When climbing a steep slope or hill, start ina lower gear rather than downshifting to alower gear from a higher gear once theascent has started. This reduces strain onthe engine and the possibility of stalling.
If your vehicle stalls, do not try to turn aroundbecause this could cause vehicle roll over.It is better to reverse back to a safe location.
Apply just enough power to the wheels toclimb the hill. Too much power causes thetires to slip, spin or lose traction, resulting inloss of vehicle control.
Descend a hill in the same gear you woulduse to climb up the hill to avoid excessivebrake application and brake overheating. Donot descend in neutral. Disengage overdriveor move the transmission selector lever to alower gear. When descending a steep hill,avoid sudden hard braking as you could losecontrol. The front wheels have to be turningin order to steer your vehicle.
If your vehicle has anti-lock brakes, apply thebrakes steadily. Do not pump the brakes.
Driving on Snow and Ice
WARNING: If you are driving inslippery conditions that require tire chainsor cables, then it is critical that you drivecautiously. Keep speeds down, allow forlonger stopping distances and avoidaggressive steering to reduce the chancesof a loss of vehicle control which can leadto serious injury or death. If the rear endof your vehicle slides while cornering, steerin the direction of the slide until you regaincontrol of your vehicle.
Note:Excessive tire slippage can causetransmission damage.
Four-wheel drive vehicles have advantagesover two-wheel drive vehicles in snow andice but can skid like any other vehicle.Should you start to slide when driving onsnowy or icy roads, turn the steering wheelin the direction of the slide until you regaincontrol.
Avoid sudden applications of power andquick changes of direction on snow and ice.Apply the accelerator slowly and steadilywhen starting from a full stop.
Avoid sudden braking. Although a four-wheeldrive vehicle may accelerate better than atwo-wheel drive vehicle in snow and ice, itdoes not stop any faster as braking occursat all four wheels. Do not becomeoverconfident in any road condition.
Make sure you allow sufficient distancebetween you and other vehicles for stopping.Drive slower than usual and consider usingone of the lower gears. In emergencystopping situations, apply the brake steadily.Do not pump the brake pedal. See Hints onDriving With Anti-Lock Brakes (page 226).

Maintenance and Modifications
The suspension and steering systems onyour vehicle have been designed and testedto provide predictable performance whetherloaded or empty. For this reason, we stronglyrecommend that you do not makemodifications such as adding or removingparts (i.e. lift kits or stabilizer bars) or by usingreplacement parts not equivalent to theoriginal factory equipment.
We recommend that you use caution whenyour vehicle has either a high load or device(i.e. ladder or luggage racks). Anymodifications to your vehicle that raise thecenter of gravity may cause your vehicle toroll over when there is a loss of vehiclecontrol.
Failure to maintain your vehicle correctly mayvoid the warranty, increase your repair cost,reduce vehicle performance and operationalcapabilities and adversely affect you andyour passenger's safety. We recommend youfrequently inspect your vehicle's chassiscomponents when your vehicle is subject tooff road usage.

When you shift to reverse (R), the sidesensing system provides audible warningswhen your vehicle is moving and obstaclesare detected within 24 in (60 cm) and areinside the driving path of your vehicle. Whenyou stop your vehicle the audible warningstops after two seconds.
Note:Visual distance indication remains onwhen the transmission is in reverse (R).
When you shift to drive (D) or any otherforward gear, for example, low (L), sport (S)or any forward gear in manual transmission,the side sensing system provides audibleand visual distance warnings when yourvehicle is moving below a speed of 5 mph(8 km/h) and obstacles are detected within24 in (60 cm) and are inside the driving pathof your vehicle. Once your vehicle reachesa standstill condition, the audible warningstops after two seconds and visual indicationstops after four seconds.
If the transmission is in neutral (N), the sidesensing system provides visual distanceindication only when your vehicle is movingbelow a speed of 5 mph (8 km/h) and thereis a front or rear parking aid obstacledetected, and the side obstacle is within24 in (60 cm) from the side of your vehicle.When you stop your vehicle the visualdistance indication stops after four seconds.
If the side sensing system is not available,the side distance indicator blocks do notappear.
The side sensing system is not availableunder the following condition:
•If you switch the traction control systemoff.
The side sensing system may not beavailable until you have driven approximatelythe length of your vehicle in order for thesystem to reinitialize if:
•You switch the ignition on, off and backon.
•Your vehicle remains stationary for overtwo minutes.
•The anti-lock brake system is activated.
•The traction control system is activated.
•When the steering wheel angleinformation is not available, the sidesensing system is not available. Thevehicle must be driven at least 492 ft(150 m) above 19 mph (30 km/h) torecover the steering wheel angleinformation.
ACTIVE PARK ASSIST (IF EQUIPPED)
WARNING: You must remain in yourvehicle when the system turns on. At alltimes, you are responsible for controllingyour vehicle, supervising the system andintervening, if required. Failure to take caremay result in the loss of control of yourvehicle, serious personal injury or death.
WARNING: The sensors may notdetect objects in heavy rain or otherconditions that cause interference.

WARNING: Adaptive cruise controlis not a crash warning or avoidancesystem.
The system adjusts your vehicle speed tomaintain the set gap between you and thevehicle in front of you in the same lane. Youcan select four gap settings.
The system uses a radar sensor whichprojects a beam directly in front of yourvehicle.
Note:It is your responsibility to stay alert,drive safely and be in control of the vehicleat all times.
The cruise controls are on the steeringwheel. See Cruise Control (page 90).
Switching Adaptive Cruise Control On
Press and release the button.
The indicator, current gap settingand set speed appear in theinformation display.
Setting the Adaptive Cruise Speed
Drive to your preferred speed.
Press and release the button.
Take your foot off the accelerator pedal.

Changing the drive mode automaticallychanges the functionality of the followingsystems:
•Electronically power-assisted steeringsystem adjusts steering effort and feelbased on the mode you select. SeeSteering (page 279).
•Electronic stability control and tractioncontrol maintain your vehicle control inadverse conditions or high performancedriving. See Stability Control (page 232).
•Electronic throttle control enhances thepowertrain response to your inputs.
•Transmission controls optimize with shiftschedules tuned to each mode.
•Driveline settings optimize for eachmode.
Using the System
The system automatically tailors your vehicleconfiguration for each mode you select.
To change the drive mode setting, use thedrive mode selector on the center console.
Note:Mode changes are not available whenthe vehicle ignition is off or when the engineis not running.
•NORMAL – For everyday driving. Thismode is a perfect balance of excitement,comfort and convenience.
•EXCITE – For aggressive on-road driving.This mode increases throttle response,provides a sportier steering feel, alongwith quicker shifting. The suspensionstiffens, with an emphasis on handlingand control. The transmission also holdsgears longer, helping your vehicleaccelerate faster when shifting gears.
•CONSERVE – Enables efficient andresponsible driving. It helps delivermaximum fuel efficiency and increasesdriving range.
•NORMAL 4A – For general on-roaddriving. Use this mode on normal firmsurfaces such as dry or wet pavementand hard packed dirt or gravel roads.Delivers power to all four wheels, asrequired.

Distance D
The horizontal distance from the bumper tothe center of the trailer axle (single axletrailers), or the center of the axles (trailerswith dual axles or more).
Step 5: Enter Measurements Using theInformation Display
Using the recorded measurements, enter therequired data into the system. Follow the onscreen prompts to enter each of themeasurements taken in step 4. When all fourdistances have been entered, a confirmationdisplay will appear. Check the values arecorrect before proceeding, or go back tochange any if required.
Step 6: Confirming the Sticker Location
Check the rear view camera display to seeif the sticker is identified by the system andmarked with a red circle.
Confirm that the red circle is correctly locatedover the sticker image in the display. The onscreen prompt will ask you to confirm this.
Note:If the system cannot locate the stickertry cleaning the camera lens, and also makesure the sticker is within the green zone asindicated in step 3.
Calibrating the System
To complete setup, drive your vehiclestraight forward between 4 mph (6 km/h) and24 mph (39 km/h) following the on screenprompt.
Note:Check your measurements to makesure you measured from the correct points.
Note:If you move the steering wheel duringthis procedure, the calibration pauses.
Note:We recommend that you do not dothis at night.
A message will be displayed duringcalibration and after calibration is complete.
Using Pro Trailer Backup Assist
To use the system press the button andselect the required trailer from the display.When the sticker is located, the displayprompts you to shift into reverse (R). Thesystem turns on.

•If the sticker location needs to bechanged, the previous sticker must beremoved and a new sticker needs to beplaced on the trailer. ONLY ONESTICKER SHOULD BE PLACED ON THETRAILER FOR PROPER SYSTEMFUNCTION.
•Disregard the prompt to remove thissticker and continue to the next step ifyou only plan to update themeasurements for the current stickerlocation.
System consistently shows Stop now takecontrol of steering warning:
•The system displays this warning whenit can no longer steer the vehicle and youmust take over steering. There are fourreasons why this warning displays andadditional information regarding thereason for the warning is available on thecenter display.
•The steering wheel is touched while thesystem is controlling it. Avoid touchingthe wheel during system operation.
•The maximum speed for featureoperation is exceeded. Systemperformance is optimized at slowerspeeds. Backup slowly.
•The sticker was lost by the camerasystem. Once your vehicle is stoppedadditional warnings will indicate thesticker was lost. Refer to sticker losttrouble shooting tips.
•An internal condition for systemoperation was not met which requiresyour vehicle return to manual control ofthe steering.
Note:The system is designed to be usedwith the same trailer connection every timethe trailer is chosen from the selection menu.Using a different drawbar or a different pinhole (on drawbars with more than one) whenconnecting the drawbar to your vehicleaffects the trailer measurements. Take themeasurements again and update if required.
TRAILER SWAY CONTROL
WARNING: Turning off trailer swaycontrol increases the risk of loss of vehiclecontrol, serious injury or death. Ford doesnot recommend disabling this featureexcept in situations where speed reductionmay be detrimental (such as hill climbing),the driver has significant trailer towingexperience, and can control trailer swayand maintain safe operation.
Note:This feature does not prevent trailersway, but reduces it once it begins.
Note:This feature cannot stop all trailersfrom swaying.
Note:In some cases, if vehicle speed is toohigh, the system may activate multiple times,gradually reducing vehicle speed.

Your vehicle may be equipped with atemporary or conventional spare tire. Atemporary spare tire is different in size(diameter or width), tread-type (All-Seasonor All-Terrain) or is from a differentmanufacturer than the road tires on yourvehicle. Consult information on the tire labelor Safety Compliance label for limitationswhen using.
Launching or Retrieving a Boat orPersonal Watercraft (PWC)
Note:Disconnect the wiring to the trailerbefore backing the trailer into the water.
Note:Reconnect the wiring to the trailerafter removing the trailer from the water.
When backing down a ramp during boatlaunching or retrieval:
•Do not allow the static water level to riseabove the bottom edge of the rearbumper.
•Do not allow waves to break higher than6 in (15 cm) above the bottom edge ofthe rear bumper.
Exceeding these limits may allow water toenter vehicle components:
•Causing internal damage to thecomponents.
•Affecting driveability, emissions, andreliability.
Replace the rear axle lubricant anytime therear axle has been submerged in water.Water may have contaminated the rear axlelubricant, which is not normally checked orchanged unless a leak is suspected or otheraxle repair is required.
TOWING THE VEHICLE ON FOUR
WHEELS
WARNING: If your vehicle has asteering wheel lock make sure the ignitionis in the accessory or on position whenbeing towed.
Recreational Towing
Note:Put your climate control system inrecirculated air mode to prevent exhaustfumes from entering your vehicle. SeeClimate Control (page 152).
Follow these guidelines if you have a needfor recreational towing, such as towing yourvehicle behind a motorhome. Theseguidelines are designed to prevent damageto your transmission.
Two-wheel Drive Vehicles
You cannot tow a two-wheel drive vehiclewith any wheels on the ground as vehicle ortransmission damage may occur. You musttow your vehicle with all four wheels off theground, for example when using acar-hauling trailer.

Four-wheel Drive Vehicles Without 4x4LOW
If your vehicle does not have 4x4 Low, youcannot tow your vehicle with any wheels onthe ground or vehicle damage may occur.You must tow your vehicle with all fourwheels off the ground, for example whenusing a car-hauling trailer.
Four-wheel Drive Vehicles With 4x4 LOW
You can only tow a vehicle with 4X4 LOWwith all wheels on the ground by placing thetransfer case in its neutral position andengaging the four wheel down towingfeature. Perform the steps outlined in thefollowing section after positioning yourvehicle behind the tow vehicle and properlysecuring them together.
Four-wheel-down Towing
Note:If completed successfully, theinformation display shows Neutral TowEnabled Leave Transmission in Neutral.This indicates that your vehicle is safe to towwith all wheels on the ground.
Note:If you do not see the message in theinformation display, you must perform theprocedure again from the beginning.
Note:Make sure you properly secure yourvehicle to the tow vehicle.
1. Start your vehicle.
2. Confirm that your vehicle is in NORMALmode. See Drive Mode Control (page284).
3. Place your vehicle in stay in neutralmode. See Automatic Transmission(page 210).
4. Switch your vehicle off by pressing theengine START/STOP button once. ATransmission Not in Park messageappears in the information display.
5.Place your vehicle in accessory mode bypressing the start button once withoutpressing the brake pedal.
6. Press and hold the brake pedal.
7. Enable neutral tow through theinformation display by selecting Settingsfrom the menu. See General Information(page 120).
8. Then select Advanced Settings.
9. Then select Vehicle.
10. Then select Neutral Tow.
11. Press and hold the OK button until theinformation display states Neutral TowEnabled Leave Transmission inNeutral.
Note:If completed successfully, theinformation display shows Neutral TowEnabled Leave Transmission in Neutral.This indicates that your vehicle is safe to towwith all wheels on the ground.
Note:If you do not see the message in theinformation display, you must perform theprocedure again from the beginning.
Note:You may hear an audible noise as thetransfer case shifts into neutral, this isnormal.
12. Leave the transmission in neutral (N)and switch the ignition off by pressingthe engine START/STOP button oncewithout pressing the brake pedal. Youdo not need to leave your keys in thevehicle. You can lock and unlock yourvehicle as you normally do.

Towing

WARNING: Do not disconnect thebattery during recreational towing. Itprevents the transfer case from shiftingproperly and may cause the vehicle to roll,even if the transmission is in park (P).
WARNING: Shifting the transfer caseto its neutral position for recreationaltowing may cause the vehicle to roll, evenif the transmission is in park (P). It mayinjure the driver and others. Make sure youpress the foot brake and the vehicle is ina secure, safe position when you shift toneutral (N).
Note:Failing to put the transfer case in itsneutral position can damage vehiclecomponents.
Note:You can check four-wheel-downtowing status at any time by opening thedriver's door or turning the ignition to theaccessory or on position. A messageappears in the information display confirmingyour vehicle is in neutral tow.
To exit four-wheel-down towing and returnthe transfer case to its 2H position:
1. With your vehicle still properly securedto the tow vehicle, press the brake pedaland start the engine.
2. Switch your vehicle off by pressing theengine START/STOP button once.
3.Place your vehicle in accessory mode bypressing the start button once withoutpressing the brake pedal.
4. Press the brake pedal.
5.Place the transmission back into park (P).
6. Release the brake pedal.
Note:If completed successfully, theinformation display shows 2H and NeutralTow Disabled.
Note:If the indicator light and message donot display, you must perform the procedureagain from the beginning.
Note:You may hear an audible noise as thetransfer case shifts out of its neutral position,this is normal.
Note:If Shift Delayed Pull Forward displaysin the instrument cluster, transfer case geartooth blockage is present. See theinstructions following this section.
7.Apply the parking brake, then disconnectyour vehicle from the tow vehicle.
8. Release the parking brake, start theengine, and shift the transmission intodrive (D) to make sure the transfer caseis out of the neutral tow position.
9.If the transfer case does not successfullyshift out of neutral (N), set the parkingbrake until you can have your vehicleserviced.
Resolving the Shift Delayed Pull Forwardor To Exit 4x4 LOW Shift to N Message
If the instrument cluster displays thesemessages, perform the following:
1. Press and hold the brake pedal.
2.Put the transmission into neutral (N), thenstart the engine.
3. With the engine running, shift thetransmission into drive (D) and let thevehicle roll forward, up to 3 ft (1 m). Youmay hear an audible noise as the transfercase shifts out of its neutral position. Thisis normal.
