Child safety
-Always make sure the seat backrest to which
the child restraint is installed is in an up­
right position and securely latched into
place and cannot fold forward. Otherwise,
the seatback with the child safety seat at­
tached to it could fly forward in the event of
an accident or other emergency situation.
- Always read and heed all WARNINGS when­
ever using a child restrained in a vehicle is

Deactivating the convertible locking
retractor
The convertible locking retractor for child re­
straints will be deactivated automatically when
the belt is wound all the way back into the re­
tractor .
~ Press the red button on the safety belt buckle.
Th@ belt tongue will pop out of the buckle.
~ Guide the safety belt all the way back into its
stowed position .
Always let the safety belt retract completely into its stowed position . The safety belt can now be
used as an ordinary safety belt without the con­
vertible locking retractor for child restraints.
If the convertible locking retractor should be ac­
tivated inadvertently, the safety belt must be un­
fastened and guided completely back into its
stowed position to deactivate this feature .
If the
convertible locking retractor is not deactivated,
the safety belt will gradually become tighter and
uncomfortable to wear.
_& WARNING
Improperly installed child safety seats in­
crease the risk of serious personal injury and
death in a collision.

- Never unfasten the safety belt to deactivate
the convertible locking retractor for child re­
straints while the vehicle is moving. You

would not be restrained and could be seri­ ously injured in an accident.

Child Restraint System anchors and how
are they related to child safety
To provide a s impler and more pract icable way to
attach the child restraint on the vehicle seat, Fed­
e ral regulations requi re specia l lower anchorages
i n veh icles and devices on new child restrain ts to
attach to the vehicle anchorages.
The combination of the tether anchorages and
the lower anchorages is now generally called the
L A TCH system for " Lower Anchorages and
Tethers for Children ."
F orward-facing child restrain ts manufactured af­
ter September 1, 1999, are requi red by U.S. fed­
eral regu lations to comply with new child head
movement per formance requirements . These
new performance requirements make a tether
necessary on most new chi ld seats.
I nstall ing a chi ld restraint that requ ires a top
tether witho ut one can serio usly impair the per ­
formance of the chi ld restraint and its ability to
protect the child in a coll is ion. Insta lling a child
restra int that requires a top tether without the
top tether may be a violation of state law.
Child restraint manufact urers offer LATCH lower
anchorages on their child seats with hook-on or
push-on connectors attached to adjustable
s t raps .
In add ition to the LATCH lower anchorages , these
child restraint systems usua lly require the use of
tether straps to help keep the child restraint
f irmly in place .
A WARNING
Improper installation of chi ld restraints will
increase the risk of in ju ry and death in a crash.
- Always follow the instructions prov ided by
the manufacturer of the child restra int you
intend to install i n your veh icle.
- Never install a child restraint without a properly attached top tether strap if the

- Improper use of child rest raint LATCH lower
anchorage points can lead to injury in a co lli­
sion . The LATCH lower anchorage points are
des igned to w ithstand only those loads im­

one LATCH lower anchorage po int .
- Never secure or attac h any luggage or other
item to the LATCH lower anchorages.

In Canada, the terms "top tether" with "lower
universa l anchorages" (or " lower universal an ­
chorage bars") are used to describe the sys­
tem.

Anchorages prov ide a secure and easy -to -use at­
tachment and m inim ize the possibility of improp­

All child restra ints manufactu red after Septem­
ber 1, 2002, must have lower anchorage attach ­
men ts for the
LATCH system .
Remember that the lower anchorage points are
only intended for installation and attachment of
child restraints spec ifically cert ified for use with
LATCH lower anchorages . Child restraints that are
not equipped with the lower a nchorage attach-

ments can still be installed in compliance with
the child restraint manufacturer's instructions on

The tether anchors for the rear seating positions
are located in recesses in the rear window shelf
~ fig . 150 .
A tether is a stra igh t or V-shaped strap that at­
t a ches the top p art of a chil d restra int to speci al
anchorage points in the vehicle.
T he purpose of the tether is to reduce the for­
ward movement of the child restrain t in a cra sh,
in o rder to help reduce the risk of head i njury that
cou ld be caused by strik ing the veh icle inter ior .
Forward facing child restraints manufactured af­
te r September 1, 1999, a re req uired by U.S. fed­
eral regula tions to comp ly w ith child head move­
ment performance requirements . These new per ­
formance requirements make a tether necessary on most new child safety seats.

-Never attach a tether strap to a tie-down
hook in the luggage compartment.
- Never use child restraint tether anchorages
to secure safety belts or other kinds of occu­
pant restraints.
- Never secure or attach any luggage or other
items to the LATCH lower anchorages or to
the tether anchors.
- If a tether or other strap is used to attach a
child restraint to the front passenger seat,
make sure that it is not so tight, that it
causes the weight-sensing mat to measure
more weight than is actually on the seat .
- The heavier weight registered can make the
Advanced Airbag System work as though an
adult were on the seat and deploy the Ad­
vanced Airbag when it must be suppressed
causing serious or even fatal injury to the
child.
- If you must install a rearward facing child
safety seat on the front passenger seat be­ cause of exceptional circumstances and the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not
come on and stay on, immediately install
the rear-facing child safety seat in a rear
seating position and have the airbag system inspected by your authorized Audi dealer.

Releasing the tether strap
.,. Loosen the tension following the child restraint
manufacturer's instructions.
.,. Depress the spring catch on the hook and re­
lease it from the anchorage.
(D Note
If you leave the child restraint with the tether
strap firmly installed for several days, this
could leave a mark on the upholstery on the
seat cushion and backrest in the area where
the tether strap was installed. The upholstery
would also be permanently stretched around
the tether strap. This applies especially to
leather seats.
Using tether straps on rearward-facing
child restraints
Currently, few rearward-facing child restraint sys­
tems come with a tether. Please read and heed
the child restraint system manufacturer's instruc­
tions carefully to determine how to properly in­
stall the tether.
A WARNING
A child in a rearward-facing child safety seat
installed on the front passenger seat will be
seriously injured and can be killed if the front
airbag inflates -even with an Advanced Airbag
System.
- The inflating airbag will hit the child safety
seat or infant carrier with great force and
will smash the child safety seat and child against the backrest, center armrest, or
door.

Checking and Filling Hood
Releasing and opening the engine hood
The engine hood is released from inside the vehi­
cle.

Before opening the engine hood, make sure that
the windshield wipers are flat against the wind­
shield . Otherwise, they could damage the paint
on the hood.

- To reduce the r isk of being burned, never

Closing the engine hood
.. Pull the hood down until the pressure from the
struts is reduced.

A WARNING
A hood that is not comp letely latched could
fly up and block your view while driving.
- When you close the engine hood, check it to
make sure the safety catch has properly en­
gaged . The hood should be flush with the
surrounding vehicle body parts.
- If you notice while driv ing that the hood is
not secured properly, stop at once and close
it.
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in the
engine compartment.
-
Whenever you must perform any work in the
engine compartment, for example checking and
filling different fluids , there i s a risk of injury ,
burns and accidents. To prevent personal injury
always observe the following WARNINGS . The
engine compartment of any vehicle is a hazard­
ous area

To help avoid injury, before you check any-
thing under the hood:
- Turn off the engine.
- Remove the ignition key .
- Apply the parking brake.
- Move selector lever of automatic transmis-
sion to "P" (Park) .
-Always let the engine cool down. Hot com ­
ponents wi ll burn skin on contact .
- To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam o r
coo lant escaping from the engine

properly diagnosed. Keep in mind that the
accurate meas urement of oil cons umption
requires great care and may take some time.
An authorized Audi dealer has instructions
about how to measure oil consumption ac ­
curately.
Checking the engine oil level

Read oil level
• Park your vehicle so that it is horizonta lly level.
• Shut the engine off when it is at operating tem-
perature.
• Switch only the ignition back on.
• Wait approx . two minutes.
• Select: Function button

Depending on the way the vehicle is driven and
the operating conditions, oil consumpt ion can be
up to 1 quart per 600 miles (0.8 liter pe r 1,000
km). Consumption may be higher within the f irst
3,000 mi les (5,000 km).
@ Tips
The oil level indicator in the MMI* Display is
only an information disp lay. If the oil level is
too low, a minimum oil warning appears in
the instrument cluster. Add oi l

If the hood has been opened, the current oil
level is shown in the instrument cluster the
next time the ignition is switched on.

thoroughly.

Tire repair set
General and safety pointers
Tire repair is intended only for temporary, short­
term use .

Your vehicle is equipped with a tire repa ir kit, the
Tire Mobility System (TMS) .
In the event of a tire fail ure, the TMS is in the
l uggage compartment under the floor. It consists
of the t ire sealant and an electric air pump.
Using
TMS , tire damage caused by foreign bodies
u p to abo ut
0.16 inch (4 mm ) in diameter can be
sealed reliably .
The foreign object must stay in the tire.
The tire sealant must not be used:
- for cu ts or pu nctures in the tire w hich a re larger
than 0 .16 inch (4 mm)

Soft ground under the jack can cause the veh icle
to s lip off the jack. A lways place the jack on firm
ground. Use a flat, stable support if necessary.
Use a non-slip surface suc h as a rubber mat on a
slipper y surface such as tile.
_& WARNING
--You or your passengers could be injured
while changing a wheel if you do not follow
these safety precautions:
- Position the vehi cle jack on ly at the desig­
nated lifting points and a lign the jack.
Otherwise, the vehicle jack could slip and
cause an injury if it does not have suffi­
cient hold on the vehicle.
- A soft or unstable surface under the jack
may cause the vehicle to slip off the jack .
Always provide a f irm base for the jack on
the g round. If necessary, use a sturdy
board under the jack.
- On hard, slippery surface (such as tiles)
use a rubber mat or similar to prevent the
jack from slipp ing .
- To help prevent injury to yourself and your
passengers:
- Do no t ra ise the vehicle until you are s ure
the jack is secure ly engaged.
- Passengers must not remain in the veh icle
when it is jacked up .
- Make sure tha t passengers wait in a safe
pla ce away from the veh icle and we ll away
from the road and traffic.
- Make sure jack pos ition is cor rect, adjus t
as necessary and then contin ue to raise
the jack .

Do not lift the vehicle by the sill. Posi tion the

Tires with unidirectional tread design
Tires with unidirectional tread design must be
mounted with their tread pattern pointed in the
right direction.
Using a replacement tire with a tread pattern
intended for use in a specific direction
When using a replacement tire with a tread pat·
tern intended for use in a specific direction,
please note the following:
- The direction of rotation is marked by an
arrow
on the side of the tire .
-If the replacement tire has to be installed i n
the inco rrect direction, use the tire only tempo·
rarily since the tire will not be able to achieve
its optimum performance characteristics with
regard to aquaplaning, noise and wear.
- We recommend that you pay particular atten·
tion to this fact during wet weather and that
you adjust your speed to match road condi­
tions .
- Replace the flat tire with a new one and have it
installed on your vehicle as soon as possible to
restore the handling advantages of a unidirec­
t ional tire.
Notes on wheel changing
Please read the information ¢ page 203, New
tires or wheels
if you are going to use a replace­
ment tire which is different from the t ires on your
vehicle.
After you change a tire:
- Check the tire pressure on the replacement
tire immediately after installation.
- Have the wheel bolt tightening torque
checked with a torque wrench as soon as pos­
sible by your authorized Audi dealer or quali­
fied workshop.
- With steel and alloy wheel rims, the wheel
bolts are correctly tightened at a torque of 90
ft lbs . (120 Nm).
- If you notice that the wheel bolts are corroded
and difficult to turn while changing a tire,
they should be replaced before you check the
tightening torque.
Emergency assistance
- Replace the flat tire with a new one and have
it installed on your vehicle as soon as possi­
ble. Remount the wheel cover.
Until then, drive with extra care and at reduced
speeds.
_& WARNING
- If you are going to equip your vehicle with
tires or rims which differ from those which
were factory installed, then be sure to read
the information¢
page 203, New tires or
wheels.
- Always make sure the damaged wheel or
even a flat tire and the jack and tool kit are properly secured in the luggage com part·
ment and are not loose in the passenger
compartment.
- In an accident or sudden maneuver they
could fly forward, injuring anyone in the ve·
hide.
-Always store damaged wheel, jack and tools
securely in the luggage compartment. 0th·
erwise, in an accident or sudden maneuver
they could fly forward, causing injury to pas­
sengers in the vehicle.
(D Note
Do not use commercially available tire seal·
ants. Otherwise, the electrical components of
the tire pressure monitoring system* will no
longer work properly and the sensor for the
tire pressure monitoring system* will have to b e replaced by qualified workshop.
