C020A01O-EAT BEFORE STARTING THE EN- GINE Before you start the engine, you should always:
1. Look around the vehicle to be sure
there are no flat tyres, puddles of oil or water or other indications of pos- sible trouble.
2. After entering the car, check to be
sure the parking brake is engaged.
3. Check that all windows, and lights are clean.
4. Check that the interior and exterior
mirrors are clean and in position.
5. Check your seat, seatback and
headrestraint to be sure they are intheir proper positions.
6. Close all the doors.
7. Fasten your seat belt and be sure
that all other occupants have fas- tened theirs.
8. Turn off all lights and accessories that are not needed.
9. When you turn the ignition switch to "ON" check that all appropriate warn-ing lights are operating and that youhave sufficient fuel. 10.Check the operation of warning
lights and all bulbs when key is inthe "ON" position.
WARNING: (DIESEL ENGINE)
To ensure that sufficient vacuum exists within the brake system dur-ing cold weather start-up condi-tions, it is necessary to run theengine at idle for several seconds after starting the engine. SC040A1-F COMBINATION IGNITION SWITCH AND STEERING LOCK To Start the Engine
o If your Hyundai is equipped with a
manual transaxle, place the shift lever in neutral and depress theclutch pedal fully.
o If your Hyundai has an automatic
transaxle, place the shift lever in "P" (park).
o To start the engine, insert the igni-
tion key and turn it to the "START" position. Release it as soon as theengine starts. Do not hold the key inthe "START" position for more that 15 seconds.
NOTE: For safety, the engine will not start if the shift lever is not in "P" or "N"Position (automatic transaxle).

1. Ensure that the transaxle is in neu- tral and that the clutch pedal is held depressed (manual transaxle) or thetransaxle selector is at the "P" posi-tion (automatic transaxle vehicle).
2. Turn the ignition key to and hold at
the "Start" position until the enginestarts. When the engine has started,release the key.

SC090D1-F To Remove the Ignition Key
1. Turn the ignition key to the "ACC"
position.
2. Simultaneously push and turn the ignition key counterclockwise from the "ACC" posi-tion to the "LOCK"position.
3. The key can be removed in the
"LOCK" position.LOCK

START NOTE: Do not operate the starter for more than 15 seconds continuously orcontinue to operate the starter afterthe engine has started to avoid dam-aging the starter motor. If the en-gine makes a false start, allow it and the starter motor to come to rest before attempting to start the en-gine again. Never attempt to startthe engine with the transaxle ingear. Do not depress the accelera-tor pedal whilst starting the engine. Allow the engine to idle for 20 sec- onds or so before driving the ve-hicle.
CAUTION:
Do not leave the vehicle unattended whilst idling. Never allow the ve- hicle to idle or warm up in a con-fined space (ie garage) longer thanis necessary to move the vehicleinto an open area.

NOTE: If the engine were not started 10 seconds after the preheating is com- pleted, turn the ignition key oncemore to the "LOCK" position, andthen to the "ON" position, in orderto preheat again.

o Turn the ignition key to position
"ON" and wait for the pre-heat indi-cator light to go out.
o Operate the starter until the engine runs.
ENGINE WARMOperate the starter. If the engine doesnot respond on the first attempt, waitseveral seconds and try again using the pre-heat. C050B02S-GAT NORMAL CONDITIONS The Starting Procedure:
1. Insert key, and fasten the seat belt.
2. Depress the clutch pedal fully and
place the gearshift lever (manualtransaxle) in neutral or the selector lever (automatic transaxle) in "P" (park) position.
3. After turning the ignition key to the
"ON" position, make certain all warn-ing lights and gauges are function-ing properly before starting the en- gine.
4. On vehicles equipped with the die-
sel preheat indicator light, turn the ignition key to the "ON" position.The diesel pre-heat indicator lightwill first illuminate in amber, and then after a short time, the amber illumination will go off, indicatingthat preheating is completed.

C055B01B-GAT STARTING AND STOPPING THE ENGINE FOR TURBO CHARGER INTERCOOLER (DIESEL EN-GINE)
(1) Do not race the engine or sudden
accelerate the engine immediately after start it. If the engine is cold,allow the engine to idle for severalseconds before it is driven to en-sure sufficient lubrication of the turbo charger unit.
(2) After high speed or extended driv- ing, requiring a heavy engine load, the engine should be allowed to idleabout 1 minute before turning it off.This idle time will allow the turbo charger to cool prior to shutting the engine off.
WARNING:
Do not turn the engine off immedi-ately after it has been subjected to a heavy load. Doing so may cause severe damage to the engine orturbo charger unit.
WARNING:
Be sure that the clutch is fully de-pressed when starting a manualtransaxle vehicle. Otherwise thereis the potential to cause damage tothe vehicle or injury to someone inside or outside the vehicle as a result of the forward or backwardmovement of the vehicle that willoccur if the clutch is not depressedwhen the vehicle is started. SC060B1-E FUEL ECONOMY The following suggestions are made to assist in achieving the greatest degreeof fuel economy.
o Maintaining a constant check on
fuel consumption will enable the most economical use pattern anddriving style to be adopted.
o Avoid using the vehicle for very short journeys if possible, particu-larly when a cold start is involved.
o Ensure that tyre pressures are main-
tained at the correct level.
o Use only the recommended grade
of fuel.
o Avoid carrying unnecessary weight,
and if a roof rack is in use, remove it as soon as possible after use.
o Anticipate the road and conditions ahead to enable adjustments in speed to be made smoothly. Avoidheavy acceleration and sharp brak-ing.
o Avoid cruising at unnecessary high
speeds.
5. Turn the ignition key to the "Start"
position and release it when theengine starts.

o Do not attempt to engage reverse gear when the car is in motion.
o To avoid damaging the selector mechanism, do not use the gear shift lever as a hand rest. Releasethe lever immediately the shift iscompleted.
o To avoid premature clutch wear,
do not use the clutch pedal as afoot rest, and do not hold thevehicle on a gradient using theclutch.
o Ensure that the engine is not over-revved by upshifting beforethe tachometer needle enters thered zone.
o Do not coast with the shift lever at the neutral position.
o When descending long gradi- ents, make use of the engine brak-ing to assist the footbrake toavoid brake fade or over-heating.
o When slippery conditions are en- countered, increased cautionshould be exercised when gear changing, braking or accelerat-

It is importantthat when changing gear, the clutchpedal is fully depressed to avoidtransaxle damage. ing. Abrupt changes in speedmay cause a loss of traction orcontrol of the vehicle.
o During cold weather, shifting may be difficult until the transaxle lu-bricant has warmed up. This isnormal and not harmful to thetransaxle.
o If you 've come to a complete
stop and it's hard to shift into 1st or R(Reverse), put the shift lever in N(Neutral) position and releasethe clutch. Press the clutch pedalback down, and then shift into1st or R(Reverse) gear position.
o Do not use the shift lever as a handrest during driving, as thiscan result in premature wear ofthe transaxle shift forks.
o Always ensure that the periodic
maintenance services are performedby a Hyundai authorised repairer atthe time and/or mileage intervalsspecified.
o Use the air conditioning only when
necessary.

SC090B1-F Using the Clutch The clutch should be pressed all the way to the floor before shifting, thenreleased slowly. Do not rest your footon the clutch pedal while driving.This can cause unnecessary wear. Do not partially engage the clutch to hold the car on an incline. This causesunnecessary wear.Use the parking brake to hold the caron an incline. Do not operate the clutchpedal rapidly and repeatedly.

C090A01A-GAT AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE
The highly efficient Hyundai automatic transaxle has four forward speeds and one reverse speed. It has a conven- tional shift pattern as shown in theillustration. At night, with the first posi-tion of the multi-function switch, theappropriate symbol on the shift patternindicator will be illuminated according to the range selected. CAUTION:
Never shift into "R" or "P" positionwhile the vehicle is moving. NOTE:
Depress the brake pedal and push the button when shift-ing. Push the button when shift- ing. The selector lever can be shifted freely.
For optimum fuel economy, acceler-ate gradually. The transaxle will auto- matically shift to the second, third and overdrive gears.

!WARNING:
ABS will not prevent accidents due to improper or dangerous drivingmaneuvers. Even though vehicle control is improved during emer- gency braking, always maintain asafe distance between you and ob-jects ahead. Vehicle speeds shouldalways be reduced during extremeroad conditions. The braking distance for cars equipped with an anti-lock brakingsystem may be longer than for thosewithout it in the following road con-ditions.
o Driving on rough, gravel or snow- covered roads.
o Driving with tyre chains installed.
o Driving on roads where the road
surface is pitted or has differentsurface height. These roads should be driven at reduced speeds. The safety features of an ABS equipped vehicle shouldnot be tested by high speed drivingor cornering. This could endangerthe safety of yourself or others. SC150A1-F DRIVING FOR ECONOMY You can save fuel and get more miles from your car if you follow these sug-gestions:
o Drive smoothly. Accelerate at a
moderate rate. Don't make "jack- rabbit" starts or full-throttle shiftsand maintain a steady cruisingspeed. Don't race between stop-lights. Try to adjust your speed tothat of the other traffic so you don't have to change speeds unneces- sarily.Avoid heavy traffic whenever pos-sible. Always maintain a safe dis-tance from other vehicles so youcan avoid unnecessary braking. This also reduces brake wear. o Drive at a moderate speed. The
faster you drive, the more fuel your car uses. Driving at a moderatespeed, especially on the highway, isone of the most effective ways to reduce fuel consumption.
o Don't "ride" the brake or clutch pedal. This can increase fuel consumption and also increase wear on thesecomponents. In addition, driving withyour foot resting on the brake pedal may cause the brakes to overheat, which reduces their effectivenessand may lead to more serious con-sequences.
o Take care of your tyres. Keep them inflated to the recommended pres- sure. Incorrect infla-tion, either too much or too little, results in unnec-essary tyre wear. Check the tyrepressures at least once a month.
o Be sure that the wheels are aligned correctly. Improper alignment can result from hitting curbs or driving too fast over irregular surfaces. Pooralignment causes faster tyre wearand may also result in other prob-lems as well as greater fuel con-sumption.

The use of a proprietary stabiliser will assist in achieving an inherently stableoutfit but whilst the use of such equip-ment will improve the characteristicsof a balanced outfit, it will not compen- sate for a badly loaded and therefore unstable outfit. The tyres and braking equipment fitted to the trailer or caravan must be main-tained in accordance with the recom- mendations of the manufacturer. Spe- cial attention should be paid to tyreswhich deteriorate through time andexposure rather than as a result of thedistances towed. The inside walls ofthe tyres should be inspected along with the outside walls for cracking and damage. The trailer wheel nut torquemust be checked on a regular basis,preferably before each towing ses-sion. The trailer hitch and the safety catch mechanism must be maintained in goodworking order. The trailer break awaycable or chain should be inspected fordamage and should be attached to thevehicle towing attachment each and every time the trailer is hitched to the vehicle. Whilst towing, the performance of thevehicle will be reduced in terms ofacceleration, braking and handling dueto the increased loads placed upon thevehicle. The driver should anticipate the change in characteristics and ad- just the driving style in keeping withthese changes. Care should be exer-cised when cornering and braking toprevent the outfit becoming uncontrol-lable by reducing cornering speeds and allowing increased braking dis- tances. The driver should exercise care to ensure that when pulling away fromrest particularly on uphill gradients the clutch unit is not subjected to exces- sive slippage which will reduce theuseful life of this component. Use ofthe "Overdrive Off" "2" and "L" posi-tions when driving vehicles with auto-matic transmission will assist with brak- ing performance when long down hill gradients are encountered. Improvedacceleration performance will be avail-able by selecting "Overdrive Off","2",or "1" depending upon road speed if itis found that the transmission unit makes an undesirable upshift whilst hill climbing or overtaking. The trans- mission unit should be operated in "D"with the Overdrive "On" under normalcircumstances to enhance fueleconomy and reduce noise and en-gine wear.
CAUTION:
The use of a badly loaded or over-loaded trailer may result in instabil- ity. This following specifications arerecommended when towing atrailer. The loaded trailer weight orthe Gross Train Weight must notexceed the values in the following chart .

3- 2 WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY

SD020B1-E IF THE ENGINE CANNOT BE CRANKED
1. If the vehicle is fitted with manual
transaxle, ensure that the clutch pedal is depressed whilst cranking the engine. If the vehicle is fitted with automatic transaxle, ensurethat the transaxle selector is at the "P" or"N" position.
2. Check the battery terminals and
connections to ensure that theseare clean and also tight.
3. If the ignition warning lights dim
when the engine is cranked and thebattery terminals have been checked, a discharged battery isindicated. SD020C1-F If Engine Turns Over Normally but Does Not Start
SD020A1-E IF THE ENGINE WILL NOT START Seek assistance from the nearest Hyundai authorised repairer with re- gard to the method of ignition and fuelsystem diagnosis.

CAUTION:
If the engine refuses to start, no attempt should be made to push or tow start the vehicle. Vehicles withautomatic transaxle or fuel injec- tion will not be able to be started in this manner since no drive is trans-mitted through the automatic transaxle whilst the engine is not running, and in the case of fuelinjected derivatives, the fuel pump will not operate under tow start conditions. In addition, if the ve-hicle is equipped with an exhaust catalyst, damage to the catalyst may result if the vehicle is tow started. 4. Do not attempt to push or tow start
the vehicle, refer to "Jump Starting"for information regarding enginestarting when the battery is dis- charged.

3. Check fuel line in the engine com- partment.
4. If engine still refuses to start, call a
Hyundai authorised repairer or seek other qualified assistance.
