Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC
General notes
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC regulatesthe speed and automatically helps you main-tain the distance from the vehicle detected infront. Vehicles are detected with the aid of theradar sensor system. Active Distance AssistDISTRONIC brakes automatically to avoidexceeding the set speed or to maintain thedesignated distance from the vehicle in front.
Change into a lower gear in good time on longand steep downhill gradients. This is especiallyimportant if the vehicle is laden. By doing so,you will make use of the braking effect of theengine. This relieves the load on the brake sys-tem and prevents the brakes from overheatingand wearing too quickly.
If Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC detectsthat there is a risk of a collision with the vehi-cle in front, you will be warned visually andaudibly. Active Distance Assist DISTRONICcannot prevent a collision without your inter-vention. An intermittent warning tone will thensound and the distance warning lamp will lightup in the instrument cluster. Brake immedi-ately in order to increase the distance fromthe vehicle in front, or take evasive action, pro-vided it is safe to do so.
For Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC toassist you when driving, the radar sensor sys-tem must be operational.
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC operates inthe speed range between 0 mph (0 km/h) and120 mph (200 km/h).
Do not use Active Distance Assist DISTRONICon roads with steep gradients.
As Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC trans-mits radar waves, it can resemble the radardetectors of the responsible authorities. Youcan refer to the relevant chapter in the Opera-tor's Manual if questions are asked about this.

situation and be ready to brake.
GWARNING
Distance keeping assistant cannot always
clearly identify other road users and com-
plex traffic situations.
In such cases, distance keeping assistant
can:
Raccelerate or brake the vehicle unexpect-
edly
Rintervene unexpectedly
There is a risk of an accident.
Continue to drive carefully and be ready to
brake, especially if distance keeping assis-
tant warns you.
GWARNING
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC brakes
your vehicle with up to 50% of the maximum
possible deceleration. If this deceleration is
not sufficient, Active Distance Assist
DISTRONIC alerts you with a visual and
acoustic warning. There is a risk of an acci-
dent.
Adjust your speed in these cases and main-
tain sufficient distance.
Apply the brakes yourself and/or take eva-
sive action.
!When Active Distance Assist DISTRONICor the HOLD function is activated, the vehi-cle brakes automatically in certain situa-tions.
To avoid damage to the vehicle, deactivateActive Distance Assist DISTRONIC and theHOLD function in the following or similar sit-uations:
Rwhen towing the vehicle
Rin the car wash
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC can neitherreduce the risk of an accident if you fail to
adapt your driving style, nor override the lawsof physics. Active Distance Assist DISTRONICcannot take into account road, weather or traf-fic conditions. Active Distance AssistDISTRONIC is only an aid. You are responsiblefor the distance to the vehicle in front, forvehicle speed, for braking in good time and forstaying in your lane.
Do not use Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC:
RIn road and traffic conditions which do notallow you to maintain a constant speed, e.g.in heavy traffic or on winding roads
Ron slippery road surfaces. Braking or accel-erating could cause the drive wheels to losetraction and the vehicle could then skid
RIn poor visibility, e.g. due to fog, heavy rainor snow
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC may notdetect narrow vehicles driving in front, e.g.motorcycles, or vehicles driving in a staggeredformation.
In particular, the detection of obstacles can beimpaired if:
RThere is dirt on the sensors or anything elsecovering the sensors
RThere is snow or heavy rain
RThere is interference by other radar sources
RThere are strong radar reflections, for exam-ple in parking garages
If Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC no longerdetects a vehicle in front, Distance PilotDISTRONIC may unexpectedly accelerate tothe speed stored.
This speed may:
RBe too high if you are driving in a turninglane or an exit lane
RBe so high when driving in the right-handlane that you overtake vehicles in the left-hand lane
RBe so high in the left lane that you passvehicles driving on the right
If there is a change of drivers, advise the newdriver of the speed stored.

iThe last speed stored remains stored untilyou switch off the engine.
iActive Distance Assist DISTRONIC is notdeactivated if you depress the acceleratorpedal. If you accelerate to overtake, ActiveDistance Assist DISTRONIC adjusts the vehi-cle's speed to the last speed stored afteryou have finished overtaking.
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is automati-cally deactivated if:
Ryou engage the electric parking brake or ifthe vehicle is automatically secured with theelectric parking brake

If Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is deacti-vated automatically, you will hear a warningtone. TheActive Distance Assist OffActive Distance Assist Offmessage will appear on the multifunction dis-play for approximately five seconds.

Assist DISTRONIC
General notes
The following contains descriptions of certainroad and traffic conditions in which you mustbe particularly attentive. In such situations,brake if necessary. Active Distance AssistDISTRONIC will then be deactivated.
Cornering, going into and coming out of
a bend
The ability of Active Distance AssistDISTRONIC to detect vehicles when corneringis limited. Your vehicle may brake unexpect-edly or late.
Vehicles traveling on a different line
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC may notdetect vehicles that are not driving in the mid-dle of their lane. The distance to the vehicle infront will be too short.
Other vehicles changing lanes
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC has notdetected the vehicle cutting in yet. The dis-tance to this vehicle will be too short.
Narrow vehicles

Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC has not yetdetected the vehicle in front on the edge ofthe road because of its narrow width. The dis-tance to the vehicle in front will be too short.
Obstructions and stationary vehicles
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC does notbrake for obstacles or stationary vehicles. If,for example, the detected vehicle turns a cor-ner and an obstacle or stationary vehicle isrevealed, Active Distance Assist DISTRONICwill not brake for them.
Crossing vehicles
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC may mis-takenly detect vehicles that are crossing yourlane.
If you activate Active Distance AssistDISTRONIC under the following conditions, thevehicle could pull away unintentionally:
Rat traffic lights with crossing traffic, forexample
Rif there is a vehicle in front, after a crossing,with the HOLD function activated
HOLD function
General notes
The HOLD function can assist the driver in thefollowing situations:
RWhen pulling away, especially on steepslopes
RWhen maneuvering on steep slopes
RWhen waiting in traffic
The vehicle is kept stationary without thedriver having to depress the brake pedal.
The braking effect is canceled and the HOLDfunction deactivated when you depress theaccelerator pedal to pull away.
Important safety notes
GWARNING
If the vehicle is only braked using the HOLD
function, the vehicle may roll away in the fol-
lowing situations when you leave the vehi-
cle:
Rif there is a malfunction in the system or
in the voltage supply
Rif the HOLD function is deactivated by
depressing the accelerator pedal or brake
pedal, e.g. by a vehicle occupant
There is a risk of an accident.
Always deactivate the HOLD function and
secure the vehicle against rolling away
before you leave it.
!When Active Distance Assist DISTRONICor the HOLD function is activated, the vehi-cle brakes automatically in certain situa-tions.

Selecting the Comfort or Economy
drive programs
In theComfortandEconomydrive programs,the driving characteristics of your vehicle aremore comfortable. Select one of these driveprograms if you favor a more comfortable driv-ing style. Also select these drive programswhen driving fast on straight roads, e.g. onstraight stretches of highway.
In urban traffic and stop-start traffic, drive pro-gramCis recommended.
XPress DYNAMIC SELECT buttonCrepeat-edly until theComfortorEconomydriveprogram is selected.
Selecting Sport mode
The firmer setting of the suspension tuning intheSportdrive program ensures even bettercontact with the road. Select this drive pro-gram when employing a sporty driving style,e.g. on winding country roads.
XPress DYNAMIC SELECT buttonCas manytimes as necessary until theSportdriveprogram is selected.
Selecting Sport Plus mode
The firmer suspension settings in theSportPlusdrive program ensure even better contactwith the road. Select this mode when employ-ing a sporty driving style, e.g. on winding coun-try roads or, ideally, when driving on closedrace circuits.
XPress DYNAMIC SELECT buttonCrepeat-edly until theSport Plusdrive program isselected.
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC
Important safety notes
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is an electronicparking aid with ultrasound. It monitors thearea around your vehicle using six sensors inthe front bumper and four sensors in the rearbumper. Parking Assist PARKTRONIC visuallyand audibly indicates the distance betweenyour vehicle and an object.
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is only an aid. It isnot a replacement for your attention to yourimmediate surroundings. You are alwaysresponsible for safe maneuvering, parking andexiting a parking space. Make sure that thereare no persons, animals or objects in themaneuvering area when you are maneuveringor parking.
!When parking, pay particular attention toobjects above or below the sensors, such asflower pots or trailer drawbars.PARKTRONIC does not detect such objectswhen they are in the immediate vicinity ofthe vehicle. You could damage the vehicleor the objects.
The sensors may not detect snow and otherobjects that absorb ultrasonic waves.
Ultrasonic sources such as an automatic carwash, the compressed-air brakes on a truckor a pneumatic drill could causePARKTRONIC to malfunction.
PARKTRONIC may not function correctly onuneven terrain.
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is activated auto-matically when you:
Rswitch on the ignition
Rshift the transmission to position[,^or\\
Rrelease the electric parking brake
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is deactivated atspeeds above 11 mph (18 km/h). It is reacti-vated at lower speeds.

Parking Guidance
Important safety notes
Parking Guidance is an electronic parking aidwith ultrasound. Ultrasound is used to meas-ure the road on both sides of the vehicle. Asuitable parking space is indicated by theparking symbol. You receive steering instruc-tions when parking. You can also still useParking Assist PARKTRONIC (Ypage 153).
Parking Guidance is only an aid. It is not areplacement for your attention to your immedi-ate surroundings. You are always responsiblefor safe maneuvering, parking and exiting aparking space. Make sure that there are nopersons, animals or objects in the maneuver-ing area when you are maneuvering or parking.
GWARNING
If objects are located above the detection
range, Parking Guidance may provide steer-
ing instructions too soon. You may cause a
collision as a result. There is a risk of an
accident.
If objects are located above the detection
range, stop and switch off Parking Assist.
!If they cannot be avoided, drive overobstacles such as curbs slowly and at anobtuse angle. Otherwise, you may damagethe wheels or tires.
When Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is switchedoff, Parking Guidance is also unavailable.
Parking Guidance may also display spaces notsuitable for parking, e.g.:
Rwhere parking or stopping is prohibited
Rin front of driveways or entrances and exits
Ron unsuitable surfaces

Reversing camera
General notes
Rear view cameraCis an optical parking andmaneuvering aid. It shows the area behindyour vehicle with guide lines in the multimediasystem.
The area behind the vehicle is displayed as amirror image, as in the rear view mirror.
iThe text shown in the multimedia systemdisplay depends on the language setting.The following are examples of rear viewcamera displays in the multimedia system.
Important safety notes
The rear view camera is only an aid. It is not areplacement for your attention to your immedi-ate surroundings. You are always responsiblefor safe maneuvering and parking. Make surethat there are no persons, animals or objectsin the maneuvering area when you are maneu-vering or parking.
Under the following circumstances, the rearview camera will not function, or will functionin a limited manner:
Rif the trunk lid is open
Rin heavy rain, snow or fog
Rat night or in very dark places
Rif the camera is exposed to very bright light
Rif the area is lit by fluorescent bulbs or LEDlighting (the display may flicker)
Rif there is a sudden change in temperature,e.g. when driving into a heated garage inwinter
Rif the camera lens is dirty or obstructed.Observe the notes on cleaning(Ypage 250)
Rif the rear of your vehicle is damaged. In thiscase, have the camera position and settingchecked at a qualified specialist workshop.
The field of vision and other functions of therear view camera may be restricted due toadditional accessories on the rear of the vehi-cle (e.g. license plate holder, bicycle rack).
On vehicles with height-adjustable chassis,leaving the standard height can result in inac-curacies in the guide lines, depending on tech-nical conditions.
iThe contrast of the display may be affec-ted by the sudden presence of sunlight orother light sources, e.g. when exiting agarage. Pay particular attention in this situa-tion.
iIf usability is severely restricted, e.g. dueto pixel errors, have the display repaired orreplaced.
iThe rear view camera is protected fromraindrops and dust by means of a flap. Whenthe rear view camera is activated, this flapopens.
The flap closes again when:
Ryou have finished the maneuvering proc-ess
Ryou switch off the engine
Ryou open the trunk
Observe the notes on cleaning(Ypage 250).
For technical reasons, the flap may remainopen briefly after the rear view camera hasbeen deactivated.
Activating/deactivating the rear view

GWARNING
Blind Spot Assist does not react to:
Rvehicles overtaken too closely on the side,
placing them in the blind spot area
Rvehicles which approach with a large
speed differential and overtake your vehi-
cle
As a result, Blind Spot Assist may not give
warnings in such situations. There is a risk
of an accident.
Always observe the traffic conditions care-
fully, and maintain a safe lateral distance.
Blind Spot Assist is only an aid. It may fail todetect some vehicles and is no substitute forattentive driving. Always ensure that there issufficient distance to the side for other roadusers and obstacles.

Radar sensors
The radar sensors for Blind Spot Assist areintegrated into the rear bumper. Make surethat the bumpers are free from dirt, ice orslush. The sensors must not be covered, forexample by cycle racks or overhanging loads.Following a severe impact or in the event ofdamage to the bumpers, have the function ofthe radar sensors checked at a qualified spe-cialist workshop. Blind Spot Assist may no lon-ger work properly.
Monitoring range of the sensors
In particular, the detection of obstacles can beimpaired if:
Rthere is dirt on the sensors or anything elsecovering the sensors
Rthere is poor visibility, e.g. due to fog, heavyrain, snow or spray
Rthere are narrow vehicles, e.g. motorcyclesor bicycles
Rthe road has very wide lanes
Rthe road has narrow lanes
Ryou are not driving in the middle of the lane
Rthere are barriers or other road boundaries
Vehicles in the monitoring range are then notindicated.
Blind Spot Assist monitors the area up to 10 ft(3.0 m) behind your vehicle and directly nextto your vehicle, as shown in the diagram. Forthis purpose, Blind Spot Assist uses radar sen-sors in the rear bumper.
If the lanes are narrow, vehicles driving in thelane beyond the lane next to your vehicle maybe indicated, especially if the vehicles are notdriving in the middle of their lane. This may bethe case if there are vehicles driving at theinner edge of their lanes.
Due to the nature of the system:
Rwarnings may be issued in error when driv-ing close to crash barriers or similar solidlane borders.
Rwarnings may be interrupted when drivingalongside long vehicles, e.g. trucks, for aprolonged time.

Indicator and warning display
CYellow indicator lamp/red warning lamp
Blind Spot Assist is not active at speeds belowapproximately 20 mph (30 km/h). Vehicles inthe monitoring range are then not indicated.
When Blind Spot Assist is activated, indicatorlampCin the exterior mirrors lights up yellowat speeds of up to 20 mph(30 km/h). Atspeeds above 20 mph (30 km/h), the indicatorlamp goes out and Blind Spot Assist is opera-tional.
If a vehicle is detected within the blind spotmonitoring range at speeds above 20 mph(30 km/h), warning lampCon the corre-sponding side lights up red. This warning isalways emitted when a vehicle enters the blindspot monitoring range from behind or from theside. When you overtake a vehicle, the warningonly occurs if the difference in speed is lessthan 7 mph (12 km/h).
The yellow indicator lamp goes out if reversegear is engaged. In this event, Blind SpotAssist is no longer active.
The brightness of the indicator/warning lampsis adjusted automatically according to theambient light.
Collision warning
If a vehicle is detected in the monitoring rangeof Blind Spot Assist and you switch on the cor-responding turn signal, a double warning tonesounds. Red warning lampCflashes. If theturn signal remains on, vehicles detected areindicated by the flashing of red warninglampC. There are no further warning tones.
Switching on Blind Spot Assist
XMake sure that Blind Spot Assist(Ypage 175) is activated in the on-boardcomputer.
XTurn the SmartKey to positionHin the igni-tion lock.Warning lampsCin the exterior mirrorslight up red for approximately 1.5 secondsand then turn yellow.
Lane Keeping Assist
General notes
Lane Keeping Assist monitors the area in frontof your vehicle with cameraC, which ismounted at the top of the windshield. LaneKeeping Assist detects lane markings on theroad and warns you before you leave your laneunintentionally.
If you selectkmkmon the on-board computer intheDisplay Unit Speed-/OdometerDisplay Unit Speed-/Odometerfunc-tion (Ypage 176), Lane Keeping Assist isactive starting at a speed of 60 km/h. If themilesmilesdisplay unit is selected, the assistancerange begins at 40 mph.
A warning may be given if a front wheel passesover a lane marking. It will warn you by meansof intermittent vibration in the steering wheelfor up to 1.5 seconds.

Lane Keeping Assist cannot always clearly

In such cases, Lane Keeping Assist can:

return the vehicle to the original lane. There
is a risk of an accident.
You should always steer, brake or accelerate
yourself, in particular if warned by Lane
Keeping Assist.
If you fail to adapt your driving style, LaneKeeping Assist can neither reduce the risk ofan accident nor override the laws of physics.Lane Keeping Assist cannot take into accountthe road, traffic and weather conditions. LaneKeeping Assist is merely an aid. You areresponsible for the distance to the vehicle infront, for vehicle speed, for braking in goodtime and for staying in your lane.
The Lane Keeping Assist does not keep thevehicle in the lane.
The system may be impaired or may not func-tion if:
Rthere is poor visibility, e.g. due to insuffi-cient illumination of the road, or due tosnow, rain, fog or spray
Rthere is glare, e.g. from oncoming traffic,the sun or reflections (e.g. when the roadsurface is wet)
Rthe windshield is dirty, fogged up, damagedor covered, for instance by a sticker, in thevicinity of the camera
Rthere are no, several or unclear lane mark-ings for a lane, e.g. in areas with road con-struction work
Rthe lane markings are worn away, dark orcovered up, e.g. by dirt or snow
Rthe distance to the vehicle in front is toosmall and the lane markings thus cannot bedetected
Rthe lane markings change quickly, e.g. lanesbranch off, cross one another or merge
Rthe road is narrow and winding
Rthere are strong shadows cast on the road
Switching on Lane Keeping Assist
XSwitch on Lane Keeping Assist using the on-board computer; to do so, selectStandardStandardorAdaptiveAdaptive(Ypage 175).If you drive at speeds above 40 mph(60 km/h) and lane markings are detected,the lines in the assistance graphics display(Ypage 175) are shown in green. LaneKeeping Assist is ready for use.

In order that you are warned only when neces-sary and in good time if you cross the lanemarking, the system recognizes certain condi-tions and warns you accordingly.

Rthe system recognizes solid lane markings
The warning vibration occurs later if:
