Maximum torque Maximum ->torque that is achieved at a
given engine speed. The higher the
max imum torque, the greater the pow-
er delive red to the wheels by the en-
gine.
Memor yfunction*
Memory for three individual seat, steer-
ing wheel and mirror positions. Posi-
tions are saved for each key and/or
->KEYLESS GO key*.
Menu The ->operating system displays are ar-
ranged in menus. Several commands
are grouped together in the men us, e.g.
the Audio menu contains theSelect
station
orOperate the CD playercom-
mands. You can change the settings for
your vehicle directly using these com-

MON (M otor O ctane N umber)
Indicates the petrol octane number de-
termined by standard methods. MON is
a measure of the ->knock resistance of
the pet rol.
Multi-function display Display in the ->instrument cluster
which shows information about the
->operati ngsystem and system mes-
sages.
Multi-function ste ering wheel
Steering wheel with buttons which you
use to contro lthe ->operating system.
On-board voltage
The vehicle's voltage, influenced by
outgoing lines, electrical consumers
and return lines. The battery can re-
ceive and produce extremely high elec-
tric alcurrent without causing a
significant change in the voltage. Operating system
You can use the operating syst emto
look up information about your vehicle
and to make settings. This information
is displayed on the ->multi-function dis-
play. The buttons on the ->multi-func-
tion steering wheel are used to control
the displ ayand the settings in the oper-
at ing system.
Overrevving range Speeds in the red area of the rev coun-
ter at which the engine can only oper-
ate for a shor tperiod.
Overrun mode Passive acceleration (deceleration) of
the vehicle, e.g. if you drive downhi llor
release the accelerator pedal.
Parking brake Prevents th evehicle from rolling away

Parktronic* System wh ich makes parking easier by
giving the driver visual and audible sig-
nals.
Partial load mode Engine operating status in which only
part of the maximum engine output or
maximum torque isused, e.g. in ->over-
run mo de.
Program selector switch In vehicles wit h->automatic transmis-
sion*, switch used to shift between
"sport mode" and "comfort mode" or
to select the "manual gear shift pro-
gram"*. This aff ects the gearshift ing
characteristics of the transmission.

RDS (R adio D ata S ystem)
Digital data transfer system for UHF ra-
dio stations.
Re arward-facing child seat
Special ->restraint system for children
up to nine months of age or weighing
up to 10 kg. If a rearward-f acing child
seat wi thautomatic ->child seat recog-
nition is fitted, the sensor system pre-
ve nts the front-passenger airbag from
being triggered.
Re stra int systems
Seat bel ts,belt tensioners, belt force
li miters, airbags and child restraint sys-
tems. As independent systems, their
protecti vefunctions complement one
another. Ribbed mats
Floormats with anti-slip rubber surface.
Rim Part of the ->wheel to whi chthe tyre is
fitted. Term commonly used for both
rim and wheel disc.
Roll-o ver ba rs
Occupant prote ction system consisting
of plastic-coated stee lpipes. The roll-
over bars are retracted in the bodywork
under normal driving conditions.

matically in critic al driving situa-
tions.
! You can raise and lower the roll-
over bars manually.
RON (R esearch O ctane N umber)

TIR EFIT kit
Accessories for temp orary repairs to
flat tyres. The TIREFIT kit consists of a
filler bottle with sealant, a filler hose,
and a valve core extractor with valve
and an electric air pump.
To rque
Force exerted around a central axis of
rotation, e.g. when a wheel bolt is tight-
ened. For engines, the torque isthe
force transferred to the ->transmission.
To rque conver ter
This has the same function on vehicles
with ->autom atic tra nsmission as the
clutch has on vehicles with manual
->transmission.
Tr ac tion
Force which is transferred from the ve-
hicle to the road via the tyres and
whi chdescribes the grip. Traction mode
Acti veacceleration of the vehicle by
adding more throttle.
Transmission Component of the ->drive train that
converts the high speed of the engine
tolower rotation speeds at the drive
wheels and thus optimises the transfer
of engine ->torque to the wheels.
Wheel Term used in everyday language to de-
note ->rim, wheel disc and tyre.
Xe non headlamps*
Headlamps whi chuse an electric arc
in stead of a heated fil ament to gener-
