Shifting gears
!Mercedes-AMG vehicles:the automatictransmission does not shift up automaticallyeven when the engine limiting speed for thecurrent gear is reached. When the enginelimiting speed is reached, the fuel supply iscut to prevent the engine from overrevving.Always make sure that the engine speeddoes not reach the red area of the tachome-ter. There is otherwise a risk of engine dam-age.

Automatic down shifting occurs when coast-ing.
If the engine exceeds the maximum enginespeed when shifting down, the automatictransmission protects against engine dam-age by not shifting down.

Kickdown

If you apply full throttle, the automatic trans-mission shifts up to the next gear when themaximum engine speed is reached. This pre-vents the engine from overrevving.

Refueling
Important safety notes

The electric parking brake is not automaticallyapplied if the engine is switched off by theECO start/stop function.
Releasing automatically
Your vehicle's electric parking brake is auto-matically released if all of the following condi-tions are met:
RThe engine is running
RThe transmission is in position[or^andyou depress the accelerator pedal or shiftfrom position]to[or^
RThe seat belt is fastened
If the transmission is in position^, the tail-gate must be closed.
If your seat belt is not fastened, the followingconditions must be fulfilled to automaticallyrelease the electric parking brake:
RThe driver's door is closed.
RYou are shifting from transmission position]or have previously driven at speedsgreater than 2 mph (3 km/h)
Ensure that you do not depress the accelera-tor pedal unintentionally. Otherwise, the park-ing brake will be released and the vehicle willstart to move.
Emergency braking
The vehicle can also be braked during anemergency by using the electric parking brake.

When the vehicle has been braked to a stand-still, the electric parking brake is applied.
Parking the vehicle for a long period
If you leave the vehicle parked for longer thanfour weeks, the battery may be damaged byexhaustive discharging.
If you leave the vehicle parked for longer thansix weeks, the vehicle may suffer damage as aresult of lack of use.

If you switch off the ignition while driving,
safety-relevant functions are only available
with limitations, or not at all. This could
affect, for example, the power steering and
the brake boosting effect. You will require
considerably more effort to steer and brake.

ment when driving, you may be distracted
from the traffic situation. You could also
lose control of the vehicle. There is a risk of

Only operate this equipment when the vehi-
cle is stationary.
Observe the legal requirements for the countryin which you are driving. Some jurisdictionsprohibit the driver from using a mobile phonewhile driving a vehicle.
If you make a call while driving, always usehands-free mode. Only operate the telephonewhen the traffic situation permits. If you areunsure, pull over to a safe location and stopbefore operating the telephone.

The ECO display consists of three sections,with an inner and outer area. The sections cor-respond to the following three categories:
CAcceleration(evaluation of theacceleration processes):
Rthe outer area fills up and theinner area lights up green: moder-ate acceleration, especially athigher speeds
Rthe outer area empties and theinner area is gray: sporty acceler-ation
DCoasting(evaluation of all deceler-ation processes):
Rthe outer area fills up and theinner area lights up green: antici-patory driving, keeping your dis-tance and early release of theaccelerator. The vehicle cancoast without use of the brakes.
Rthe outer area empties and theinner area is gray: frequent heavybraking

Have brake pads installed and brake fluidreplaced at a qualified specialist workshop.
If the brake system has only been subject tomoderate loads, you should test the function-ality of your brakes at regular intervals.
You can find a description of Brake Assist(BAS) on (Ypage 61).
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you onlyhave brake pads/linings installed on your vehi-cle which have been approved for Mercedes-Benz vehicles or which correspond to anequivalent quality standard. Brake pads/linings which have not been approved forMercedes-Benz vehicles or which are not of anequivalent quality could affect your vehicle'soperating safety.
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you only usebrake fluid that has been specially approvedfor your vehicle by Mercedes-Benz, or whichcorresponds to an equivalent quality standard.Brake fluid which has not been approved forMercedes-Benz vehicles or which is not of anequivalent quality could affect your vehicle'soperating safety.
Checking brake lining thickness
You can measure the break pad/lining thick-ness using a test gage. Color-coding (green orred) on the test gage allows you to determinewhether the brake pad/lining thickness is stillsufficient. The test gage is in the vehicle docu-ment wallet in the glove box.

Important safety notes
iRACE START must not be used on normalroads. RACE START must only be activatedand used on dedicated road circuits, outsideof public road use.
iRACE START is only available inMercedes‑AMG vehicles.
GWARNING
If you use RACE START, individual tires may
start to spin and the vehicle could skid.
Depending on the selected ESP®mode,
there is an increased risk of skidding and
having an accident. Make sure that no per-
sons, animals or obstacles are within range
of the vehicle.
RACE START enables optimal accelerationfrom a standing start. For this, a suitably high-grip road surface is required and the vehicleand tires must be in good working order.

mation on ESP®(Ypage 63).
Conditions for activation
You can activate RACE START if:
Rthe doors, hood and the trunk lid are closed.
Rthe engine is running and the transmission,all-wheel drive clutch and the engine are atoperating temperature.
Rthe steering wheel is in the straight-aheadposition.
Rthe vehicle is stationary and the brake pedalis depressed (left foot).
Rthe transmission is in position[.

The electronically controlled damping systemworks continuously. This improves drivingsafety and ride comfort.
The damping is tuned individually to eachwheel and depends on:

The suspension setting is adjusted using thecorresponding button in the center console.

Sport mode
The firmer setting of the suspension tuning inSportmode ensures even better contact withthe road. Select this mode when employing asporty driving style, e.g. on winding countryroads.

4MATIC
!Never tow the vehicle with one axle raised.This may damage the differential. Damageof this sort is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty. All wheels mustremain either on the ground or be fullyraised. Observe the instructions for towingthe vehicle with all wheels in full contactwith the ground.
4MATIC, together with ESP®, improves thetraction of your vehicle whenever a drivewheel spins due to insufficient grip.
If you fail to adapt your driving style, 4MATICcan neither reduce the risk of accident noroverride the laws of physics. 4MATIC cannottake account of road, weather and traffic con-ditions. 4MATIC is only an aid. You are respon-sible for the distance to the vehicle in front, forvehicle speed, for braking in good time and forstaying in your lane.
If a drive wheel spins due to insufficient grip:
ROnly depress the accelerator pedal as far asnecessary when pulling away.
RAccelerate less when driving.
iIn wintry driving conditions, the maximumeffect of 4MATIC can only be achieved if youuse winter tires (M+S tires), with snowchains if necessary.

Overview
General notes
!Do not use the space in front of the dis-play for storage. Objects placed here coulddamage the display or impair its function.Avoid any direct contact with the displaysurface. Pressure on the display surfacemay result in impairments to the display,which could be irreversible.
Wearing polarized sunglasses may impair yourability to read the display.
The display has an automatic temperature-controlled switch-off feature. The brightness isautomatically reduced if the temperature istoo high. The display may temporarily switchoff completely.
Cleaning instructions
!Do not touch the display. The display has avery sensitive high-gloss surface; there is arisk of scratching. If you have to clean thescreen, however, use a mild cleaning agentand a soft, lint-free cloth.
The display must be switched off and havecooled down before you start cleaning. Do notapply pressure to the display surface whencleaning it, as this could cause irreversibledamage to the display.

attention to traffic conditions and operate
the equipment when the vehicle is station-
ary.
You must observe the legal requirements forthe country in which you are currently drivingwhen operating the navigation system.
General notes
Among other things, correct functioning of thenavigation system depends on GPS reception.In certain situations, GPS reception may beimpaired, there may be interference or theremay be no reception at all, e.g. in tunnels orparking garages.
Audio 20 is equipped with Garmin®MAP PILOT(see the manufacturer's operating instruc-
tions). The Garmin®MAP PILOT operatinginstructions are stored on the SD card as aPDF file. The SD card box contains a quickguide.

Important safety notes
GWARNING
SD cards are small parts. They can be swal-
lowed and cause choking. This poses an
increased risk of injury or even fatal injury.
Keep the SD card out of the reach of chil-

cal attention immediately.
