An additional bulb in the headlight prov ides a corner ing light @ in

When you activate the turn signal lever, the Adaptive Light for the
same s ide is sw itched on. Please note that the t urn signal lever must
engage.
Adaptive Light is not switched on if you on ly move the turn signal
lever to the point of resistance to s ignal a lane change~
page 64,
"Turn signal ¢i c:> and high beam ~o lever".
When d riving arou nd bends, Adaptive Light is con tro lled according to
steering wheel angle.
• It is switched on in tight corners.
• It is not switched on in long, open bends .
Adaptive Light (in curves )
When driving through curves, the low beams © are automatica lly
cont rolled depending on driving speed and the steer ing w heel angle.

The two main beams p ivot at d ifferent angles so that there is no unil­

• T he system works up to a speed of abo ut 4 3 mph (70 km/h). If the
speed is higher, it is not activated .
• Adaptive Light ( in curves) func tions at a speed of abo ut 6 mph
(10 km/h) and is deactivated at speeds below abo ut 4 mph
(6 km/h). •
Emergency flasher ~
The emergency flasher makes other motorists aware that
you or your vehicle ore in on emergency situation.

flashers on or off.
When the emergency flasher is on, all four turn signals blink at the

Automatic wiper /washer
- Pull the lever to position © (toward the steering wheel)
and hold.
- Release the lever . The washer stops and the wipers keep
going for about four seconds.
Turning off the wipers
- Move the lever back to positio n@ .
The windshield wipe rs and washer only work when the ignition is
turned on.
T he rain sensor is only activated with the wiper leve r set to position
@ . When i t starts to rain, the rain sensor will automatically activate
the intermittent wiping mode .
T o red uce the sensit iv ity of the senso r, move sw itch @down. To
increase the sensitivity, move the switch up . The higher you adjust the

sensitivity, the faster the sensor will react when it senses mo isture on
t he windsh ie ld. T he rain senso r wiper inte rvals depend on the sensi­
tiv ity setting as well as vehicle speed . During brief stops, w iper
motion will adj ust in relation to the amount of rain on the winds hield.
Dur ing b rief stops, e .g . at a red light , w iper motion will automatically
be reduced to the next lower speed. Wipers already turn ing at low
speed. c hange to intermittent w iping.
When the ign ition is turned on, the washer jets are heated.
With the low beam headlights switched on, pull the wiper lever
towards you o nly
briefly to clean the w indshield . Holding the wiper
lever would also engage the headlight washer system each time you
clean the w indshield and would d rain the washer fluid rese rvoir
prematurely .

• The rain sensor i s only des igned t o assist and support the

• The win dshield mu st not be treated with wat er- re pellent
m aterial s. They c an in crease gla re under po or visibilit y condit ions
s u ch as wetn ess, darkne ss, or when the sun i s low on the horizon .
In addition , they can cause the wi ndshield wipers to chatter.

In freezing or near freezing conditions:
• Always check that the wiper blades a re not frozen to the glass

General recommendations
Why is your seat adjustment so important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can only provide
maximum protection if the front seats are correctly
adjusted.
Th ere a re va rious ways of ad justing t he fro nt seats to provide safe and
comfor ta ble suppo rt for th e dr iver and the front passenger . Ad just
your sea t properly so that :
• you can eas ily and quickly reach all the switches and controls in t he
in st rumen t pa nel
• your body is prope rly s upported th us reducing phys ica l stress and
f a tigue
• the safety be lts and airbag system can offe r maxim um protection

In the following sect ions, you will see exactly how you can best ad just
your sea ts .
Th ere a re sp ecial regulations and instr uct io ns for installing a ch ild
sea t on the front passenge r's sea t. Always follow t he informat ion
r e gar ding ch ild safety provided in ::;,

L1}. WARNING
Incor rect seat ing position of the driver and all othe r passengers
can result in serious personal injury .
• Always keep your feet on the floor when the vehicle is in
motion -never put your feet on top of the instrument panel , out
of the window or on top of the seat cushion . This applies especially
to the passengers. If your seating position is incorrect, you
increase the risk of injury in the case of sudden braking or an acci-

dent. If the airbag inflates and the seating position is incorrect,
this could result in personal injury or even death.
• It is important for both the driver and front passenger to keep
a distance of at least 10 inches (25 cm) between themselves and
the steering wheel and /or instrument panel. If you 're sitting any
closer than this , the airbag system cannot protect you properly. In
addition, the front seats and head restraints must be adjusted to
your body height so that they can give you maximum protection.
• Always try to keep as much distance as possible between your­
self and the steering wheel or instrument panel.
• Do not adjust the dr iver's or front passenger's seat while the
vehicle i s moving. Your seat may move unexpectedly , causing
sudden loss of vehicle control and personal injury. If you adjust
your seat while the vehicle is moving , you are out of position.•
Driver's seat
Th e correct seat p osition is important for safe and
re lax ed driving.
W e recomme nd that you a djust t he dr ive r's sea t in t he
follow ing ma nne r:
- Adjust t he seat i n fore and aft d irect ion so t hat you can
easily p ush t he peda ls to the floor whi le keep ing your
k n ees sli ghtly bent =>

Heated rear seats
The seat cushions and seat backs of the two outer rear
seats can be heated electrically.

- Rotate the thumb wheel@ to turn on and adjust the
heating for the left rear seat.
- Rotate the thumb wheel ® to turn on and adjust the
heating for the right rear seat.
With the thumb wheel in the O position, heating for the seats is
turned off . The range of adjustment is from 1 to 6 .
The rear seat heating operates only when the seats are occupied. If
there is no one sitt ing in the rear, you should switch off the seat
heating.
0 Note
To avoid damage to the heating elements in the seats, do not kneel
on the seats o r place heavy loads on a small area of the seat. •

Steering wheel heating @
The steering wheel can be heated electrically .

When the steering wheel heat ing is switched on, the steer ing wheel
is heated to about
82°F (28°() and held there .
T he last setting se lected for the steer ing wheel heating (on or off) is
automatically saved when the vehicle is shut off and is assigned to the
remote key.•

Adjusting steering wheel position
The steering wheel position can be adjusted for height
and reach.
First, adjust t he driver's se at correct ly.

Th e stee ring wheel ca n be adjusted even when the ign ition is turned
Off . For veh icles with seat memory, the individual pos it io ns for the
steering wheel can be stored along with the seat pos ition.
& WARNING
Improper use of steering wheel adjustment and improper seating
position can cause serious personal injury .
• Adjust the steering wheel column only when the vehicle is not
moving to prevent loss of vehicle control. • Adjust the driver 's seat or steering wheel so that th ere is a
minimum of 10 inches (25 cm ) between your chest and the
steering wheel~
page 188, fig. 198. If you cannot maintain this
m inimum distance, the airbag system cannot protect you prop ­
erly.
• If physical l imitations p revent you from sitting 10 inches (25
c m ) or more from the steering wheel, che ck with your authorized
Audi dealer to see if adapt ive equipment is a vailable.
• If the steering wheel is aligned with your face, the supp le­
mental dri ver 's ai rbag cannot prov ide as much protection in an
accident . Always make sure that the steering wheel i s aligned with
your chest.
• Always hold the steering wheel with your hands at the 9 o 'clock
and 3 o 'clock posit ions to reduce the risk of personal injury if the
driver's airbag deploys .
• Never hold the steering wheel at the 12 o'clock position or with
your hands inside the steering wheel rim or on the steering wheel
hub. Holding the stee ring wheel the wrong way can cause serious

Easy entry feature
The easy entry feature makes it easier to enter and exit
the vehicle by autom atically adjusting the steering
w heel .
Press the button @=> page 11 7, fig. 130 to turn t he easy
en try featur e on or off.
W hen the easy entry fea ture is tu rned on ( button depre ssed) , the
steering wheel moves up to the parked position w hen the ignition is
tu rned off. After you ente r the vehicle, the steerin g wheel moves to
the stored pos ition as soon as you turn on the ign ition .•

The e ngine can be started or turned off with the ignition
key .

ti on . This automatically unloc ks the steer ing co lumn lock. When the
ig nition key is removed, the steer ing colum n lock is a utomat ically

Starting the engine@
The engine starts w ith the key in this position . Major electr ical loads

Turn the ignit ion key to this position and re lease i t.
& WARNING
• Never remove the key from the ignition lock while the vehicle
is moving . The steering wheel will lock , causing loss of control.
• If you have to leave your vehicle, even for just a minute, always
remove the ignition key and take it with you. This is especially
important if you are going to leave children unattended in the
vehicle. The children could start the engine or use other vehicle
controls . Unsupervised use of vehicle controls (for example, power
windows ) can cause serious personal injuries.

• If the i symbol in the display blinks, there is a mal function in t he
elec tronic s tee ring co lumn lock. Follow the in struc tions in
~ page 31 , "Steer ing malfunction~" .

• The brake booster and the servotronic only work when the
engine is running. If you turn off the engine, more force will be
required to steer or brake the vehicle. If you are not prepared, this
could result in a collision and serious personal injury.
• For your safety, move the selector lever to the P position, then
turn off the engine. Otherwise the vehicle could inadvertently roll
away.
• After turning off the engine, the radiator fan can come on and
run for up to 10 minutes -even if the ignition is switched off. Like­
wise, the fan could come on if the temperature in the engine
compartment raises due to heat build up or if you leave the vehicle
standing in direct sunlight.
0 Note
After driving at high engine load, heat can build up in the engine
compartment after you have turned off the engine. This can damage
t he engine. Let the vehicl e stand and run in idl e for about 2 minutes
before turning off the engine. •

Driver's messages in the instrument
cluster
Messages appear in the instrument cluster to let the
driver know if something is missing or if something must
be done.
No key identified
This message appears when you press the [START) button, but there
is no remote contro l key inside the vehicle or if the system does not
recognize the key. For example, if your key is
shielded by an object or
encased, i .e . in side an aluminum briefcase, the signal from the key cannot be detected
. Electron ic devices such as cell phones can also
in terfere w ith the radio signal.
Press brake pedal to start engine
This message appears when you press the !S T ART ) butto n when
starting the engine but you have not depressed the brake pedal.
Engage N or P to start engine
This message appears when you start the engine but the selector
lever is not in the P or N position . The engine can be started only if the
selector lever is in one of these two positions .
Key not in vehicle
This message appears together with the 7 symbol when the remote
control key is removed from the vehicle while the engi ne is running.
Th is is to remind you that you should not cont inue your tr ip without
your key.
If the key is no longer inside the vehicle when you turn off the engine,
you will not be able to switch on the ignition or restart the engine.
Also, you will not be able to lock the vehicle from the outs ide .
Shift to P, otherwise vehicle can roll away. Doors do not lock if lever
is not in P.
Thi s message appears for your safety together with an audible
warning signal when you press the
[STOP) button but the selector
lever is not in the P position and you open the driver's door. Move the
selector leve r in to P, otherwise the vehicle could roll away. I n addi­
tion, you will not be able to lock the ve hicle with either the lock
button located on the door hand le or the remote control.
To engage steering lock, press and hold STOP button
Th is message appears for your personal safety if you switch off the
engine and the ignition by pressing the
[STOP) button and then open
the driver's door. In this case, the steering will still not be locked. The
steering wheel will lock:
• If you press the
I STO P I button for longer than 1 second.
• If you lock the vehicle from the outside .•

Description
Lane assist helps you keep your vehicle in your lane.
Lane assist uses a camera to detect lane boundary lines. If the system
detects that your vehicle is about to leave a lane boundary line, the
steering wheel
vibrates to alert the driver. If lane assist detects
boundary lines on both sides o f the veh icle's lane, the system enters
act ive standby mode, which is indicated by t he gree n indicator light
/: on the instrument cluster .
If the system is in active standby mode and the turn signal is acti­
vated before driving over the boundary line , the warning does not
occur sinc e th e system allows for in tention al lane changes.
The system is designed for driving on freeways and expanded high­
ways and th us works only at speeds of 40 mph (65 km/h) or more.
& WARNING
• Lane assist will not keep your vehicle in your lane. The system
only warns the driver when the vehicle is leaving the lane. The
driver is always responsible for keeping the vehicle in the lane.
• The camera is not able to detect all lane boundary lines and in
some cases might also detect lane structures or objects as
boundary lines. This can lead to incorrect warnings or warnings
that fail to go off at all.
• The camera's visibility can be impaired by vehicles ahead of
you, for instance, or by rain, snow, heavy spray or light shining
into the camera lens. This can cause lane assist to fail to detect
boundary lines. •

Instrument cluster indicator light
/:\Ready: The green indicator light shows that the system is ready to
use. A warning alerts the driver when the vehicle drives over detected
lane boundary lines . -.,

Not read y: The yellow indicator light shows that the system is
turned on but unable to send a warning. T his can be due to the
following:
• T here are no boundary lines, or there is only one boundary line
present.
• The boundary lines are not detected (e .g . due to snow, dirt, wet
conditions or light shining into the camera lens) .
• More than two boundary lines (such as at const ruct ion sites) are
located in the vehicle's lane .
• T he veh icle's speed is below the speed needed to ac tivate it, which
is about 40 mph (65 km/h) .
• T he lane is narrowe r than about 8
ft . (2.5 m), or wider than about
16 ft. (5 m).
• Th e curve is too sharp.

When the lane assist turns off automat ica lly, the instrument cluster
indicator goes out and one of the fo llowing messages appears on the
display :

T his message appears when the camera can no longer function
because it cannot detect the boundary lines. This may be due to the
following:
• T he exte rior side of the came ra viewing window =>
page 142,
fig. 157 is covered with dirt or ice. Clean this part of the windsh ield.
• Th e came ra viewing window is fogged up on the inside. In this
case, wait until the fog d isappears before turning lane assist on
again.
• T he system was unable to detect bo undary lines over an extended
period of time due to road co nd it ions (such as snow-cove red lanes) .
Do not turn lane assist on aga in until the lines can be more easily
detected .

steering wheel vibration .

Steering vibration weak , medium or strong .
Setting the w arning tim e
Earl y: This setting wa rns the dr iver befo re a wheel touches the
detected lane boundary line . The warning depends on the veh icle 's
angle as it approaches the boundary line . If you app roach a bounda ry
line gradually, the warn ing will occur earlier . If you approach the
boundary line at a very sharp angle, the warning will occur just before
a whee l touches the li ne . .,._
