41Proceed as follows:
R
do not use a rearward-facing child
restraint system on the front-passenger
seat.
R fit a rearward-facing child restraint sys-
tem on a suitable rear seat.
or
R only use a forward-facing child restraint
system on the front-passenger seat and
move the front-passenger seat to its rear-
most position.
R have the automatic child seat recognition
checked at a qualified specialist work-
shop.
To ensure that the automatic child seat rec-
ognition on the front-passenger seat func- tions correctly, never place objects (such
as a cushion) under the child restraint sys-
tem. The entire base of the child restraint
system must always rest on the seat cush-
ion. An incorrectly fitted child restraint sys-
tem cannot perform its intended protective
function in the event of an accident, and
could lead to injuries.
i The windowbags and the belt tensioner
on the front-passenger side are still active
even if the front-passenger front airbag is
disabled. G
Risk of injury
Do not place items of electronic equipment
on the front-passenger seat, e.g.:
R laptops, when switched on
R mobile phones
R cards with transponders, e.g. ski passes
or access cards Signals from electronic equipment can
cause interference in the automatic child
seat recognition sensor system. This could
lead to a system malfunction. This may
cause the
5PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF
warning lamp to light up without there
being a child seat with automatic child seat
recognition fitted. This means that the
front-passenger airbag does not deploy
during an accident. It is also possible that
the 5 PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF warning
lamp will not light up briefly if you turn the
key in the ignition lock to position 2. Safety

intended to help you navigate through the
menus. The terms themselves are not always
displayed in the multi-function display.
For the Audio 20 CD, the on-board computer
displays the
AudioandTelephone* menus
in English. The language for these menus is
not dependent on the language selected for
the multi-function display.
The display messages in the AudioandTele-
phone* menus are slightly different in vehi- cles with Audio 20 CD and COMAND APS*.
The examples given in this Owner's Manual
apply to vehicles equipped with COMAND

The From start consumption statistics are
reset automatically after 999 hours or
9,999 kilometres. The
From reset consumption statistics are

Calling up the range X

Distance:
The multi-function display shows the esti-
mated distance that can be covered by the
vehicle, based on your current driving style
and the amount of fuel remaining in the
tank.
If there is only a small amount of fuel left in
the fuel tank, the display shows a vehicle
being refuelled instead of the range. Telephone menu*
Functions and displays are dependent on the
optional equipment installed in your vehicle.
You can place your mobile phone in the
mobile phone bracket* (Y page 147), or set
up a Bluetooth connection to the audio sys-
tem or COMAND APS* (see the separate
operating instructions). G
Risk of accident
You must observe the legal requirements
for the country in which you are currently
driving when operating a mobile phone in
the vehicle.
If it is permitted to operate a mobile phone
while the vehicle is in motion, only operate
it when road and traffic conditions permit.
You could otherwise be distracted from the
traffic conditions, cause an accident and
injure yourself and others.

tem or COMAND APS*; see separate oper-

Mobile phone on PIN code not yet entered
Once you have inserted the mobile phone into
the mobile phone bracket*, the multi-func-
tion display shows the TEL PIN?message
(COMAND APS*: Enter phone PIN:).
X Enter the PIN using the mobile phone, Lin-
guatronic*, the audio system or COMAND
APS*.
The mobile phone will search for a network.
Mobile phone operational
You will see the Readymessage or the name
of the GSM network provider in the multi-
function display. If the operational readiness
symbol goes out, your vehicle is outside the
transmission and reception range. In this
case you will see No Servicein the multi-
function display. Accepting a call If someone calls you while you are in the
Telephone
menu, the following message
appears in the multi-function display: Audio 20 CD display
COMAND APS* displayX
Press the íbutton to accept the call.
Rejecting or ending a call X
Press the ìbutton.
Dialling a number from the phone book If your mobile phone is operational, you can
select and dial a number from the phone book
at any time. You can enter new numbers into
the phone book using the mobile phone.
Please refer to separate operating instruc-
tions for information on how to do this.

Overview of driving systems
The vehicle's driving systems are described

which you can use to control the speed of
the vehicle
R Ultrasonic reversing aid*, which helps you
park and manoeuvre
R Reversing camera *,which helps you when
parking and manoeuvring
You will find further information about driving
off-road in the "Operation" section
(Y page 172). Cruise control
Cruise control maintains a constant road
speed for you. On long and steep downhill
gradients, especially if the vehicle is laden or
towing a trailer, you must select shift range
1, 2or 3in good time. By doing so you will
make use of the braking effect of the engine,
which relieves the load on the brake system
and prevents the brakes from overheating
and wearing too quickly. G
Risk of accident
Do not change down for additional engine
braking on a slippery road surface. This
could cause the drive wheels to lose their
grip and the vehicle could skid.
Use cruise control only if road and traffic con-
ditions make it appropriate to maintain a
steady speed for a prolonged period. You can
store any road speed above 30 km/h. G
Risk of accident
Cruise control cannot take account of road
and traffic conditions.
Always pay attention to traffic conditions
even when cruise control is activated.
