7. [Vehicle with the tapered nuts] Install the wheel nuts with their tapered ends facing inward, then tighten by hand until the wheel is no longer loose. [Vehicle with the flange nuts] • Aluminium wheelTemporarily tighten the wheel nuts until their flange section comes in contact with the wheel and it is no longer loose.
• Steel wheel Install the wheel nuts with their tapered ends facing inward, then tighten by hand until the wheel is no longer loose.
WA R N I N G Mount the spare wheel with the valve stem (I) facing outward. If you cannot see the valve stem (I), you have installed the wheel backwards. Operating the vehicle with the spare wheelinstalled backwards can cause vehicle damage and result in an accident.
CAUTION Never apply oil to either the wheel bolts or the nuts or they will tighten too much.NOTE
 Flange nuts can be temporarily used on the compact spare or steel wheel, but returnthem to the original wheel and tire as soon as possible.  If all 4 wheels are changed to steel wheels, use tapered nuts.

It is normal for an engi
ne to use oil. You may
need to add oil between the recommended oilchange intervals. Before starting the engine, check the engine oil level. Refill if necessary. To check the oil level, remove the dipstick, wipe it off, and gently reinsert it all the way. Slowly pull the dipstick straight out andcheck the oil level by checking the upper sur- face of the dipstick. Th
e oil level must not go
above the line on the dipstick. If the level does not reach the line which shows the smallest amount of oil required, remove the oil filler cap on the engine valve cover, and fill to within the “Good” range.

 If it is difficult to verify the oil level, wipe off the dipstick and reinsert it. Wait a moment and then recheck the oil level bychecking the upper surface of the dipstick.

Mitsubishi Motors recommends using only engine oils with the ILSAC certification sym- bol on the front of the container. If you cannot find oils with the ILSAC certi- fication symbol, use an API classification SN or higher oil with the following label.
This mark appears on the top of the oil con- tainer and tells you two important things about the oil. Use engine oil with the proper thickness for the outdoor temperatures where you will bedriving.

Engine Oil is recommended for optimum fuel economy and cold weather starting.If Mitsubishi Motors Genuine 0W-20 Syn- thetic Engine Oil is
not available, 5W-20
grade oils displaying the ILSAC certificationcan be used. However, Mitsubishi Motors Genuine 0W-20 Synthetic Engine Oil should be used at the next oil change to maintainoptimum fuel economy and cold weatherstarting. The oil filter should be
replaced at the time or
mileage specified in the “WARRANTY AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL”. Only use high quality replacement filters onthis vehicle. The manufacturer’s specifica- tions for Genuine Mitsubishi oil filters
 The engine oil will deteriorate rapidly if the vehicle is subjected to severe conditions (for example, repeated operation on rough roads, in mountainous regions, on roads with many uphill and downhill gradients, or over shortdistances). Consequently, the oil will require earlier replacement in accordance with the schedule in the “WARRANTY AND MAIN-TENANCE MANUAL”.

 Do not overfill the reserve tank.  Your vehicle uses a special radiator cap that stays sealed and lets the coolant flow from the reserve tank back to the radiatorwhen the engine cools down. If you need to change the cap, use the exact same kind. Check the coolant freeze point in the radi- ator with the proper gauge, and only when it is safe. If you add antifreeze, the con-tents of the reserve tank must be protected against freezing.  Keep the front of the radiator and con- denser clean.  If the engine coolant temperature does not rise after the engine is warmed-up, takeyour vehicle to an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice to have the thermostat checked,and replaced if necessary.

from use and not filter properly. Replace itwith a new filter using the schedule in the “WARRANTY AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL”. 1. Remove the upper cover and duct. For details, refer to “Removing and installingthe upper cover and duct” on page 9-9. 2. While holding down
the tab (A), pull out
the connector (B).
3. Unclamp the cover. Open up the top of the cover and take out the air cleaner filter. 4. Replacing the air cleaner filter and put the cover back on in its original position.
WA R N I N G Wait for the engine to cool down before opening the radiator cap. Otherwise hot steam or boiling coolant could spray up from the radiator and scald you.

2. Turn the upper cover over. Squeeze the head of the moulding clip (C) with pliers and remove the moulding. 3. Install the upper cover, and then attach the moulding (D).
4. Install the clips (E).

When freezing weather is anticipated, flush out the water in the reservoir by operating the pump. Fill the reservoir with windshield anti- freeze (not radiator antifreeze), and operatethe system for a few seconds to flush out the residual water.

Good brakes are essential for safe driving. Check the brake pads for wear. For good braking performance, replace the brake padswith the same type pads as the originals.

Brake hoses and tubing should be checkedfor:  Severe surface cracking, scuffing or worn spots. If the fabric casing of the hose is showing through any cracks or worn spotsin the rubber hose cover, the hose should be replaced. The brakes can fail if the hose wears through. Improper installation may cause twisting, or wheel, tire or chassis interference.

The best way to keep carbon monoxide gas from entering inside your vehicle is to have the engine exhaust system properly serviced. Have a competent mechanic inspect the com-plete exhaust system and nearby body areas for broken, damaged, deteriorated, or mispo- sitioned parts if you notice any of the follow-ing:  A change in the sound of the exhaust sys- tem  The smell of exhaust fumes inside the vehicle
 The underside or rear of the vehicle is damaged
Also check the exhaust system each time the vehicle is raised for lubrication, oil changes, or required service. Any open seams or looseconnections could let dangerous exhaust fumes seep into the luggage compartment and passenger compartments.  Check for holes or exhaust gas leaks caused by corrosion or damage. Check the joints and connections for looseness or exhaust gas leaks.  Check the rubber hangers and brackets for damage.

The hood lock release mechanism and hood safety catch should be checked, cleaned, and oiled when needed for easy movement and tostop rust and wear. Use Multipurpose Grease NLGI Grade 2 sparingly for all sliding parts of the hood latch and release lever. Work thegrease into the hood lock mechanism until all the movable surfaces are covered.
