741-4. Hybrid system
COROLLA HV_U
When a certain level of impact is
detected by the impact sensor,
the emergency shut off system
blocks the high voltage current and stops the fuel pump to mini-
mize the risk of electrocution
and fuel leakage. If the emer-
gency shut off system activates,
your vehicle will not restart. To
restart the hybrid system, con-
tact your Toyota dealer.
A message is automatically dis-
played when a malfunction
occurs in the hybrid system or
an improper operation is
attempted.
If a warning message is shown
on the multi-information display,
read the message and follow the
instructions.
■If a warning light comes on, a
warning message
is displayed,
or the 12-volt battery is discon-
nected
The hybrid system may not start. In
this case, try to start the system
again. If the “READY” indicator does
not come on, contact your Toyota
dealer.
NOTICE
■Hybrid battery (traction bat-
tery) air intake vent
●Make sure that the air intake
vent is not blocked, such as by
a seat cover, plastic cover, or
luggage. If the vent is blocked,
charging/discharging of the
hybrid battery (traction battery)
may become limited, possibly
leading to a malfunction.
●Clean the air intake vent regu-
larly to prevent the hybrid bat-
tery (traction battery) from
overheating.
●Do not allow liquid or foreign
material to enter the air intake
vent as this may cause a short
circuit and damage the hybrid
battery (traction battery).
●A filter is installed to the air
intake vent. Wh en the filter
remains noticeably dirty even
after cleaning the air intake
vent, filter cleaning or replace-
ment is recommended. Refer to
P.427 for details on how to clean
the filters.

WA R N I N G
The engine compartment contains
many mechanisms and fluids that
may move suddenly, become hot,
or become electrically energized.
To avoid death or serious injury,
observe the following precautions.
■When working on the engine
compartment
●Make sure that the “ACCES-
SORY” or “IGNITION ON” on
the multi-inform ation display
and the “READY” indicator are
both off.
●Keep hands, clothing and tools
away from the moving fans.
ItemsParts and tools●Be careful not to touch the
engine, power control unit, radi-
ator, exhaust manifold, etc. right
after driving as they may be hot.
Oil and other fluids may also be
hot.
●Do not leave anything that may
burn easily, such as paper and
rags, in the engine compart-
ment.
●Do not smoke, c ause sparks or
expose an open flame to fuel or
the 12-volt battery. Fuel and
12-volt battery fumes are flam-
mable.
●Be extremely cautious when
working on the 12-volt battery. It
contains poisonous and corro-
sive sulfuric acid.
■When working near the elec-
tric cooling fans or radiator
grille
Be sure the power switch is OFF.
With the power switch in ON, the
electric cooling fans may auto-
matically start to r un if the air con-
ditioning is on an d/or the coolant
temperature is high. ( P.409)
■Safety glasses
Wear safety glasses to prevent
flying or falling material, fluid
spray, etc. from getting in your
eyes.
NOTICE
■If you remove the air cleaner
filter
Driving with the ai r cleaner filter
removed may cause excessive
engine wear due to dirt in the air.

Maintenance and care
ment may be required. (For sched-
uled maintenance information,
please refer to the “Scheduled
Maintenance Guide” or “Owner’s
Manual Supplement”.)
■If air flow from the vents
decreases dramatically
The filter may be clogged. Check
the filter and replace if necessary.
Remove the dust from the air
intake vent with a vacuum
cleaner, etc.
Make sure to only use a vacuum to
suck out dust and clogs. Attempting
to blow out dust and clogs using an
airgun, etc. may pus h it into the air
intake vent. ( P.430)
NOTICE
■When using the air condition-
ing system
Make sure that a filter is always
installed.
Using the air conditioning system
without a filter may cause damage
to the system.
■To prevent damage to the fil-
ter cover
When moving the filter cover in
the direction of arrow to release
the fitting, pay attention not to
apply excessive force to the
claws. Otherwise, the claws may
be damaged.
Cleaning the hybrid
batter y (traction bat-
ter y) air intake vent
and filter
To prevent the fuel economy
from being affected, visually
inspect the hybrid battery
(traction battery) air intake
vent periodically for dust
and clogs. If it is dusty or
clogged or if “Maintenance
Required for Traction Bat-
tery Cooling Parts See
Owner’s Manual” is dis-
played on the multi-informa-
tion display, clean the air
intake vent using the follow-
ing procedures:

Maintenance and care
Engage the filter to the 2
claws as shown in the illus-
tration.
Engage the claw to install the
filter.
Make sure that t he filter is not
crooked or deformed when install-
ing it.
7 Install the air intake vent
cover.
Insert the tab of the cover as
shown in the illustration.
Push the cover to engage the
3 claws.
8 Using a Phillips screwdriver,
install the clip.
■Scheduled maintenance of the
air intake vent is necessary
when
In some situations such as when the
vehicle is used frequently or in
heavy traffic or dusty areas, the air intake vent may need to be cleaned
more regularly. For d
etails, refer to
“Scheduled Maintenance Guide” or
“Owner’s Manual Supplement”.
■Cleaning the air intake vent
●Dust in the air intake vent may
interfere with the cooling of the
hybrid battery (trac tion battery). If
charging/discharging of the hybrid
battery (traction battery) becomes
limited, the distance that the vehi-
cle can be driven using the electric
motor (traction motor) may be
reduced and the fuel economy
may be reduced.
Inspect and clean the air intake
vent periodically.
●Improper handling of the air intake
vent cover and filt er may result in
damage to them. If you have any
concerns about cleaning the filter,
contact your Toyota dealer.
■If “Maintenance Required for
Traction Battery Cooling Parts
See Owner’s Manual” is dis-
played on the multi-information
display
●If this warning message is dis-
played on the multi-information
display, remove the air intake vent
cover and clean the filter.
( P.428)
●After cleaning the air intake vent,
start the hybrid system and check
that the warning message is no
longer displayed.
After the hybrid system is started,
it may be necessary to drive the
vehicle up to approximately 20
minutes before the warning mes-
sage disappears. If the warning
message does not disappear after
driving for appropriately 20 min-
utes, have the vehicle inspected
by your Toyota dealer.

■Oil capacity (Drain and refill

*: The engine oil capacity is a refer-ence quantity to be used when
changing the engine oil. Warm up
the engine and turn off the hybrid
system, wait more than 5 min-
utes, and check the oil level on
the dipstick.
■Engine oil selection
“Toyota Genuine Motor Oil” is
used in your Toyota vehicle. Use
Toyota approved “Toyota Genu-
ine Motor Oil” or equivalent to
satisfy the following grade and
viscosity.
Oil grade: API SN/RC multi-
grade engine oil
Recommended viscosity: SAE
0W-16 Outside temperature
SAE 0W-16 is the best choice
for good fuel economy and good
starting in cold weather.
If SAE 0W-16 is not available,
SAE 0W-20 oil may be used.
However, it must be replaced
with SAE 0W-16 at the next oil
change.
Oil viscosity (0W-16 is explained
here as an example):
• The 0W in 0W-16 indicates the characteristic of the oil
which allows cold startability.
Oils with a lower value before
the W allow for easier starting
of the engine in cold weather.
• The 16 in 0W-16 indicates the viscosity characteristic of the
oil when the oil is at high tem-
perature. An oil with a higher
viscosity (one with a higher
value) may be better suited if
the vehicle is operated at high
speeds, or under extreme
load conditions.
