For the 1948 model, Cadillac introduced the legendary
tail
fin which once more set the trend in automotive
styling for nearly
two decades. This was closely
followed with the two door hardtop Coupe DeVille and
the industry's first modern overhead valve, high compression V8 engine on the 1949 model.
Engineering innovations, conveniences and styling dominated the
'50s and '60s. Cruise control, automatic
climate control, tilt and telescoping steering wheels,
twilight sentinel and four door hard tops all debuted in
these years. In 1957 the Eldorado Brougham featured

accident -- even one that isn’t your fault -- you and
your passengers can be hurt. Being a good driver
doesn’t protect
you from things beyond your
control, such as bad drivers.
Most accidents occur within
25 miles (40 km) of
home. And the greatest number of serious injuries
and deaths occur at speeds
of less than 40 mph
(65 kmh).
Safety belts are for everyone.
How to Wear Safety Belts Properly
Adults
This part is only for people of adult size.
Be aware that there are special things to know about safety
belts and children. And there
are different rules for smaller
children and babies.
If a child will be riding in your
Cadillac, see the
part of this manual called “Children.”
Follow those rules for everyone’s protection.
First, you’ll want to know which restraint systems your
vehicle has.
We’ll start with the driver position.
Driver Position
This part describes the driver’s restraint system.
Lap-Shoulder Belt
The driver has a lap-shoulder belt. Here’s how to wear
it properly.
1. Close and lock the door.
2. Adjust the seat (to see how, see “Seats” in the Index)
so you can sit up straight.
1-10

mother, When
a safety belt is worn properly, it’s more
likely that the fetus won’t be hurt in a crash. For
pregnant women, as for anyone, the key to making
safety belts effective
is wearing them properly.
Right Front Passenger Position
The right front passenger’s safety belt works the same
way as the driver’s safety belt. See “Driver Position,”
earlier
in this section.
When the lap portion
of the belt is pulled out all the
way, it will lock. If it does, let it go back
all the way and
start again.
Be sure to use the correct buckle when buckling your
lap-shoulder belt.
If you find that the latch plate will not
go fully into the buckle, see
if you are using the buckle
for the center passenger position.

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine The lap part of the belt should be worn low and snug
on the hips, just touching the thighs. In a crash, this
applies force to the strong pelvic bones. And you’d be
less likely to slide under the lap belt. If you slid under
it, the belt would apply force at your abdomen. This
could cause serious or even fatal injuries. The shoulder
belt should
go over the shoulder and across the chest.
These parts of the body are best able to take belt
restraining forces.
The safety belt locks if there’s a sudden stop or a crash.
You can be seriously hurt if your shoulder belt is
too loose. In
a crash, you would move forward
too much, which could increase injury. The
shoulder belt should fit against your body.
To unlatch the belt, just push the button on the buckle.

positioned so you would be able to unbuckle the
safety belt quickly if
you ever had to.
6. Pull the rest of the lap belt all the way out of the
retractor to set the lock.

the ignition only.
It has
a bar code .attached.
Your dealer or
qualified locksmith
can make extra
ignition keys by
reading the bar

The oval key is for the
doors and all other locks.
When a new Cadillac is
delivered, the dealer
removes
the plug from the
door key. The plug has a
code on
it that tells the
dealer or a qualified
locksmith how to make
extra keys. There are
15 alternative ignition
PASS-Key%I blanks to
help discourage theft. Keep the bar code tag and the
door key plug in a safe place.
If you lose your keys, you
will be able
to have new ones made using the plug or
number on the bar code tag.
NOTICE:
Your Cadillac has a number of new features
that can help prevent theft. But you can have a
lot of trouble getting into your vehicle if you ever
lock your keys inside. You may even have to
damage your vehicle to get in.
So be sure you
have extra keys.

doors will unlock. If someone needs to get out while
your vehicle is not in PARK

again, it will lock automatically.
The doors can be programmed to stay locked when you
shift into PARK

Central Door Unlocking System
With this feature you can unlock the doors from either
front outside door lock. Hold the key in the turned
position for a few seconds.
Anti-Lockout Feature
This feature doesn’t allow you to use the door switches
to lock your doors when the driver’s door is open and
the key is turned to any position. Note that if your
engine is running, this feature will not prevent you from
locking your keys inside. In addition, you can still lock
the doors using the Keyless Entry System regardless
of
the key position.

Your Cadillac is equipped with rear door security locks
that help prevent passengers from opening the rear doors
of your car from the inside. When you want to

2. Then open the door from the outside.
1. Move the lever on the

To cancel the rear door lock:
1. Unlock the door from the inside ana open the door

The rear doors
of your vehicle cannot be opened from
the inside when this feature is in use.
2. Move the lever all the way down.
3. Do the same for the other rear door.
The rear door locks will now work normally.
Leaving Your Vehicle
If you are leaving the vehicle, take your keys, open your
door and set the locks from inside. Then get out and
close the door.
If your vehicle has a theft-deterrent system, see
“Theft-Deterrent” in the Index.
