A WARNING
Do not assume the roads are free of ice based
on the outside temperature display . Be aware
that there may be ice on roads even when the
outside temperature is around 41 °F (+5 °C)
and that ice can increase the risk of accidents .
(D Tips
-Depending on vehicle equipment, the in­
strument illumination (needles and gauges) may turn on when the lights are off and the
ignition is switched on . The illumination for
the gauges reduces automatically and even­
tually turns off as brightness outside in­
creases. This function reminds the driver to
turn the low beams on at the appropriate
time.
- You can select the units used for tempera­
ture, speed and other measurements in the
Infotainment
system ¢ page 245.
-If your vehicle is stationary or if you are driv­
ing at very low speeds, the temperature dis­
played may be slightly higher than the ac­
tual temperature outside due to the heat ra­
diating from the engine.
- At temperatures below 41 °F (+5 °C), a
snowflake symbol appears in front of the
temperature
display ¢,&. .
Coolant temperature indicator
The coolant temperature display @¢ page 10,
fig . 3
or ¢ page 10, fig . 4 only functions when
the ignition is switched on. To prevent engine
damage, please observe the following notes
about the temperature ranges.
Cold range
If only the LEDs at the bottom of the gauge turn
on, the engine has not reached operating tem­ perature yet . Avoid high engine speeds, full ac­
celeration and heavy engine loads.
Cockpit overview
Normal range
The engine has reached its operating tempera­
ture once the LEDs up to the center of the gauge
turn on. If
the. indicator light in the instru­
ment cluster display turns on, the coolant tem­
perature is too
high ¢ page 23.
@ Note
-Auxiliary headlights and other accessories in
front of the cooling-air intake impair the
cooling effect of the coolant. This increases
the risk of the engine overheating during
high outside temperatures and heavy en­
gine load .
- The front spoiler also helps to distribute
cooling air correctly while driving. If the
spoiler is damaged, the cooling effect will
be impaired and the risk of the engine over­
heating will increase. See an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Fa­
cility for assistance.
Tachometer
The tachometer displays the engine speed in rev­
olutions per minute (RPM).
The beginning of the red zone in the tachometer
indicates the maximum permissible engine speed
for all gears once the engine has been broken in
and when it is warmed up to operating tempera­
ture. Before reaching this zone, you should shift
into the next highest gear, select the "D/S" selec­
tor lever position, or remove your foot from the
acce lerato r pedal.

or ¢ page 10, fig. 4 may only be in the
red area of the gauge for a short time or there
is a risk of engine damage . The location where
the red zone begins varies depending on the
engine.

Never d rive until the tank is comple tely emp­
ty. The irregular supp ly of fuel that resul ts
from that can ca use engine misfires. Uncom ­
busted fuel will then ente r the exhaust sys­
tem. Th is can cause overheating and damage
to the cata lytic converter.

Trip odometer and odometer
The trip odome ter shows the dist ance driven
since it was last reset. It can be used to measure
short distances.
The trip odome ter can be rese t to zero by press­
ing
the ~ reset button.
The odometer shows the total d istance that the
ve hicl e has been dr iven .
Malfunction indicator
If there is a malfunct io n in the instrument clus­
ter,
DEF w ill appea r in the trip odometer display .

The short-term memory collects driving informa­
tion from the t ime the ignition is sw itched on un­
til it is switched off. If you continue driv ing with­
i n two hours after switching the ign ition off, the
new values are included when calculating the cur­
rent trip information .
Unlike the short-term memory, the long-term
memory is not e rased automat ical ly. Yo u can se­
l ect the time period for evaluating trip informa­
tion yourself .
Fuel consumption
The current fue l consumption can be shown us­
ing a bar g raph ¢
fig. 14. The average cons ump­
tion stored in the short-term memory is also dis­
p layed .
If the bars are green or the gray tone on
the bars changes (depending on the equipment),
your vehicle is sav ing fuel by the following func ­
tion :
-Rec upe rati on: electrical energy can be stored in
the vehicle battery when the vehicle is coasting or driving downhill. The bar will move toward
0 /0.

Driving
General information
Breaking in
A new vehicle must be broken in for the first
1,000 miles (1,500 km). Do not drive at speeds
that will exceed 2/3 of the maximum permitted
engine speed (RPM) for the first 600 miles
(1,000 km), and avoid full acceleration during
this period . You may gradually start increasing
the RPM and the speed between 600 miles
(1,000 km) and 1,000 miles (1,500 km) .
During the first hours of use, the engine has a
higher internal friction than later on when all
moving parts have settled into p lace with each
other.
How the vehicle is driven during the first 1,000
miles (1,500 km) also affects the engine quality .
Drive at moderate engine speeds after the initial
break-in per iod, part icu larly when running a cold
engine. This will reduce engine wear and improve
the m ileage .
Do not drive at too low of an engine speed (RPM).
Shift down if the engine stops running "smooth­ ly". Extremely high eng ine speeds are automati­
cally reduced.
Reducing the risk of vehicle damage
@ Note
When driving on poor roads, by curbs and on
steep ramps, make sure that low-hang ing
components such as the spoiler and ex haust
system do not come into contact with these
or they cou ld be damaged. This especia lly ap ­
plies to vehicles with low ground clearance
and veh icles that are heavily loaded.
Driving through water on roads
Note the following to reduce the r isk of vehicle
damage when driv ing through water, for example
on flooded roads:
- The water must not be any higher than the bot­
tom of the vehicle body .
Driving
-Do not drive faster than walking speed.
A WARNING

After driving thro ugh water or m ud, the effec ­
tiveness of the brakes may be reduced due to
moisture on the brake rotors and brake pads.
A few careful brake applications shou ld dry
off the brakes and restore the fu ll braking ef­
fect.
@ Note
- Vehicle components such as the engine, transmission, suspens ion or electrical sys-
tem can be severely damaged by driving
through water.
- Always switch the Start/Stop system* off
when driving through water

-Determine the depth before driving through
water.
- Do not stop the vehicle, drive in reverse or
switch the engine off when driving through
water.
- Keep in mind that oncom ing vehicles may
create waves that raise the water level and
make it too deep for your vehicle to drive
through safely.
- Avoid dr iv in g through salt water, because
this can cause corrosion.
Economical and environmentally-friendly
driving
T he amount of fuel consumption, the environ ­
menta l impact and the wear to the engine,
brakes and tires depends most ly on your driving
sty le. With an anticipatory and economic driving
style, fuel consumption can be reduced by ap­ prox imately 10-15%. The following t ips will help
you conserve the environment and your money at the same time .
Anticipatory driving
A vehicle uses the most fuel when accelerating.
When you drive w ith anticipation, you do not
need to brake as often and so you accelerate less.
When poss ible, let your vehicle coast with a gear
.,.

engaged, for examp le when you notice that the
next traffic light is red . This produces an engine
braking effect, which helps to protect the brakes
and tires and reduces the emissions and fuel con­
sumpt ion to zero (fuel shut-off during decelera­
tion) .
Shift effici entl y
Upshifting earlier is an effective way to save fuel.
Staying in a gear too long uses fue l unnecessari­
ly .
Press down on the acce lerator peda l slowly and
avoid "kick -down".
Avoid full acceleration
You shou ld rare ly t ravel at the maximum vehicle
speed. High speeds cause a d isp ropor tionately
high increase in fuel consumption, emissions and
traffic noise . Driving more slowly saves fue l.
Reduce idling time
The Start/Stop system* helps to reduce the idling
time automatically. In vehicles witho ut the Start/
Stop system* , it is
efficient to switch the eng ine
off when stopped at rai lroad crossings and long
red lights . Stopping the engine for
30 -40 sec ­
onds already saves more fu el than the amount of
extra fuel needed to restart the engine.
It t akes a very long time in idle to wa rm the en ­
gine up to operating temperature . Wear and
emissions are especially high in the warm -up
phase. Therefore, you should begin driving im­
mediately after starting the engine. Avoid high
RPMs while do ing th is .
Ha ve mainten anc e performed regularly
By having maintenance performed regu lar ly on
your veh icle, you can he lp to reduc e fuel con­
sumpt ion before you even start to dr ive. The
maintenance condition of your vehicle not only
affects traffic safety and long -term value but al­
so impacts fuel consumption . A poorly main­
tained engine can lead to fuel consumpt ion that
is
1 0% hi gher tha n normal.

Avoid short trip s
The engine and exh aust clean ing system mus t
reach their optima l operating temperature to ef­
fective ly reduce consumption and emissions.
A cold engine uses a d isp roportionately high
amoun t of fue l. The eng ine re aches opera ting
temperat ure and cons umption norma lizes on ly
after approximate ly 2.5 mi les (4 km) .
Check the tire pressure
To save fue l, ma ke sure the t ires are always in­
flated to the correct
press ure~ page 335. The
fuel consumpt ion can increase by
5% if the pres ­
sure is on ly
0 .5 bar too low. Due to t he increased
rolling resistance, low tire pressures wi ll also
l ead to greater tire wear and will affect driving
behavior.
Do not drive on winter tires year -round, as this
will consume up to

The eng ine d rives the generator, which generates
electr ic ity; the f uel consumpt ion also inc reases

electrica l eq uipment o ff when you no longe r
need it . Examples of eq uipment that uses a lot of
energy are air blowers at a high setting, the rear
window defogger and seat heating* .

Do not leave engine idling unattended after
starting. If warning lights s houl d come on to
i ndicate improper operation, they would go
unheeded. Extended idling also produces
h eat, which could result in overheating or
other damage to the veh icle or othe r proper­

Driving with a trailer
General information
Your veh icle is primari ly intended for transport­
ing peop le and luggage. Howeve r, if you dr ive
with a tra iler , follow the techn ica l requirements ,
the operation and driving tips, and the lega l reg ­
ulations.
Dr iving w ith a trailer affects the vehicle 's fuel
consumpt ion, performance and wear. It a lso re­
quires higher concentration from the driver .
A WARNING
Do not transport any people in a trailer due to
the risk of fatal injury .
Technical requirements
Certain requirements must be met when towing
a trailer.
Trailer hitch
Only use a trailer hitch with a removab le ball
h itch mount and ball h itch. The tra ile r hitc h must
be pe rm it t ed for the vehicle, the tra iler and the
permitted tota l weight of the trailer being
pu lled . Above all, it must be secure ly and safe ly
attached to the vehicle trailer.
Never mo unt a t rai ler hitch on the bumper. The
trai ler hitc h must be mounted in a way that does
not impair the function of the bumper. Do not
make any changes to the exhaust system and the
brake system.
Check regu larly if the trai ler hitc h is securely
mounted . A lways follow the instructions given by
the trai ler hitch manufacturer .
Trailer brakes
If t he tra ile r has its own bra ke system, then fol­
low the manufacturer specifica tions. Howeve r,
the brake system on the trai ler must never be
connected to the vehicle brake system.

D riving w ith a tra ile r means a higher load on t he
engine and the cooling sys tem. The coo ling sys­
tem must be designed for additiona l load and
contain enoug h

A WARNING -
- Never mount a "weight -distributing" or
"load-balancing" trailer coupler as the trail­
er hitch. The ve hicle was not des igned for
these types of tra iler h itches. The tra iler
h itch can malfunction and t he tra ile r can
b reak off from the vehicle.
- If t he tra ile r i s equ ipped w ith elect ronic
brakes, these brakes can not be activated by
a facto ry-installed control system, whi ch in­
creases the r isk of an accide nt.
- To red uce the r is k of injury, always remove
the ball hitch mount if no tra ile r is mo unt ­
ed.

su itab le cooli ng system, especially if the out­
s ide temperatu res a re high. ot herwise, this

Operating instructions
Several things must be noted when towing a
trailer.
Towing capacity
The permitted towing capacity must not be ex ­
ceeded under any
circumstances ~ page 370.
You can dr ive up larger inclines if you are not us­
i ng the maximum towing capacity.
The towing capacities given only apply to e leva ­
tions up to 3,200 ft (1,000 m) above sea level. As
the e levation increases, the engine power de­
creases due to the decreasing air pressures. T his
reduces the hill climb ing ability and towing ca­
pac ity . For every additional 3,200
ft (1,000 m),
t h e maximum permitted tow ing weight must be
r educed by app roximately 10% . T he pe rm itted
tow ing weight is t he comb ined we igh t of the
( loaded) vehicle and the (loaded) trailer .
