If the hybrid system will not start (hybrid vehicle)
Reasons for the hybrid system not starting vary depending on the
situation. Check the following and perform the appropriate proce-
dure:
The hybrid system will not start even though the correct
starting procedure is being followed. (P. 236, 241)
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
Vehicles with an electronic key: The electronic key may not be
functioning properly. (P. 627)
There may not be sufficient fuel in the vehicle’s tank.
Refuel the vehicle. (P. 151)
There may be a malfunction in the immobilizer system.
(P. 155)
There may be a malfunction in the steering lock system.
The hybrid system may be malfunctioning due to an electrical
problem such as an open circuit or a blown fuse. However,
depending on the type of malfunction, an interim measure is
available to start the hybrid system. (P. 620)
The interior lights and headlights are dim, or the horn does
not sound or sounds at a low volume.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
The 12-volt battery may be discharged. (P. 636)
The 12-volt battery terminal connections may be loose or cor-
roded.

Emergency start function (vehicles with an electronic key)
When the hybrid system does not start, the following steps can be
used as an interim measure to start the hybrid system if the
“POWER” switch is functioning normally:
Shift the shift lever to P.
Set the parking brake.
Turn the “POWER” switch to ACCESSORY mode.
Press and hold the “POWER” switch for about 15 seconds
while depressing the brake pedal firmly.
Even if the hybrid system can be started using the above steps, the
system may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle inspected by any
authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional.
The Interior lights and headlights do not turn on, or the horn
does not sound.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
One or both of the 12-volt battery terminals may be discon-
nected.
The 12-volt battery may be discharged. (P. 636)
Contact any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly
qualified and equipped professional if the problem cannot be repaired,
or if repair procedures are unknown.

If the shift lever cannot be shifted from P (vehicles with a hybrid transmission or a Multidrive)
If the shift lever cannot be shifted with your foot on the brake pedal,
there may be a problem with the shift lock system (a system to pre-
vent accidental operation of the shift lever). Have the vehicle
inspected by any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional immediately.
The following steps may be used as an emergency measure to
ensure that the shift lever can be shifted:
Set the parking brake.
Except hybrid vehicle
Vehicles without a smart entry & start system:
Turn the engine switch to the “ACC” position.
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system:
Turn the “ENGINE START STOP” switch to ACCESSORY
mode.
Hybrid vehicle
Vehicles without an electronic key:
Turn the engine switch to the “ACC” position.
Vehicles with an electronic key:
Turn the “POWER” switch to ACCESSORY mode.
Depress the brake pedal.
Press the shift lock override
button.
The shift lever can be shifted
while the button is pressed.

If you lose your keys
New genuine Toyota keys can be made by any authorized Toyota
dealer or repairer, and another duly qualified and equipped profes-
sional using the other key and the key number stamped on your key
number plate.

If the electronic key does not operate properly
Unlocking and locking the doors
Use the mechanical key (P. 66)
in order to perform the following
operations:
Unlocks all the doors
Locks all the doors
: If equipped
If communication between the electronic key and vehicle is inter-
rupted (P. 78) or the electronic key cannot be used because the
battery is depleted, the smart entry & start system and wireless
remote control cannot be used. In such cases, the doors can be
opened and the engine (except hybrid vehicle) or hybrid system
(hybrid vehicle) can be started by following the procedure below.

Vehicles with a Multidrive
Ensure that the shift lever is in P and firmly depress the brake
pedal.
Touch the Toyota emblem side of
the electronic key to the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch.
The “ENGINE START STOP”
switch will turn to IGNITION ON
mode.
When the smart entry & start system is deactivated in customization
setting, the “ENGINE START STOP” switch will turn to ACCESSORY
mode.
Firmly depress the brake pedal and check that the smart entry
& start system indicator light (green) turns on.
Press the “ENGINE START STOP” switch.
In the event that the “ENGINE START STOP” switch still can-
not be operated, contact any authorized Toyota dealer or
repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional.
Vehicles with a multi-mode manual transmission
Ensure that the shift lever is in N and firmly depress the brake
pedal.
Touch the Toyota emblem side of
the electronic key to the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch.
The “ENGINE START STOP”
switch will turn to IGNITION ON
mode.

setting, the “ENGINE START STOP” switch will turn to ACCESSORY
mode.
Firmly depress the brake pedal and check that the smart entry
& start system indicator light (green) turns on.
Press the “ENGINE START STOP” switch.
In the event that the “ENGINE START STOP” switch still can-
not be operated, contact any authorized Toyota dealer or
repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional.
Vehicles with a manual transmission
Ensure that the shift lever is in N and depress the clutch
pedal.
Touch the Toyota emblem side of
the electronic key to the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch.
The “ENGINE START STOP”
switch will turn to IGNITION ON
mode.
When the smart entry & start system is deactivated in customization
setting, the “ENGINE START STOP” switch will turn to ACCESSORY
mode.
Firmly depress the clutch pedal and check that the smart
entry & start system indicator light (green) turns on.
Press the “ENGINE START STOP” switch.
In the event that the “ENGINE START STOP” switch still can-
not be operated, contact any authorized Toyota dealer or
repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional.

Starting the hybrid system (hybrid vehicle)
Ensure that the shift lever is in P and firmly depress the brake
pedal.
Touch the Toyota emblem side of
the electronic key to the
“POWER” switch.
The “POWER” switch will turn to
ON mode.
If any of the doors is opened or
closed while the key is being
touched to the switch, an alarm
will sound to indicate that the start
function cannot detect the elec-
tronic key.
When the smart entry & start system is deactivated in customization
setting, the “POWER” switch will turn to ACCESSORY mode.
Firmly depress the brake pedal and check that the smart entry
& start system indicator light (green) turns on.
Press the “POWER” switch.
In the event that the hybrid system still cannot be operated,
contact any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional.
Stopping the engine (except hybrid vehicle)
Vehicles with a Multidrive: Shift the shift lever to P and press the “ENGINE
START STOP” switch as you normally do when stopping the engine.
Except vehicles with a Multidrive: Shift the shift lever to N and press the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch as you normally do when stopping the
engine.
Stopping the hybrid system (hybrid vehicle)
Shift the shift lever to P and press the “POWER” switch as you normally do
when stopping the hybrid system.
