Engine immobilizer system
The vehicle's keys have built-in transponder chips that prevent the
engine from starting if the key has not been previously registered in
the vehicle's on-board computer.
Never leave the keys inside the vehicle when you leave the vehicle.

System maintenance
The vehicle has a maintenance-free type of engine immobilizer system.
■ Conditions that may cause the system to malfunction
● If the key is in contact with a metallic object
● If the key is in close proximity to or touching a key with the security sys-
tem (key with a built-in transponder chip) of another vehicle
■ Certifications for the engine immobilizer system

■ If the engine does not start
The engine immobilizer system may not have been deactivated. ( P. 115)
■ When the “ENGINE START STOP” sw itch indicator flashes in amber
The system may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle inspected by your
Toyota dealer immediately.
■ Auto power off function
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY mode for more than an hour with the
shift lever in P, the “ENGINE START STOP” switch will automatically turn off.
■ Key battery depletion

Make sure that the steering wheel lock is
released.
To release the steering wheel lock, gently
turn the wheel left or right while pressing
the “ENGINE START STOP” switch.
When the steering wheel lock is not
released, the “ENGINE START STOP”
switch indicator will flash in green.

The engine immobilizer system may not have been deactivated. ( P. 115)
■ Key reminder function
A buzzer sounds if the driver’s door is opened, while the key is in the “LOCK”
or “ACC” position to remind you to remove the key.
CAUTION
■When starting the engine
Always start the engine while sitting in the driver's seat. Do not depress the
accelerator while starting the engine under any circumstances.
Doing so may cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
■ Caution when driving
Do not turn the engine switch to the “LOCK” position while driving. If, in an
emergency, you must turn the engine off while the vehicle is moving, turn the
key only to the “ACC” position.

When starting the engine, the engine
switch may seem stuck in the “LOCK”
position. To free it, turn the key while turn-
ing the steering wheel slightly in either
direction.

*: These lights turn on when the engine switch is turned to the “ON”
position (vehicles without smart key system) or the “ENGINE START
STOP” switch is turned to IGNITI ON ON mode (vehicles with smart
key system) to indicate that a system check is being performed.
They will turn off after the engine is started, or after a few seconds.
There may be a malfunction in a system if a light does not come on,
or if the lights do not turn off. Have the vehicle inspected by your
Toyota dealer for details.
■ Warning lights
Warning lights inform the driver of malfunctions in any of the
vehicle’s systems. ( P. 510)

5-2. Steps to take in an emergency
If the engine will not star t
If the engine still does not start after following the correct starting
procedure (P. 173, 177) or releasing the steering lock ( P. 175,
178), confirm the fo llowing points.
■The engine will not start even when the starter motor oper-
ates normally.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem.
●There may not be sufficient fuel in the vehicle’s tank.
Refuel the vehicle.
● The engine may be flooded.
Try to restart the engine once more following correct starting
procedures. ( P. 173, 177)
● There may be a malfunction in the engine immobilizer system.
( P. 1 1 5 )
■ The starter motor turns over slowly, the interior lights and
headlights are dim, or the horn does not sound or sounds at
a low volume.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem.
●The battery may be discharged. ( P. 541)
● The battery terminal connec tions may be loose or corroded.
■ The starter motor does not turn over (vehicles with smart
key system).
The engine starting system may be malfunctioning due to an
electrical problem such as an open circuit or a blown fuse. How-
ever, an interim measure is available to start the engine.
