2-8. Driving Tips
2
Before Driving
Winter Driving
Carry emergency gear, including tire chains, window scraper, flares, a
small shovel, jumper cables, a nd a small bag of sand or salt.
Ask your Scion dealer to check the following:
● Have the proper ratio of antifreeze in the radiator.
Refer to Engine Coolant on P. 431.
● Inspect the battery and its cables . Cold reduces battery capacity.
● Use an engine oil appropriate for the lowest ambient temperatures
that the vehicle will be driven in ( P. 429).
● Inspect the ignition sy stem for damage and loose connections.
● Use washer fluid made with antifreeze but do not use engine cool-
ant antifreeze for washer fluid ( P. 435).
●Do not use the parking brake in freezing weather as it may freeze. Instead,
shift to 1 or R with a manual transaxle and to P with an automatic transaxle.
Block the rear wheels.
● Remove snow before driving. Snow left on the windshield is dangerous as it
could obstruct vision.
● Do not apply excessive force to a window scraper when removing ice or fro-
zen snow on the mirror glass and windshield.
● Never use warm or hot water for removing snow or ice from windows and
mirrors as it could result in the glass cracking.
● Drive slowly. Braking performance can be adversely affected if snow or ice
adheres to the brake components. If this situation occurs, drive the vehicle
slowly, releasing the accelerator pedal and lightly applying the brakes sev-
eral times until the brake performance returns to normal.

When Driving
These lights turn on or flash to notify the user of the system operation
status or a system malfunction.
*1: The light turns on when the ignition is switched on for an operation chec\
k, and turns off a few seconds later or when the engine is started. If the light
does not turn on or remains turned on, have the vehicle inspected at your
Scion dealer.
*2: The light turns on continuously when the parking brake is applied.

3-4. Switches and Controls
Windshield Wipers and Washer
The ignition must be switched ON to use the wipers.
Because heavy ice and snow can jam the wiper blades, the wiper motor is
protected from motor breakdown, overheating and possible fire by a circuit
breaker. This mechanism will automatically stop operation of the blades, but
only for about 5 minutes.
If this happens, turn off the wiper switch and park off the right-of-way, and
remove the snow and ice.
After 5 minutes, turn on the switch and the blades should operate normally. If
they do not resume functioning, consult your Scion dealer as soon as possi-
ble. Drive to the side of the road and park off the right-of-way. Wait until the
weather clears before trying to drive with the wipers inoperative.
WARNING
■Use only windshield washer fluid or plain water in the reservoir
Using radiator antifreeze as washer fluid is dangerous. If sprayed on the
windshield, it will dirty the windshield, affect your visibility, and could result
in an accident.
■ Only use windshield washer fluid mixed with anti-freeze protection in
freezing weather conditions
Using windshield washer fluid without anti-freeze protection in freezing
weather conditions is dangerous as it could freeze on the windshield and
block your vision which could cause an accident. In addition, make sure the
windshield is sufficiently warmed using the defroster before spraying the
washer fluid.

OFF
Washer
Pull the lever toward you and hold
it to spray washer fluid.
If the washer does not work, inspect the fluid level (P. 435). If the
fluid level is normal, c onsult your Scion dealer.
With the wiper lever in the or position, the wipers will operate contin-
uously until the lever is released.

5-3. Owner Maintenance
Owner Maintenance Precautions
The owner or a qualified service technician should make these vehicle
inspections at the indicated intervals to ensure safe and dependable
operation.
Bring any problem to the attention of your Scion dealer or qualified
service technician as soon as possible.
■When Refueling
● Brake and clutch fluid level ( P. 434)
● Engine coolant level ( P. 431)
● Engine oil level ( P. 430)
● Washer fluid level ( P. 435)
■At Least Monthly
Tire inflation pressures ( P. 446)
■At Least Twice a Year (For Example, Every Spring and Fall)
You can do the following scheduled maintenance items if you have
some mechanical ability and a few basic tools and if you closely fol-
low the directions in this manual.
● Engine coolant ( P. 431)
● Engine oil ( P. 429)
Improper or incomplete service ma y result in problems. This sec-
tion gives instructions only for items that are easy to perform.
As explained in the Introduction ( P. 418), several procedures can
be done only by a qualified service technician with special tools.
Improper owner maintenance during the warranty period may affect
warranty coverage. Refer to Introduction ( P. 418) for owner’s
responsibility in protecting your investment. For details, read the
separate Scion Warranty and Maintenance Guide provided with the
vehicle. If you are unsure about an y servicing or maintenance pro-
cedure, have it done by your Scion dealer.
There are strict environmental laws regarding the disposal of waste
oil and fluids. Please dispose of your waste properly and with due
regard to the environment.
We recommend that you entrust the oil and fluid changes of your
vehicle to your Scion dealer.

Maintenance and Care
Window Washer Fluid
Inspect fluid level in the washer
fluid reservoir; add fluid if neces-
sary.
Use plain water if washer fluid is unavailable.
But use only washer fluid in cold weather to prevent it from freezing.
●State or local regulations may restrict the use of volatile organic compounds
(VOCs), which are commonly used as anti-freeze agents in washer fluid. A
washer fluid with limited VOC content should be used only if it provides ade-
quate freeze resistance for all regions and climates in which the vehicle will
be operated.

WARNING
■Use only windshield washer fluid or plain water in the reservoir
Using radiator antifreeze as washer fluid is dangerous. If sprayed on the
windshield, it will dirty the windshield, affect your visibility, and could result
in an accident.
■ Using Washer Fluid Without Anti-f reeze Protection in Cold Weather
Operating your vehicle in temperatures below 4 degrees C (40 degrees F)
using washer fluid without anti-freeze protection is dangerous as it could
cause impaired windshield vision and result in an accident. In cold weather,
always use washer fluid with anti- freeze protection.

Maintenance and Care
●When cleaning the plastic lenses of the lights, do not use gasoline,
kerosene, rectified spirit, paint, thinner, highly acidic detergents, or
strongly alkaline detergents. Otherwise, these chemical agents can
discolor or damage the surfaces resulting in a significant loss in
functionality. If plastic parts beco me inadvertently exposed to any of
these chemical agents, flus h with water immediately.
● If plastic parts such as the bum pers become inadvertently exposed
to chemical agents or fluids such as gasoline, oil, engine coolant, or
battery fluid, it could cause discoloration, stai ning, or paint peeling.
Wipe off any such chemical agents or fluids using a soft cloth imme-
diately.
● High water temperature and high water pressure car washers are
available depending on the type of high pressure car washer
device. If the car washer nozzle is put too close to the vehicle or
aimed at one area for an extended period of time, it could deform
plastic parts or damage the paint.
● Do not use wax containing compounds (polish). Otherwise, it could
result in paint damage.
● In addition, do not use an electrical or air tool to apply wax. Other-
wise, the frictional heat generat ed could result in deformation of
plastic parts or paint damage.
NOTICE
Do not use any detergent other than mild detergent. Before using any deter-
gent, verify the ingredients.
Otherwise, the product could discolor or stain the aluminum wheels.
