After operating the vehicle in rough road con- ditions, be sure to perform the followinginspection and maintenance procedures:  Check that the vehicle has not been dam- aged by rocks, gravel, etc.  Carefully wash the vehicle with water.

owly while lightly
depressing the brake pedal in order to dryout the brakes. If the brakes still do not function properly, contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil-ity of your choice as soon as possible to have the brakes checked.  Remove the insects, dr
ied grass, etc. clog-
ging the radiator core.  After driving through water, check the engine, transaxle and differential oil. If the oil or grease is milky or cloudy because of water cont
amination, it must
be replaced with new oil.  Check the inside of the vehicle. If water entry is found, dry the carpet etc. Inspect the headlights. If water is in the headlight housing, have it drained at an authorized Mitsubishi
Motors dealer or a
repair facility of your choice.

Since the driving torque can be applied to thefour wheels, the driving performance of the vehicle when operating in 4-wheel drive is greatly affected by the
condition of the tires.
Pay close attenti
on to the tires.
 Install only the specified tires on all wheels. Refer to “Tires and wheels” onpage 11-7.  Be sure all four tires and wheels are the same size and type.When it is necessary to replace any of the tires or wheels, replace all four.  All tires should be ro
tated before the wear
difference between the front and rear tires is recognizable.
Good vehicle performance cannot be expected if there is a difference in wear between tires. Refer to “Tire rotation” on page 9-21.  Check the tire inflation pressure regularly.
CAUTIONNever drive through water that is deep enough to cover wheel hubs, axles or exhaustpipe. Do not change th
e selector lever posi-
tion while driving through water. Frequent driving through water can adversely affect the life
span of the vehicle;
consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair faci
lity of your choice and
take the necessary measures to prepare,inspect, and repair the vehicle. After driving through water, apply the brakes to be sure they are
functioning properly. If
the brakes are wet and not functioning prop- erly, dry them out by driving slowly whilelightly depressing the brake pedal. Inspect each part of the vehicle carefully.

and the vehicle ahead.  Before changing lanes, check your mir- rors, blind spots, a
nd use your turn-signal
light.  While driving, watch the behavior of other drivers, bicycl
ists, and pedestrians.
 Always obey applicab
le laws and regula-
tions. Be a polite and alert driver. Alwaysleave room for unexpected events, such as sudden braking.  If you plan to drive in another country, obey their vehicle re
gistration laws and
make sure you will be able to get the right fuel.

 Check the battery. At the same time, check the terminals and wiring. Duringextremely cold weather, the battery will not be as strong. Also, the battery power level may drop beca
use more power is
used for cold starting and driving.
Before driving the vehicle, check to see if the engine runs at the proper speed and ifthe headlights are as bright as normally. Charge or replace the battery if necessary. During extreme cold weather, it is possi-ble that a very low battery could freeze. Warm the engine sufficiently. After start- ing the engine, allow a short warm-up time to distribute oil to all cylinders. Then drive your vehicle slowly.Stay at low speeds at first so that the transaxle, transfer case and rear axle oil have time to spread to all lubricationpoints.  Check the engine antifreeze. If there is not enough coolant because of aleak or from engine
overheating, add Mit-
subishi Motors Genuine Super Long Life Coolant Premium or equivalent.Please read this section in conjunction with the “Engine coolant” on page 9-9.


vehicle serviced by an

choice at regular inter-
vals according to the “WARRANTY AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL”. Check the brake system while driving at a low speed immediately
after starting, espe-
cially when the brakes are wet, to confirm they work normally. A film of water can be formed on the brakediscs and prevent normal braking after driv- ing in heavy rain or through large puddles, or after the vehicle is washed. If this occurs, drythe brakes out by drivi
ng slowly while lightly
depressing the brake pedal.
Driving during cold weather
WA R N I N G The battery gives off explosive hydrogen gas. Any spark or flame can cause the bat- tery to explode, which could cause serious injury or death.Always wear protecti
ve clothes and a face
mask when working with your battery, or let a skilled mechanic do it.
WA R N I N G Never open the radiator cap when the radiator is hot. You could be seriouslyburned.

4. Use the fuse location diagrams and the matching tables, to check the fuse that isrelated to the problem. If the fuse is not blown, something else
must be causing
the problem. Have the system inspectedby your authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair fa
cility of your choice.
5. Insert a new fuse of the same capacity securely into the appropriate slot.

Before replacing the bulb, be sure the light is off. Do not touch the glass part of the new bulb with your bare fingers; the oil from yourskin will stay on the
glass and dim or destroy
the bulb when it gets hot.

CAUTION Never use a fuse with a capacity greater than the one listed or any substitute, such as wire, foil etc. This would
cause the circuit wiring
to heat up and could cause a fire. If the replacement fuse blows again after a short time, have the electrical systemchecked by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair fa
cility of your choice to
find and correct the cause.
Replacement of light bulbs
CAUTION Bulbs are extremely hot immediately after being turned off. When replacing the bulb, wait for it to coolsufficiently before
touching it. You could
otherwise be burned.
 Handle halogen light bul
b with care. The gas
inside a halogen light
bulb is highly pressur-
ized, so dropping, knocking, or scratching ahalogen light bulb can
cause it to shatter.
Never hold the halogen
light bulb with a bare
hand, dirty glove, etc. The oil from your hand could cause the bulb to break the next ti
me the headlights are
used. If the glass surface is dirty, clean it with alcohol and let it dry completely beforeinstalling the bulb.CAUTION Do not install commercially available LED- type bulbs. Commercially available LED- type bulbs could advers
ely affect the opera-
tion of the vehicle, such as by preventing thelights and other vehi
cle equipment from
operating properly.CAUTION

1. When replacing the bulb on the left side of the vehicle, remove the bolts (A) hold- ing down the relay box and the sub fuseblock, and then move them toward the rear of the vehicle.
(if so equipped)
2. Turn the cap (B) counterclockwise to remove it. 3. Turn the socket (C) counterclockwise to remove it, and then pull the bulb out of the socket.
4. To install the bulb, perform the removal steps in reverse.

1. When replacing the bulb on the right side of the vehicle, remove the clip (A) hold-ing down the washer
tank spout and move
the spout toward the rear of the vehicle. 2. Turn the cap (B) counterclockwise to remove it.
3. Turn the bulb (C) counterclockwise to remove it and then while holding downthe tab (D), pull out the bulb (E). 4. To install the bulb, perform the removal steps in reverse.
