Driving
■AVS (adaptive variable suspension system) (if equipped)
The suspension can be switched for improvement in driveability. (P. 343)
■Break-in schedule
If your vehicle is new or equipped with any new power train components (such as an
engine, transmission, differential or wheel bearing), Lexus recommends that you do not
tow a trailer until the vehicle has been driven for over 500 miles (800 km).
After the vehicle has been driven for over 500 miles (800 km), you can start towing.
However, for the next 500 miles (800 km), drive the vehicle at a speed of less than
50 mph (80 km/h) when towing a trailer, and avoid full throttle acceleration.
■Maintenance
●If you tow a trailer, your vehicle will require more frequent maintenance due to the addi-
tional load. (See “Owner’s Guide”, “Warranty and Services Guide”, “Owner’s Manual
Supplement” or “Warranty Booklet”.)
●Retighten the fixing bolts of the towing ba ll and bracket after approximately 600 miles
(1000 km) of trailer towing.
■If trailer sway occurs
One or more factors (crosswinds, passing ve hicles, rough roads, etc.) can adversely
affect handling of your vehicle and trailer, causing instability.
●If trailer swaying occurs:
• Firmly grip the steering wh eel. Steer straight ahead.
Do not try to control trailer sway ing by turning the steering wheel.
• Begin releasing the accelerator pedal im mediately but very gradually to reduce
speed.
Do not increase speed. Do not apply vehicle brakes.
If you make no extreme correction with the steering or brakes, your vehicle and trailer
should stabilize.

If the engine is stopped with the shift lever in a position other than P, the engine
switch will not be turned off but inst
ead be turned to ACCESSORY mode. Per-
form the following procedure to turn the switch off:
Check that the parking brake is set.
Shift the shift lever to P.
Check that “TURN POWER OFF”/“Turn power off” is displayed on the multi-
information display and then pr ess the engine switch once.
Check that “TURN POWER OFF”/“Turn po wer off” on the multi-information
display is off.
■Auto power off function
When the shift lever is in P, if the vehicl e is left in ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode
with the engine not running for more than 20 minutes (ACCESSORY mode) or one
hour (IGNITION ON mode), the engine switch will automatically turn off. However, this
function cannot entirely prevent battery discharge. Do not leave the vehicle with the
engine switch in ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode for long periods of time when
the engine is not running.

■If the engine does not start
The engine immobilizer system ma y not have been deactivated. (P. 77)

■Steering lock
After turning the engine switch off and opening and closing the doors, the steering wheel
will be locked due to the steering lock func tion. Operating the engine switch again auto-
matically cancels the steering lock.

WARNING
■When starting the engine
Always start the engine while sitting in the driver’s seat. Do not depress the accelerator
pedal while starting the engine under any circumstances.
Doing so may cause an accident resu
lting in death or serious injury.
■Caution while driving
If engine failure occurs while the vehicle is moving, do not lock or open the doors until
the vehicle reaches a safe and complete stop. Activation of the steering lock in this cir-
cumstance may lead to an accident, re sulting in death or serious injury.
■Stopping the engine in an emergency
●If you want to stop the engine in an em ergency while driving the vehicle, press and
hold the engine switch for more than 2 seco nds, or press it briefly 3 times or more in
succession. ( P. 509)
However, do not touch the engine switch wh ile driving except in an emergency. Turn-
ing the engine off while drivin g will not cause loss of steering or braking control, but
the power assist to these systems will be lost . This will make it more difficult to steer
and brake, so you should pull over and stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so.
●If the engine switch is operated while the vehicle is running, a warning message will be
shown on the multi-information display and a buzzer sounds.
●When restarting the engine after it was turn ed off while driving, shift the shift lever to
N and press the engine switch.
■When parking
Exhaust gases include harmfu l carbon monoxide (CO), which is colorless and odor-
less. Observe the fo llowing precautions.
Failure to do so may cause exhaust gases to enter the vehicle and may lead to an acci-
dent caused by light-headedness, or may le ad to death or a serious health hazard.
●If the vehicle is in a poorly ventilated area or a closed area, such as a garage, stop the
engine.
●Do not leave the vehicle with the engine ru nning for a long time. If such a situation
cannot be avoided, park the vehicle in an open space and ensure that exhaust fumes
do not enter the vehicle interior.
●Do not leave the engine running in an area with snow build-up, or where it is snowing.
If snowbanks build up around the vehicle while the engine is running, exhaust gases
may collect and enter the vehicle.

■Fluid level
The fluid level should be within the appropriate range.Full (when cold)

Hot: The vehicles has been driven around 50 mph (80 km/h) for 20 min- utes, or slightly longer in frigid temperatures.
(Fluid temperature, 140 F - 175 F [60 C - 80 C]).
Cold: The engine has not been run for about 5 hours. (Room temperature, 50 F - 85 F [10 C - 30 C]).
■Checking the fluid level
Make sure to check the fluid type and prepare the necessary items.
Clean all dirt off the reservoir.
Remove the cap by turnin g it counterclockwise.
Wipe the dipstick clean.
Reinstall the cap and remove it again.
Check the fluid level.

When trouble arises
7-1. Essential information
If your vehicle has to be stopped in an emergency
Steadily step on the brake pedal with both feet and firmly depress it.
Do not pump the brake pedal repeatedly as this will increase the effort required to
slow the vehicle.
Shift the shift lever to N.
If the shift lever is shifted to N
After slowing down, stop the vehicle in a safe place by the road.
Stop the engine.
If the shift lever cannot be shifted to N
Keep depressing the brake pedal with both feet to reduce vehicle speed as
much as possible.
To stop the engine, press and hold
the engine switch for 2 consecutive
seconds or more, or press it briefly 3
times or more in succession.
Stop the vehicle in a safe place by the road.
Only in an emergency, such as if it becomes impossible to stop the vehicle in
the normal way, stop the vehicl e using the following procedure:

WARNING
■If the engine has to be turned off while driving
Power assist for the brakes and steering wheel will be lost, making the brake pedal
harder to depress and the steering wheel heav ier to turn. Decelerate as much as possi-
ble before turning off the engine.

When trouble arises
Securely attach cables or chains to
the towing hooks.
Take care not to damage the vehicle
body.
Enter the vehicle being towed and start the engine.
If the engine does not start, turn th e engine switch to IGNITION ON mode.
Set the four-wheel drive control switch in H4 and push the center differential
lock/unlock switch to unlock the center differential. (P. 344)
For models with the rear height cont rol air suspension: Change the vehicle
height to N (normal) mode and end th e vehicle height control operation.

■While towing

making steering and br aking more difficult.
