Electronic key battery depletion (vehicles with a smart key system)
●The standard battery life is 1 to 2 years.
● If the battery becomes low, an alarm will sound in the cabin when the engine
stops. ( P. 497, 508)
● As the electronic key always receives radio waves, the battery will become
depleted even if the electronic key is not used. The following symptoms indi-
cate that the electronic key battery may be depleted. Replace the battery
when necessary. ( P. 463)
• The smart key system or the wireless remote control does not operate.
• The detection area becomes smaller.
• The LED indicator on the key surface does not turn on.
● To avoid serious deterioration, do not leave the electronic key within 3 ft. (1
m) of the following electrical appl iances that produce a magnetic field:
•TVs
• Personal computers
• Cellular phones, cordless phones and battery chargers
• Recharging cellular phones or cordless phones
• Table lamps
• Induction cookers
■ Replacing the battery

■Switching the door unlock functi on (vehicles with a smart key system)
It is possible to set which doors the entry function unlocks using the wireless
remote control.
Turn the engine switch off.
When the indicator light on the key surface is not on, press and hold ,
or for approximately 5 seconds while pressing and holding
.
The setting changes each time an operation is performed, as shown below.
(When changing the setting continuously, release the buttons, wait for at least
5 seconds, and repeat step .)
Vehicles with an alarm: To prevent un intended triggering of the alarm, unlock
the doors using the wireless remote control and open and close a door once
after the settings have been changed. (If a door is not opened within 60 sec-
onds after is pressed, the doors will be locked again and the alarm will
automatically be set.)
In case that the alarm is triggered, immediately stop the alarm. ( P. 6 8 )

Vehicles with a drive monitor display
A combination of exterior and interior alarms as well as warning lights are
used to prevent theft of the vehicle and unforeseeable accidents resulting
from erroneous operation. Take appropria te measures for the warning light
that comes on. ( P. 496)
Vehicles with a multi-information display
A combination of exterior and interior alarms as well as warning messages
shown on the multi-information display are used to prevent theft of the vehicle
and accidents resulting from erroneous operation. Take appropriate mea-
sures in response to any warning message on the multi-information display.

The following table describes circumstances and correction procedures when
only alarms are sounded.
When locking or unlocking the
doors

■ Battery-saving function
The battery-saving function will be activated in order to prevent the electronic
key battery and the vehicle battery from being discharged while the vehicle is
not in operation for a long time.
●In the following situations, the smart key system may take some time to
unlock the doors.
• The electronic key has been left in an area of approximately 6 ft. (2 m) of
the outside of the vehicle for 10 minutes or longer.
• The smart key system has not been used for 5 days or longer.
● If the smart key system has not been used for 14 days or longer, the doors
cannot be unlocked at any doors except the driver’s door. In this case, take
hold of the driver’s door handle, or use the wireless remote control or the
mechanical key, to unlock the doors.
■ Electronic Key Battery-Saving Function
When battery-saving mode is set, battery depletion is minimized by stopping
the electronic key from receiving radio waves.

Responding to the level of brightness of the headlights of vehicles
behind, the reflected light is automatically reduced.

function is in ON mode, the indica-
tor illuminates.
Vehicles without a smart key sys-
tem: The function will set to ON
mode each time the engine switch
is turned to the “ON” position.
Pressing the button turns the func-

Vehicles with a smart key system: The function will set to ON mode each
time the engine switch is turned to IGNITION ON mode.

To ensure that the sensors operate prop-
erly, do not touch or cover them.
CAUTION
Do not adjust the position of the mirror while driving.
Doing so may lead to mishandling of the vehicle and cause an accident,
resulting in death or serious injury.

Vehicles with a drive monitor display
Continuously variable transmission: Check that the shift lever is set
in P. Firmly depress the brake pedal.
Manual transmission: Check that the shift lever is set in N. Firmly
depress the clutch pedal.
The smart key system indicator light (green) will turn on. If the indicator
light does not turn on, the engine cannot be started.
Press the engine switch.
The engine will crank until it starts
or for up to 30 seconds, whichever
is less.
Continue depressing the brake
pedal (continuously variable trans-
mission) or clutch pedal (manual
transmission) until the engine is
completely started.
The engine can be started from
any engine switch mode.

If the engine is stopped with the shift lever in a position other than P,
the engine switch will not be turned off but instead be turned to
ACCESSORY mode. Perform the following procedure to turn the
switch off:
Check that the parking brake is set.
Shift the shift lever to P.
Vehicles with a drive monitor display
Check that the smart key system indicator light (green) flashes
slowly and then press the engine switch once.
Check that the smart key system indicator light (green) is off.
Vehicles with a mult i-information display
Check that “POWER ON” and “TURN POWER OFF” are displayed
alternately on the multi-informat ion display and then press the
engine switch once.
Check that “POWER ON” and “T URN POWER OFF” on the multi-
information display are off.
■ Auto power off function
Vehicles with a continuously variable transmission
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY mode for more than 20 minutes or IGNI-
TION ON mode (the engine is not running) for more than an hour with th\
e
shift lever in P, the engine switch will automatically turn off. However, this
function cannot entirely prevent battery discharge. Do not leave the vehicle
with the engine switch in ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode for long peri-
ods of time when the engine is not running.
Vehicles with a manual transmission
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY mode for more than 20 minutes or IGNI-
TION ON mode (the engine is not running) for more than an hour, the engine
switch will automatically turn off. However, this function cannot entirely pre-
vent battery discharge. Do not leave the vehicle with the engine switch in
ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode for long periods of time when the
engine is not running.

■ If the engine does not start
●The engine immobilizer system may not have been deactivated. ( P. 66)
Contact your Toyota dealer.
● Vehicles with a continuously variable transmission: Check that the shift lever
is securely set in P. The engine may not start if the shift lever is displaced
out of P.
Vehicles with a drive monitor display
The smart key system indicator light (green) will flash quickly.
Vehicles with a multi-information display
“SHIFT TO P POSITION TO START” will be displayed on the multi-informa-
tion display.
■ Steering lock
After turning the engine switch off and opening and closing the doors, the
steering wheel will be locked due to the steering lock function. Operating the
engine switch again automatically cancels the steering lock.
■ When the steering lock cannot be released
Vehicles with a manual transmission: Press the engine switch while turning
the steering wheel left and right.
■ Steering lock motor overheating prevention
To prevent the steering lock motor from overheating, the motor may be sus-
pended if the engine is turned on and off repeatedly in a short period of time.
In this case, refrain from operating the engine. After about 10 seconds, the
steering lock motor will resume functioning. Vehicles with a drive monitor display: The
smart key system indicator light (green)
will flash quickly.
Vehicles with a multi-information display:
“STEERING LOCK ACTIVE” will be dis-
played on the multi-information display.
Vehicles with a continuously variable
transmission: Check that the shift lever is
set in P. Press the engine switch while
turning the steering wheel left and right.
