Operating the power liftgate

Using the panic alarm

NOTE
 The indicator light (5) comes on each time a button is pressed.
 The F.A.S.T.-key can be used from about 40 feet (12 m) away. However, this distancemay change if your vehicle is near a TVtransmitting tower, a power station, or a radio station.  If the UNLOCK button (2) is pressed when all doors and the liftgate are locked and no doors or the liftgate are opened within about30 seconds, the doors and the liftgate will automatically re-lock.  If the following conditi
ons are observed after
pressing the LOCK (1) or UNLOCK (2) but-ton on the remote control transmitter, the battery in the F.A.S.T.-key may need to be replaced. • The doors and the liftgate cannot be locked or unlocked. • The panic alarm cannot be operated. • The indicator light

Use the following procedure to test the sys- tem: 1. Lower the driver’s window. 2. Arm the system as explained in “Armedstage”. 3. Make sure that the theft-alarm indicator comes on and flashes for approximately 20 seconds. 4. Wait a few seconds and then unlock thedriver’s side door by using the inside door lock knob. Open the door. 5. Make sure that the horn (the siren forvehicles equipped with the interior alarm sensor) sounds intermittently and the headlights blink when
a door is opened.

there, then crank th
e engine. Release the
accelerator pedal, immediately after the engine starts.3. If the engine still will not start, the engine could be flooded with too much gasoline. While depressing the brake pedal, pushthe accelerator pedal all the way down and hold it there, then crank the engine for 5 to 6 seconds. Retu
rn the ignition switch
to the “OFF” or “LOCK” position and release the accelerator pedal. Wait a fewseconds, and then crank the engine again for 5 to 6 seconds while depressing the brake pedal, but do no
t push the accelera-
tor pedal. Release the ignition key if the engine starts. If the
engine fails to start,
repeat these procedures

When the ambient temperature is -22 °F (-30 °C) or lower, it may not be possible to startfrom a standstill even with the selector lever
in the “D” (DRIVE) or “R” (REVERSE) position.This occurs because the transaxle has not warmed up sufficiently

K) position and let the
engine idle for at
least 10 minutes.
The transaxle will wa
rm up, and you will be
able to start normally. Do not leave the vehicle during warm-up operation. The MIVEC engine automatically switches its intake-valve control between a low-speed mode and a high-speed mode in accordance with driving conditions for maximum engineperformance.
NOTE
 Minor noises may be heard on engine start- up. These will disappear as the engine warmsup.

To gain extra acceleration in “D” (DRIVE) position (when passing another vehicle) push
the accelerator to the floor. The automatic transaxle will automatically downshift. For short waiting periods, such as at traffic lights, the vehicle can be
left in gear and held
stationary with the service brake. For longer waiting periods with the engine running, place th
e selector lever in the “N”
(NEUTRAL) position a
nd apply the parking
brake, while holding the vehicle stationary with the service brake.Prior to moving off after having stopped the vehicle, make sure that
the selector lever is in
“D” (DRIVE) position or Sports mode posi-tion.
NOTE
 While driving in sports mode, the sports mode display may change to show “D” andshifting in sports
mode may no longer be
possible. This indicates that controls to drive in the “D” position are operati
ng normally in order
to lower the temperature of the automatic transaxle fluid; it doe
s not indicate a mal-
function. Once the temperature of the auto-matic transaxle fluid
drops, shifting in the
sports mode will be possible again.

CAUTION Before selecting a gear
with the engine run-
ning and the vehicle
stationary, firmly
depress the brake pedal to prevent the vehi-cle from creeping. The vehicle will begin to
move as soon as the
gear is engaged, espe
cially when the engine
speed or idle speed is
high, or with the air
conditioning operating. Do not release the br
ake pedal until you are
ready to drive away. Depress the brake pedal with the right foot at all times.Using the left foot c
ould cause driver move-
ment delay in case of an emergency.
 To prevent sudden acce
leration, never run
the engine at high rpms when shifting fromthe “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL). Operating the accelerator pedal while the other foot is resting on the brake pedal willaffect braking efficiency and may cause pre- mature wear of brake pads. Use the selector lever in the correct shift position in accordance with driving condi- tions.Never coast downhill backward in the driv- ing shift position {“D” (DRIVE), “L” (LOW) position or sports mode} or coastforward in the “R” (REVERSE) position. Engine stopping and increased brake pedal and steering effort could
lead to an accident.
Do not rev the engine
with the brake pedal

Since the driving torque can be applied to thefour wheels, the driving performance of the
vehicle when operating in 4-wheel drive is greatly affected by the condition of the tires. Pay close attenti
on to the tires.
 Install only the specified tires on all wheels. Refer to “Tires and wheels” on page 11-7.  Be sure all four tires and wheels are the same size and type. When it is necessary to replace any of the tires or wheels, replace all four.  All tires should be ro
tated before the wear

Good vehicle performance cannot be expected if there is a difference in wear between tires. Refer to “Tire rotation” onpage 9-20.  Check the tire inflation pressure regularly.

brand that have no wear differences. Using tires of different size,
type, brands or degree
of wear, will increase the differential oil tem-perature and result in possible damage to the driving system. Further, the drive train will be subject to excessi

leading to oil leakage,
component seizure, or
other serious failures.

CAUTION Do not tow 4-wheel drive vehicles with the front or rear wheels on the ground (Type A or Type B) as illustrated. This could result in damage to the drivetra
in, or unstable towing.
If you tow 4-wheel drive vehicles, use TypeC or Type D equipment. Even in “4WD ECO” drive mode, the vehi- cle cannot be towed with the front or the rear wheels on the ground.

During repeated full-lock turning of the steering wheel (for example, while you aremanoeuvring the vehicle into a parkingspace), a protection f
unction may be acti-
vated to prevent overheating of the power steering system. This fu
nction will make the
steering wheel graduall
y harder to turn. In
this event, limit your turning of the steering wheel for a while. When the system hascooled down, the steering effort will return to normal.  If you turn the steering wheel while the vehi- cle is stationary with
the headlights on, the
headlights may become
dim. This behavior
is not abnormal. The he
adlights will return to
their original brightness after a short while.
Electric power steering system warning display
CAUTION If the warning display appears while the engine is running, have
the vehicle inspected
by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of
your choice as soon as
possible. It may become harder to turn thesteering wheel.
Active stability control (ASC)
CAUTION Do not over-rely on the ASC. Even the ASC cannot prevent the natural laws of physics from acting on the vehicle. This system, like any other system, has
limits and cannot help
you to maintain traction and control of the vehicle in all circumstances. Reckless driv- ing can lead to accident
s. It is the driver’s
responsibillty to drive carefully, This means taking into account the traffic, road and envi- ronmental conditions. Be sure to use the same specified type and size of tire on all four
wheels. Otherwise, the
ASC may not work properly. Do not install any af
termarket limited slip
differential (LSD) on your vehicle. The ASC may stop functioning properly.NOTE
 An operation noise may be emitted from the engine compartment in the following situa-tions. The sound is associated with checkingthe operations of the ASC. At this time, you may feel a shock from the brake pedal if you depress it. These do not indicate a malfunc-tion. • When the ignition switch is set to the “ON” position. • When the vehicle is driven for a while after the engine is turned on.
