Maintenance and care
■Coolant selection
Only use “Toyota Super Long Life Coolant” or a similar high quality ethylene
glycol based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite, and non-bora te coolant with
long-life hybrid organic acid technology.
U.S.A.:
“Toyota Super Long Life Coolant” is a mixture of 50% coolant and 50% deion-
ized water. (Minimum temperature: -31 F [-35 C])
Canada:
“Toyota Super Long Life Coolant” is a mixture of 55% coolant and 45% deion-
ized water. (Minimum temperature: -44 F [-42 C])
For more details about coolant, contact your Toyota dealer.
■ If the coolant level drops within a short time of replenishing
Visually check the radiator, hoses, engine/power control unit c oolant reservoir
caps, drain cock and water pump.
If you cannot find a leak, have your Toyota dealer test the cap and check for
leaks in the cooling system.
WARNING
■ When the hybrid system is hot
Do not remove the engine/power control unit coolant reservoir c aps.
The cooling system may be under pressure and may spray hot coolant if the
cap is removed, causing serious injuries, such as burns.
NOTICE
■ When adding coolant
Coolant is neither plain water nor straight antifreeze. The cor rect mixture of
water and antifreeze must be used to provide proper lubrication , corrosion
protection and cooling. Be sure to read the antifreeze or coolant label.
■ If you spill coolant
Be sure to wash it off with water to prevent it from damaging p arts or paint.

Check the radiator and condenser and clear away any foreign objects.
If either of the above parts is extremely dirty or you are not sure of
their condition, have your vehic le inspected by your Toyota dea ler.
Check the 12-volt battery as follows:
■12-volt battery exterior
Make sure that the 12-volt battery terminals are not corroded a nd
that there are no loose connecti ons, cracks, or loose clamps.

WARNING
■ When the hybrid system is hot
Do not touch the radiator or condenser as they may be hot and c ause seri-
ous injuries, such as burns.
■ When the electric cooling fans are operating
Do not touch the engine compartment.
With the power switch in ON mode, the electric cooling fans may automati-
cally start to run if the air conditioning is on and/or the coolant temperature
is high. Be sure the power switch is off when working near the electric cool-
ing fans or radiator grille.

■Using the gauge (if equipped)
The washer fluid level can be checked by
observing the position of the level on the
liquid-covered holes in the gauge.
If the level falls below the second hole
from the bottom (the “LOW” position), refill
the washer fluid.
WARNING
■When adding washer fluid
Do not add washer fluid when the hybrid system is hot or operat ing as
washer fluid contains alcohol and may catch fire if spilled on the engine etc.
NOTICE
■Do not use any fluid ot her than washer fluid
Do not use soapy water or engine antifreeze instead of washer f luid.
Doing so may cause streaking on the vehicle’s painted surfaces, as well as
damaging the pump leading to problems of the washer fluid not s praying.
■ Diluting washer fluid
Dilute washer fluid with water as necessary.
Refer to the freezing temperatures listed on the label of the washer fluid bot-
tle.

Checking and replacing fuses
Turn the power switch off.
Open the fuse box cover.
Engine compartment type A fuse box
While pushing the 2 claws, lift up
the cover.
When closing the cover, make sure
to attach the 2 claws.
Engine compartment type B fuse box
While pushing the 3 claws, lift up
the cover.
When closing the cover, make sure
to attach the 3 claws.
Left side instrument panel
Remove the lid.
Make sure to press the claw during
removal or installation.
If any of the electrical components do not operate, a fuse may
have blown. If this happens, che ck and replace the fuses as nec-
essary.

Slip indicator lightIndicates a malfunction in:
• The VSC system;
• The TRAC system; or
• The hill-start assist control system
 Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer
immediately.
The light will flash when the ABS, VSC or TRAC system is
operating.
High coolant temperature warning light • When the light flashes:
Indicates that the engine coolant temperature is too high
The light changes from a flashing to a solid light when
the temperature further increases
 Immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place. ( P. 656)
• When the light comes on without flashing: Indicates a malfunction in the exhaust heat recirculator
system
 Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer
immediately.

PKSB OFF indicator
Indicates a malfunction in the Parking Support Brake func-
tion
 Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer.
The warning light will operate as follows, even when the
system is not malfunctioning:
• The light will come on when the Parking Support Brake function is turned off ( P. 375)
• The light will come on when the Parking Support Brake function is operating ( P. 379)
• The light will flash when the system cannot be temporar- ily used ( P. 383)
Open door warning light (warning buzzer)*3
Indicates that a door is not fully closed
 Check that all the doors are closed.
Low fuel level warning light
Indicates that remaining fuel is approximately 1.7 gal.
(6.4 L, 1.4 Imp.gal.) or less
 Refuel the vehicle.

this may be a malfunction. Immediately stop the vehicle in a sa fe place and
contact your Toyota dealer. Continuing to drive the vehicle may be danger-
ous.
● If “Engine Oil Pressure Low” is shown, this may be a malfunction. Immedi-
ately stop the vehicle in a safe place and contact your Toyota dealer.
● If the following messages are shown, there may be a malfunction . Immedi-
ately have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer.
• “Hybrid System Malfunction”
• “Check Engine”

■ If “Shift System Malfunction A pply Parking Brake Securely While Park-
ing See Owner’s Manual” is shown
Indicates a malfunction in the shift control system. Immediatel y have the vehi-
cle inspected by your Toyota dealer.
When the message is shown, the hybrid system may not be started or the
shift position may not be changed normally. (Coping method: P. 609)
■ If “ Switch Malfunction Apply Par king Brake Securely While Parking
See Owner’s Manual” is shown
The P position switch may not operate. Immediately have the veh icle
inspected by your Toyota dealer.
When parking the vehicle, stop the vehicle on level ground and apply the
parking brake firmly.
■ If “Shift System Malfunction Shi fting Unavailable See Owner’s M anual”
is shown
Indicates a malfunction in the shift control system. Immediatel y have the vehi-
cle inspected by your Toyota dealer.
The shift position may not be shifted from P to other than P.
■ If “Shift System Malfunction S top in a Safe Place See Owner’s Manual”
is shown
Indicates a malfunction in the shift control system. Immediatel y have the vehi-
cle inspected by your Toyota dealer.
The shift position may not be changed. Stop the vehicle in a sa fe place.

If “Shift to Before Exiting Vehicle” is shown
Message is displayed when the driver’s door is opened without t urning the
power switch to off with the shift position in any position oth er than P.
Shift the shift position to P.
■ If “Shift is in Release Accelerat or Before Shifting” is shown
Message is displayed when the accelerator pedal has been depressed and
the shift position is in N.
Release the accelerator pedal and shift the shift position to D or R.
■ If “Depress Brake When Vehicle is Stopped. Hybrid System may Ov er-
heat.” is shown
The message may be shown when the accelerator pedal is depresse d to hold
the vehicle while the vehicle is stopped on an uphill, etc.
The hybrid system may overheat. Release the accelerator pedal a nd depress
the brake pedal.
■ If “Shifted to Stop Vehicle to Shift to ” is shown
If the P position switch is pressed while driving, the shift po sition is changed
to N and the message is shown. ( P. 257)
■ If “Auto Power OFF to Conserve Battery” is shown
The power switch has been turned off by the automatic power off function.
When starting the hybrid system next time, operate the hybrid s ystem for
approximately 5 minutes to recharge the 12-volt battery.
■ If “Engine Oil Level Low Add or Replace” is displayed
The engine oil level may be low. Check the level of the engine oil, and add
engine oil if necessary. This message may be displayed if the vehicle is
stopped on a slope. Move the vehicle to a level surface and che ck if the mes-
sage disappears.
■ If “Accelerator and Brake Pedals Pressed Simultaneously” is sho wn
The accelerator and brake pedals are being depressed simultaneo usly.

Release the accelerator pedal and depress the brake pedal.
■ If a message that indicates the malfunction of front camera is dis-
played.

Once the hybrid system has started, remove the jumper cables in
the exact reverse order from which they were connected.
To install the engine cover, conduct the removal procedure in
reverse. After installing, check that the fixed pins are inserted
securely.
Once the hybrid system starts, have the vehicle inspected at yo ur
Toyota dealer as soon as possible.
■ When opening the cover of the positive (+) battery terminal

■ Starting the hybrid system when the 12-volt battery is discharged
The hybrid system cannot be started by push-starting.
■ To prevent 12-volt battery discharge
●Turn off the headlights and the audio system while the hybrid s ystem is off.
● Turn off any unnecessary electrical components when the vehicle is running
at a low speed for an extended period, such as in heavy traffic .
■ When the 12-volt battery is removed or discharged
● Information stored in the ECU is cleared. When the 12-volt batt ery is
depleted, have the vehicle inspected at your Toyota dealer.
● Some systems may require initialization. ( P. 701)
■ When removing the 12-vo lt battery terminals
When the 12-volt battery terminals are removed, the information stored in the
ECU is cleared. Before removing the 12-volt battery terminals, contact your
Toyota dealer.
■ Charging the 12-volt battery
The electricity stored in the 12-volt battery will discharge gr adually even when
the vehicle is not in use, due to natural discharge and the dra ining effects of
certain electrical appliances. If the vehicle is left for a lon g time, the 12-volt
battery may discharge, and the hybrid system may be unable to s tart. (The
12-volt battery recharges automatically while the hybrid system is operating.)

When trouble arises
After stopping the hybrid system and waiting for 5 minutes or
more, start the hybrid system again and check if “Hybrid System
Overheated” is shown on the multi-information display.
If the message d oes not disappear:
Stop the hybrid system and contact your Toyota dealer.
If the message is not displayed:
The hybrid system temperature has dropped and the vehicle may
be driven normally.
However, if the message appears again frequently, contact your To y o t a
dealer.
WARNING
■ To prevent an accident or injury when inspecting under the hood of
your vehicle
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in serious injury such as burns.
● If steam is seen coming from under the hood, do not open the ho od until
the steam has subsided. The engine compartment may be very hot.
● After the hybrid system has been turned off, check that the “Accessory”,
“Ignition ON” or mileage display ( P. 116) on the main display and the
“READY” indicator are off.
When the hybrid system is operating, the gasoline engine may au tomati-
cally start, or the cooling fans may suddenly operate even if the gasoline
engine stops. Do not touch or approach rotating parts such as t he fan,
which may lead to fingers or clothing (especially a tie, a scarf or a muffler)
getting caught, resulting in serious injury.
● Do not loosen the coolant reservoir caps while the hybrid syste m and radi-
ator are hot.
High temperature steam or coolant could spray out.

■Oil capacity (Drain and refill [Reference*])
*: The engine oil capacity is a reference quantity to be used when changing
the engine oil. Park the vehicle on level ground. After warming up the
engine and turning off the hybrid system, wait more than 5 minu tes, and
check the oil level on the dipstick.
■
Engine oil selection
“Toyota Genuine Motor Oil” is used in your Toyota vehicle. Use
Toyota approved “Toyota Genuine Motor Oil” or equivalent to sat isfy
the following grade and viscosity.
Oil grade: API SN/RC multigrade engine oil
Recommended viscosity: SAE 0W-16
SAE 0W-16 is the best choice
for good fuel economy and
good starting in cold weather.
If SAE 0W-16 is not available,
SAE 0W-20 oil may be used.
However, it must be replaced
with SAE 0W-16 at the next oil
change.
Oil viscosity (0W-16 is expl ained here as an example):
• The 0W in 0W-16 indicates the characteristic of the oil which allows cold startability. Oils wi th a lower value before the W allow
for easier starting of the engine in cold weather.
• The 16 in 0W-16 indicates the vi scosity characteristic of the oil
when the oil is at high temperature. An oil with a higher visco sity
(one with a higher value) may be better suited if the vehicle i s
operated at high speeds, or un der extreme load conditions.
