Operation
Applies to vehicles: with four -zone automatic climate control
We recommend pressing the IAUTO I button and setting the temperature to 72 °F (22 °C).

Press the buttons to turn the functions on or
off. Use the dials to adjust the temperature,
the blower speed and the air distribution. The
LED in a button will light up when the func­
tion is switched on. The settings are shown in
the climate control display and are also shown in the MMI display for a few seconds . The driv­
er and front passenger sett ings can be adjust­
ing separately.

IOFF j Switching the climate control
system on/off
The I O FFI button switches the climate control
system on or off .
It also switches on when you
turn the dia l or press any button . Airflow from outside is blocked when the
climate control
system is switched off .
You can activate the residual heat f unction
whe n the ignition is off by pressing and hold­
ing the ~ button. The residua l heat from the
coolant is used to heat the vehicle interior .
The residual heat function switches off auto­
matically after about 30 minutes.
!ACI Switching cooling mode on/off
The air is not cooled and humidity is not re­
moved when cooling mode is switched off.
This can cause fog on the windows. Cooling
mode switches off automatically when the
outside temperature is below zero .
1-1 Switching recirculation mode on/off
In recirculation mode, the air inside the vehi ­
cle is circ ulated and filtered. This prevents the
unfiltered air outside the vehicle from enter­
ing the vehicle interior . We recommend
switching recirculation mode on when driving
through a tunnel or when sitting in traffic ¢ .&, .

IAUTO I Switching automatic mode on
Automatic mode mainta ins a constant tem­
perature inside the vehicle . Air temperature,
airflow and air distribution are controlled au­
tomatically.
Adjusting the temperature
Temperatu res between 60 °F (+16 °C) and
84 °F ( +28 °C) can be set. O uts ide of this
range,
lo or hi wi ll appear in the climate con ­
trol system disp lay. At both of these settings,
the climate control system runs continuously
at maximum cooling or heating power. There
is no temperature regulation.
~ Adjusting the airflow
You can adjust the airf low manually to suit
your needs . To have the airf low regulated au­
tomatically, press the
I AU TOj button.
li!J Adjusting the air distribution
You can manually se lect the vents where the
air will flow. To have the air distribution regu­
lated automatically, press the
IAUTOI button .
~I~ * Adjusting seat heating/
ventilation*
Pressing the button switches the seat heat­
ing/ventilation on at the highest setting ( level
3). The LEDs indicate the heating/ventilation
level. To reduce the heating/venti lation, press
the button again. To switch the seat heating/
ventilation off, press the button repeatedly
until the LED turns off.
After 10 minutes, the seat heating automati­
cally switches from level 3 to level 2.
I@ FRONT I Switch the defroster on/off
The windshield and side windows are defrost­
ed or cleared of condensation as quickly as
possible. The maximum amount of air flows
mainly from the vents below the windshield.
Recircula tion mode switches off.
The
IAU TOI button switches the defroster off.

liiii REAR! Switching rear window heater
on/off
The rear window heater only operates when
the engine is running. It switches off auto­ matically after 10 to 20 minutes, depending
on the outside temperature.
To prevent the rear window heater from
switching off automatically, press and ho ld
the~ button for more than 2 seconds. This
remains stored until the ignition is switched
off .
I SYNC I Synchronization*
When synchronization is switched on, the
same settings are applied to both the driver
and front passenger, except for the seat heat­
ing/ventilation*. The rear zone is also
synchronized. Synchronization switches off
when the settings for the front passenger s ide
o r r ear are adjusted.
You can also switch synchronization on by pressing and holding a dial. For example, if
you press and hold the dial on the front pas­
senger side, the settings for that side are
transferred to the driver side. The same ap­
plies to the rear.
Air vents
You can open or close the center and outer
vents in the cockpit and the vents in the rear
cente r console and door pillars using the
ridged thumbwheels. The levers adjust the di­
rection of the airflow from the vents.
&_ WARNING
-=
-Do not use this setting for extended peri-
ods of time . The windows could fog up
since no fresh air can enter the vehicle. If
the windows fog up, press the air recircu­
lation button again immediately to
sw itch off the air recircu lation function
or select defrost.
- Individuals w ith reduced sensitivity to
pa in or temperature cou ld deve lop burns
when using the seat heating function . To
red uce the risk of injur y, these individu-
als should not use seat heating . ..,.

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

pedal and press the switch

Your vehicle is equipped with an electrome ­
chan ical park ing brake . The parking brake is
designed to prevent the vehicle from rolling
un intent ionally and rep laces the hand brake.
In addition to the normal functions of a tradi ­
tional hand brake, the electromechan ical
parking brake provides var ious convenience
and safety functions.
When starting from rest
-The integral starting assist helps you when
driving by automat ically releasing the park­
ing brake ¢
page 74, Starting from rest.
-When starting on inclines, the starting as ­
sist prevents the vehicle from unintentional­
ly rolling back . The braking force of the
parking brake is not released until suff icient
driv ing force has been built up at the
wheels.

A WARNING
Do not press the accelerator pedal inadver­
tently if the veh icle is stationary but the
engine is running and a gear is selected .
Otherwise the vehicle w ill start to move
immediately and could result in a crash.

(0 Tips
-Yo u can apply the parking brake at any
time -even with the ignition switched
off. The ignition must be on in order to
release the parking brake.
- Occasional noises when the parking
brake is applied and released are normal
and are not a cause for concern .
- When the vehicle is parked, the parking
brake goes through a self-test cycle at
regu lar intervals. Any associated noises
are normal.

Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake sys­tem fails or locks .
11-In an emergency, pull the switch(®) and
conti nue to pull it to slow your vehicle down
with the parking brake .
11-As soon as you release the sw itch (®) or ac-
celerate, the braki ng p rocess stops.
If you pull the sw itch
(®) and hold it above a
speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergen­
cy braking function is in itiated. The vehicle is
b ra ked at a ll four wheels by activating the hy­
d raul ic br ake system. The b ra ke performance
i s sim ilar to making an emergency stop~.&. .
I n o rder not to activate the emergency brak­
i ng by m ista ke, an audible warning tone (bu z­
z er) sounds when the switch<®> is p ulled. As
soon as the switch(®) is released, or the accel ­
erator pedal is dep ressed, emergency braking
stops .
.&_ WARNING
Emergency braking shou ld only be used in
an eme rgency, when the normal foot brake
has failed or the brake pedal is obstructed.
Using t he parking brake to perform emer­
gency braking will slow you r vehicle down
as if you had made a fu ll brake applicat ion.
The laws of phy sic s ca nnot be s uspended
eve n w ith ESP and its associated compo­
nents (ABS, ASR, ED L) . In co rners and
when road or weather conditions are bad,
a full brake application can cause the vehi­
cle to skid or the rear end to b reak away -
r isking an accident.
Speed warning system
Introduction
The speed warning system helps you to stay
under a specified maximum speed.
The speed warning system warns you if you
are exceed ing the max imum speed that you
h ave set . You will hea r a warn ing tone when
your speed exceeds the stored va lue by ap-

proximately 3 mph ( 3 km/h) . An indicator

turns off when the speed decreases be low the
stored maximum speed .
Setting a t hreshold is recommended if you
would like to be rem inded w hen you reach a
certain maxim um speed . S ituations where you
may wa nt to do so include driv ing in a country
with a general speed limit o r if the re is a
specified maximum speed for w inte r tires .
(D Tips
Even though your vehicle is eq uipped w ith
a speed warn ing system, you sho uld still
watch the speedometer to ma ke sure you
a re not dr iv ing faster t han the speed limi t.
Setting the threshold
You can set, change and delete the threshold
in the MMI.
11-Select: I CAR! function button > Car systems
control butto n > Driver assist > Speed warn­
ing .
You can set any threshold between 20 mph
(30 km/h) and 150 mph (240 km/h). Sett ings
can eac h be ad justed in increments of 5 mph
(10 km/h).

Switching adaptive cruise control off
~ Push the lever away from you into position

ACC off appears.
Indicator lamps and messages in the instru­
ment cluster display inform you about the cur ­
rent system status and settings.
@ Indicator lights
Pl -adaptive cruise control is switched on. No
vehicles are detected up ahead . The stored
speed is ma intained.
I -A moving vehicle is detected up ahead.
The adaptive cruise control system regulates
the speed and distance to the moving vehicle
ahead and acce lerates/brakes automatica lly.
Mi -adaptive cruise control is swit ched on. A
moving vehicle up ahead was detected . Your
vehicle remains stopped and will not start
driving automatically.
I -When automat ic brakin g is not able to
keep enough distance to a previously detected
moving vehicle up ahead, you must take con ­
trol and brake¢

Both arrows on the scale© indicate the dis­
tance to the vehicle ahead. No arrow appears
when the vehicle is on an open road and there
is no object ahead. If an object is detected
ahead, the arrow moves on the scale.

selected is too close or may soon become too
close, the arrows move into the red zone on

A WARNING
Improper use of the adaptive cruise con­
trol can cause collisions, other accidents
and serious personal injur ies.
- Pressing the
! SET ! button when driv ing at
speeds below
20 mph (30 km/h), will au­
tomatically accelerate the vehicle to
20
mph (30 km/h), which is the minimum
speed that can be set.
(D Tips
-If you switch the ignit ion or the adaptive
cruise control off, the set speed is erased
from the system memory.
- You cannot switch the Electronic Stabili­
zation Program (ESP) to the SPORT mode
w hen adaptive cruise control is switched
on.
Driving in stop-and-go traffic
Applies to veh icles: w ith adaptive c ruise control
The adaptive cruise contro l system also as­
sists you in stop-and-go traffic. If a previous
detected vehicle ahead stops, your veh icle will
brake to a stop, within the limits of the sys­
tem .

Automatic Transmission
multitronic ®
Introduction
Appl ies to vehicles: with multitr oni c
Your veh icle is equipped with an electronically
controlled,
continuously variable transmis­
sion
(multitronic ®). In contrast to convention ­
al automatic transmi ssions using shifting op­
erations, the transmission ratio in the contin­
uously variab le transmission is changed con ­
tinuously. This optimizes the comfort level
and conserves fuel.
The gear ratio in the transmission is selected
(upshift and downshift) completely automati­
cally as a function of the defined driving pro­
grams.
If desired, the driver can also select the gears
manually (tiptronic mode).
Instead of the torque converter in convention­
al automatic transmissions, your multitronic ®
transmission uses a multidisk clutch for pow­
er transmission . Therefore, the "creep behav­
ior" of the veh icle dur ing idling when tempo­
rarily stopped in selecto r lever pos it ion 0/S or
R is less pronounced.

Starting the engine

I n the D /S position, the transmission can be
operated e ither in the normal D mode or in
the S sport mode. To select the 5 sport mode,
pu ll the se lector lever back briefly . Pulling the
l ever back again will select the normal D
mode. The instrument cluster display shows
the selected driving mode.
In the
no rmal mode D , the transmission auto ­
matica lly selects the best gear ratio. It de­
pends on engine load, veh icle speed and the
dynamic control program (DRP).
Select the
s port mode S for sporty driving .
The vehicle makes full use of the engine's
power. S hifting is more noticeable when accel­
erating.
When the veh icle is stationary or at speeds
be low 3 mph (5 km/h), you must always apply
the foot brake before and while moving the lever to
D /S out of N .
In certain circumstances it may be advanta­
geous to temporarily switch to the manual
shift program to manually select gear ratios
to match specif ic driving conditions

the reverse gear and causing the vehicle to
move unintentionally.

The selector lever lock is re leased as follows:

Automatic selector leve r lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N po­
s itions when the ig nition is tu rned on. To
move t he lever from these positions the driver
must depress the brake peda l. As a reminder
to the driver, the following warning appears in
the instrument cluster display when the selec­
tor is in
P and N :
When stationar y apply footbrake while se­
lecting gear
A time delay element p reven ts the selector
lever from locking when it is moved through
the
N position (going from R to 0 /5 ). The
locking element wi ll lock the se lector lever if
the lever is left in N (Neutral) for more than approximately 1 second, w ithout the brake
pedal being pressed .

Depending on your vehicle's equipment, vari­
ous parking aids will help you when parking
and maneuvering.

Appl ies to vehicles: with parking system plus
Audi parking system plus provides audio and
visual signals when parking .
Sensors are located in the front and rear
bumpers . If these detect an obstacle, audible
and v isual signals warn you. The range at
which the sensors begin to measure is approx ­
imately:
front

The closer you get to the obstacle, the shorter the interval between the audible signa ls. A
continuous tone sounds when the obstacle is

gradually drops after about four seconds (this

If the capacitive passenger detection sys ­
tem determines that the front passenger
seat is empty, the frontal airbag on the
passenger side will be turned off, and the
PA SSEN GER AIR B AG OFF light will stay
on .
Repair, care and disposal of the airbags
Parts of the a irbag system are installed at
many different places on your Audi. Installing,
removing, servicing or repairing a part in an
a rea of the vehicle can damage a part of an
airbag system and prevent that system from
working properly in a co llision.
There are some important things you have to know to make sure that the effect iveness of
the system will not be impaired and that dis­
carded components do not cause injury or po l­
lute the environment.
A WARNING
Improper care, servicing and repair proce­
dures can increase the risk of personal in­
jury and death by preventing an airbag from deploy ing when needed or deploying
an airbag unexpectedly:
- Never cover, obstruct, or change the steering wheel ho rn pad or airbag cover
or the instrument pane l or modify them
in any way .
- Never attach any objects such as cup
holders or telephone mountings to the
surfaces covering the airbag units.
- For cleaning the horn pad or instrument
pane l, use only a soft, dry cloth or one
moistened w ith plain water. Solvents or
cleaners cou ld damage the airbag cover
or change the stiffness or strength of the material so that the airbag cannot de­
ploy and protect properly.
- Never repair, adjust, or change any parts
of the airbag system.
- All work on the steering wheel, instru­
ment panel, front seats or electr ica l sys­
tem (including the installation of audio
equ ipment, cellu lar telephones and CB
radios, etc .) must be performed by a
qualified technic ian who has the training
and specia l equipment necessary.
- For any work on the airbag system, we strongly recommend that yo u see your
author ized Audi dealer or qualif ied work­
shop.
- Never modify the front b umper or parts
of the vehicle body.
- Always make sure that the s ide airbag
can inflate without inte rfe rence:
- Never install seat covers or rep lace­
ment upholstery over the front seat­
backs that have not been specifically
approved by Audi.
- Never use additional seat c ushions that
cover the areas where the side airbags
inflate.
- Damage to the orig inal seat covers or
to the seam in the area of the side a ir­
bag module must a lways be repaired
immediately by an author ized Audi
dealer .
- The airbag system can deploy on ly once.
After an a irbag has been deployed, it
must be replaced w ith new replacement
pa rts des igned and app roved especially
for your Aud i model version. Replace­
men t of comple te airbag systems or air­
bag components must be performed by
qua lified wor kshops only . Make sure that
any airbag service action is entered in
your Aud i Warranty
& Maintenance book­
let under
AIRBAG REPLACEMENT RE­
CORD.
- For safety reasons in severe accidents,
the alternator and starter a re separated
from the veh icle battery with a pyrotech-
