Sounding a Panic Alarm
Note:The panic alarm will only operatewhen the ignition is off.
Press the button to activate thealarm. Press the button again orturn the ignition on to deactivateit.
Remote Start (If Equipped)
WARNING
To avoid exhaust fumes, do not useremote start if your vehicle is parkedindoors or areas that are not wellventilated.
Note:Do not use remote start if your vehicleis low on fuel.
The remote start button is on thetransmitter.
This feature allows you to start yourvehicle from outside the vehicle. Thetransmitter has an extended operatingrange.
Vehicles with automatic climate controlcan be set to operate when you remotestart the vehicle. See Climate Control(page 103). A manual climate controlsystem will run at the setting it was set towhen you switch the vehicle off.
Many states and provinces haverestrictions for the use of remote start.Check your local and state or provinciallaws for specific requirements regardingremote start systems.
The remote start system will not work if:
•the ignition is on
•the alarm system is triggered
•you disable the feature
•the hood is open
•the transmission is not in P
•the vehicle battery voltage is too low
•the service engine soon indicator is on.
Remote Starting the Vehicle
Note:You must press each button withinthree seconds of each other. Your vehiclewill not remote start and the horn will notsound if you do not follow this sequence.
The label on your transmitter details thestarting procedure.
To remote start your vehicle:
1. Press the lock button to lock all thedoors.
2. Press the remote start button twice.The exterior lamps will flash twice.
The horn will sound if the system fails tostart.
Note:If you remote start your vehicle withan integrated keyhead transmitter, you mustswitch the ignition on before driving yourvehicle. If you remote start your vehicle withan intelligent access transmitter, you mustpress the START/STOP button on theinstrument panel once while applying thebrake pedal before driving your vehicle.
The power windows will not work duringthe remote start and the radio will not turnon automatically.
The parking lamps will remain on and thevehicle will run for 5, 10, or 15 minutes,depending on the setting.

MANUAL CLIMATE CONTROL
Defrost: Distributes air through the windshield defroster vents and demistervents. You can also use this setting to defog and clear the windshield of a thincovering of ice.

Rear defrost and heated mirrors: Turns the heated mirrors off and on as wellas the heated rear window, if your vehicle has that feature. See HeatedWindows and Mirrors (page 106).

Air distribution control: Press to set the air distribution to a position.Floorand defrost distributes air through the windshield defroster vents, demistervents and floor vents.Panel distributes air through the instrument panel vents.Panel and floor distributes air through the instrument panel vents, floor vents,and demister vents.Floor distributes air through the floor vents.

A/C: Press to turn air conditioning off and on. Air conditioning cools the vehicleusing outside air. To improve air conditioning when starting your vehicle, drivewith the windows slightly open for two to three minutes.

Recirculated air: Press to switch between outside air and recirculated air.When the air in the passenger compartment is recirculating, the LED on thebutton illuminates. Using recirculated air can reduce the time needed to coolthe interior and reduce unwanted odors from entering your vehicle.

MAX A/C: Distributes recirculated air through the instrument panel vents tocool the vehicle. This position is more economical and efficient than normalA/C.

HINTS ON CONTROLLING THE
INTERIOR CLIMATE
Note:To reduce fogging of the windshieldduring humid weather, adjust the airdistribution control to the windshield airvents position. Increase the temperatureand fan speed to improve clearing, ifrequired.
Note:To reduce humidity build-up insideyour vehicle, do not drive with the systemswitched off or with recirculated air alwaysswitched on.
Note:Do not place objects under the frontseats as this may interfere with the airflowto the rear seats.
Note:Remove any snow, ice or leaves fromthe air intake area at the base of thewindshield.

Note:You may feel a small amount of airfrom the floor air vents regardless of the airdistribution setting.
During extreme high ambient temperatureswhen idling stationary for extended periodsin gear, it is recommended to run the A/Cin the MAX A/C mode, adjust the blowerfan speed to the lowest setting and putthe vehicle’s transmission into position Pto continue to receive cool air from yourA/C system.
For maximum cooling performance inAUTO (automatic climate system) orpanel mode, press MAX A/C.
For maximum cooling performance inpanel and floor mode:
1. Adjust the temperature control to thecoolest setting.
2. Select A/C and recirculated air toprovide colder airflow.
3. Set the fan to the highest speedinitially, and then adjust to maintaincomfort.
To aid in side window defogging anddemisting in cold or humid weather:
1. Select the floor and panel mode.
2. Press A/C.
3. Adjust the temperature control tomaintain comfort.
4. Set the fan speed to the highestsetting.
5.Direct the outer instrument panel ventstoward the side windows.
6. To increase airflow to the outerinstrument panel vents, close the ventslocated in the middle of the instrumentpanel.
HEATED WINDOWS AND
MIRRORS
Heated Rear Window (If Equipped)
Note:The engine must be running to usethis feature.
Note:If your vehicle is equipped with asliding rear window, the feature stilloperates when you open the window.
Press the button to clear the rear windowof thin ice and fog. Press the button againwithin 10 minutes to switch it off. Itswitches off automatically after 10minutes, or when you switch the ignitionoff.
Do not use razor blades or other sharpobjects to clean the inside of the rearwindow or to remove decals from theinside of the rear window. This maycause damage to the heated grid lines.Your warranty does not cover thisdamage.
Heated Exterior Mirror (If Equipped)
Note:Do not remove ice from the mirrorswith a scraper or attempt to readjust themirror glass that has frozen in place. Theseactions could cause damage to the glassand mirrors.
Note:Do not clean the housing or glass ofany mirror with harsh abrasives, fuel or otherpetroleum-based cleaning products.
The heated mirrors remove ice, mist andfog when you switch on the heated rearwindow.
REMOTE START (IF EQUIPPED)
The climate control system adjusts thecabin temperature during remote start.

You cannot adjust the system duringremote start operation. Turn the ignitionon to return the system to its previoussettings. You can now make adjustments.You will need to turn certainvehicle-dependent features back on, suchas:
•heated seats
•cooled seats
•heated steering wheel
•heated mirrors
•heated rear window.
You can adjust the settings using theinformation display controls. SeeInformation Displays (page 81).
Automatic Settings
You can set the climate control to operatein AUTO mode through the informationdisplay setting: Remote Start > ClimateControl > Heater-A/C > Auto. The climatecontrol system automatically sets theinterior temperature to 72°F (22°C).
In hot weather, the system is set to 72°F(22°C). Cooled seats are set to high (ifavailable, and selected to AUTO in theinformation display).
In moderate weather, the system eitherheats or cools (based on previoussettings). The rear defroster, heatedmirrors, heated seats and cooled seats donot automatically turn on.
In cold weather, the system is set to 72°F(22°C). The heated seats and heatedsteering wheel are set to high (if available,and selected to AUTO in the informationdisplay). The rear defroster and heatedmirrors automatically turn on.
Heated and Cooled Devices
The climate control system controls otherheated and cooled devices inside thevehicle. You can switch these devices on(if available, and selected to AUTO in theinformation displays) during remote start.Heated devices usually switch on duringcold weather, and cooled devices duringhot weather. If your vehicle is equippedwith a diesel engine and a supplementalheater, the supplemental heater also turnson.

Do not crank the engine for more than 10seconds at a time as starter damage mayoccur. If the engine fails to start, turn thekey to off and wait 30 seconds beforetrying again.
Do not use starting fluid such as ether inthe air intake system. Such fluid couldcause immediate explosive damage to theengine and possible personal injury.
If you should experience cold weatherstarting problems on E85 ethanol, andneither an alternative brand of E85 ethanolnor an engine block heater is available, theaddition of unleaded gasoline to your tankimproves cold starting performance. Yourvehicle is designed to operate on E85ethanol alone, unleaded gasoline alone, orany mixture of the two.
If the Engine Fails to Start Using thePreceding Instructions (Flexible FuelVehicles Only)
1. Press and hold down the acceleratorone-third to one-half the way to thefloor, then crank the engine.
2. When the engine starts, release thekey, then gradually release theaccelerator pedal as the engine speedsup. If the engine still fails to start,repeat Step 1.
Guarding Against Exhaust Fumes
WARNING
If you smell exhaust fumes insideyour vehicle, have your vehiclechecked by your authorized dealerimmediately. Do not drive your vehicle ifyou smell exhaust fumes. Carbonmonoxide is present in exhaust fumes.Take precautions to avoid its dangerouseffects.
Important Ventilating Information
If you stop your vehicle and the leave theengine idling for long periods of time, werecommend that you do one of thefollowing:
•Open the windows at least 1 inch (2.5centimeters)
•Set your climate control to outside air.
ENGINE BLOCK HEATER (IF
EQUIPPED)
WARNINGS
Failure to follow engine block heaterinstructions could result in propertydamage or serious personal injury.
Do not use your heater withungrounded electrical systems ortwo-pronged adapters. There is a riskof electrical shock.
Note:The heater is most effective whenoutdoor temperatures are below 0°F(-18°C).
The heater acts as a starting aid bywarming the engine coolant. This allowsthe climate control system to respondquickly. The equipment includes a heaterelement (installed in the engine block) anda wire harness. You can connect thesystem to a grounded 120-volt ACelectrical source.
We recommend that you do the followingfor a safe and correct operation:
•Use a 16-gauge outdoor extension cordthat is product certified byUnderwriter’s Laboratory (UL) orCanadian Standards Association(CSA). This extension cord must besuitable for use outdoors, in cold

Starting and Stopping the Engine

It is acceptable to have your two-wheeldrive vehicle towed with the front wheelson the ground (without dollies) and therear wheels off the ground.
We recommend towing a four-wheel drivevehicle with all wheels off the ground, suchas using a wheel lift and dollies or flatbedequipment. However, it is acceptable touse a wheel lift to raise the rear of yourvehicle so long as, depending on vehicleconfiguration, you perform the followingbefore towing:
•If your vehicle is equipped with amanual-shift transfer case, make surethe front wheel hub locks are in theFREE position before towing.
•If your vehicle is equipped with anelectronic shift-on-the-fly transfercase, make sure you turn thefour-wheel drive control to the 2Hposition before towing.
Note:Towing an electronic shift-on-the-flyfour-wheel drive vehicle with the frontwheels on the ground without disengagingthe front hubs may cause damage to theautomatic transmission.
Note:Towing a two-wheel drive vehicle oran electronic shift-on-the-fly four-wheeldrive vehicle with the rear wheels on theground for more than 50 miles (80 km) orfaster than 35 mph (56 km/h) may causedamage to the automatic transmission.
Note:Using wheel lift equipment to tow adual rear wheel vehicle requires removingan outer rear wheel before towing.
TOWING THE VEHICLE ON
FOUR WHEELS
Emergency Towing
If your vehicle becomes inoperable(without access to wheel dollies,car-hauling trailer, or flatbed transportvehicle), it can be flat-towed (all wheelson the ground, regardless of the powertrainand transmission configuration) under thefollowing conditions:
•Your vehicle is facing forward fortowing in a forward direction.
•Place the transmission in position N. Ifyou cannot move the transmission intoN, you may need to override it. SeeTransmission (page 142).
•Maximum speed is 35 mph (56 km/h).
•Maximum distance is 50 miles (80kilometers).
Recreational Towing
Note:Put your climate control system inrecirculated air mode to prevent exhaustfumes from entering your vehicle. SeeClimate Control (page 103).
Follow these guidelines if you have a needfor recreational towing, such as towingyour vehicle behind a motorhome. Wedesigned these guidelines to preventdamage to your transmission.
Two-wheel Drive Vehicles andFour-wheel Drive Vehicles Equippedwith an Electronic-shift Transfer Case
Do not tow your vehicle with any wheelson the ground, as vehicle or transmissiondamage may occur. It is recommended totow your vehicle with all four (4) wheelsoff the ground, such as when using acar-hauling trailer. Otherwise, you cannottow your vehicle.
