NOTE
After an ECU reset, the ignition switch must be
turned Off for at least 10 seconds and then
turned On for at least one minute, before
attempting communication between Tech 2 and
the ECU.
Preconditions: The four digit security code must be entered into Tech 2 and the theft deterrent system
must be disarmed and the ignition switched ‘On’ with a programmed remote coded key.
F2: Fuel Trim Reset : This function resets the fuel trim data values learned by the ECM.
F3: Throttle Body Relearn : In this mode, Tech 2 commands the throttle plate from its rest position to full closed
then to about 10% open. This procedure takes approximately 6 – 8 seconds. At the start of this procedure,
the Tech 2, ‘Electronic Throttle Control Learn Counter’ parameter should display ‘0’ then count up to 11, after
the procedure is completed. If the counter does not start at ‘0’, nor display a count of ‘11’ at the conclusion of
the procedure, a fault has occurred and a DTC will set.

Reinstall
Reinstallation of the engine control module (ECM) is the reverse of the removal procedure, noting the following:
NOTE
During installation of the ECM, the
SICHTMUSTER ME 9.6 label (1) is positioned at
the top right-hand corner.
1 Reinstall ECM attaching bolts and tighten to the correct torque specification.

3 Reinstall the main vehicle wiring harness connector, and engine wiring harness connector, ensuring the connector locking lever is fully seated, refer to Figure 6C1-3 – 15.
4 If the ECM has been replaced, perform the following procedures:
• ECM service programming, 6E1 Powertrain Interface Module – V6.
• ECM / PIM / ICU security link, refer to 6E1 Powertrain Interface Module – V6.
• Main diagnostic table functional check, refer to 6C1-2 Engine Management – V6 – Diagnostics.
5 If the ECM has been removed, but not replaced, perform the main diagnostic table functional check, refer to 6C1-2 Engine Management – V6 – Diagnostics.
6 Start the vehicle and allow to idle.
ECM Reset

Do not perform the reset procedure within
sixty seconds of turning the ignition on.
Failure to comply may result in the ECM
failing to reset.
W hen an ECM is installed onto a vehicle, it is security linked to the Immobiliser Control Unit (ICU) and powertrain
interface module (PIM). Once this linking has been performed, the ECM cannot be installed in any other vehicle unless
the security linking between the ICU and the PIM has been reset using the following procedure.
NOTE
Prior to resetting the ECM, obtain the Security
Code. This information is found on the vehicle
security card issued with the vehicle when new.
For further information on the vehicle security
card, refer to 6E1 Powertrain Interface Module –
V6.
1 Connect Tech 2 to the data link connector (DLC) and turn the ignition on.
2 On Tech 2 select Engine / V6 Engine / Programming / Reset ECU .

When Tech 2 requests programming approval,
obtain TIS approval.
3 W hen Tech 2 displays Enter Security Code, enter the security code, press the Enter key and then the Okay soft
key.

The engine will not start after the ECM has
been reset.
4 W hen Tech 2 displays Do you really want to Reset? , press the Reset soft key.
5 W hen Tech 2 displays Stop Engine - Turn Off Ignition , turn the ignition off and press the Confirm soft key.
6 W hen Tech 2 displays Turn Ignition On, turn the ignition on and press the Confirm soft key.
7 W hen Tech 2 displays Reset Completed Successfully , press the Confirm soft key to return to the Tech 2
Programming screen.
2.8 Engine Control Module Bracket Assembly
Remove
1 Remove the engine control module (ECM), refer to 2.7 Engine Control Module.
2 Remove the bolt (1) and the two bolts (2), attaching the ECM bracket assembly (3) to the front engine
cover and remove.

1 General Information
A powertrain interface module (PIM) is fitted that incorporates the following functionality:
• Communication protocol between the engine control module (ECM) and transmission control module (TCM) is
General Motors Local Area Network (GM LAN).
• Communication protocol between the PIM and immobiliser control unit is keyword 2000.
• ECM to PIM and PIM to immobiliser control unit (ICU) authentication for vehicle security.
• The following switches, where fitted, input directly into the PIM:
• Automatic transmission power mode switch.
• Automatic transmission 3
rd gear start switch.
• Cruise control switch.
1.1 General Description
Serial Data Communication
The various electronic control modules communicate with each other through the serial data bus. The ECM and TCM
communicate on the serial data bus using the GM LAN communication protocol. Figure 6E1 – 2 shows the serial data
layout.
NOTE
Serial data components shown in Figure 6E1 – 2
will vary depending on vehicle options.
Bus
A bus is a physical circuit or circuits which provides a communication path between two or more control modules.
GM LAN Serial Data Bus
The GM LAN bus is a two wire circuit (1), refer to Figure 6E1 – 1. The GM LAN bus circuits are terminated with cut-off
resistors (2) which are located inside the two control modules at either end of the bus circuit. The purpose of these cut-off
resistors is to prevent data from returning as an echo after reaching the end of the GM LAN bus circuit.
NOTE
• For illustration purposes, the cut-off resistors
are shown outside of the control modules.
• The two control modules with the cut-off
resistors are the PIM and the ECM.

3.2 Powertrain Interface Module Gateway
Components
Engine Control Module
The ECM is located at the right front of the engine
assembly.
The ECM communicates directly with the transmission
control module (TCM) and PIM via the serial data network.
The ECM is also an integral part of the vehicle security
system. For further information on vehicle security, refer to
11A Immobiliser System.

Immobiliser Control Unit
The immobiliser control unit (ICU) is mounted to the left of
the steering column.
The ICU in conjunction with the, powertrain interface module
(PIM) and engine control module (ECM) immobilises the
engine. The ICU communicates with the ECM via the PIM.
Refer to 11A Immobiliser for further information on the
immobiliser system.

Automatic Transmission Control Module
The transmission control module (TCM) is located under the
right-hand rear drivers seat, beneath the carpet.
The TCM's primary role is to efficiently control transmission
shift points according to current driving and vehicle
operating conditions. To effectively do this, the TCM
requires information from other vehicle systems such as the
engine management and automatic transmission systems.
This information exchanged is achieved by connecting the
various system control modules via the serial data network.

9.11 DTC B3902 – Immobiliser Malfunction
DTC Descriptors
This diagnostic procedure supports DTC B3902 – Immobiliser Malfunction.
Circuit Description
The engine control module (ECM), the powertrain interface module (PIM) and the immobiliser control unit (ICU) are
integral parts of the vehicle immobiliser system. The immobiliser system authenticates the security code programmed
into each of these modules to prevent unauthorised vehicle operation. This authentication process includes the following
steps:
1 At predetermined situations, the ICU sends a security code to the PIM.
2 W hen the ignition is switched ON, the PIM receives and compares this security code from the ICU against the security code programmed into the PIM.
3 Once the PIM receives the correct security code from the ICU, it sends a security code to the ECM.
4 The ECM receives and compares this security code from the PIM against the security code programmed into the ECM.
5 The authentication process is complete once the ECM receives the correct security code from the PIM within the specified time frame.
6 The ECM allows normal vehicle operation.
NOTE
If any of these authentication processes fail, the
vehicle will not start and DTCs will set. For further
information on the immobiliser system, refer to
11A Immobiliser.
Conditions for Running the DTC
Conditions for running the DTC are:
• The ignition is switched on.
• The ignition voltage is 10.0 – 16.0 V.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
B3902
Ignition set to the ON position.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
Refer to 4.1 Diagnostic General Descriptions for information on the conditions for clearing DTCs.

9.15 DTC P1611 – Wrong Security Code
Entered
DTC Description
This diagnostic procedure supports DTC P1611 – W rong Security Code Entered.
Circuit Description
Tech 2 is used to program the powertrain interface module (PIM). Before any programming, a security code must be
entered into Tech 2. The PIM will check if the code entered is correct before continuing. If the security code is incorrect,
DTC P1611 sets.
After an incorrect security code is entered, the PIM prevents any further attempts to enter a code until a predetermined
wait time elapses. There are several wait time stages, and for each stage, an incorrect security code may be entered
three times before the lockout time is escalated to the next stage. The lockout stages are as follows:
• Stage 1 wait time is 10 seconds.
• Stage 2 wait time is 10 seconds.
• Stage 3 wait time is 10 minutes.
• Stage 4 wait time is 20 minutes.
• Stage 5 wait time is 40 minutes.
• Stage 6 wait time is 80 minutes.
