CAUTION•When the air conditioning is operated in
AUTO mode where the temperature con- trol dial is set to the max. hot or the max.
cool position (for vehicles with automatic air conditioning).
• When the air conditioning is ON, the pas-
senger compartment temperature rises and
the air conditioning compressor operates to lower the temperature.
• Mode selection dial is set to the demister
position.
Refer to “Demisting of the windscreen and door windows: For quick demisting”
on page 7-09.
• Electric power consumption is high, such
as when the rear window demister or oth- er electrical components are operating or
the blower speed is set to a high setting.
• Driver’s seat belt is unfastened.
• Driver’s door is open.NOTEl If the “Auto Stop & Go (AS&G) OFF”
switch is pressed to deactivate the Auto Stop
& Go (AS&G) system while the engine is
stopped automatically, the engine will not restart automatically even if the clutch pedal
is depressed.NOTEl If the bonnet is opened when the engine is
automatically stopped, the “” display/ in-
dicator will blink, the buzzer will sound, and the engine will not restart automatically. To
restart the engine, fully depress the clutch pedal while depressing the brake pedal, andthen turn the ignition switch to the“START” position or press the engine

l When the engine restarts automatically, the
audio volume may temporarily decrease.

The Auto Stop & Go (AS&G) system is auto-
matically activated when the ignition switch
is turned to the “ON” position. You can deac-
tivate the system by pressing the “Auto Stop & Go (AS&G) OFF” switch.
When the Auto Stop & Go (AS&G) system is deactivated, the “
” display/indicator will
turn on.
To reactivate the Auto Stop & Go (AS&G)
system, press the “Auto Stop & Go (AS&G)
OFF” switch; the display/indicator will turn

“P” PARK
This position locks the transmission to pre- vent the vehicle from moving. The engine
can be started in this position.
“R” REVERSE
This position is to back up.
CAUTIONl Never shift into the “P” (PARK) or “R”
(REVERSE) position while the vehicle is in motion to avoid transmission damage.
“N” NEUTRAL
At this position the transmission is disengag-
ed. It is the same as the neutral position on amanual transmission, and should only be used when the vehicle is stationary for an ex-
tended length of time during driving, such as
in a traffic jam.
WARNINGl Never move the selector lever to the “N”
(Neutral) position while driving. A seriousaccident could occur since you could acci-dentally move the lever into the “P”(Park) or “R” (Reverse) position or you
will lose engine braking.
l On a gradient the engine should be star-
ted in the “P” (Park) position, not in the
“N” (Neutral) position.
l To prevent rolling, always keep your foot
on the brake pedal when the vehicle is in
“N” (Neutral) position, or when shifting into or out of “N” (Neutral) position.
“D” DRIVE
This position is used for most city and high-
way driving. The transmission will automati-
cally change its gear depending on road and driving conditions.
CAUTIONl To prevent transmission damage, never shift
into the “D” (Drive) position from the “R”(Reverse) position while the vehicle is in motion.
“L” LOW
This position is for driving up very steep hills
and for engine braking at low speeds when
driving down steep hills.

While the vehicle is stopped or being driven
with the selector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) or
“L” (LOW) position, sports mode can be se- lected by pulling one of the shift paddles to-wards you.

In sports mode, rapid shifting is possible sim-
ply by operating the shift paddle.
Unlike the M/T, sports mode allows shifting
with the accelerator pedal depressed.- (SHIFT DOWN)+ (SHIFT UP)
+ (SHIFT UP)
The transmission shifts up by one gear with
each operation.

- (SHIFT DOWN)
The transmission shifts down by one gear
with each operation.
To return to “D” (Drive) or “L” (Low) opera- tion, pull the shift paddle on the + (SHIFT UP) side for longer than 2 seconds.
When returning to “D” (Drive) or “L” (Low)
operation, the selector lever position display will change to “D” (Drive) or “L” (Low) po-sition.
CAUTIONl In sports mode, the driver must execute up-
ward shifts in accordance with prevailingroad conditions, taking care to keep the en-
gine speed below the red zone.
l Repeated continuous operation of the shift
paddles will continuously switch shift posi-
tion.
l Do not use the left- and right-hand shift pad-
dles at the same time. Doing so could cause a shift of gear ratio that you do not expect.NOTEl The upward shift may be made automatical-
ly in sports mode when the engine revolu-
tions rises and approaches the tachometer’s
red zone (the red-coloured part of the tach- ometer dial).
l In sports mode, only the
6 forward gears can
be selected. To reverse or park the vehicle, move the selector lever to the “R” (Reverse)
or “P” (Park) position as required.
l To maintain good running performance, the
transmission may refuse to perform an up- shift when the shift paddle on the “+ (SHIFTUP)” side is pulled at certain vehicle speeds.
Also, to prevent over-revving of the engine,
the transmission may refuse to perform a downshift when the shift paddle on the “—
(SHIFT DOWN)” side is pulled at certain vehicle speeds. When this happens, a buzzer
sounds to indicate that a downshift is not go- ing to take place.

NOTElIn sports mode, downward shifts are made
automatically when the vehicle slows down.
When the vehicle stops, 1 st
gear is automati-
cally selected.
l When the selector lever is in the “D” (Drive)
position and sports mode is selected, the ve-
hicle will automatically return to “D” (Drive) operation if the vehicle is stopped.
l When the selector lever is in the “L” (Low)
position and sports mode is selected, the ve-
hicle will stay in sports mode and not return to “L” (Low) operation even if the vehicle is
stopped.
l When driving away on a slippery road, pull
the shift paddle on the “+ (SHIFT UP)” side.
This cause the transmission to shift into the
2 nd
gear which is better for smooth driving
away on a slippery road. Pull the shift pad- dle on the “— (SHIFT DOWN)” side to shift
back to the 1 st
gear.
l When the shift paddle is operated with the
selector lever in the “L” (Low) position, gear
is not shifted because the selectable shift

In sports mode, the currently selected posi-
tion is displayed on the multi-information
displayNOTEl While driving in sport mode, the display
may change to show “D” and shifting in sports mode may no longer be possible.
This indicates that controls to drive in the
“D” position are operating normally in order to lower the temperature of the A/T fluid; it
does not indicate a malfunction. Once the
temperature of the A/T fluid drops, shifting
in the sports mode will be possible again.NOTEl The gearshift indicator shows recommended
gearshift points for fuel-efficient driving. It
shows a “

CAUTIONlIf malfunction occurs in the
A/T while driv-
ing, the warning display or the warning
display will appear on the information screen in the multi-information display.
In this case, immediately park your vehicle
in a safe place and follow these procedures:

When
warning display is showing
The A/T fluid is overheating.
Stop the vehicle in a safe place, place the se- lector lever in the “P” (Park) position, and open the bonnet with the engine running toallow the engine to cool down.
After a while, confirm that the
warning
display is no longer showing. It is safe to
continue driving if the display is no longer showing. If the warning display remains,contact a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Author-
ized Service Point immediately.

When
warning display is showing
It may be that there is something unusual happening in the A/T, causing a safety de-
vice to activate. Immediately have your ve-
hicle checked at an authorized MITSUBISHI MOTORS Service Point.
Operation of the A/T

CAUTIONl Before selecting a gear with the engine run-
ning and the vehicle stationary, fully depressthe brake pedal to prevent the vehicle from
creeping.
The vehicle will begin to move as soon as the gear is engaged, especially when the en-
gine speed is high, at fast idle or with the air conditioning operating, the brakes should
only be released when you are ready to drive
away.
l Depress the brake pedal with the right foot at
all times.
Using the left foot could cause driver move- ment delay in case of an emergency.
l To prevent sudden acceleration, never race
the engine when shifting from the “P”
(PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) position.
l Operating the accelerator pedal while the
other foot is resting on the brake pedal will affect braking efficiency and may cause pre-
mature wear of brake pads.
l Use the selector lever in the correct shift po-
sition in accordance with driving conditions.
Never coast downhill backward with the se-
lector lever in the “D” (DRIVE), “L” (LOW)
position or coast forward with the selector
lever in the “R” (REVERSE) position.
The engine may stop and the unexpected in- crease in brake pedal effort and steeringwheel weight could lead to an accident.CAUTIONl Do not race the engine with brake pedal
pressed when the vehicle is stationary.
This can damage the A/T.
Also, when you depress the accelerator ped- al while holding down the brake pedal withthe selector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) posi-
tion, the engine revolutions may not rise as high as when performing the same operation
with the selector lever in the “N” (NEU-

3.Insert a straight blade (or minus) screw-
driver with a cloth over its tip into notch (A) of the cover. Pry gently as shown to remove the cover.
4. Depress the brake pedal with the right
foot.
5. Insert a straight blade (or minus) screw-
driver in the shiftlock release hole (B).Shift the selector lever to the “N” (NEU-
TRAL) position while pressing the straight blade (or minus) screwdriver

If the ambient temperature is low, the selec-
tor lever position display on the multi-infor- mation display may blink when the selector lever is placed in the “D” (DRIVE), “Ds”(DOWNSHIFT & SPORTY DRIVING), “L”
(LOW) or “R” (REVERSE) position immedi- ately after the engine has been started. This
indicates that the transmission requires
warming up.
While the display is blinking, the vehicle will
not move, because the transmission keeps disengaging until the warm up is completedeven if the selector lever is placed in the “D”,
“Ds”, “L” or “R” position.
When the selector lever position display is blinking, perform the following procedure: 1. Depress the brake pedal with your right
foot and place the selector lever in the
“N” (NEUTRAL) position for several seconds.
2. Keep depressing the brake pedal and
then place the selector lever in the “D”
(DRIVE), “Ds” (DOWNSHIFT & SPORTY DRIVING), “L” (LOW) or “R” (REVERSE) position. If the selector
lever position display stops blinking, the
warm-up is completed and the transmis-
sion will function normally.
3. If the display is still blinking, repeat
steps 1 and 2 above.NOTEl While the selector lever position display is
blinking, a buzzer will sound intermittently.Selector lever positions

“P” PARK

In this case, follow these procedures:

The CVT fluid is overheating. The engine control may activate to lower the CVT fluid
CAUTIONtemperature, causing the engine revolutions and vehicle speed to decrease. In this case,take one of the following measures.
• Slow down your vehicle.
• Stop the vehicle in a safe place, place the
selector lever in the “P” (Park) position,and open the bonnet with the engine run-
ning to allow the engine to cool down.
After a while, confirm that the
warning
display is no longer showing. It is safe to
continue driving if the display is no longer showing. If the warning display remains orappears frequently, we recommend you to have your vehicle inspected.

warning display is showing]
It may be that there is something unusual happening in the CVT, causing a safety de-
vice to activate. We recommend that you have your vehicle inspected immediately.

Drive mode-selector
The drive mode can be changed by pressing
the drive mode-selector while the ignition switch or the operation mode is in ON.
By pressing the drive mode-selector, the
drive mode can be changed in order of “2WD”, “4WD” AUTO and “4WD LOCK”.

The drive mode is displayed as an interrupt
display on the information screen in the mul- ti-information display when the drive mode ischanged.
After a few seconds, the information screen
will then return to its prior display.

the front wheels spinning on a snowy road or
in similar conditions. The vehicle could
lunge in an unexpected direction.
l Driving on dry, paved roads in “4WD

l Do not drive with the tyres spinning in
“2WD” mode.
Doing so could generate heat in the drive- system components.NOTEl The drive mode can be switched while driv-
