and block the wheel diagonally opposite the wheel being changed with the fold­

ing the Automatic Transmiss ion in "P"

not prevent the vehicle from
moving.
- Before yo u change a wheel, be su re the

Changing a wheel
When you change a wheel, follow these­
quence described below step-by-step and in
exactly tha t order .
1. Remove the decorativ e wheel c over* or
the
wheel bol t cap s* . Fo r more details see

2 . Loosen the wheel bo lts r=> page 251.
3 . Locate the proper mount ing point for the
jack and align the jack below that point

5. Remove the wheel with th e flat tire and
then i nstall the
spar e tire r=> page 253 .
6. Tighten all wheel bo lts light ly .

A wheel change is not complete without the

cle tool kit over the whee l bolt cap until it
engages.
• Pull on the
plastic clip to remove the cap

The wheel bolts must be loosened before rais­

Loosening
• Insta ll the wheel bolt wrench over the
wheel bolt and push it down as far as it will
go .
• Take tight hold of the
end of the wrench
handle and turn the wheel bolts

hand le of the screwdr iver to loosen or
tighten the wheel bolts.
- If a wheel bolt is very tight, you may find
it easier to loosen by carefully pushing

Do not lift the vehicle by the sill. Position
the vehicle jack only at the designated lift ­
ing points on the sill. Otherwise , your vehi­
cle will be damaged.
Taking the wheel off/installing the spare
tire
Follow these instructions step -by -step for
changing the wheel.

After you have loosened a ll wheel bolts and
ra ised the veh icle off the ground, remove and
replace the wheel as follows:

move t he wheel bolts from the rim . Care
shou ld be taken when removing the reversib le
blade .

When removin g or i nstalling the whee l,
the r im cou ld hit the brake rotor and dam­
age the rotor. Work carefully and have a
second person to help you.

- When mounting tires with unidirection al
tread de sign
make sure the tread pat­
tern is po inted the right way

-The wheel bolts shou ld be clean and easy
to turn. Check for dirt and corrosion on
the mating surfaces of both the wheel
and the hub . Remove all d irt from these
surfaces befo re remounting the whee l.
- Do not use the hexagonal socket in the
sc rewd river handle to loosen or t ighten
t he whee l bolts .

cells are screwed in firmly. If not, tighten plugs prior to connecting clamp on nega­
tive battery terminal.
- Please note that the procedure for con­
nect ing a jumper cable as described
above applies spec ifically to the case of
your vehicle be ing jump started . When

General hints
Your Audi requires special handling for tow­
ing.
T he following information is to be used by
commercial tow t ruck operators who know
how to operate their equipment safely.
- Nev er t ow your Audi , tow ing will c aus e
damage t o the engine a nd transmi ssion.
- Never wrap th e safet y chain s or winch c a­
ble s around th e brak e lin es.
- To prev en t unne cessary dam age, your Aud i
mu st be t ran spo rted with a flat bed tru ck .
- To load th e vehi cle on to the fl at bed, use
the t owing loop found in the vehicle t ool s
a nd atta ch to the front or rear anch o rage
r=:> page 262 and ¢page 262 .
A WARNING
A vehicle being towed is not safe for pas­
sengers. Never allow anyone to ride in a
vehicle being towed, for any reason.

fall from a lift if there is a change in ve­
hicle weight distribution and balance.
This might happen, for example, when
heavy components such as the engine
block or transmission are removed .
- When removing heavy components like
these, anchor vehicle to hoist or add cor­
responding weights to maintain the cen­
ter of gravity. Otherwise, the vehicle
might tilt or slip off the hoist, causing
serious personal injury.
(D Note
- Be aware of the following points before
lifting the vehicle:
-The vehicle should never be lifted or
jacked up from underneath the engine
oil pan, the transmission housing, the
front or rear axle or the body side
members. This could lead to serious
damage.
- To avoid damage to the underbody or
chassis frame, a rubber pad must be
inserted between the floor jack and
the lift points.
- Before driving over a workshop hoist,
check that the vehicle weight does not
exceed the permissible lifting capacity
of the hoist.
- Before driving over a workshop hoist,
ensure that there is sufficient clear­
ance between the hoist and low parts
of the vehicle.

pa irs can impair the operation and reliab ility
of your vehicle and even void your vehicle war­ ranty. Therefo re , proof of servici ng in accord­
ance w it h the ma intenance sched ule may be a
condition for upholding a possible warranty
claim made within the warran ty period.
Above all, operational safety can be adve rsely
affected, c reating unnecessary risks for you
and your passengers.
If in doubt about any serv icing, have it done
by your author ized Audi dealer or any other
p roperly equipped and qualified workshop .

Audi dealer the opportunity to perform all
schedu led maintenance and necessary repairs .

A WARNING

sult of improperly performed mainte­ nance, adjustments or repa irs.
- Always be extremely careful when work­
ing on the vehicle. Always follow com­
monly accepted safety pract ices and gen­
eral common sense. Never r isk personal

- The engine compar tment o f any motor
vehicle is a potentially hazardous area. Never reach into the area around or
touch the rad iator fan. It is temperature
control led and can sw itch on suddenly -
even when the engine is off and the igni­
tion key has been removed. The rad iator
fan switches on automatically when the coo lant reaches a certai n tempera ture
and will cont inue to run until the coo lant
temperature drops .
- Always remove the ign ition key befo re
a nyone gets under the veh icle.
- Always suppor t your veh icle with safety
s tands if it is necessary to work under­
neath the vehicle. The jack s upplied with
the vehicle is not adequate for this pur ­
pose and co uld co llapse causing serio us
personal injury.
- If you must work unde rneath the vehicle
with the wheels on the ground, a lways
make sure the vehicle is on leve l ground,
that the wheels are always secure ly
blocked and that the engine cannot be
started.
