being replaced, remove booster check valve and seal.
Installation
1) If new booster is being installed, install check valve and
seal. Position booster on dash, and install lock nuts on booster
mounting studs finger tight. Install booster push rod on brake pedal
pin, and secure rod with NEW retaining clip.
2) Tighten booster lock nuts to specification. Install master
cylinder on booster, and tighten mounting nuts to specification. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table. Connect vacuum hose to booster check
valve. Start vehicle and check booster operation.
COMBINATION VALVE
Removal & Installation
Raise and support vehicle. Mark brakelines for assembly
reference. Disconnect parking brake cable from clip on valve, if
necessary. Disconnect brake warning light connection at switch.
Disconnect all brake hydraulic lines at valve. Cap brakelines to
prevent dirt from entering system. Remove valve. To install, reverse
removal procedures. Bleed brake system. See BLEEDING PROCEDURES under
BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM.
AXLE BEARING & SEAL (FULL FLOATING AXLE)
Removal & Installation (Ram Pickup With 12" & 13" Drums)
1) Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel. Remove axle shaft
nuts and washers. Strike center of axle flange to free cones. Remove
axle shaft and gasket.
2) Straighten and remove nut lock. Remove adjustment nut and
outer bearing. Remove drum assembly. Remove seal and inner bearing
from drum assembly.
3) Pack inner bearing, and install inner bearing and seal in
drum. Install drum assembly, outer bearing and adjustment nut. While
rotating drum, tighten adjustment nut to specification. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS table.
4) Back off adjustment nut 1/8 turn to obtain .001-.010" (0.
025-0.254 mm) end play. Bend nut lock into spindle keyway. Install
gasket and axle shaft. Install wheel, and lower vehicle. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS table.

Dakota, Ram Pickup
DESCRIPTION
Clutches on all models are dry, single-disc design.
Adjustment for wear is not possible. Clutch pedal is connected to
release fork through a hydraulic master cylinder and slave cylinder
and is not adjustable. Pre-lubricated clutch bearing is constant
running type. External adjustments cannot be made.
All models are equipped with a clutch pedal position switch.
The switch completes the circuit to the starter relay and is mounted
on clutch master cylinder push rod. The position switch is an integral
part of clutch master cylinder push rod and cannot be serviced
separately.

ADJUSTMENTS
CLUTCH PEDAL FREE PLAY
NOTE: Clutches are a single, dry disc type. Adjustment for wear is
not possible. Clutch is actuated through hydraulic master
cylinder and slave cylinder, and is self-adjusting.
SHIFT LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT
NV231 (Dakota)
1) Shift transfer case into 4H position, and secure shift
lever in shift gate. See Fig. 1. Raise and support vehicle. Loosen
shift rod lock bolt at swivel. Ensure shift rod slides freely in
adjusting swivel.
2) Ensure transfer case range lever is in 4H position. Slide
adjusting swivel forward until shift rod contacts shift gate
crossover, then slide adjusting swivel back, allowing a .11-.20" (3-5
mm) gap between shift lever and shift gate.
3) Center pin on adjusting swivel in shift arm and tighten
lock bolt to 90 INCH lbs. (10 N.m.). Lower vehicle, making sure all
wheels are off floor. Start engine. Shift transfer case through all
ranges to verify correct adjustment.
NV231HD, NV241LD & NV241HD (Ram Pickup)
1) Place shift lever into 2H position. Raise and support
vehicle. Loosen shift rod lock bolt at swivel. See Fig. 2. Ensure
shift rod fits in swivel and does not bind.
2) Ensure transfer case shift lever is in 2H position. Lower
vehicle. Position shift lever in cab so distance between instrument

panel and 2H position dot in shift lever insert is 5.75" (14.6 cm).
Make measurement parallel to floor of vehicle.
3) Tighten shift rod lock bolt to 90 INCH lbs. (10 N.m).
Start engine. Shift transfer case through all ranges to verify proper
operation.
NV242 (Dakota)
1) Put shift lever into 4FT position and secure. Raise
vehicle. Loosen shift rod lock bolt at swivel. See Fig. 1. Ensure
shift rod slides freely in adjusting swivel.
2) Ensure transfer case shift lever is in 4FT position. Slide
adjusting swivel forward until shift lever contacts shifter gate
crossover then slide adjusting swivel back, allowing a 0.11-0.20" (3-5
mm) gap between shift lever and shift gate.
3) Center pin on adjusting swivel in shift arm and tighten
lock bolt to 90 INCH lbs. (10 N.m). Lower vehicle, making sure wheels
are off floor. Start engine. Shift transfer case through all ranges to
verify correct adjustment.

reposition dial indicator plunger on housing face. Place indicator
plunger at rim of housing bore. See Fig. 6. Rotate crankshaft until
indicator plunger is at 10 o'clock position on bore. Zero dial
indicator. Measure and record face runout at 4 points 90 degrees apart
around housing face. See Fig. 7.
2) Perform measurement at least twice. Subtract lowest
reading from highest. For example: 0.009" minus (-0.004")=0.013".
Total allowable face runout is 0.010".
3) Correct housing face runout by installing shims between
clutch housing and transmission. Shims have to be made using shim
stock or similar materials. Use clutch housing face measurement
illustration as an example. See Fig. 7. Three shims will be needed.
Shim thicknesses should be 0.009" at 0.000 corner, 0.012" at -0.003
corner and 0.013" at -0.004 corner.

Removal (AX15 & NV1500)
1) Shift gear selector into 1st or 3rd gear. Raise and
support vehicle. Disconnect necessary exhaust system components.
Remove "Y" pipe and position remaining pipes for working clearance.
Support transmission adjustable jackstand. Disconnect rear cushion and
mounting bracket from transmission or transfer case.
2) Remove rear crossmember. If transmission will be
disassembled for repair, drain transmission fluid. Disconnect
transmission shift linkage, speedometer cable, transfer case vacuum
lines and clutch hydraulic lines. Lower transmission/transfer case
assembly no more than 3" (76 mm). Reaching around transmission case,
unseat and lift shift lever dust boot. Press shift lever retainer
downward, turn retainer counterclockwise, and lift lever and retainer
out of shift tower.
3) Mark front and rear drive shaft and "U" joint for
reassembly reference. Disconnect and remove both drive shafts. Remove
crankshaft position sensor (AX15). Disconnect transmission/transfer
case assembly vent hoses. Remove slave cylinder from clutch housing.
Remove wire harness from clips on transmission case and transfer case.
4) Support transmission/transfer case assembly with
transmission jack. Secure assembly to jack with safety chains.
Reposition adjustable jackstand under engine. Remove clutch housing
brace rod. Remove clutch housing nuts and bolts. Remove
transmission/transfer case assembly.
Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure. Apply high-temperature
grease to release fork, lever, pivot ball stud and pilot bushing
located in end of crankshaft. Fill transmission with appropriate
fluid, if necessary. Tighten all nuts and bolts to specification. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
Removal (NV 3500)
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Shift transmission to
Neutral. Open console lid and remove bolts attaching console to floor
pan. Lift cup holder bin and remove bolt attaching console to floor
pan. Lift rear of console and pull console rearward to separate from
shift bezel. Remove console from vehicle. Remove screws attaching
shift boot to floor pan and slide boot upward on lever extension.
2) Remove shift lever extension. Raise and support vehicle.
On 4WD models, remove skid plate, if equipped. Mark drive shaft and
axle yoke for alignment reference. Remove drive shaft. Remove exhaust
"Y" pipe. On 4WD models, disconnect and lower remaining exhaust pipes
for clearance as necessary. Disconnect speed sensor harness connector
and back-up light harness connector.
3) Support engine using adjustable jackstand. If transmission
is to be disassembled for repair, drain lubricant from transmission.
On 4WD models, disconnect transfer case shift linkage at transfer case
range lever and remove shift lever from transmission. Remove
bolts/nuts attaching transmission to rear mount.
4) Support transmission with a transmission jack. Secure
transmission with safety chains. Remove rear crossmember. On 4WD
models, support transfer case with transmission jack and secure
transfer case to jack with safety chains. Remove transfer case
attaching nuts and move transfer case rearward until input gear clears
transmission output shaft.
5) Lower transfer case assembly and remove it from under
vehicle. On 4WD models, remove clutch slave cylinder splash shield, if
equipped. Remove clutch slave cylinder and move aside for working
clearance. Remove starter. Remove transmission splash shield. Remove
transmission harness wires from clips on transmission shift cover.
6) Lower transmission slightly. Remove shift tower and lever
assembly. Remove transmission-to-engine attaching bolts. Slide

NOTE: Clutch release bearing is packed with grease. DO NOT use
cleaning solvent to clean release bearing.
Removal
1) Remove transmission and clutch housing. See TRANSMISSION
(DAKOTA) or TRANSMISSION (RAM PICKUP). Disconnect release bearing fr\
om
fork, and remove bearing. See Fig. 11. Remove release fork.
2) Inspect bearing. Bearing should turn smoothly under a
light thrust load. Inspect release fork and fork ball pivot for
distortion and wear.
Installation
1) Lubricate crankshaft pilot bearing, input shaft splines,
bearing retainer slide surface, fork pivot and release fork pivot
surface with high-temperature bearing grease.
2) Install release fork and release bearing. Ensure fork and
bearing are properly secured. Install transmission and clutch housing.

CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER
Removal
1) Disconnect clutch pedal interlock switch wires. Remove
locating clip from clutch master cylinder mounting bracket. Remove
retaining clip, flat washer and wave washer that attach clutch master
cylinder push rod to clutch pedal. Slide clutch master cylinder push
rod off pedal pin. Ensure cap on clutch master cylinder reservoir is
tight.
2) Remove clutch fluid reservoir. Rotate clutch master
cylinder 45 degrees counterclockwise to unlock it. Remove cylinder
from dash panel. Remove clutch master cylinder rubber seal from dash
panel.
Installation
Lubricate cylinder seal with liquid soap to ease
installation. Seat seal in dash and around cylinder. To install,
reverse removal procedure.

GENERAL INFORMATION
DaimlerChrysler Computer Relearn Procedures
INTRODUCTION
Vehicles equipped with engine or transmission/transaxle
computers may require a computer relearn procedure after the vehicle
battery is disconnected. Vehicle computers memorize and store vehicle
operation patterns for optimum driveability and performance. When the
vehicle battery is disconnected, this memory is lost, resulting in a
driveability problem. Depending on the vehicle and how it is equipped,
the following driveability problems may exist:
* Rough or unstable idle.
* Hesitation or stumble.
* Rich or lean running.
* Poor fuel mileage.
* Harsh or poor transmission/transaxle shift quality.
Default data is used until NEW data from each key start is
stored. As the computer restores its memory from each new key start,
driveability is restored.
Driveability problems may occur during the computer relearn
stage. To accelerate computer relearn process after battery removal
and installation, specified computer relearn procedures should be
performed. See appropriate procedures under specified manufacturer.
COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES
ALL MODELS
NOTE: Read all procedures listed to determine why each procedure is
to be performed before proceeding.
Vehicle Driveability Computer Relearn Procedure
Manufacturer does not provide a specified computer relearn
procedure for obtaining proper driveability. If vehicle battery was
disconnected or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) was replaced, driving
the vehicle will enable the PCM to perform a computer relearn
procedure for obtaining proper driveability. Inform customer that
driveability may differ from what they are accustomed to until the PCM
completes the computer relearn procedure.
NOTE: If Powertrain Control Module (PCM) was replaced, the correct
vehicle mileage and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) must
be programmed into the PCM to prevent Diagnostic Trouble
Codes (DTCs) from being set in the Anti-Lock Brake System
(ABS) module and Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) module\
.
To program PCM and clear DTCs from ABS and SRS modules,
proceed to appropriate procedure listed. If replacing
Powertrain Control Module (PCM) on models equipped with a
Smart Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM), the secret key data must\
also be updated to enable engine starting. To update secret
key data, proceed to appropriate procedure listed.
Programming PCM & Clearing DTCs From ABS & SRS Modules
Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) below driver's\
side of instrument panel. Using scan tool, enter correct VIN and
mileage into PCM. Using scan tool manufacturer's instructions, clear

DTCs from ABS and SRS modules.
Updating Secret Key Data
Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) below driver's\
side of instrument panel. Go to ENGINE, then MISC menu on scan tool.
Place the SKIM in SECURED ACCESS MODE by using the appropriate
Personal Identification Number (PIN) for this vehicle. PIN may be
obtained from the owner, vehicle's invoice, or from the manufacturer.
Select UPDATE THE SECRET KEY DATA. The data will be transferred from
Smart Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) to the PCM.
NOTE: If 3 attempts are made to enter the SECURED ACCESS MODE using
the incorrect Personal Identification Number (PIN), the
SECURED ACCESS MODE will be locked out for one hour. To exit
this locked-out mode, leave ignition switch in the ON
position for one hour with all accessories turned off. It may
be necessary to monitor battery state and connect a battery
charger.
FWD CARS & FWD VANS
Transaxle Shift Quality Quick Learn Procedure (All FWD Cars
Except Avenger & Sebring Coupe, & All FWD Vans)
1) Transaxle shift quality quick learn procedure must be
performed to provide proper transaxle operation if any of the
following have been done:
* Vehicle battery was disconnected.
* Transaxle assembly was replaced.
* Transmission Control Module (TCM) was replaced.
* Solenoid assembly was replaced.
* Valve body was reconditioned or replaced.
2) Transaxle shift quality quick learn procedure must be
performed using Chrysler's Diagnostic Readout Box III (DRB-III) scan
tool. Following conditions must be met when performing transaxle shift
quality quick learn procedure:
* Brakes must be applied.
* Engine speed must be greater than 500 RPM.
* Throttle position sensor angle must be less than 3 degrees.
* Shift lever must remain in designated position until prompted
to shift to overdrive.
* Shift lever must remain in overdrive after the shift to
overdrive until scan tool indicates procedure is complete.
* Calculated oil temperature must be within 60-200
F
(16-93C).
3) Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) below
driver's side of instrument panel. For DLC location, see appropriate
SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
4) Go to TRANSMISSION display on scan tool. Go to
MISCELLANEOUS display on scan tool. Select QUICK LEARN PROCEDURE
display on scan tool. Follow instructions displayed on scan tool to
perform transaxle shift quality quick learn procedure. Remove scan
tool.
Transaxle Shift Quality Quick Learn Procedure (Avenger &
Sebring Coupe)
1) Transaxle shift quality quick learn procedure must be
performed to provide proper transaxle operation after replacing or
overhauling transaxle. After transaxle work is completed, clear any
Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) as necessary. Connect Chrysler's
