3. Remove 6 bolts (3 at each side) holding lower control arms to body. Support transaxle with a jack.
Remove 2 exhaust pipe support bracket set bolts in middle of suspension crossmember. Remove 2
grommets and center member set bolt and 2 nuts. Remove 2 power steering gear assembly mounting bolts
and nuts. Support suspension crossmember with a jack. Remove 2 upper inner bolts and lower suspension
crossmember from vehicle with lower control arms attached. See Fig. 4
.
4. Remove lower control arm collar. Remove control arm-to-suspension crossmember bolt and remove
lower control arm. See Fig. 4
.
5. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all bolts and nut to specification. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS .
Removal & Installation (2000 Celica)
1. Remove front wheel. Remove right side engine cover. Remove bolt and 2 nuts, and disconnect lower
suspension arm from lower ball joint. Remove 2 bolts, nut and lower suspension arm.
2. On models with A/T, remove left side engine covers. On all models, remove cotter pin and nut, and
disconnect tie rod ends from steering knuckle. Remove nut, and disconnect stabilizer bar link from shock
absorber. Remove bolt and 2 nuts, and disconnect lower suspension arm from lower ball joint. Loosen
lower suspension arm set bolts.
3. Remove hood. Disconnect 2 PVC hoses. Install No. 1 and No. 2 engine hangers in correct direction.
Attach engine chain hoist to engine hangers.
4. Remove 4 set bolts to disconnect power steering gear assembly from suspension member. Secure power
steering gear aside. Remove bolt "A" and 3 nuts. Disconnect engine rear mount. Remove 2 "B" bolts, and
disconnect engine front mount. See Fig. 8
.
5. Using a transmission jack, support suspension member. Remove 6 bolts ("C", "D", and "E"). Lower
suspension member. Remove 2 bolts, nut and lower suspension arm.
6. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all bolts and nut to specification. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS . CAUTION: DO NOT hook engine chain to any other part of vehicle.

Removal & Installation (Corolla)
1. Remove front wheel. Remove stabilizer bar. See STABILIZER BAR . Remove 2 nuts and bolt and
disconnect lower control arm from lower ball joint. See Fig. 9
.
2. On A/T models, remove 3 bolts, lower control arm bracket and lower control arm from right side. On left
side, support suspension crossmember. Remove 7 bolts and 4 nuts, and then remove lower control arm
bracket and suspension crossmember with lower control arm attached. See Fig. 10
. Remove lower
control arm-to-crossmember bolt on left side.
3. On M/T, remove 6 bolts (3 each side) from lower control arm bracket and lower control arms. See Fig. 9
.

Removal & Installation (Echo)
1. Remove front wheel. Holding stabilizer bar link, remove 2 nuts, 5 retainers, 4 cushions and stabilizer bar
link. Remove clip and nut. Using ball joint puller, disconnect lower suspension arm from steering
knuckle.
2. On right side arm, remove bolt and 2 nuts, and disconnect engine rear mount. Using transmission jack and
wooden block, slightly raise engine. Remove 2 bolts, nut and lower suspension arm.
3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all bolts and nut to specification. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS .

BALL JOINTS
Removal & Installation
1. Remove steering knuckle with axle hub. See FRONT AXLE HUB & WHEEL BEARING . Using
screwdriver, pry off dust cover. Remove cotter pin and nut. On all models except Echo, use ball joint
removal tool to remove lower ball joint from axle hub assembly. On Echo, lower control arm must be
removed and replaced to remove ball joint.
2. To install, reverse removal procedure. Check ball joint turning torque. See BALL JOINT CHECKING
under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION. Install NEW cotter pin and NEW dust cover.
STABILIZER BAR
Removal & Installation
1. Remove both front wheels. Remove 4 nuts and remove both stabilizer bar links (2 nuts at each end). On
Echo, remove 2 nuts, 5 retainers, 4 cushions and stabilizer bar link. On Echo and Sienna, disconnect both
tie rod ends from steering knuckles. On all models, remove left and right stabilizer bar brackets and
bushings.
2. On Corolla, remove suspension brace. See Fig. 10
. On Sienna, remove power steering gear mounting
bolts and nuts. See Fig. 13
. On 2000 Celica, remove front suspension member with lower suspension
arm. Remove 2 bolts, bracket and bushing. Install bushing, with cut out facing toward rear, on outside of
paint line on stabilizer bar.
3. On Echo, remove clip and nut, and disconnect steering knuckle. Remove hood, and attach engine sling to
engine hangers. Remove bolt and 2 nuts, and disconnect rear engine mount. Disconnect sliding yoke and
pressure feed and return tubes. Remove bolt, and disconnect tube clamp. Support suspension member
with transmission jack. Remove 4 bolts and lower suspension member. Remove 4 bolts, 2 brackets and
bushings. On all models, remove stabilizer bar. On Avalon, Camry, Camry Solara, Celica and Sienna,
remove stabilizer bar from left side of vehicle. See Fig. 4
.
4. To install, reverse removal procedure. On Sienna, install stabilizer bar with White colored side on right
side and stabilizer bar link with Green colored side on left side. Tighten all bolts and nuts to specification.

Removal & Installation (Tacoma)
1. Disable air bag system, remove driver's air bag and steering wheel. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT
SYSTEMS article. Remove lower finish panel. Remove steering column covers.
2. Remove starter switch bezel (if necessary). Remove cluster finish panel retaining screws. Using flat-
blade
screwdriver, pry instrument cluster finish panel loose from 3 retaining clips.
3. Remove 4 instrument cluster retaining screws. Pull instrument cluster out far enough to disconnect wiring
harness connectors. Remove instrument cluster. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (Tundra)
Disable air bag system, remove driver's air bag and steering wheel. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS
article. Remove steering column covers and combination switch. Remove combination meter finish panel.
Remove combination meter. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (4Runner)
1. Disable air bag system, remove driver's air bag and steering wheel. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT
SYSTEMS article. Remove steering column covers. Remove 4 lower finish panel retaining bolts. Remove
hood release and fuel tank lid release lever.
2. Using a screwdriver, carefully remove instrument panel lower finish panel. Remove ignition switch bezel.
Disconnect air registers. Remove 4 retaining screws from instrument cluster finish panel. Carefully
remove cluster finish panel. Disconnect wiring harness connectors.
3. Remove instrument cluster retaining screws. Pull cluster outward enough to disconnect wiring harness
connectors. Remove instrument cluster. To install, reverse removal procedure.

1. Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect and plug return hose. Use drain pan to catch power steering
fluid when connections are released.
2. Disconnect oil pressure switch connector. Remove oil pressure switch from pressure feed line. Remove
union bolt and gaskets. Disconnect pressure feed line from pump.
3. Loosen power steering pump adjusting bolts. Remove drive belt. Remove power steering pump mounting
bolts. Remove power steering pump.
Removal (Tundra)
1. Disconnect MAF connector. Remove hose from air cleaner. Remove clamp, bolts and remove air cleaner
assembly. On V8 engines, loosen drive belt tensioner and remove drive belt. On all models, disconnect
and plug return hose. Use drain pan to catch power steering fluid when connections are released.
2. On V6 models, disconnect oil pressure switch connector and remove oil pressure switch. On V8, remove
vacuum hoses. On all models, disconnect pressure feed line from pump. On V6 models, remove drive
belt. On all models, loosen power steering pump adjusting bolts. Remove power steering pump mounting
bolts. Remove power steering pump.
Installation (All Models)
To install, reverse removal procedure. Fill and bleed system. See HYDRAULIC SYSTEM BLEEDINGunder
LUBRICATION.
POWER RACK & PINION
Removal (Land Cruiser)
1. Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Remove steering wheel and pad. Remove right and left
engine under covers. Disconnect both tie rod ends. See FRONT
- LAND CRUISER article in
SUSPENSION.
2. Drain engine oil. Remove oil filter assembly. Disconnect lower steering column shaft from steering gear.
Disconnect pressure and return lines from steering gear. Remove line clamps. Place matchmarks on tie
rod end and rack end. Remove both tie rods.
3. Remove power rack and pinion assembly mounting bolts and nuts. Remove rack and pinion assembly.
Installation
1. To install, reverse removal procedure, except install power feed and return line clamps to rack and pinion
assembly first.
2. After installation, place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Center steering wheel spiral cable, then
install steering wheel and pad. Check front wheel alignment.
Removal (RAV4)
1. Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Remove steering wheel and pad.
2. Remove right and left engine under covers. Disconnect both tie rod ends. See FRONT
- AVALON,

5. Remove power rack and pinion assembly mounting bolts and nuts. Securely suspend rack and pinion
assembly.
6. Remove front suspension crossmember. See Fig. 1
. Remove power rack and pinion assembly.
Installation
1. To install, reverse removal procedure, except install power feed and return line clamps to rack and pinion
assembly first.
2. After installation, place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Center steering wheel spiral cable, then
install steering wheel and pad. Check front wheel alignment.
Removal (Sienna)
1. Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Remove steering wheel and pad. Disconnect both tie rod
ends. See FRONT
- AVALON, CAMRY, CAMRY SOLARA, CELICA, COROLLA, ECHO, RAV4
& SIENNA article in SUSPENSION.
2. Disconnect lower steering column shaft from steering gear. Remove nut holding tube clamp on rack
housing. Disconnect pressure and return lines from steering gear.
3. Disconnect, but DO NOT remove, stabilizer bar. See FRONT
- AVALON, CAMRY, CAMRY
SOLARA, CELICA, COROLLA, ECHO, RAV4 & SIENNA article in SUSPENSION.
4. Remove power rack and pinion assembly mounting bolts and nuts. Lift stabilizer bar to remove bolts.
Remove power rack and pinion assembly.
Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure, installing assembly from left side of vehicle. After installation, place
front wheels in straight-ahead position. Center steering wheel spiral cable, then install steering wheel and pad.
Check front wheel alignment.
Removal (Tacoma)
1. Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Remove steering wheel and pad. On 4WD models, remove
engine under cover. Disconnect both tie rod ends.
2. Disconnect lower steering column shaft from steering gear. Disconnect pressure and return lines from
steering gear.
3. Remove power rack and pinion assembly mounting bolts and nuts. Remove power rack and pinion
assembly.
Installation

clamp plate.
2. Disconnect pressure and return lines from steering gear. Remove power rack and pinion assembly
mounting bolts and nuts. Remove power rack and pinion assembly.
Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure. After installation, place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Center
steering wheel spiral cable, then install steering wheel and pad. Check front wheel alignment.
Removal (4Runner)
1. Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Remove steering wheel and pad. Remove engine under
cover.
2. Remove stabilizer bar. Disconnect both tie rod ends. Disconnect lower steering column shaft from
steering gear. Disconnect pressure and return lines from steering gear.
3. Remove power rack and pinion assembly mounting bolts and nuts. Remove power rack and pinion
assembly.
Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure. After installation, place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Center
steering wheel spiral cable, then install steering wheel and pad. Check front wheel alignment.
OVERHAUL
POWER STEERING PUMP
Disassembly (RAV4)
1. Mount pump assembly in soft-jaw vise. Ensure pump rotates smoothly. Using a torque wrench, check
pump rotating torque. Rotating torque should be 2.4 INCH lbs. (.3 N.m) or less. Remove front bracket
and pump bracket.
2. While holding pulley, remove pulley nut. Remove pulley and Woodruff key from pump shaft. Remove air
control valve. See Fig. 3
. Remove pressure feed No. 2 tube.
3. Remove union bolt and "O" ring from suction (return) port. Remove "O" ring from pressure port. Remove
flow control valve and spring. See Fig. 3
.
4. Remove flow control valve seat snap ring. Install a 6 x 1 x 50 mm bolt about 2-3 threads into seat. Pull
sprin
g seat from housing. Remove "O" ring.

WHEEL BEARING INSPECTION
Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel and brake drum, or rotor (if equipped). Position dial indicator with
stem against center of axle hub. Move axle hub in and out while observing dial indicator. Replace hub if axial
play exceeds .002" (.05 mm). Measure hub axial runout. Replace hub if runout exceeds .0028" (.07 mm).
WHEEL BEARING ADJUSTMENT
Hubs must be replaced if axle end play or runout are not within specification. No adjustment is available. See
WHEEL BEARINGS (HUBS)
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
AXLE BEAM
Removal (ECHO)
1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheels and brake drums. Disconnect brakelines from flex hoses,
remove retaining clips from shock absorbers and plug openings. Disconnect ABS sensor and remove
harness clamp from axle beam. Disconnect parking brake cable from backing plate and remove cable
clamp from axle beam. Remove axle hub assemblies. Remove backing plate assemblies, with brake shoes
still attached.
2. Remove high-mounted stop light from rear package tray. Remove 2 clips and remove package tray.
Remove rear seat. Remove door scuff plate and door opening trim. See Fig. 5
. Remove rear seat outer
seat belts and remove quarter trim panels. On 2 door models, remove outer anchor for front seat shoulder
belt and remove roof side inner garnish. On all models, remove room partition board.
3. Using 2 floor jacks, support rear axle beam under each coil spring. While holding shock absorber shaft,
remove the 2 upper nuts, disconnecting lower suspension supports from body. Lower jacks slowly.
Remove coil springs and insulators. Remove axle beam-to-
body bolts. Remove axle beam. NOTE: See SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES
in WHEEL ALIGNMENT article.

Installation (ECHO)
1. Install coil spring insulators and coil springs to rear axle beam. Install shock absorbers and lower
suspension supports to axle beam, if removed. Raise axle beam with floor jacks and install axle beam-to-
body bolts. Install lower suspension supports and shock absorbers to body. Leaving axle beam-to-body
bolts, lower suspension supports and shock absorber bolts loose, lower vehicle.
2. Bounce vehicle several times to settle suspension. Tighten all nuts and bolts to specification. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Fill and bleed
brake system.
AXLE HUB & CARRIER
Removal (Avalon, Camry, Camry Solara, Celica & Corolla)
1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheels. On models with ABS, disconnect rear speed sensor. On
drum brake models, disconnect brakeline from flex hose, and plu
g openings. Remove brake drum.
