Shift ranges
Introduction i
You can restrictord erestrict the shift
range by using the steering wheel paddle
shifters.
When the automatic transmission is in
position D,itispossible to restrictore xpand
the shift range (Y page 162).
The shift range selecte disshown in the
multifunctio ndisplay. The automatic
transmission shift sonly as far as the selected
gear.

You can use the engine'

You can use the braking effect of
the engine on downhill gradients
and for driving:

on steep mountain roads
R in mountainous terrain
R in arduous conditions 000B
To use the braking effect of the
engine on extremely steep downhill

stretches
Restricting th

Pull the left-han dsteerin gwheel paddle
shifter.
The automatic transmission shifts down
one gear and restrictst he shift range to the
relevant gear.
i If the engine exceeds the maximum
engine speed when shifting down, the
automatic transmission protectsa gainst
engine damage by not shifting down.
i If the maximum engine speed for the shift
range is reached and you continue to
accelerate, the automatic transmission
shifts up, even if the shift range is restricted. This prevents the engine from
overrevving.
Extending the shift range X
Pull the right-hand steering wheel paddle
shifter.
The shift range is derestricted.
Clearing the shift range restriction X
Pull and hold the right-hand steering wheel
paddle shifter until Dis shown again in the
multifunction display.
The automatic transmission shifts from the
current shift range directly to D.
Selecting the ideal shift range X
Pull the left-hand steering wheel paddle
shifter and hold it in position.
The automatic transmission shifts to the
gear which allowso ptimum acceleration
and deceleration. To do this, the automatic
transmission shifts down one or more
gears. Manual drive program(
AMG vehicles
and vehiclesw ith AMG Sports
package)
Switching on the manuald rive program X
Turn the drive program selector
(Y page 159) until Mappears in the
multifunction display.
The indicator Mon the drive program
selector lights up in red.
The manual drive program is only available for
AMG vehicles.
Manual drive program Mis different from
drive programs Sand S+with regard to
spontaneity, responsiveness and
smoothness of gear changes.
Manual drive program Mcan be selected
using the drive program selector. In manual
drive program M,you can change gear using 162

currently selected and engaged is shown in
the multifunction display.
Upshifting !
In manual drive program M,the automatic
transmission does not shift up
automatically even when the engine
limiting speed for the current gear is
reached. When the engine limiting speed is
reached, the fuel supply is cut to prevent
the engine from overrevving. Always make
sure that the engine speed does not reach
the red area of the tachometer. There is
otherwise arisk of engine damage.
X Pull the right-hand steering wheel paddle
shifter.
The automatic transmission shifts up to the
next gear. 001A
Upshift indicator

Before the engine speed reaches the red area,
an upshift indicator will be shown in the
multifunction display.
Downshifting X
Pull the left-hand steering wheel paddle
shifter.
The automatic transmission shifts down to
the next gear.
i If you brake the vehicle or stop without
shifting down, the automatic transmission
will shift down to agear that will allow the
vehicle to accelerate or pull away again.
i For maximum acceleration, pull the left-
hand steering wheel paddle shifter until the transmission selects the optimum gear for
the current speed.
Kickdown i
Kickdown is not possible in manual drive
program M.

When leaving the vehicle, alway
stake the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children unsupervised in the vehicle.
! Always secure the vehicle correctly
against rolling away .Otherwise, the vehicle
or its drivetrai ncould be damaged.
To ensure that the vehicle is secured against
rolling away unintentionally:
R the parking brake must be applied.
R the transmission must be in position Pand
the SmartKey must be removed from the
ignition lock.
R on uphill or downhill gradients, the front
wheels must be turned towards the curb. Switching off the engine

WARNING
The automatic transmission switches to
neutral position Nwhen you switch off the
engine. The vehicle may roll away.T here is a
risk of an accident.
After switching off the engine, always switch
to parking position P.Prevent the parked
vehicle from rolling away by applying the
parking brake.
Vehicles with automatic transmission X
Apply the parking brake firmly.
X All vehicles( except AMG vehicles): shift
the transmission to position P. Selector lever in AMG vehicles with
Pbutton
X AMG vehicles: pressPbutton 001A.
Using the SmartKey
X Turn the SmartKey to position 0in the
ignition lock and remove it.
The immobilizer is activated.
i If you turn off the engine with the
SmartKey and then remove it from the
ignition lock or open afront door, the
automatic transmission shifts to P
automatically.
Using KEYLESS-GO
X Press the Start/Stop button (Y page 147).
The engine stops and all the indicator
lamps in the instrumentc luster go out.
i When the driver's door is closed, this
corresponds to key position 1.When the
driver's door is open ,this corresponds to
key position 0:"key removed".
i If yo uturno ff the engine with the Start/
Stop button, the automatic transmission
shifts to N.Ifyou then open one of the front
doors, the automatic transmission shifts to
P.
i The engine can be turned off while the
vehicle is in motion by pressing and holding
the Start/Stop button for about three
seconds. This function operates
independently of the ECO start/stop
automatic engine switch-off function. 168

RAC
ESTART
Important safety notes i
Observe the safety notes for the SPORT
handling mod e(Ypage 70).
RAC ESTART is intended solely for activation
on dedicated race circuits.
RACE START enables optimal acceleration
from astandin gstart .The precondition for
this is asuitable high-grip road surface.
i RACE START is only available in AMG
vehicles.
Conditions for activation You can activat
eRACE START if:
R the doors are closed.
R the engine is runnin gand it has reached an
operating temperature of approximately
176 ‡(80 †). This is the case when the
engine oil temperature in the multifunction
display stops flashing.
R SPORT handling mode is activated.

R the steerin gwheel is in the straight-ahead
position
R the vehicle is stationary and the brake
pedal is depressed (left foot).
R the transmission is in position D.
Activating RACE START X
Depress the brake pedal with your left foot
and keep it depressed.
X Turn the drive program selector clockwise
(Y page 159) until the RSlamp lights up.
The RACE START Confirm: Paddle UP Cancel: Paddle DOWN message appears
in the multifunction display.
i If the activation conditions are no longer
fulfilled, RACE START is canceled. The
START Canceled message appears in the
multifunction display. X
To cancel: pull the left steerin gwheel
paddle shifter (Y page 160).
or
X To confirm: pull the right steerin gwheel
paddle shifter (Y page 160).
The RACE START Available Depress gas pedal message appears in the
multifunction display.
i If you do not depress the accelerator
pedal fully within two seconds, RACE
START is canceled. The RACE START Not Possible See Operator's Manual
message appears in the multifunction
display.
X Fully depress the accelerator pedal.
The engine speed rises to approximately
3,500 rpm.
The RACE START Release brake to start message appears in the
multifunction display.
i If you do not release the brake pedal
within five seconds, RACE START is
canceled. The RACE START Canceled message appears in the multifunction
display.
X Take your foot off the brake, but keep the
accelerator pedal depressed.
The vehicle pulls away at maximum
acceleration.
The RACE START Active message appears
in the multifunction display.
RACE START is deactivated when the vehicle
reaches aspeed of approximately 30 mph
(Canada: 50 km/h) .Drive program S+is
activated. SPORT handling mode remains
activated.
RACE START is deactivated immediately if
you release the accelerator pedal during
RACE START or if any of the activation
conditions are no longer fulfilled. The RACE START Not Possible See Operator's
Manual message appears in the multifunction
display.
i If RACE START is used repeatedly within
as hort period of time, it is only available 188

it is switched off and ha scooled down.
X Clean the display surface using a
commercially available microfiber cloth
and TFT/LCD display cleaner.

Cleaning Night View Assist Plus !
Never clean the camera lens. When
cleaning the field of vision of the driving
systems, make sure that you do not spray
glass cleaner on the camera lens. If the
camera lens is dirty, visit aqualified
specialist workshop. X
Fold down the camera cover by recess 001A.X
Use asoft cloth to clean the windshield in
front of camera 0010. Cleaning the plastic trim G
WARNING
Care products and cleaning agents containing
solvent scause surfaces in the cockpit to
become porous. As aresult, plastic parts may
come loose in the event of air bag
deployment. There is arisk of injury.
Do not use any care products and cleaning
agents to clean the cockpit.
! Do not affix the following to plastic
surfaces:
R stickers
R films
R scented oil bottles or similar items
You can otherwise damage the plastic.
! Do not allow cosmetics, insect repellent
or sunscreen to come into contact with the
plastic trim. This maintains the high-quality
look of the surfaces.
X Wipe the plastic trim with adamp, lint-free
cloth, e.g. amicrofiber cloth.
X Heavy soiling: use care and cleaning
products recommended and approved by
Mercedes-Benz.
The surface may change color temporarily.
Wait until the surface is dry again.
Cleaning the steering wheel and gear or
selector lever X
Thoroughly wipe with adamp cloth or use
leather care agents that have been
recommended and approved by Mercedes-
Benz.
Cleaning genuine wood and trim
elements !
Do not use solvent-based cleaning agents
such as tar remover, wheel cleaners,
polishes or waxes. There is otherwise arisk
of damaging the surface.
! Do not use chrome polish on trim pieces.
