Malfunction Indicator Light (If installed)
This light illuminates when there is a malfunction of an exhaust gas related component, and thesystem is not functioning properly so that theexhaust gas regulation values are not satisfied.This light will also illuminate when the ignition keyis turned to the "ON" position, and will go out afterengine starting. If it illuminates while driving, ordoes not illuminate when the ignition key isturned to the "ON" position, take your car to yournearest authorized Hyundai dealer and have thesystem checked.
B260E01HP-GAT Seat Belt Warning Light (If Installed)
The seat belt warning light blinks for about 6 seconds when the ignition key is turned from the"OFF" position to "ON" or "START".

Cruise Indicator (If Installed)
The cruise indicator light in the instrument cluster is illuminated when the cruise control main switchon the end of the barrel is pushed.The indicator light does not illuminate when thecruise control main switch is pushed a secondtime.Information about the use of cruise control isbeginning on page 1-46.indicator stays on, take your car to your autho- rized Hyundai dealer and have the systemchecked. See section 2 for more informationabout the TCS.

B540A01F-AAT TAIL GATE Remote Tail Gate Release To open the tail gate without using the key, pull up
the lid release lever located on the driver's doorpanel.To close, lower the tail gate, then press down on
it until it locks. To be sure the tail gate is securelyfastened, always try to pull it up again. WARNING: The tail gate should always be kept complete-ly closed while the vehicle is in motion. If it isleft open or ajar, poisonous exhaust gasesmay enter the car resulting in serious illnessor death to the occupants. See additionalwarnings concerning exhaust gases on page2-1.

eling, always stop the engine and never allowsparks or open flames near the filler area. Ifyou need to replace the filler cap, use agenuine Hyundai replacement part.If you open the fuel filler cap during highambient temperatures, a slight "pressuresound" may be heard. This is normal and nota cause for concern.Whenever you open the fuel filler cap, turn itslowly.

B560A01A-AAT REMOTE FUEL-FILLER LID RELEASE The fuel-filler lid may be opened from inside the vehicle by pulling up on the fuel-filler lid opener
located on the front floor area on the left side ofthe car. NOTE: If the fuel-filler lid will not open because ice
has formed around it, tap lightly or push onthe lid to break the ice and release the lid. Donot pry on the lid. If necessary, spray aroundthe lid with an approved de-icer fluid (do notuse radiator anti-freeze) or move the vehicleto a warm place and allow the ice to melt.

o Engine Oil and Filter The engine oil and filter should be changed at
the intervals specified in the maintenance sched- ule. If the car is being driven in severe condi-tions, more frequent oil and filter changes arerequired.

o Drive Belts Inspect all drive belts for evidence of cuts,
cracks, excessive wear or oil saturation andreplace if necessary. Drive belts should bechecked periodically for proper tension andadjusted as necessary.

o Fuel Filter
A clogged filter can limit the speed at which the
vehicle may be driven, damage the emissionsystem and cause hard starting. If an exces-sive amount of foreign matter accumulates inthe fuel tank, the filter may require replacementmore frequently.
After installing a new filter, run the engine for
several minutes, and check for leaks at theconnections. Fuel filters should be installed bytrained technicians. F060D01A-AAT
o Fuel Lines, Fuel Hoses and Connec-
tions
Check the fuel lines, fuel hoses and connec-
tions for leakage and damage. Have a trainedtechnician replace any damaged or leaking partsimmediately.

o Timing Belt Inspect all parts related to the timing belt for
damage and deformation. Replace any dam-aged parts immediately.

o Vapor Hose and Fuel Filler cap The vapor hose and fuel filler cap should be
inspected at those intervals specified in themaintenance schedule. Make sure that a newvapor hose or fuel filler cap is correctly re-placed.

o Vacuum, Crankcase
Ventilation Hoses
Inspect the surface of hoses for evidence of
heat and/or mechanical damage. Hard and brit-tle rubber, cracking, tears, cuts, abrasions, andexcessive swelling indicate deterioration. Par-ticular attention should be paid to examiningthose hose surfaces nearest to high heat sourc-es, such as the exhaust manifold. Inspect the hose routing to assure that the
hoses do not come in contact with any heatsource, sharp edges or moving componentwhich might cause heat damage or mechanicalwear. Inspect all hose connections, such asclamps and couplings, to make sure they aresecure, and that no leaks are present. Hosesshould be replaced immediately if there is anyevidence of deterioration or damage.

A Genuine Hyundai air cleaner filter is recom-
mended when the filter is replaced.

correct heat range.

o Valve Clearance Inspect excessive valve noise and/or engine
vibration and adjust if necessary. A qualifiedtechnician should perform the operation.

check to be sure the drain cocks are fully closed and not leaking.
WARNING: The cooling fan is controlled by engine cool- ant temperature and may sometimes oper-ate even when the engine is not running.Use extreme caution when working near theblades of the coolant fan so that you are notinjured by a rotating fan blade. Your engine was originally equipped with plati- num-tipped spark plugs. (For 2.7L only). Platinum-tipped spark plugs will last longer than conventional type spark plugs and can be iden-tified by blue lines on the ceramic shell. NOTE: Do not clean or regap platinum-tipped spark plugs.

Replacing the Spark Plugs The spark plugs should be changed at the
intervals specified in the vehicle maintenanceschedule in Section 5 or whenever engine per-formance indicates they should be changed.Symptoms that suggest poor spark plug perfor-mance include engine misfiring under load, lossof fuel economy, poor acceleration, etc. Whenspark plugs are replaced, always use sparkplugs recommended by Hyundai. The use ofother spark plugs can result in loss of perfor-mance, radio interference or engine damage.
NOTE: When replacing the spark plugs, genuine
Hyundai replacement parts are recom- mended. Recommended Spark Plugs:

To Change the Engine Coolant
The engine coolant should be changed at those
intervals specified in the vehicle maintenance schedule in Section 5.
NOTE: Engine coolant can damage the finish of
your car. If you spill engine coolant on the car, wash it off thoroughly with clean water.
1. Park the car on level ground, set the park- ing brake and remove the radiator cap when cool.
2. Be sure your drain receptacle is in place. Open the drain cock on the radiator. Allowall the engine coolant to drain from thecooling system, then securely close the draincock.
3. Check Section 9 for the capacity of the cooling system in your car. Then, followingthe manufacturer's directions on the enginecoolant container, add the appropriate quan-tity of engine coolant to the radiator.
4. Turn the radiator cap counterclockwise with- out pressing down on it, until it stops. Thisrelieves any pressure remaining in the cool-ing system. And remove the radiator cap bypushing down and turning counterclockwise. Now fill the radiator with clean demineral- ized or distilled water. Continue to add cleandemineralized or distilled water in small quan-tities until the fluid level stays up in theradiator neck. DOHC1.0~1.1 mm (0.039 ~ 0.043 in.)

1. Crankcase Emission Control Sys-
tem
The positive crankcase ventilation system is
employed to prevent air pollution caused by H010A01A-GAT
EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEMS (If Installed)
Your Hyundai is equipped with an emission
control system to meet all requirements of the Emission prohibition rules of your province.
There are three emission control systems which
are as follows.
(1) Crankcase emission control system (2) Evaporative emission control system(3) Exhaust emission control system In order to assure the proper function of the
emission control systems, it is recommended that you have your car inspected and main-tained by an authorized Hyundai dealer in ac-cordance with the maintenance schedule in thismanual. H010C01F-GAT
2. Evaporative Emission Control Sys-
tem (If Installed)
The evaporative emission control system is
designed to prevent fuel vapors from escapinginto the atmosphere. Canister
While the engine is inoperative, fuel vapors
generated inside the fuel tank are absorbed and stored in the canister. When the engine is
running, the fuel vapors absorbed in the canis-ter are drawn into the induction system throughthe purge control solenoid valve. Purge Control Solenoid Valve
The purge control solenoid valve is controlled
by the ECM; when the engine coolant tempera- ture is low, and during idling, it closes, so that
evaporated fuel is not taken into the engine.After engine warm-up, during ordinary driving, itopens so as to introduce evaporated fuel to theengine. H010D01A-AAT
3. Exhaust Emission Control System
The exhaust emission control system is a high-
ly effective system which controls exhaust emis-sions while maintaining good vehicleperformace.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER (If Installed)
Catalytic Converter
SSA7020A
The catalytic converter is part of the exhaust
emission control system. Its purpose is to re- move certain engine emission products fromthe engine's exhaust. It looks something like amuffler and is located underneath the car in theexhaust system.
blow-by gases being emitted from the crank-
case. This system supplies fresh air to the
crankcase through the air cleaner. Inside thecrankcase, the fresh air mixes with blow-bygases, then passes through the PCV valve intothe induction system.

1- 46 SB450A2-E HATCHBACK DOOR Remote Hatchback door Release The hatchback door may be opened by pulling the lever to release the lock. The hatchback doorshould be closed by depressing the lid firmly untilthe latch engages. Ensure that hatchback door issecurely latched before setting the vehicle inmotion. WARNING: The hatchback door should always be closedwhilst the vehicle is in motion to preventexhaust gases from being drawn into thepassenger compartment.

SB440A1-E REMOTE FUEL FILLER LID RELEASE (Not all models) The fuel filler lid may be opened from inside the vehicle by pulling up on the fuel filler lid release. When releasing the filler cap, asmall amount of residual pressure may gen-erate a slight hissing sound which is notindicative of an abnormality. In the event ofthe fuel filler cap requiring replacement, onlya Genuine Hyundai replacement part shouldbe used to prevent fuel leakage.

3-2 4. Check to see if the water pump drive belt is
missing. If it is not missing, check to see that it is tight. If the drive belt seems to be satisfac-tory, check for coolant leaking from the radia-tor, hoses or under the car. (If the air condi-tioning had been in use, it is normal for coldwater to be draining from it).
WARNING:Whilst the engine is running, keep hands andclothing away from moving parts such as thefan and drive belts to prevent injury.
5. If the water pump drive belt is broken or coolant is leaking out, stop the engine imme- diately and call the nearest Hyundai dealerfor assistance.
WARNING:Do not remove the radiator cap when theengine is hot since steam and boiling watermay be ejected from the radiator resulting inburns or scalding.
6. If the cause of the overheating cannot be found, wait until the engine temperature has returned to normal. Then, if coolant has beenlost, carefully remove the radiator cap andadd water to bring the fluid level in the reser-voir up to the base of the radiator fill opening.Fill the coolant expansion tank to the halfwaymark.
WARNING:Motor vehicle batteries contain sulphuric acidand emit hydrogen gas. Protective clothingshould be worn and care exercised to preventthe acid from coming into contact with skin orclothing and the vehicle. Naked lights shouldnot be permitted in the vicinity of the battery.Care should be exercised to prevent sparksoccurring during connection. If acid acciden-tally comes into contact with skin or eyes, theaffected area should immediately be flushedwith copious amounts of water and medicalassistance sought.
1. Ensure that the booster battery is 12 volt type.
If the booster battery is installed in another vehicle, ensure that the two vehicles are nottouching.
2. Turn off all unnecessary electrical equipment in both vehicles.
3. Ensure that the engine of the vehicle provid- ing the jump start is running prior to connec-tion of the jump cables.
4. Connect the red jump cable to the positive (+) terminal of the booster battery and the otherend to the positive (+) terminal of the dis-charged battery.
5. Attach the black jump cable to the negative (-) terminal of the booster battery, and theother end to a ground point within the enginecompartment of the vehicle with the flat bat-tery. Do not connect to the negative batteryterminal of the flat battery since sparks maybe generated with the subsequent risk ofexplosion. 6. Raise the booster vehicle engine speed to
2,000 r.p.m. and start the engine of the vehi-cle with the flat battery.
7. Remove jump cables in the reverse order of installation (black cable first).
CAUTION:If the jump cable is incorrectly installed, dam-age to the vehicle electrical system may oc-cur, in particular the electronic componentssuch as the Fuel Injection system computerand the Automatic Transaxle computer. Thebattery must never be disconnected whilstthe engine is running. SD040A1-E IF THE ENGINE OVERHEATSIf the temperature gauge indicates overheating:
1. Pull off the road and stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
2. Place the gear selector lever in "P" (auto- matic), or neutral (manual transaxle) and set the parking brake. If the air conditioning is on,turn it off.
3. If coolant is running out under the car or steam is coming out from under the bonnetstop the engine. Do not open the bonnet untilthe coolant has stopped running or the steam-ing has stopped. If there is no visible loss ofcoolant and no steam, leave the engine run-ning and check to be sure the engine coolingfan is operating.If the fan is not running, turn the engine off.
