 3 mph (5 km/h) the
Automatic Shift Lock is automatically deacti­
vated in the
N position.
Interlock button
The lock button on the selector lever prevents
the lever from being accidentally shifted into
certain positions. Pressing this button deacti­
vates the selector lever lock. Depending on
the direction of the sh ift, the selector lever
locks at different posit ions . The pos itions are
highlighted i n the illustration

Kick-down
Applies to veh icles: w ith tiptron ic
The kick-down feature allows the vehicle to
generate maximum acceleration .
When you press the accelerator pedal beyond
the resistance point that is reached at full
throttle, the transm iss ion w ill select a lower

Audi parking system plus provides audio and
visual signals when parking .
Sensors are located in the front and rear
bumpers .
If these detect an obs tacle, aud ible
and v isua l signa ls warn you . The range at
which the sensors begin to measure is approx­
i ma tely:
side 3 ft (0.90 m)
front
4 ft ( 1. 20 m)
side 2 ft (0.60 m)
rear S.2 ft (1.60 m)
The clos er you get to the obsta cle, the sho rter

installed in a vehicle during a crash. Dam­
age to a child restraint that is not visible
could cause it to fail in another collision
situation.
Advanced front airbag system and children
Your vehicle is equipped with a front "Ad­
vanced Airbag System" in compliance with United States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety
Standard (FMVSS) 208 as applicable at the
time your vehicle was manufactured.
The Advanced Airbag system in your vehicle
has been certified to meet the "low-risk" re­
quirements for 3- and 6-year old children on
the passenger side and small adults on the
driver side. The low risk deployment criteria
are intended to reduce the risk of injury
through interaction with the airbag that can
occur, for example, by being too close to the
steering wheel and instrument panel when
the airbag inflates. In addition, the system
has been certified to comply with the "sup­
pression" requirements of the Safety Stand­
ard, to turn off the front airbag for infants up
to 12 months who are restrained on the front passenger seat in child restraints that are list­
ed in the Standard.
Even though your vehicle is equipped with an
Advanced Airbag system, all children, espe­
cially those 12 years and younger, should al­
ways ride in the back seat properly restrained
for their age and size. The airbag on the pas­
senger side makes the front seat a potentially
dangerous place for a child to ride. The front
seat is not the safest place for a child in a for­
ward-facing child safety seat. It can be a very
dangerous place for an infant or a larger child
in a rearward-facing seat.
The vehicle 's Advanced Airbag System has a
capacitive passenger detection system in the
Child Safety 165
front passenger seat cushion that can detect
the presence of a baby or a child in a child re­
straint system on this seat.
The capacitive passenger detection system
registers the changes that result in an electri­
cal field when a child, a child restraint, and a
baby blanket are on the front passenger seat .
The change in the measured capacitance due
to the presence of a child, a child restraint,
and a baby blanket on the front passenger
seat is related to the child restraint system resting on the seat . The measured capacitance
of a child restraint system varies depending
on the type of system and specific make and
model.
The electrical capacitance of the various
types, makes, and models of child restraints
specified by the U.S.National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration (NH TSA) in the relevant
safety standard are stored in the Advanced
Airbag System control unit together with the
capacitances typical of infants and a 1-year
old child. When a child restraint is used on the
front passenger seat with a typical
1 year-old
infant, the Advanced Airbag System compares
the capacitance measured by the capacitive passenger detection system with the data
stored in the electronic control unit.
Child restraints and Advanced front
airbag system
Regardless of the child restraint that you use,
make sure that it has been certified to meet
United States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety
Standards and has been certified by its manu­
facturer for use with an airbag. Always be sure
that the child restraint is properly installed at
one of the rear seating positions. If in excep­
tional circumstances you must use it on the
front passenger seat, ca refully read all of the
information on child safety and Advanced Air­
bags and heed all of the applicable WARN­
INGS. Make certain that the chi ld and child re­
straint are correctly recognized by the capaci­
tive passenger detection system in the front passenger seat, that the front passenger air­
bag is turned off, and that the airbag status is ..,.
