There may be additional indicator lights in the
tachometer @, the speedometer @, the status
line ® and, depending on the instrument clus­
ter, above or below the central
area @.
The following pages will primarily show illustra­
tions of the multi-color analog instrument clus­
ter*. The display and/or position of the element
shown may vary in monochrome instrument clus­
ters or in the Audi virtual cockpit*.
A WARNING
Do not assume the roads are free of ice based
on the outside temperature display. Be aware
that there may be ice on roads even when the
outside temperature is around 41 °F (+S °C)
and that ice can increase the risk of accidents.
(D Tips
-Depending on vehicle equipment, the in­
strument illumination (needles and gauges)
may turn on when the lights are off and the
ignition is switched on. The illumination for
the gauges reduces automatically and even­
tually turns off as brightness outside in­
creases. This function reminds the driver to
turn the low beams on at the appropriate
time.
- You can select the units used for tempera­
ture, speed and other measurements in the
Infotainment
system ¢ page 251.
- If your vehicle is stationary or if you are driv­
ing at very low speeds, the temperature dis­
played may be slightly higher than the ac­
tual temperature outside due to the heat ra­
diating from the engine.
- At temperatures below 41 °F (+S °C), a snowflake symbol appears in front of the
temperature display

Coolant temperature indicator
The coolant temperature display @¢ page 10,
fig. 3 or¢ page 10, fig. 4 only functions when
the ignition is switched on. To prevent engine

damage, please observe the following notes
about the temperature ranges.
Cold range
If only the LEDs at the bottom of the gauge turn
on, the engine has not reached operating tem­
perature yet. Avoid high engine speeds , full ac­
celeration and heavy engine loads.
Normal range
The engine has reached its operating tempera­
ture once the LEDs up to the center of the gauge
turn on. If
the. indicator light in the instru­
ment cluster display turns on, the coolant tem­
perature is too high
¢ page 30.
(D Note
-Auxiliary headlights and other accessories in
front of the cooling-air intake impair the
cooling effect of the coolant. This increases
the risk of the engine overheating during
high outside temperatures and heavy en­
gine load .
- The front spoiler also helps to distribute
cooling air correctly while driving. If the
spoiler is damaged, the cooling effect will
be impaired and the risk of the engine over­
heating will increase. See an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Fa­ cility for assistance .
@ Tips
Diesel engines: due to the high efficiency of
these engines, the engine may not always reach operating temperature in cold outside
temperatures. This is normal and not a cause
for concern .

suitable gear (manual transm ission) or place the
selector lever in the D/S position (automat ic
transmission) to use the eng ine braking effect
and reduce the load on the brakes.

The engine is preheating if the II indicato r light
turns on when the ignition is switched o n.
I f the indicator light does not turn on or b links
while driving , there is an eng ine control malfunc ­
tion .
Immediately drive slowly to an authori zed Aud i
dealer or authorized Aud i Serv ice Facility to have
the malfunction co rrected .
o Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)
The malfunction indicato r lamp (MIL) is part of
the On -Board Diagnostic System (OBD II). The Cockpit overview
('4 ,;ymbol turns on when the
ignition is switched
on and turns off again once the engine is started
and running at a steady idle speed. This indicates
that the MIL is function ing correctly.
T he indicator light turns on if there is a malfunc­
tion in the engine electronics. See an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Fac ility to
have the malfunction corrected . For additional
information, see

er cap is not closed correctly

,m,, Diesel particulate filter
Applies to : vehicles wit h diesel eng ine a nd diesel particulate
filter
II Particulate filter : malfunction! See owner's
manual
T he diese l particulate filter requires regenera­
tion . To support the filter 's self-cleaning func­
tion:
Drive for approximately 15 minutes at a mini ­
mum of 37 mph (60 km/h) in 4th or 5th gear
(manua l transmission) or in the S selector lever
position (automatic transmission). Keep the en­
gine speed at approximately 2,000 RPM . The
temperature increase that will result from th is
can burn off the soot in the filter . The ind icator
light will turn off when the cleaning has complet­
ed successfully .
If the indicator light does not turn off, drive im­
med iate ly to an authori zed Audi dealer or author­
ized Audi Service Facility to have the malfunct ion
corrected .
A WARNING "---
Always adapt your speed to the current
weather, road and traffic conditions. You
should never disobey traffic laws in order to
follow driving recommendations .

Cockpit overview
!?i Engine speed limitation
(ill Maximum engine speed: XXXX rpm
The engine speed is automatically limited to the
speed displayed in the instrument cluster. This
protects the engine from overheating.
The engine speed limitation deactivates once the
engine is no longer in the critical temperature
range and you have released the accelerator ped­
al once.
If the engine speed limitation was activated by
an engine control malfunction, the
II indicator
light also turns on. Make sure the engine speed
does not go above the speed displayed, for exam­
ple when downshifting. Drive to an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility im­
mediately to have the malfunction corrected.
~ ;,,. Engine oil sensor
• Oil level system: malfunction! Please con­
tact Service
The sensor to check the engine oil level has
failed. Drive to an authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility immediately to have
the malfunction corrected.
• Oil level sensor: oil change necessary. Please
contact Service
Fuel has entered the engine oil as a result of fre­
quent short drives. Avoid high engine speeds, full
acceleration and heavy engine loads. Drive to an
authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service
Facility immediately to have the oil changed .
• Oil pressure sensor: malfunction! Please
contact Service
There is a malfunction in the oil pressure sensor.
Drive to an authorized Audi dealer or authorized
Audi Service Facility immediately to have the
malfunction corrected.
f Engine warm-up request

Fuel has entered the engine oil, either from low
outside temperatures or frequent short drives.

Drive until the engine is warm so that the fuel in
the engine oil will evaporate. Avoid high engine speeds, full accelerating and heavy engine loads
when doing this.

If the indicator light turns on for the first time
and the message appears, there are about 2.1
gallons (8 liters) of fuel left in the tank.

If the indicator light turns on the message ap­
pears, the fuel tank is almost empty. Refuel the
vehicle immediately.

heat, which could result in overheating or
other damage to the vehicle or other proper­
ty.

- Have your vehicle maintained properly and
in accordance with the service recommenda­
tions in your Warranty
& Maintenance book ­
let . Lack of proper maintenance as well as
improper use of the vehicle will impair the
function of the emission control system and
could lead to damage.
- Do not alter or remove any component of the Emission Control System unless ap­proved by the manufacturer .
- Do not alter or remove any device, such as
heat shields, switches, ignition wires,
valves, which are designed to protect your
vehicle's Emission Control System and other
important vehicle components.
(D Tips
The consumption estimates as published by
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY (EPA) and Transport Canada may not corre­
spond to your actual consumption on the
road, which will vary depending upon vehicle
load and speed, road and weather conditions,
trip length, etc.
Steering
Adjusting the steering wheel position
The steering wheel position is adjustable up and
down and forward and back.

.,. Push the lever against the steering column un­
til it is secure .
_&. WARNING
Incorrect use of the steering wheel adjust­
ment and an incorrect seating position can
cause serious injuries.
- Only adjust the steering column when the
vehicle is stationary so that you do not lose
control of the vehicle.
-
-Adjust the driver's seat or steering wheel so
that there is at least a 10 in (2S cm) dis­
tance between your chest and the steering
wheel. If you do not maintain this distance,
the airbag system will not be able to provide
its full protection.
-If your physical characteristics prevent you
from sitting at least 10 in (2S cm) or more
away from the steering
wheel, see if an au­
thorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility can provide adapters that
will help .
- If your face is level with the steering wheel,
the airbag does not provide as much protec­
tion during a collision . Always make sure
that the steering wheel is level with your
chest.
- Always hold the steering wheel with your
hands in the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock posi­
tions to reduce the risk of injury if the airbag
deploys.
- Never hold the steering wheel in the 12
o'clock position or with both hands on the
rim or the center of the steering wheel.
Holding the steering wheel incorrectly sig­
nificantly increases the risk of injury to the
hands, arms and head if the driver airbag
deploys .

.. Place a cloth over the coolant expansion tank
cap .
.. Push the release button ¢ fig. 2 78 and careful­
ly unscrew the cap to the left until you feel re­
sistance¢ &_ .
.. Push the release button again and remove the
cap completely .
.. Make sure that the fluid level remains stable .
Add more coolant if necessary .
.,. Turn the cap to the right to secure it until yo u
feel resistance a second time.
Coolant loss usually indicates there is a leak . Im­
mediately drive your vehicle to an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Aud i Serv ice Facility
and have the cooling system inspected. If the
cooling system is not leaking, a loss can come
from the coolant boiling through overheating
and being pushed out of the cooling system.
A WARNING
- The cooling system is under pressure. Do
not open the coolant expansion tank cap
when the engine is hot. This increases the
risk of burns .
-The coolant additive and the coolant can be
dangerous to your health . For this reason,
keep the coolant in the original container
and away from children. There is a risk of
poisoning.
-When working in the engine compartment,
remember that the radiator fan can switch
on even if the ignition is switched off, which
increases the risk of injury.
CD Note
Do not add coolant if the expansion tank is
empty. There may be air i n the cooling sys­
tem, which increases the risk of engine dam­
age . If this is the case, do not continue driv­
ing . See an authorized Audi dea ler or author­
ized Aud i Service Facility for assistance.
Checking and Filling
Brake fluid

Checking the brake fluid level

reservoir¢ page 332, fig . 276 . The brake fluid
level must be between the MIN and MAX mark­
ings¢_.&. .
The brake fluid level is monitored automatically.
Changing the brake fluid
Have the brake fluid changed regularly by an au­
thorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility.
A WARNING
- If the brake flu id level is below the MIN
marking, it can impair the brak ing effect
and driving safety, wh ich increase the risk of
an accident. Do not continue dr iving . See an
authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Serv ice Facility for assistance.
-If the brake fluid is old, bubbles may form
in the brake system dur ing heavy braking.
This would impair braking performance and
driving safety, which increases the risk of an
accident.
-To ensure the brake system functions cor­
rectly, only use brake fluids that comp ly
with VW standard 501 14 or FMVSS-116 DOT 4.
