This is data rega rding the operation of theve hicle,
which ha vebeen processed bycont rol units.
This includes thefo llowing data, fore xa mpl e:
R vehicle status information suc hasth e speed,
longitudinal acceleration, lateral acceleration,
number of wheel revo lutions or thefa stened
seat belts display R
ambient conditions, su chas temp erature, rain
sensor or distance sensor
Generall y,the use of these data is temp orar y;
th ey will not be stored be yond the period of oper-
ation and will only be processed within theve hicle
itself. Control units oTen contain data memories
fo rve hicle keys,fo re xamp le. Their use permits the
te mp orary or permanent documentation of tech ni-
cal information about theve hicle's operating
state, component loads, main tenance requ ire-
ments and tech nical events or faults.
Depending on theve hicle equipment, thefo llo w-
ing data are stored:
R operating status of system components,
suchas /ll le vels, tyre pressure or battery sta-
tus
R malfunctions or faults in impor tant system
components, suc has lights or brakes
R system reactions in special driving situations,
suchas airbag depl oyment or the inter vention
of stability cont rol systems
R information on events leading tovehicle dam-
age R
charge leve l of the high-voltage batter y,esti-
mated range
In cer tain cases, it may be required tostore da ta
th at wo uld ha veotherwise been used only temp o-
rari ly. This may be the case if theve hicle has
de tected a malfunction, fore xamp le.
If yo u use services, suc hasre pair services and
maintenance work, stored operational data as
we ll as theve hicle identi/cation number can be
re ad out and used. They can be read out by
service network emplo yees, suc haswo rkshops
and manu facturers or third parties, suc has break-
down services. The same is true in the case of
wa rranty claims and quality assurance measures.
In general, there adout is per form ed via the legally
prescribed port forth e diagnostics connection in
th eve hicle. The operational data that are read out
document tech nical states of theve hicle or of
individual components and assist in the diagnosis
of malfunctions, compliance with warranty obli ga-
tions and quality impr ovement. Tothat end, these
data, in particular information about component
loads, tech nical events, malfunctions and other
fa ults may be transmitted along with theve hicle 40 40

Co mp onents in there straint system ma y be
acti vated unintentionally or not deploy as plan-
ned in an accident. In theev ent of an acci-
dent, the high-voltage on-board electrical sys-
te m may not be deactivated as intended. Yo
u may su.er an electric shock if youto uch
th e damaged components of the high-voltage
on-board electrical system. #

there straint system works depends on the
se verity of the impact de tected and the apparent
type of accident:
R Frontal impact
R Rear impact
R Side impact
R Rollover
The activation thre sholds forth e components of
th ere straint system are de term ined based on the
ev aluation of the sensor values measured at vari-
ous points in theve hicle. This process is pre-e mp-
tive in nature. The triggering/deployment of thecomponents of
there straint system must take
place in good time at the start of the collision.
Fa ctors which can only be seen and measured
aTer a collision has occur red cannot play a deci-
sive role in airbag deployment. Nor do they pro-
vide an indication of airbag deployment.
The vehicle may be deformed signi/cantly without
an airbag being depl oyed. This is the case if only
parts which are relatively easily deformed are
a.ec tedand thera te of vehicle deceleration is
not high. Con versely, an airbag may be depl oyed
ev en though theve hicle su.ers only minor defor-
mation. If very rigid vehicle parts such as longitu-
dinal membe rsare hit, this may result in su1-
ciently high le vels of vehicle deceleration.
Depending on the de tected deployment situation,
th e components of there straint system can be
acti vated or deplo yed independently of each
ot her:
R Seat belt tensioner: frontal impact, rear
impact, side impact, rollo ver
R Driver's airbag, front passenger airbag: frontal

Objects trapped under the co-driver seat can
inter fere with the function of the automatic
co-driver airbag shuto. or damage the system. #
Do not store any objects under the co-
driver seat. #
When the co-driver seat is occupied,
make sure that no objects are trapped
under the co-driver seat. When /tting a
child restraint system tothe front
passenger seat, obser vetheve hicle-speci/c infor-
mation (/ page 75). Also, alw ays obser vethe
no tes on rear wa rd-facing or forw ard-facing child re
straint systems on the front passenger seat
(/ page 74).
A person on the front passenger seat must
obser vethefo llowing information:
R Fasten seat belts co rrectly (/ page 45).
R Sit in an almost upright seat position with their
back against the seat backrest.
R Sit with their feet resting on the 0oor, if possi-
ble.
The front passenger airbag may otherwise be dis-
abled bymistake, forex ample, in thefo llowing sit-
uations:
R The front passenger transfers their weight by
supporting themsel ves on a vehicle armrest.
R The front passen ger sits in such a wayth at
th eir weight is raised from the seat sur face. &
