zIt is the battery to operate the motor andthe air conditioning. In addition to the drive battery, OutlanderPHEV has the auxiliary battery to operatelamps, wipers, etc. zCompact, light-weight lithium ion batterywith high energy density is used for thedrive battery. zThe drive battery has the following char-acteristics.Please read this carefully paying attentionto the following: zThe same as ordinary lithium-ion batter-ies, the battery capacity of the drive bat-tery gradually reduces with time, resultingin reduced cruising range. Depending onthe usage conditions, such as frequentquick acceleration/deceleration,extremely hot weather, storing the vehiclein high ambient temperatures, etc., therate of battery capacity drop will increase.
Refueling (gasoline)
CAUTION zDepending on the opera
ting conditions of
your vehicle, the fuel in the fuel tank maynot be used for a long time and stay in thetank, resulting in deterioration of the fuelquality. As this may af
fect the engine and
fuel system parts, observe the followinginstructions:•Run the engine by pressing the batterycharge switch at least once in 3 months.Refer to “Battery charge switch” on page7-23.• Refuel 20 litres or more of fuel every 6months (to make the total refueling amountin 6 months be 20 litres or more).
zIf refueling of the above
amount is not possi-
ble due to a high fuel level because the vehi-cle has not been used for a long time or forsome other reason, consult a MITSUBISHIMOTORS Authorised Service Point.
Drive battery
WA R N I N G zA sealed lithium ion
high voltage battery
(drive battery) is
adopted for Outlander
PHEV. If the drive battery is disposed ofimproperly, there is a
risk of severe burns
and electrical shock that may result inserious injury or death and there is also arisk of environmental damage.
zNever attempt to use the drive battery forany other purpose.

NOTE
zThe auxiliary battery is automaticallycharged while the ready indicator is illumi-nated or during charge for the drive battery.Refer to “Ready indica
tor” on page 6-37.
zIf the auxiliary battery is flat, the Plug-inHybrid EV system cannot be started.Refer to “Emergency starting” on page 9-2.
Basic knowledge for charg-ing
NOTE
WA R N I N G zTo r e d u c e t h e r i s k o f e l e c t r i c s h o c k o r f i r edue to electric leak,
always use an outlet
protected by a residual current detector, rated for amperage equal to or greaterthan the value specified by MITSUBISHIMOTORS, and that is connected to a dedi-cated branch circuit. If the circuit isshared, and another electrical device isbeing used at the same time the vehicle ischarging, the breaker may trip and thecircuit may cause adverse interference onMCB (Moulded Circui
t Board) and house-
hold electrical appliances such as TVs andaudio systems. zIt is possible to charge even in rain orsnow. However, be sure to pay attention tothe following:

•Do not touch normal charging port, nor-mal charge connector, outlet and plugwith wet hands.•Keep away from water when connectingthe normal charging port, normal chargeconnector, outlet and plug.•Do not perform the ch
arging in the out of
doors when heavy rain, heavy snow, strong winds, and thunder, when a badweather is expected in the future.
zIf water goes into the normal chargingport or the normal charge connector, itcould cause a short ci
rcuit, a fire and an
electric shock. Be sure closing completely the charginglid and the inner lid and do not leave theEV charging cable
in an outdoors.
zIf the connected part of the charging plughas been buried in snow while charging, turn off the hand switch or the breakerconnected with the outlet first, thenremove the snow and disconnect thecharging plug. If your vehicle body hasbeen buried in snow while charging, remove the snow and then disconnect thecharge connector.WA R N I N G
zWhen you perform the normal charging ataway from home, some normal chargersmay not correspond to your vehicle. Con-sult an administrator or a maker of thenormal charger that it corresponds toyour vehicle before using it. Also performnormal charging according to the operat-ing procedure indicated on the body ofnormal charger.CAUTION zDo not attempt to perform a jump start on theauxiliary battery at the same time that thedrive battery is being charged. Doing so maydamage the vehicle or charging cable andcould cause an injury.Refer to “Emergency starting” on page 9-2.NOTE
zTo m a i n t a i n t h e c a p a c i t y o f t h e d ri v e b a t t e r y,the following is recommended:•Fully charge the vehicle in normal chargingevery two weeks.• Do not repeat charging near the full chargelevel.WA R N I N G
zIf your vehicle is not used for a long time, check the energy level gauge every 3months. If the gauge shows 0, charge thedrive battery until some indication appears.Alternately, put the operation mode of thepower switch in “ON” to start the engineautomatically, wait for the engine to stopautomatically, then put the operation modeof the power switch in “OFF”. zIn the event of a electrical power outagewhile charging, charging restarts automati-cally with the restoration of electricity.NOTE

•Only use the EV charging cable that issupplied with the vehicle.•Do not charge another vehicle by the EVcharging cable. The cable may over heatand result in a fire.•When charging outd
oors, make sure to
use an outlet that is protected from waterentering.•Do not perform charging with the carcover.•Do not connect or disconnect the plugand connector with wet hands.•Do not charge the battery if there is arisk of lightning.
zWhen the EV charging cable or the plugare damaged or it cannot connect byentering a foreign substance, do not con-nect the EV charging cable by force. zWhile it is normal for the connector andcharging cable to become warm duringcharging, discontinue use immediately ifthe connector or charging cable becomeshot to the touch. zWhile it is normal for the control box tobecome warm during
charging, discon-
tinue use immediately if the control boxbecomes hot to the touch. zIf abnormal smells are detected or thevehicle produces smoke, quickly stopcharging.WA R N I N G
zDo not perform chargi
ng in a poorly ven-
tilated area or in an
enclosed area. Keep
sparks, cigarettes,
and flames away from
the auxiliary battery.Flammable gas generated from the auxil-iary battery during charging may betrapped, resulting in explosion. If charging is inevitably required, venti-late the area well. zGrasp the normal charge connector whenconnecting or disconn
ecting the EV charg-
ing cable.Grasping the cable may damage the cableand could cause an electric shock, shortcircuit, and/or fire.CAUTION zDuring charging, the cooling fans inside theengine room may automatically be operatedeven if the operation mode of the powerswitch in OFF.Keep your hands away from the cooling fanduring charging. zDo not perform charging from other powersource like a generator.
