Introduction

The adaptive cruise control system assists the
driver by regu lating vehi cle speed and helping to
maintain a set distance to the vehicle ahead,
within the limits of the system.
If the system de­
tects a moving vehicle up ahead, adaptive cruise
control can brake and then accelerate your vehi­
cle. This helps to make driving more comfortable
both on long highway stretches and in stop-and­
go traffic.
The braking guard system can warn you about an impending collision and initiate braking maneu­
vers¢
page 91.
Adaptive cruise control and braking guard have
technica l limitations that you m ust know, so
p lease read this section carefu lly, understand
how the system works and use them properly at
all times.

interfere with the adaptive cruise contro l system

T he function of the adaptive cru ise contro l sys­
tem and braking guard is limited unde r some
conditions:
- Objects can only be de tected when they are
w ith in sensor range
¢page 87, fig. 92.
- The system has a limited ability to detect ob­
jec ts that are a shor t distance ahead, off to the
side of yo ur vehicle or mov ing into your lane .
- Some kinds of veh icles are hard to detect; for
examp le motorcycles, vehicles with high
ground clear ance or overhanging loads may be
detected when it is too late o r they may not be
detected at all.

Always pay a ttent ion to traffic when adap tive
cr uise control is switched on and braking
guard is active. As the driver, you are sti ll re­
sponsib le for starting and for maintaining
speed and distance to other objects. Braking
guard is used to assist you. The driver must
a lways take action to avo id a col lision . The
d river is always responsible for brak ing at the
correct t ime.
- Improper use of adaptive cruise control can cause collisions, other accidents and serious
pe rsonal inj ury.
- Never let the comfort and conve nience that
adapt ive cr uise control and b rak ing guard
offer distrac t you from the need to be alert
to traffic condit io ns and the need to remain
in full control of your veh icle at all times,
- Always remember tha t the adaptive cruise
con trol and bra king guard have limits -they
will no t slow the vehicle down or maintain
the set distance when you dr ive towards an
obstacle or something on or near the road
that is not moving, s uch as vehicles stopped
in a traffic jam, a stalled or disabled vehicle.
If registered by the radar sensors, vehicles
or obstacles that a re not moving can trigger
a collision wa rning and if confirmed by the
video came ra, an acute collision warning.

What can adaptive cruise control do?
The adaptive cruise control system uses video, ra­
dar and ultrasound. Moving vehicles ahead can be
r ecogni zed up to about 650 feet (200 m) away.
On open roads with no traffic, adaptive cruise
control works like a regular cruise control system.
The stored speed is mainta ined . When approach­
ing a moving vehicle detected up ahead, the
adaptive cruise control system automatically
slows down to match that vehicle's speed and
then maintains the distance that the dr iver prev i­
ously stored. As soon as the system does not de­
tect a vehicle up ahead, adaptive cruise contro l
accelerates back up to the stored speed.
In stop-and-go traffic, adapt ive cruise control can
brake until the vehicle stops and accelerate again
under certain conditions and if this is possible
within the system's limits and capabil ities
c::> page 89. Adaptive cruise control w ill not
make an emergency stop .
Which functions can be controlled?
When you switch adaptive cruise contro l on, you
can set the current speed as the "control speed"
c::> page 87 , Switching on and off.
When driving , you can stop cruise control

any time. You can also set the distance to the object ahead

the mirror turns on, but is dim.
Aud i side assist
The display remains d im in the information stage
so that your view toward the front is not d istur­
bed.
Warning stage
If the display in a m irror blinks bright ly when you
act ivate a tu rn s ignal, s ide ass ist is
warning you
about detected vehicles that it has classified as
critica l. If this happens, check traffic by glancing
in the rearview mirror and over your shoulder
c> .&. in General informa tion on page 98.
Applies to vehicles w ith active lane assist* : The
display in the mirror can also blink if you have not
activated a turn signal : If you are app roaching a
detected lane marker line and it appears you will
be leaving the lane, side assist w ill warn you
about detected vehicles that it has class ified as
critical.

(D Vehicles that are approaching
In certain cases, a vehicle will be classified as
critical for a lane change even if it is still some­
what far away . The faste r a vehicle approaches,
the sooner t he d isplay in the exter io r mirro r will
turn on.
@Vehicles traveling with you
Vehicles traveling w ith you are indicated in the
exterior mirror if they are classified as critical for
a lane change. All vehicles detected by side assist

are indicated by the time they enter your "blind
spot", at the latest.
@ Vehicles left behind
If you slowly pass a veh icle that side assist has
detected (the difference in speed between the ve­
hicle and your vehicle is less than 9 mph or 1S
km/h), the display in the exterior mirror turns on
as soon as the vehicle enters your blind spot.
T he display will not turn on if you quickly pass a
vehicle that side ass ist has detected (the differ­
ence in speed between the vehicle and your vehi­
cle is greater than 9 mph or 15 km/h).
Functional limitations
The radar sensors are designed to detect the left
and right adjacent lanes when the road lanes are
the normal width. In certain s ituations, the dis­
play in the exterior mirror may turn on even
though there is no vehicle located in the area that
i s cr itical for a lane change. For example:
- if the lanes are narrow or if your are dr iving on
the edge of your lane. If this is the case, the
system may have detected the vehicle in anoth­
er lane that is
not adjacent to your current lane.
- if yo u are driving through a c urve . Side assist
may react to a vehicle that is one lane over from
the adjacent lane.
- if side assist reacts to other objects (such as
high or displaced guard rails).
- In poor weather conditions . The side assist
functions are limited.
Do not cover the radar sensors
q fig. 107 with
stickers, deposits, bicycle wheels or other ob­
jects, because this will affect the function . Do not
use side assist when towing a trailer . For infor ­
mation on cleaning, refer to
q page 205 .
A WARNING
-Always pay attention to traffic and to the
area around your veh icle. S ide ass ist cannot
replace a dr iver's attention . The driver alone
is always responsible for lane changes and
sim ila r driv ing maneuvers.

The sound of the engine is adapted to the select­
ed mode and ranges from subtle to sporty.
(D Note
-Make sure there is enough clearance above
and below the veh icle when parking. The
height of the vehicle can change once it is
parked due to temperature fluctuations,
changes to the load conditions and changes
to the driving modes, which can affect clear­
ance.
- When transporting the vehicle on a car car­
rier, train, ship or by other means, only tie
the vehicle down at the running surface of
the tires, which is the outer c ircumference .
Securing the vehicle at the axle compo­
nents, suspension struts or towing eyes is
not permitted because the pressure in the
a ir s uspension struts can change dur ing
transport. The vehicle may not be secured
sufficient ly if this happens .
- If yo u are goi ng to tow a t railer, yo u m ust
activate the trai ler operation mode

You can choose between comfort, auto, dynamic

Auto -provides an overall comfortable ye t dy­

Selector lever emergency release
If the vehicle's power supply fails, the selector lever can be released in an emergency.

• To reach the emergency release mechanism, re­
move the ashtray insert*.
• Loosen and remove the small cap in the ashtray
mount ¢ffg.120.
• You now have access to a pin. Using a screwdriv­
er or similar object, press the pin down and
hold it in that position.
• Press the release button in the selector lever
and move it into the N position.
Only move the selector lever out of the P position
when the ignition is switched on. If the vehicle
must be pushed or towed due to a power failure
(for example, the battery is dead), the selector
lever must first be moved to the N position using
the emergency release mechanism .

A WARNING

- Please note that some surfaces, such as
clothing, are not detected by the system.
- Sensors and cameras have blind spots in
wh ich peop le and objects cannot be detect­
ed . Be especia lly caut ious of ch ild ren and
animals.
- T he sensors can be displaced by impacts or
damage to the radia tor grille, bumper ,
wheel housing and the underbody . The park­
ing systems may become impai red as a re ­
s u lt . Have yo ur autho rized Audi dealer or
qualified workshop check their function .
- Make sure the sensors are not covered by
stickers, deposits or any other obstructions

- Some ob jects are not detec ted by the sys­
tem under certain circumstances :
- Objects such as barrier chains, trailer draw
bars, vertical poles or fences
- Objects above the sensors such as wall ex­
tensions
- Objects w ith specific surfaces or struc­
tures such as chain link fences or powder
snow .
- If you continue driving closer to a low-lying
object, it may disappear from the sensor
range . Note that you w ill no longe r be
wa rned about th is obstacle.
(D Tips
- The system may provide a warning even
tho ugh there are no obstacles in the cover­
age area in some situat ions, such as :
- certain road surfaces or for long grass.
- externa l ultrason ic sources e.g. from
cleaning vehicles.
- h eavy ra in, snow or thick vehicle exhaus t.
- We recommend that you practi ce parking in
a traff ic-free location or par king lo t to be­
come fam iliar with the sys tem. When doing
this, there should be good light and weather conditions.
