WA R N I N G When attempting to rock your vehicle out of
a stuck position, be sure that no one is
near the vehicle. The rocking motion may c
ause the vehicle to
suddenly lurch forward or backward, possibly injuring bystanders. Avoid revving the engine or spinning the
wheels. Prolonged efforts to free a stuck ve
hicle may result in overheating and transa
xle failure.
If the vehicle remains stuck after several rocking at
tempts, have a towing service pull the vehicle out.

A longer warm up period will only con- sume extra fuel. The engine is warmed up enough for driv- ing when the bar graph of engine coolanttemperature display starts to move. Refer to “Engine coolant temperature display” on page 5-147.
Your vehicle is equipped with an electroni- cally controlled fuel injection system. This system automatically controls fuel injection. There is usually no need to depress the accel-erator pedal when starting the engine.
To prevent battery drain, wait a few seconds between attempts to restart the engine. 1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened. 2. Make sure the parking brake is applied.3. Press and hold the brake pedal down firmly with your right foot. 4. Make sure the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) position. 5. Press the engine switch. 6. Confirm that all warning lights and warn- ing displays are functioning properly.
After several attempts, you may experience that the engine still does not start. 1. Make sure that all electric devices, such as lights, air conditioning blower and rearwindow defogger, are turned off. 2. While depressing the brake pedal, press the accelerator pedal halfway and hold itthere, then crank the engine. Release the accelerator pedal, immediately after the engine starts.
WA R N I N G Never run the engine in a closed or poorly ventilated area any longer than is neededto move your vehicle out of the area. Car- bon monoxide gas, which is odorless and extremely poisonous, could build up andcause serious injury or death.CAUTION Do not push-start the vehicle.Do not run the engine
at high rpms or drive
at high speeds until the engine has had a chance to warm up.
Starting the engine
NOTE
After the engine has not started for a while, the brake pedal effort needed to start the engine may become greater. If this occurs, depress the brake pedal more firmly than usual.NOTE
The engine can only be started when the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) position. For safety reasons, the engine should be started when the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) position in which the driving wheels lock.
NOTE
Minor noises may be heard on engine start- up. These will disappear as the engine warms up.

When the accelerator pedal is depressed slowly while all of the following conditionsare met, the Electric parking brake is auto- matically released. The engine is running. The selector lever is in the “D” (DRIVE) or the “R” (REVERSE) position. The driver’s seat belt is fastened.
When the Electric parking brake is released, the brake warning light (red) and the indicator light on the Electric parking brake switch go off. Before driving, be sure that the parking brake is released and brake warning light is off.
When the ignition switch or the operation mode is other than ON, if the parking brake is applied, the Electric parking brake indica- tor light comes on for a while. If the Electric parking brake switch is repeat- edly operated in a short time, the following warning display will appear in the multi-information display and the Electric parking brake will temporarily stop working. In such case, wait for approximately 1 minute untilthe warning display disappears, and operate the Electric parking brake switch again. The brake warning light (red) and the indica- tor light on the Electric parking brake switch may blink. This does not indicate a malfunc- tion, the lights go off when/if the Electricparking brake is released. Depending on the situation, the Electric parking brake may be applied automatically. Refer to “Brake auto hold” on page 5-74.NOTE
To release
Manual operation 1. Make sure that the ignition switch is in
the “ON” position or the operation mode is ON.
2. Press down the Electric parking brake
switch while depressing the brake pedal.
Automatic operation
CAUTION After the Electric parking brake switch has been operated to apply or release the Electric parking brake, if the brake warning light(red) and the indicator light on the Electric parking brake switch remain blinking or the Electric parking brake warning light (yellow)remain illuminated, the Electric parking brake system may be malfunctioning and the parking brake may not be applied orreleased. Immediately park your vehicle in a safe place and contact the nearest authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facilityof your choice. If a vehicle is driven without releasing the parking brake, the brake will overheat, resulting in ineffective braking and possible brake failure. If the brake warning light (red) does not go off after the parking brake has been released, the brake system may be malfunctioning. Contact the nearest authorized MitsubishiMotors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.

[Except for vehicles equipped with the F. A . S . T. - k e y ] Do not operate the starter motor continu- ously for longer than
15 seconds as this
could run the battery down or damage the starter motor. If the engine does not start, turn the ignition switch back to the“OFF”, wait a few seconds, and then tryagain. Trying repeatedly with the engine or starter motor still
turning will damage
the starter mechanism. If the engine will not start because the bat- tery is weak or discharged, refer to “Jump-starting the engine” (on page 8-2)for instructions. A longer warm up period will only con- sume extra fuel. The engine is warmed upenough for driving when the bar graph of engine coolant temperature display starts to move or the low coolant temperatureindicator goes out. Refer to “Engine cool- ant temperature display” on page 5-147.
This model is equipped with an electronically controlled fuel injection system. This is a sys- tem that automatically controls fuel injection. There is usually no need to depress the accel- erator pedal when starting the engine. The starter should not be run for more than15 seconds at a time. To prevent battery drain, wait a few seconds between attempts to restart the engine. 1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened.
2. Insert the ignition key. 3. Press and hold the brake pedal down firmly with your right foot. 4. Make sure the selector lever is in the “P”(PARK) position. 5. Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” posi- tion and make certain that all warninglights are functioning properly before starting the engine. 6. Turn the ignition switch to the “START”position without pressing the acceleratorpedal. Release the ignition switch when the engine starts.
After several attempts, you may experience that the engine still does not start. 1. Make sure that all electric devices, such as lights, air conditioning blower and rearwindow defogger, are turned off.
Tips for starting
WA R N I N G Never run the engine in a closed or poorly ventilated area any longer than is needed to move your vehicle out of the area. Car- bon monoxide gas, which is odorless and extremely poisonous, could build up andcause serious injury or death.CAUTION Do not push-start the vehicle.Do not run the engine at high revolutions or drive at high speeds until the engine has hada chance to warm up. Release the ignition switch as soon as the engine starts. Otherwise, the starter motor will be damaged

Your vehicle is equipped with power brakes for more braking force with less brake pedaleffort. Your brakes are designed to operate at full capacity, even if the power assist is not beingused. If the power assist is not being used, the effort needed to press the brake pedal is greater. If you should lose the power assist for some reason, the brakes will still work. If the power brake unit
or either of the two
brake hydraulic systems stops working prop- erly, the rest of the brake system will still work, but the vehicle will not slow down asquickly. You will know this has happened if you find you need to press the brake down farther, orharder when slowing down or stopping, or if the brake warning light and the warning dis- play in the multi-information display comeon.
N00550700124
The disc brakes have an alarm that makes ametallic squeal when the brake pads haveworn down enough to need service. If you hear this sound, have the brake pads replaced at an authorized Mitsubishi Motorsdealer or a repair facility of your choice.
N00592000048
When the vehicle is stopped at traffic lightsetc., the vehicle can be held stationary with the brake auto hold system even if you release your foot from the brake pedal. When the accelerator pedal is depressed, the brakes are released.
CAUTION It is important not to drive the vehicle with your foot resting on the brake pedal when braking is not required. This practice can result in very high brake temperatures, pre- mature lining wear, and possible damage tothe brakes.
Power brakes
WA R N I N G Never coast downhill with the engine OFF. Keep the engine running whenever your vehicle is in motion. If you turn off the engine while driving, the power brake booster will stop working and your brakeswill not work as well. If the power assist is lost or if either brake hydraulic system stops working properly, take your vehicle to an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil-ity of your choice immediately.
Brake pad wear alarm
WA R N I N G Driving with worn brake pads will make it harder to stop, and can cause an accident.
Brake auto hold
(if so equipped)
WA R N I N G Do not overly rely on the brake auto hold system. On steep slope, depress the brake pedal firmly because the system may not hold the vehicle stationary. Never leave the vehicle while it is being stopped by the brake auto hold system. When leaving the vehicle, apply the park- ing brake and move the selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position. Do not use brake auto hold system when driving on slippery roads. The system maynot hold the vehicle stationary and could result in an accident. NOTE
While operating the brake auto hold system, you may hear an operation noise to increase braking force when the system detected themovement of the vehicle. This does not indi- cate a malfunction.

Warning light
Warning display If there is a malfunction in the system, the warning light will come on and the warningdisplay will appear on the information screen in the multi-information display. Under normal conditions, the warning lightcome on when the ignition switch is turned tothe “ON” position or the operation mode is put in ON, and goes off after the engine has started.

WA R N I N GDo not stop the engine while the vehicle is moving. Stopping the engine would make the steering wheel extremely hard to turn, possibly resulting in an accident.NOTE
During repeated full-lock turning of the steering wheel (for example, while you are manoeuvring the vehicle into a parking space), a protection function may be acti-vated to prevent overheating of the power steering system. This function will make the steering wheel gradually harder to turn. Inthis event, limit your tu
rning of the steering
wheel for a while. When the system has cooled down, the steering effort will returnto normal. If you turn the steering wheel while the vehi- cle is stationary with the headlights on, the headlights may become dim. This behavior is not abnormal. The headlights will return totheir original brightness after a short while.
Electric power steering system warning light/display
CAUTION If the warning display appears while the engine is running, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer ora repair facility of your choice as soon as possible. It may become harder to turn the steering wheel.
Active stability control (ASC)
CAUTION Do not over-rely on the ASC. Even the ASC cannot prevent the natural laws of physics from acting on the vehicle. This system, like any other system, has limits and cannot helpyou to maintain traction and control of the vehicle in all circumstances. Reckless driv- ing can lead to accidents. It is the driver’sresponsibillty to drive carefully, This means taking into account the traffic, road and envi- ronmental conditions. Be sure to use the same specified type and size of tire on all four wheels. Otherwise, theASC may not work properly. Do not install any aftermarket limited slip differential (LSD) on your vehicle. The ASC may stop functioning properly.
